Facebook on Thursday in Menlo Park, California, unveiled a software suite which stakes out a “home” on Android smartphones as it steps up its challenge to Apple and Google in the booming mobile market.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said the new software weaves the social network into the home screen of HTC and Samsung phones powered by the latest versions of Android to focus experiences on “people and not apps.”
“We’re not building a phone and we’re not building an operating system, but we are building something that’s a lot deeper than an app,” Zuckerberg told a gathering at the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley.

Facebook called the new software “a new way to turn your Android phone into a great, living, social phone.”

“Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps,” Facebook said.

The software, which allows users to see Facebook first when they turn on their phones, will be available for download from Google’s online Play shop in the United States starting April 12, Zuckerberg said.

A version should be available in Europe in coming months, according to Facebook, which said it is in the process of tailoring “Home” for tablet computers.

Home will be available through Taiwan-based electronics firm HTC, which will launch its Facebook home-screen smartphone called HTC First, to be available through US carrier AT&T.
“It is the only phone that has Facebook Home pre-loaded and optimized,” HTC chief Peter Chou said while joining Zuckerberg at the event.

“Mobile is fundamentally social; it is all about connecting with other people,” Chou continued. “This is a great opportunity to bring mobile and social together even closer.”

Zuckerberg demonstrated how a user would start with Facebook on the home screen and be able to navigate and switch back and forth between apps, and simultaneously send and receive messages through “chat heads” which are overlaid on the screen.

“I think this is a really big deal for Facebook,” said Peter Corbett of the research firm iStrategyLabs.

“We’ve actually seen Facebook call themselves a mobile company recently and if you look at their analytics, more than half of their users are accessing Facebook through mobile. Now that they have what will essentially be a native branch of the Android operating system that they control and build upon, this is the future of Facebook.”

Corbett added that “Apple should be worried to a certain extent” because Facebook will “put this in front of millions and millions of the world’s youth who may decide ‘I want a Facebook phone instead of an iPhone.’”

Analyst Trip Chowdhry said the new software is a potentially “groundbreaking experience” which could help Facebook compete with Google in the market for mobile advertising.
“Since Facebook is not imitating, they will carve a leadership position,” he said, adding that “Google missed a huge opportunity in social mobile phones.”

The announcement comes with Facebook trying to connect more with mobile users, and — importantly — deliver more ads in the fast-growing segment.

The research firm eMarketer said US mobile advertising spending grew 178 percent last year to $4.11 billion, a market that nearly tripled last year.

Google took more than half of those revenues, but Facebook’s share in growing: eMarketer said the social network accounted for 9.5 percent of mobile ad revenues in 2012 and is expected to take 13.2 percent this year.

But despite the eclectic characters that make up the bustling capital, this is a sight that will shock even the most hardened citizen.

A naked man was seen dashing through the city carrying a life-sized inflatable doll - hotly pursued by a nude woman.
Some have suggested it's a romantic game gone terribly wrong, while others mused that it was an art project.

But either way, both participants were clearly prepared to bare all as they ran across roads in front of taxis.

On Shanghaiist, a confused citizen wrote that the pictures are sweeping across Chinese social media, and people are trying to piece together what happened and the identity of the daring duo.

They wrote: 'Is it an art project? A sex game gone wrong? A woman jilted by a silicone mistress?'

The naked dash happened at around 3am in the Wangjing neighbourhood in Beijing.
The South China Morning Post said that speculation was rife about whether it was a publicity stunt.

'Is this a real-life Temple Run?' wrote a blogger, referring to the game where players become an explorer who steals an idol from a temple and flees from monsters chasing it.

The people of Beijing are no stranger to the odd nude streak.
In February people took part in the Naked Running competition at Olympic Forest Park.

Around 300 participants took part in the annual 3.5 km Undie Run, which promoted environmentally-friendly lifestyles.

The 69-year-old travel agency tycoon splashed out £15,000 on a full-page advertisement in The Times of India’s matrimonial section in search of a younger bride.

Under the headline ‘He is a Great Guy – Wish to Marry Him?’ the bizarre feature spells out exactly what the Mumbai-born businessman is looking for in a wife.

His demands include a woman who is slim, under 40, childless and a meat eater.

Despite owning his own private plane, a sprawling mansion in Mexico and a fleet of cars and motorcycles, Mr Vimadalal has struggled to find love since his wife died in a car crash three years ago.

‘You should be no older than 40 and slim. And please don't be a vegetarian. If you are divorced it doesn't matter, but definitely no children.

'I am much older than 40 but am very young at heart, very young physically, very active and any girl older than 40 would have a tough time keeping up with my active lifestyle,’ he added.

Mr Vimadalal returned to his native Mumbai in search of love after trawling Mexico, the U.S. and online and finding 'only idiots'.

He first moved from India to Canada to work for an airline company in 1967 before later moving to Los Angeles because Vancouver was 'too cold'.

It was there he met his first wife Firoza and the two started up a travel company called Magnum together.

But he closed it down in 1994 after he 'had become super rich and didn’t need to work anymore', according to the Mumbai Mirror.

He later spent five years building the house in Mexico which he named Palacio de Noelle after his sister.

Since his ad was published on Sunday, Mr Vimadalal has 'interviewed' 20 potential brides, but 'there have been no serious possibilities.'

'Two or three were very sweet, nice people, but I place a lot of emphasis on the figure,' he told the Daily Telegraph. 'I don't mind if the face is not pretty but I like a slim figure and the girls who have been very nice had big fat bottoms. I don't like that.'

But as his advert suggests, he is full of self-belief and says he is determined to find that special someone.

'I won’t leave, till I find a bride. I genuinely miss having a life partner,' he told a reporter from the Mumbai Mirror.

A ghoulish student stunned her family and friends by staging her own funeral – so she could ENJOY the occasion.
Zeng Jia, 22, wanted to experience her own burial service while she was still alive.

So she spent a fortune on a full-blown ceremony with mourners, flowers and photographers.
To make her body look more convincingly dead she hired a team of make-up artists who specialise in making dead people look more lifelike.

Zeng, from Wuhan, Hubei province, China, said: “It struck me that people spend all that time and effort on someone when they are gone and they cannot appreciate it.
“I wanted to see what people would think of me so I decided to hold my funeral while I could enjoy it.”

After lying in state for an hour — complete with a Hello Kitty doll on her chest and origami doves hanging above her coffin — Zeng got up to join her own wake.
She added: “Experiencing death has made me appreciate life more keenly.”

A man dressed as a woman was arrested at an airport in southern Brazil last week for allegedly trying to smuggle cocaine in a fake butt, Worldcrunch reports, translating local media coverage.

According to a HuffPost translation of Globo, the man was attempting to fly from Campinas, Brazil to Lisbon, Portugal, and then on to Brussels. Once he landed in Belgium, he was to receive the equivalent of about $5,000 for delivery.

But while he was waiting for his flight to Europe, authorities approached him and found two bags of cocaine hidden in his underwear, forming a prosthetic derrière, Folha de S.Paulo reports.

“They gave him a mobile phone so he could contact the person who would receive the narcotics once he got to his destination,” officer Gilberto Salles Souza Junior told Globo, according to a HuffPost translation.

Smuggling operations similar to this have backfired in the past. In December 2011, a model, who had just arrived in Rome from Brazil, was arrested after authorities found 5.5 pounds of cocaine hidden in fake breast and buttock implants, The Daily Mail reported at the time.

About a year later, a 20-year-old woman was taken to a hospital after she told authorities at a Barcelona airport that her chest was bleeding because she’d recently undergone plastic surgery and the wounds hadn’t healed, according to the BBC. Several bags of cocaine — valued at about $78,000 — were removed from the woman.

This comes as a sudden shock to everyone including some staff and executives at Chocolate City but those in the know will tell you this was long expected.

Close sources to Jesse Jagz and Chocolate City tell us there had been an ungoing war between the ‘Wetin dey’ singer and the popular label.

Jagz, one source told NET, ‘was fed up with the way the label was handling his career and decided to frustrate them in return.’

Jagz last release was his debut album in May 2010, after then he sort of went into comatose, save for his production of Ice Prince and BrymO’s albums in 2011 and 2012 and a few minor releases, we might not have noticed his presence.

‘Chocolate City have a one-year/one-artiste project run’, a staff at Chocolate City tells NET.

(2008-2009 was M.I, then ’09-’10 was Jesse, ’10-’11 was M.I again, ’11-’12 was Ice Prince, ’12-’13 was for Brymo, this year’s run ’13-’14 was meant to be for Jesse Jagz).

‘But Chocolate City signed three new acts – Pryse, Nosa and Victoria Kimani and started concentrating on the last two when they noticed Jesse had started giving them trouble’, our source adds.

‘Jesse would refuse to go to the label’s studio at Lekki Phase 1, he and the other choc boys M.I and Ice Prince had built separate studios in their Palmgroove, Lagos residence. Jesse just kept making music, a lot of music, over 100 songs’.

Then there were allegedly two strong claims the label made against ‘Jargo’; the first that he owed a lot of money.

‘Choc City said Jargo owed them money, there were several cases where he would travel to the North for a gig and wouldn’t bring back anything to the label. At times, he would claim they paid him just to appear and that didn’t hold under his contractual agreement’.

The second was his alleged substance abuse. There are very strong claims that Jesse Jagz, a truly talented rapper and producer, is addicted to Marijuana.

‘Everybody smokes ‘igbo’ but Jesse’s own was too much! He would be reeking of Igbo smell when he came up to the studio to hang out. Don’t you see his Instagram photos, don’t you read his revolutionary tweets? He thinks he’s Fela or Bob Marley for Christ’s sake!‘

Sources say Sola Oladebo, Jesse’s manager for the last three years, is tired of the whole situation.

‘Sola is tired, fed up but can’t leave him now, he has invested too much time in Jargo. At a time, there was nothing to do as Jesse career was dormant, so when Choc City fired Ice Prince’s former manager in 2012, they made Sola the interim manager’.

We are told till the night of his shocking announcement, elder brother M.I and the other Choc Boys were unaware of his self-imposed exit. M.I had just released his comeback single for his next album ‘The Chairman’ when Jesse dropped the bombshell.

‘M.I was as shocked as everyone else. He’s not happy Jesse didn’t tell him of the situation first. He has erased all thoughts of leaving Choc City now as a sign to show loyalty’, a friend to M.I says.

An insider told us over the weekend, that the last straw that broke the camel’s back was when Audu Maikori, top exec at the label summoned him via E-mail, he simply replied with two words ‘F**k You’.

Maikori could not be reached and we’re told that following Jagz’ statement, he immediately contacted all staff (including artistes) and instructed them not to speak to the press.
Attempts to reach him and other staff at the label through emails, phone calls and text messages have been unsuccessful.

Jesse’s manager could not be reached for comments as his mobile phone was switched off.
Will other acts follow suit? An insider tells us ‘Watch out for Brymo, he might also throw in the towel soon. He had issues with Vice Presido M.I in 2012, he also has grown wings, you can never tell’.
But there are the likes of M.I and Ice Prince - two prized acts at the successful label who have publicly assured fans Choc City will remain home for a long time.

Jesse Jagz, 28, signed to the label along with his elder brother Jude ‘M.I’ Abaga in 2008 after the gifted rapper became an instant success with his debut ‘Talk About It‘.

Nigerian hip hop duo Skuki real names Tumininu Laolu-Oguniyi and Atewologun Laolu-Ogunniyi (Peeshaun and Vavavoom) are preparing for the lunch of their brand of condoms, called Peeshaun condom.

In a strategic bid to enlarge their entrepreneurial horizons, the two singers are set to launch the condom, a project that UNICEF (according to investigations) is sure interested in by way of partnership.
A source close to the crooners intimated that the condom named Peeshaun is already in the pipeline, undergoing registration, and it will be made public before the close of 2013.

Stories about their foray into condom manufacturing reeled in last year with the Osun-born singers saying, “We’re going into condom production because we believe hugely in family planning. Every day we come across children in the streets hawking when they are supposed to be in school.

“This actually means that if a couple can afford only one loaf of bread which can conveniently take care of two children. If they end up having five, they would have to share one loaf between the five instead of two. Sanele admitted that since the wedding, he has begun to feel like a married man.

He said:'The day was great and it was exactly what I had imagined it would be like.

'My friends thought it was really funny that I was getting married but I do now feel like a husband.'

The Japanese have done it again! For the first time in human history,they have successfully utilized sperm cells created with stem-cell techniques to fertilize eggs and produce live, normal offspring.

They used embryonic stem cells of mice to make primordial germ cells,which are the precursors for sperm cells.
Scientists have for ages tried to create sperm by using stem cells in earlier in-vitro studies using mice and human cells, but up until now they haven’t been successful.

The breakthrough research by the Asian scientists, led by Professor
Mitinori Saitou from the Kyoto University, is published as an
abstract in the journal Cell,, entitled: “Reconstitution of the Mouse Germ Cell Specification Pathway in Culture by Pluripotent Stem Cells”.

They then transplanted them into the testicles of infertile mice,
after which the cells produced normal-looking sperm. The mature sperm cells were used to fertilize eggs and produced healthy, fertile offspring.

These findings will encourage further research into the process of how primordial germ cells develop, something that has been difficult to investigate because these cells don’t grow in vitro.

Whether future findings eventually will lead to new discoveries in human fertility remains a question. Human and mouse embryonic stem cells have different properties and any research of this kind with human stem cells will of course become an ethical issue as well.

Foremost novelist, Prof Chinua Achebe, is dead. He was 82.

PREMIUM TIMES learnt he died last night in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

A source close to the family said the professor had been ill for a while and was hospitalised in an undisclosed hospital in Boston.

The source declined to provide further details, saying the family will issue a statement on the development later today.

Contacted, spokesperson for Brown University, where Mr. Achebe worked until he took ill, Darlene Trewcrist, is yet to respond to our enquiries on the professor’s condition.

Until his death, Prof Achebe was the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and Professor of Africana Studies at Brown.

The visiting delegation from the east African country has been disappointed by the treatment it’s gotten since arriving Lagos ahead of Saturday’s World Cup qualifier, goal.com reports.

The Nigeria Football Federation abandoned the visiting Kenyan national team to its fate on Wednesday. The east Africans will play against the Super Eagles in Saturday’s 2014 World Cup qualification match in Calabar, Cross River State.

The Harambee Stars arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos via a Kenya Airways flight on Wednesday afternoon.

On arrival at the airport, there was not one high ranking member of the Nigeria Football Federation to receive the team for a game of such international magnitude.

Expecting to be ferried to Calabar straight away in order to begin preparations for the crucial game, the east Africans were told that the only flight that goes to the city had departed and that they would need to wait till Thursday.

They then requested that a plane be chartered for them but did not get any response from an NFF official named Alataka who was communicating with them via telephone. They said that his mobile was unreachable for prolonged periods.

The team was later taken to the Silver Grandeur Hotel, around Isolo, to lodge for the night.

According to the Kenyan head of delegation Hussein Terry, the hotel owned by NFF vice president Chief Mike Umeh is “a two star hotel” and it contravened the Caf/Fifa statutes that say any visiting international team must be accommodated in at least a four star hotel.

Terry also stated that as head of delegation, a separate saloon car should have been provided for him. However, the NFF did not do such and he had to share the team’s Coaster bus.

The Kenyans also complained of being left without a security official accompanying them.

The Football Kenya Federation sent a letter of protest to the NFF. In the letter made available to Goal.com, the federation’s secretary general Michael Esokwa asked the NFF to urgently address the needs of the visiting team according to agreed terms.

While not wanting to waste the opportunity of acclimatising in the humid weather, they decided to find a football field to work out. They were taken to the Ajao Estate Primary School in Oshodi.

There the team, under the watchful eyes of coach Adel Amrouche, did light jogging and stretching exercises on the dusty grounds of the primary school.

Amrouche later told Goal.com that he wasn’t fazed by the poor reception that his team had been given. “T.I.A,” he said.

“This is Africa,” he explained before walking into the team bus.

With the less than hospitable treatment that the east Africans have been given, many of the team officials are already talking about using it to turn the table against their opponents in Saturday’s encounter.

“We will spoil your party,” one official said. “That you’re the African champions makes us more motivated to defeat you.”

An accompanying journalist told Goal.com: “I love your country if this is how they treat visitors,” he said with sarcasm.

The Kenyans will hope to get space on the Arik Air flight that departs for Calabar on Thursday in order to settle down in the Canaan City ahead of their game on Saturday.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old truck driver for allegedly raping his seven year-old daughter and his one-year-old granddaughter.

The suspect, Sylvester Ehijere, allegedly disvirgined the two girls at his home located at 13 Kolawole Street, Ejigbo.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said it was the suspect’s wife that reported the matter to the Ejigbo Police Division.

Former Leader of the musical group-RnM appeared on T.B Joshua’s Emmanuel TV and apart from dishing out some shocking news about her adult life, she also talked about how things were for her as a child.

Denise Williams, former group leader of RnM (winners of the maiden edition of the Vodafone Icons) has revealed that TB Joshua has saved her from a possessed world of confusion, prostitution and drug abuse.

Denise stated that, “My mother is a drug addict and alcoholic, my father I never knew him, not because he was a dead-beat dad but because my mother was very promiscuous.”

According to her, she was abused severally and finally sent away to her real mum at the age of 12 on board a flight to Liberia during that country’s civil war.

She was disappointed upon seeing her mother whom she said, “lived with three other men in an unfinished building.”

She revealed that, her mum introduced her to prostitution and after facing harsh economic hardships, she met a man, who was seven years older than her. That man, she noted, introduced her to drugs and alcohol which become part of her life.


She admitted that she was lost until a friend took her to TB Joshua’s popular church, the Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN). According to her, many men offered to have sexual relationships with her in order to advance her dreams of having a successful music career before, during and after the various singing competitions she had participated in.

The talented singer added that when she finally won Vodafone Icons with RnM, with all the promise that came with it, her personal devils led her astray. “Something came in me and said leave them alone.

They are holding you back, why don’t you just pursue your solo career and I just left those girls and those girls have moved on, they are elevating, great things are happening to them and I start singing at another karaoke bar again.

So I am not moving forward anymore” she said. She also revealed that she attempted suicide severally with no success and admitted that it was the grace of God. “I attempted suicide more than three or four times and I wouldn’t die because every time I tried someone will come and find me and save me from it.

I’m saved, I’m healed, I’m delivered, I’m happy” she added. She indicated that she wasn’t the same Denise any more as her life had been transformed.

She assured the pastors of SCOAN that she was a baby in Christ and wanted God to direct her in her music career. Denise has been on several singing competitions including Idols West Africa and Vodafone Icons.

A 106-year-old central Ohio woman who completed all her high school classes but didn't graduate because a dispute over a book has long-last received her high school diploma.

Reba Williams was presented with her diploma at her apartment in Columbus on Wednesday in a jam-packed ceremony that was nearly 88-years overdue, the News Journal in Mansfield reports.

The 2013 graduate even got to wear a traditional white graduation cap brought by retired Mount Vernon English teacher Rita Dailey who was the one to first urge the school board to award the diploma.

Mrs Williams has said she completed high school in Mount Vernon but was denied her diploma because she refused to read a final book assigned by a teacher.
She'd read the book once and didn't want to read it again.

Vernon Superintendent Steve Short, who read over her high school records himself, was on hand to personally award the woman her diploma.

'Congratulations, Reba, you are the top of your class. You've taught us a lot,' he said.
Mrs Williams says she hopes current students realize that learning is important and that they probably shouldn't follow her example.

'If they expect to get any place in this world, they have to learn,' she told the Journal.
Mrs Williams says she was never not a fan of school or learning but on the contrary grew up wanting to read rather than run around and play games like hide-and-seek with the other kids. She said her favorite subject was math.

'I liked to learn everything,' she said. 'In high school, I took everything that I could'
Mrs Dailey says she would have handled her expected 1925 graduation differently if she were her teacher at the time.

'I would not be one to condone a student not completing an assignment, but I would offer alternatives,' she said. 'Apparently, she wasn’t offered that opportunity.'

Mrs Williams went on to work as a cook at Malabar Farm from 1943 to 1957.

Among her family present for the ceremony was her daughter, Lavata, and younger brother, Charles, who's 88-years old.

An 11-year-old Oklahoma boy and his mother have been arrested after the boy allegedly raped his 6-year-old sister and the mother failed to report the incident, according to authorities.

Police made the arrests on Friday afternoon after an Oklahoma Department of Human Services worker received a tip about the alleged assault and interviewed family members.

The 6-year-old girl told the human services worker that she was in her bedroom doing homework on Wednesday when her brother and a 7-year-old cousin asked her to pull her pants off, according to a police report obtained by MailOnline.

The girl said after her pants were off, both of the boys 'put their things in her and it hurt,' the police report states. The victim added that her mother told her not to tell anyone about the incident.

MailOnline is not naming any of the suspects or witnesses in order to protect the identity of the victim.

When the DHS worker confronted the mother, she admitted that she did not take the girl to the hospital or report the incident. The mother said she spoke to her son about the incident and he told her it was his younger cousin who assaulted her daughter.

When officers arrived at the victim's home on Friday, they interviewed the brother and placed him under arrest on a charge of rape in the first degree.

They also interviewed an older sister, who said she learned of the alleged assault on Thursday, a day after it reportedly happened.

'She stated she was was getting ready for work on [Thursday] and heard [the victim and her brother] arguing,' the police report states. When she asked them what they were fighting about, her brother claimed that their little sister was assaulted by their cousin.
He said the cousin pulled his pants down along with the girl's pants and 'touched [her] with his penis but did not penetrate.'

The brother said he got mad and told his cousin to leave, but that the cousin returned shortly. The brother also admitted to kissing his sister on the cheek and stated that his cousin has been going around school 'telling kids what we did.'

The older sister called her mom and told her what she knew. She said her mother was already aware of the incident and that she did not know why her mother didn't report it or take the girl the hospital.

The mother was arrested on a complaint of failing to report child abuse, while the 6-year-old girl was taken to hospital and placed in protective custody.

A Saudi man dubbed “the dean of centenarians” died in the Gulf Kingdom this week at the age of 154 years, nearly four years after his name was listed in Guinness as the oldest living man in the world.

Mohammed bin Zarei died of old age at a hospital in the tiny village of Sadr Ayad near the southern town of Nammas, leaving behind more than 180 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had 10 wives and had told a local TV station that he was looking for a new wife at the age of 150 after all his wives died.

“Bin Zarei died at hospital this week….he was 154 years old…the man had seen all the kings that ruled Saudi Arabia,” one paper said.
Bin Zarei hit headlines when the Saudi satellite TV news channel Alarabiya broadcast a film about him a few years ago, during which he said he was in a good health. The programme presenter, Saud Al Khalaf, called him “the dean of centenarians”.

When he was 150 years old, his name was entered in Guinness book of records as the oldest living man on earth, according to the report.

She's using a 24-karat-gold-plated wheelchair to get around.

The Daily Beast reports that Gaga's stylist contacted jewelry designer Ken Borochov of the label Mordekai, to design the leather-tufted chair that features a removable canopy.


In fact, "1.5 ounces of gold were plated onto the chair, " Borochov says. "I wanted [the wheelchair] to look like a throne.""It was a huge undertaking," Borochov says. "It was made all over the United States, my assistant had to run around everywhere."

A star Brazilian footballer broke down as he admitted that his former girlfriend was murdered, dismembered and fed to dogs.

Bruno Fernandes de Souza, 28, a goalkeeper who was tipped to play for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, is accused of having Eliza Samudio killed to avoid paying child support after she gave birth to his love child.

The former Flamengo player had previously denied any knowledge of what happened to the 25-year-old, but told a Brazilian court yesterday how his best friend Luiz Henrique Romao had paid someone to kill her.

He admitted that although he hadn't ordered his former lover to be killed, he had 'accepted' it.
The goalkeeper is accused of planning Ms Samudio's abduction and murder with eight others including his wife Dayane, another former lover, a cousin and former policeman Marcos Santos.

It has been alleged that he watched as Santos tortured her and then helped him to chop her body.

Parts of the woman's corpse are alleged to have been fed to Bruno's pet rottweillers, while the rest was buried in concrete.

At an earlier trial, Romao was found guilty of Ms Samudio's murder and jailed for 15 years. Santos will be put on trial next month.

Bruno, who before his arrest had been linked with a multi-million pound transfer to AC Milan, has always claimed Ms Samudio was alive and had left the country. Her body has never been found.
