Politics / Nigeria, The Way Forward: by jantii(m): 11:36am On May 20, 2011
I've said it repeatedly and will continue to do so,  well, until someone listens, purely because I have no urge to pursue any sort of political ambition.

Wait, who says I have to be a politician to change the thinking? We can't all sit around the same 'table of politics', "politiking", and expect things to happen now, can we?

My point? Other developing economies like ours, case in point, Colombia, yes, Colombia, have taken their economic/political destiny by the 'scruff of the neck' and with just one man directing affairs, the whole Country is starting to experience positive economic changes,  and rapidly too!

The Colombian government (in 2007) launched a Productive Transformation Programme, whose objective was to create a novel public–private partnership engaging eight industry sectors. (Remember we also started this in Naija but scuttled it with shady dealings?). Early results suggest that tighter collaboration has not only removed investment barriers but also built competitive advantages. Now, how was this achieved?

A Mckinsey Study revealed that to date, the program’s results are encouraging, although it’s too early to claim success but there is an important new working dynamic, based on a shared and clear agenda, between the public sector and the business community. As an illustration, here are summary steps taken in one sector (business-process-outsourcing).

Developing human resources: The government has set up a national registry for people with certified proficiency in the English language to make it easier for business-process-outsourcing companies to find qualified employees. The city of Bogotá, in partnership with several companies, has created a program to finance English-language education for call center employees.

Taxation and Regulation: By eliminating the value-added tax on business-process-outsourcing service exporters (in May 2010), the government gave them the same conditions that goods-exporting industries enjoy and eliminated a disincentive to the creation of offshoring services in Colombia. In the second half of 2010, Congress is expected to approve a new data protection bill, which would align Colombian law with stricter European and US data security requirements, making the country a more attractive business-process-outsourcing destination.

Industry promotion: Colombian executives in the sector have established a local chapter of the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (first in Latin America) which will help managers stay connected to their peers abroad and become up-to-date on global trends. In addition, a partnership between exporters and the government will promote foreign investment in a variety of sectors, including business process outsourcing.

Infrastructure: Local governments are developing two free-trade zones, near Bogotá and Medellín, respectively, specializing in business process outsourcing. State-of-the-art infrastructure and services will be available to companies that settle there. In addition, the government has already granted free trade–zone status to three new business-process-outsourcing facilities, in Bogotá, Manizales, and Pereira. Three others are under consideration, in Bogotá, Medellín, and Popayán.

The leaders of Colombia’s business community and public sector are committed to accelerating the pace of the country’s economic development. This goal will require not only sustained improvement in the business environment, security, and fiscal policy but also microlevel reforms to ensure that specific sectors and companies become more competitive in global markets. The Productive Transformation Program is an important element in this process. Colombia’s new government, which took office in August, has promised to continue it; in the second half of 2010, the program will be extended to the agri-business sector.

You'd be amazed to know that these reforms were spear-headed by a single and intelligent individual, who decided not to seek a 'third term' but instead handed over to another administration that has continued to pursue the same National vision,

When are we going to have a shared National vision in Nigeria? I've followed President GEJ's space on facebook, where he (or whoever) writes the column claims to be making progress on certain areas and steps taken on some others,  This for me remains a myopic way of approaching the Nigerian 'elephant',  Someone needs to take a bird's eye view and craft a VISION, with the main work being aligning the rest of us to pursue that one goal!!!

I submit my VISION of 'providing stable infrastructure at all levels within the Country in the next 10 years'!!!

Feel free to submit yours,   smiley

God bless Nigeria!!!

Romance / Re: My Girl Confessed To Me She Double Dated During Our Courtship. Shd I Forgive Her by jantii(m): 4:06pm On Sep 28, 2007
@bebe2007, u harsh o  grin grin grin grin

@evamiibee, thats a very graphic image o, bros!!! like 50 times and at the same venue? kai!!!

@ poster, there r so many considerations when this kinda issue pops up:
1. How exactly did u push her away?
2. What stage is your relationship in? engaged/married or just still nacking d shit out of each other?
3. Are u the forgiving type of guy or a hard &  angry type like evamiibee? U sound like the forgiving type sha  undecided

My advise:
1. If u can live with it and not refer to the issue for the rest of ur days, then forgive her
2. If ur the tyype that's very scornful and won't forgive, better just tell her and part ways

Goodluck!!!
