Nairaland / General / Re: Barcanista Blackmail Ii: Friends And "Friends", Patriotism And "Malooism", by jhydosky(m): 12:45pm On Feb 18, 2015
Dear Barcanista,

So Jonathan is now your Messiah!! You sincerely believe in your hearts of hearts that he is transforming Nigeria the way it should right?

I am a passive Nairalander and usually enjoy reading your threads. But this one is a huge disappointment for me.
I concede that you have the right to transfer your allegiance to wherever you deem fit and for whatever reasons... but you must realize that you are already writing your history. We all do with our actions and our choices.

You know as they say that TODAY WAS YESTERDAY'S TOMORROW....

Nigeria did not get here by happenstance but by our poor choices (the would always be justification for every choices anyway).

PDP have not helped the cause of this Nation. GEJ... I even lack appropriate words to convey my disappointment... but I know I regret voting for him the last time.
I wish you Goodluck in your new place... I hope you will still continue to put issues in their correct place without twisting facts. More importantly, I hope your switching was in harmony with your conscience.

BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T STAND FOR SOMETHING, YOU WILL FALL FOR EVERYTHING.

For me and my household... we are standing behind the General even if we standalone.

PEACE.

Dear Berem,
I am supporting GMB for this election but I am not comfy with APC shielding him from debate.

GEJ is not superior to a Buhari. Man-to-man.

He will thrash the Otuoke Ph.D holder.

APC's strength is in her team and Buhari leads this team.

Please let GMB debate this guy!!

Why can't Kerry go meet our president in Abuja or why can't Jonathan send Ebariba Samboribobo or one of the ministers to go see him in Lasgidi? Is Kerry President Obama ni or what? So when Obama comes, who go receive am? Madam Diarisgod? Many African leaders no dey respect themselves. Murtala Muhammed, please rest well. Na warrior be that. Not all these lackeys we have today.

I don't see how attacking personalities helps you and the government you support. The greatest selling point of the APC is not onlt Buhari. it is the fact that they have a solid team of people who know how to get the job done. Buhari's popularity is a political advantage.

I will vote APC for a change. With APC, the change maybe better or otherwise but with PDP; I am sure Nothing will change...and I am tired of the PDP. Is GEJ and his team the best Nigeria can offer at the top? i will llike to see a Buhari and his team take a shot too.

Ymodulus:

Thank you first for the nice question asked.

Firstly, Obasanjo introduced and liberalised the use of the GSM. Prior to this, telephone - whether land or mobile was almost exclusively for the rich.

Secondly, it was under the Obasanjo leadership that Nigeria's debt got written off in the Paris Club.

Thirdly, it was Obasanjo who bravely retired all Military men in the Nigerian Army who had tasted or held any political office.

Fourthly, it was also under his leadership that the Nigerian banking institution got brilliant reformations (although with some lapses) - This reformation stopped the total collapse of the financial institution in Nigeria during global financial melt down.

Fifthly, under OBJ Prof. Dora Akunyili of NAFDAC brought back in Nigeria the integrity of pharmaceutical drugs and fought vehemently without ethnic colouration, the barons importing fake drugs in Nigeria.

Finally, the fight against corruption under OBJ's leadership did have some bite. Whether it was used in hunting political opponents or not...it did have some bite and we are all witnesses that since the exit of Mallam Ribadu, the anti-corruption institution has virtually lost her voice and temerity.

I'm just thinking aloud, what will president Jonathan's Legacy be?

Why do I love the way you handle the question?? You are of superior intelligence clearly. Well done

Here is a food for thought for you @OP
Watch the Uncommon Trasformer Gov. Akpabio on AIT 13 Nov, 2014 revealing more project he has for Nigerians After commissioning the Akwa Ibom Stadium. This Man Is not Piping down He Is still building more world class projects while others are complaining. Enjoy the video and listen to the suprise projects from the gov. himself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTuJ0OADq9Y

No one is saying Governor Akpabio has not done well. That fact can not be contested. Akpabio has many projects to his records because there are lots to be done. He has done alot but there is still a lot more to be done!! Because the money is there does not mean we should spend it on "infrastructures" that would end up being a burden. And I dare say many stadiums in the country including the "kiosk" at surulere are such to their respective owners (the govt).

We have seen the National stadiums in Lagos and Abuja when they decay before government starts renovating them again....It would be the same with Akwa Ibom stadium..it is not self-sustaining..and the state government would have to keep paying almost forever to maintain it. It is such a beautiful stadium!!

A Nations Cup qualifier going to be played there..just like the last time we played Sudan in Abuja..(the fans came in for free to support the team..and that's the only match the N63bn Abuja stadium has hosted this year)..Even if fans pay to watch the Eagles play in Uyo..with the low income of many of the people in the state as attested to by the governor himself..how much are they going to pay to see the game?..and would that be enough to maintain the stadium for several months before it ever hosts another game?..Where is the football team in Akwa Ibom that can attract a 30,000 crowd weekly to keep the stadium busy and pay for itself?..The Eagles have been playing most of their matches in Calabar..did that earn the state enough money to at least re-grass the pitch of the stadium?..The answer is No..on the contrary the state was even paying a lot of money to host the team and the NFF..

True. Akpabio is leaving Akwa Ibom better than he met it but are all the problems solved?

Would Abuja have fared badly without the 63bn Abuja National Stadium? Would Akwa Ibom be worse off without a N39bn stadium?

Just Food for our thoughts...

Envy

Petty jealousy. This is all I see. This write up is ill conceived
No country waits until the last citizen is taken out of poverty until it embark on certain projects.
India, China, Russia, US, etc all started space programmes at a time many ( in some cases hundreds of millions ) of their citizens were ( some still are ) stricken with poverty.
Akwa Ibom deserved more of such stadiums and has gotten one kudos to Akpabio.
Stop the hate.
You will all wake up one day to discover that Akwa ibom had surpassed Lagos. ( maybe this is the problem)
When Fashola refurbished the kiosk at Surulere he was praised to high heavens. No one complained that Lagos is full of the worst slums in Africa.
I am beginning to agree that a section of this country frowns at another section out performing it. Sometimes am really short for words.
Akpabio had built more roads with bridges than you have ever seen a single government did, federal roads inclusive and is not complaining like Fashola
Schools at almost 90% completely renovated. ( u can claim ameachis own are better yet I think his is not up to 20%)

Schools to secondary level are free, waec/neco fees are paid

Children under the ages of 6 and adults above 65 get free medicare
A referral hospital probably the best purpose built is to be commissioned soon.
The Tropicana/cineplex, sheraton on course
An airport completed with Maintenance hangar, expansion on course
Ibom power plant completed built tens of kilometres of pipeline from Eket to Ikot Abasi also erected a High tension to evacuate the power from Ikot Abasi to Eket.
Over 85% electrification achieved with 100% promised by 2015
Thousands of minor inter ministerial projects most of which have been advertised in some national dailies with locations and photographs (I guess for pips like this writer) to see.

In the 21st century only e.d.i.o.t.s still think that it's the role of government to build factories or plant plantations.
Russia realised it wasn't the best, China knows it's impossible. If government have built dams please farm. Since there are good roads please be a transporter.
You can't be more Catholic than the pope. Stop despising the Akwa Ibomites. They are happy.

I read somewhere where someone demanded life touching projects and I asked are these ones death touching.
May the envious perish.

Politics / Food For Thoughts On The Akwa Ibom Stadium by jhydosky(m): 12:43pm On Nov 13, 2014
Friday last week, President Goodluck Jonathan, accompanied by Presidents John Mahama of Ghana and Alassane Quattara of Cote d’Ivorie flew to Akwa Ibom State and inaugurated the 30, 000-capacity Akwa Ibom International Stadium, called the “Nest of champions.” The project was wholly financed by the state government.

Days before the event, some journalists fed us to constipation with stories of the stadium’s magnificence. They threw up the phrase “world class” while describing the edifice that at some point it became clichéd. You would think they ought to take some time and enlighten us on the projected revenue earnings of the project.

The state governor, Godswill Akpabio, was the man of the moment. Like most Nigerian politicians, Akpabio loves hyperboles and there was no better occasion to dish them out than at the occasion. If he had stopped at envisioning world-beaters springing from the stadium, his hyperboles would have been less insufferable. But bent on maximising his photo-op, he launched into the worth of the global sports industry, noted the earnings of sporting stars like boxer Floyd Mayweather, footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and tennis star Serena Williams, and concluded that Nigeria deserves some share of the money.

How that was supposed to happen from the stadium apparently escaped the governor’s top-down tunnel vision. I guess his speechwriters left that to his listeners to figure out by themselves.

The National Stadium, Lagos – like, the similarly named National Stadium, Abuja, – are imposing sports facilities built on crass rationale and ambiguous dreams. Nigeria has yet to visualise how to make these projects a money making venture. How does Akpabio’s own propose to be different?

For those about to defend Akpabio’s sporting vision, a caveat: This is not the first time he imposed a white elephant, for that is what the stadium is, on the state. There are other glaring instances of his misplaced priorities.

In March, The Nation reported that Akwa Ibom was going to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with SnowValley Europe Limited for the building of a snow resort. You read that right; a snow resort in Akwa Ibom State! Akpabio was quoted as saying, “This project is not only essential in Nigeria but also in West Africa. We want to move the country forward with this type of project. The world is a global village and we need our children to compete with the rest of the world by creating quality facilities.”

How a snow resort in Uyo will translate into West African children competing effectively with the rest of the world might have to be prised out of the governor’s hyperactive imagination.

Then, the Tropicana Entertainment Centre, built at a staggering N33bn, is another instance. In July, The Nation again reported, “Initially, N100 was charged at the cinema. After stabilising the centre and ensuring enough traffic flow of people, the rate was increased to N250 while the state government is still subsidising the amount. During one of his visits to the centre, Governor Akpabio explained that the state government was subsidising the centre to encourage the low income earners enjoy one of the best facilities of the state government. Akpabio admitted that the economy of the state has not developed to the extent where the low income earners would be spending N1, 500 in watching a movie.”

You might want to ask Akpabio why his government built an uneconomical entertainment centre that was obviously not part of his people’s immediate priorities. Where in the world does the state subsidise entertainment? And, was he not one of the governors who stoutly rejected fuel subsidy in 2012?

Then in November, the same governor launches a multi-billion-naira stadium. Given more time and enough money, Akpabio will build a shrine to the god of hedonism. He seems to prefer the easier and superficial road to development; the one that gives us something to gawk at, praise and even celebrate with a vanity fair. Such pretentious achievements do not take hard work neither do they require profundity of thoughts. Instead, they exist on abracadabra – you keep looking in one direction while the sleight of hand is going on elsewhere.

Before Akpabio embarked on these projects, did he work with feasibility studies? Did he pay a visit to Tinapa in nearby Calabar and ask himself why that project, launched with dazzling fanfare, has failed to generate the kind of patronage then Cross River State Governor Donald Duke envisioned?

Just how many matches can be played in Akpabio’s “world-class” stadium every year to guarantee the place running without the government having to give it a crutch to stand? If 30, 000 people paid N1, 000 to watch matches in that stadium every weekend (assuming that is ever possible), will it buy the diesel for the many generators necessary to supply power and keep the place running?

His comparing the Nigerian sports industry to foreign one misses an important point: the cultural economy the Oyinbo have built around their sports industry is akin to religion in and of itself. Until you have a country where someone will travel from Mubi, Adamawa State to Uyo simply to watch his local team play, investing in huge sporting facilities in Nigeria is sheer waste of resources.

The trouble with the likes of Akpabio, really, is that they are afflicted with the Udoji syndrome – so much money, practically non-existent development ideas. In the 70s, when Nigeria suddenly found itself awash with money, then Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, was reported to have gleefully declared that they had no clue what to do with money. Part of their efforts at spending was to create the “Udoji award” and that era witnessed heightened profligacy that wrecked the economy. The irony is that we accumulate these historical experiences but we never seem to learn from them.

Today, Akwa Ibom is rich, perhaps richer than several African countries put together. The state has a relatively small population and as Akpabio admitted, a number of them are low-income earners. In such a context, it is unsurprising that his dreams are easily exhausted that he resorts to building monuments to vanity.

If Akwa Ibom has so much money, is it too much to save for the future? With the unpredictability of oil earnings, what happens if global prices of oil should crash as is the case now with Nigeria? How does the state survive? And if he has an aversion to savings, should he and his co-Niger Delta governors not begin to consider some kind of regional cooperation, and build regenerative infrastructure that will take advantage of geographical proximity? Collectively, their humongous earnings can be used to set up infrastructure that make for a conducive investing atmosphere. That way, there will be jobs for the people. With their income level raised, they will be able to afford the simple pleasures of life such as buying their movie tickets.

Oga OP. I greet you.
It would have been Nice if you came up with the "Lies" of both GEJ and GMB.
We should not be hypocritical about this, the purpose of your research seeks to undermine Buhari and indirectly elevate the image of GEJ.

Are you saying this govt was better than GMB's?? Sincerely and in all honesty ?? Is that what you are saying OP ??

Well, you can not ask me to make the same mistake I made in 2011. I have sincerely asked myself if I was proud of my choice last term and my answer is No.

As for Buhari, he may not be the best but you can't deny he is the lesser of two (2) evils (since everyone believes there are no good Nigerians) How many past president lives his kind of life? How many Ex-president's daughter teaches or lead the everyday life Nigerians live?
Therefore, going by my assessment, logic and what I can feel of my environment... My natural choice is CHANGE.

And my choice as of today remains Buhari -- if for anything to kick out cluelessness and irresponsibility out of govt. Moreso, i will be correcting my mistake of last term.

Economy

There can never be any more lie than this and it’s shameful that Nigerian youths have swallowed this greatest lie of this century hook, line and sinker. Before I present my facts, the first question we must ask is this, was the Nigeria total loan and debt during the Shagari regime a mare $50 million? The answer is no, the Nigeria debt profile by the time Shagari left office was $14 billion according to CBN aanual report 1988 as reported here http://www.ccsenet.org/journal/index.php/jpl/article/viewFile/670/647

By the time Buhari left office in 1985, the debt has risen to $19 billion as reported by the Nigeria debt management office http://www.dmo.gov.ng/ardrnigeriaexternalanddomesticdebt.php Here is what the DMO had to say “By 1985 the debt profile had deteriorated seriously due to persistent inability of the country to meet its external debt service obligations. This resulted in mounting arrears and unmanageable growth of the debt stock relative to available resources. The external debt stock, which was about US$8.855 billion in 1980, grew to nearly US$19 billion by 1985”
The question we must ask therefore, which loan did GMB paid for that made Nigeria debt free? If Nigeria wasn't debt free under Buhari, why the lie?

While this is true, it must be said that in the year 1984 when he had a full 1 year, inflation went from 22.2% to 40.9%

Lets take some perspective from here, Nigeria’s GDP per capita in 1980 was $849.87, by 1983 it was $428.13 however, by the time GMB left office, it was $330.98. But since we are doing Nigeria's GDP by Purchasing Power Parity, by 1980 it was 785.60, by 1985 it was 764.36 (1983 = 719.77, 1984 = 693.36 and 1985 = 764.36)

I don’t know how this is being hyped up as his achievement, however, the refusal to devalue the Naira was started by Shagari Government. If this is achievement, the Government of GEJ also halted the devaluation of Naira

So GEJ advised Akpabio and even Sule Lamido on the infrastructures in their states abi? We know whose credit it is.

So GEJ has BUILT 9 Federal Universities huh??
Let us have the pix !! Universities that will NOT begin admission in the next 4 years. I won't even talk abt the existing ones.

Show us the pictures of the 8 completed hospitals if it's true. Hospitals that will not be completed in another 4 years!! The existing ones are groaning in need of more Funds. Imagine a LASUTH taking the shine off LUTH... It is that bad!!

Agriculture?? How many agric companies have sprung up ? What volume of investment has it drawn?? Is Agric revolution all about Fertilizer distribution?

UNTIL NIGERIANS BEGINS TO HOLD LEADERS RESPONSIBLE BASED ON TANGIBLE DELIVERABLES, THEY WILL SEEK TO FOOL US WITH FICTION.

We should ask them, your Excellencies, You may present your COMPLETED projects....

4 years is enough to have COMPLETED projects in your name, no matter how small!! We shouldn't condone mediocrity!

Did anyone notice the Generator in the pix ?? shocked

Something has to be done quickly about electricity in this country. As beautiful as the airport appears, It is dead without Electric power.

Kudos to GEJ sha and the performing Lamido.

@ OP. I can understand your misery. Although I have not tried that route and that JEBBA-MOKWA road (and i am terrified by your experience).
But another miserable road I can confirm is the road from Okenne to Makurdi. My people, I wish I had walked that day!!

I don't know the name of the road but just board a car to Makurdi from Okene... You will be ashamed to be a Nigerian!!
It is not funny at all.

Buhari/Fashola Ticket is my ideal ticket.
Fashola harldy comes across as a Muslim.

Are we saying we voted for GEJ primarily beacuse he is a christian??
For me. That was not my main reason and believe same applies to so many others.
