Exclusive: Red Cross Symbol Not a Religious Sign – Says Red Cross Secretary as the Group Seeks Muslim Community’s Collaboration The Red Cross Society in Enugu has paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Imam of the Central mosque in the state to introduce and seek the collaboration of the Muslim community in addressing humanitarian challenges facing the state. Speaking during the visit, the organization’s Branch Secretary, Mr Tony Udegbu, described the Red Cross Society as a ‘’voluntary humanitarian organisation that is open to all irrespective of the religion, tribe, class, or political affiliation’’. Mr. Udegbu added that the Red Cross sign which the organisation is known for was not sign a religious sign as being misunderstood in some quarters but rather a reverse of the Switzerland flag which was adopted to honour the founder of the Red Cross, Sir Jean Henry Dunant, who was from the country. The Branch Secretary further appealed for a synergy with the Muslim community to address humanitarian challenges in the state. ‘’Our strength as a volunteer-based organization lies in the capacity of our volunteers that can be found in every community of the state. We, therefore, seek for more volunteers from this community that will be trained on several life-saving skills that will empower them to respond to emergencies and alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable ones’’ In his remarks, the Chief Imam of the Central Mosque, Saeed Zulqarnaini, commended the Red Cross for their selfless humanitarian service which he said has been felt in every part of the country. ‘’The activities of the Red Cross are not new to us, because most of us have in one way or the other benefitted from their benevolence and I want to commend the effort and time they have devoted to serving humanity. ‘’We are open to this partnership because it will in no small measure empower our children, youths and even the mothers amongst us’’. Politics / How Travelers Were Stuck At Itobe Bridge, Kogi For Several Hours (see Video) by joelobi: 12:39am On Nov 22, 2020 |
Travelers who traveled to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja on Friday were halted by massive traffic jam at the Itobe Bridget, Kogi State, African News Today has gathered. Motorists and commuters plying the Itobe-Ajaokuta- bridge in Kogi State linking the Eastern part of the country to Abuja were left sweating at the bridge for several hours after a trailer broke down in the middle of the bridge, causing gridlock which started around 4:00 pm. One of the lanes of the two-lane bridge had been barricaded for repair works since the beginning of the year, leaving motorists with only one lane in the ever-busy highway. The effect of the breakdown of the trailer in the bridge caused great difficulty to vehicles that plied the road as they had to wait for long period before intervention by individuals and uniformed personnel led to gradual ease of the traffic. The repair works on the bridge is believed to be part of the Okene-Ajaokuta-Itobe road construction by the Federal Government. Though one section of the dual carriage way has been partly fixed, the road is yet to be opened to road users as motorist maneuver the dusty and untarred single lane. A passenger identified as Hillary Amadi lamented the amount of time he had to spend on the bridge while urging government to expedite the construction going on in the closed lane. He said, “I find it perplexing that road users would have to spend more than three hours to pass through a bridge which ordinarily shouldn’t take more than 40 minutes. I have been stranded here for over three hours without knowing the actual cause of the standstill in the movement”. Commenting on the cause of the gridlock, Charles Osakwe, a motorist who witnessed the incidence said, the delay was informed by the breakdown of a trailer midway through the bridge. It was worsened by the unavailability of a towing van which could have saved the situation.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GRNUwilQRE Source: https://africannewstoday.com/travel/how-travelers-were-stuck-at-itobe-bridge-kogi-for-several-hours-see-video/

Education / COOU VC Reacts After Three Students Died In Three Days by joelobi: 9:40am On Nov 18, 2020 |
The Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Greg Nwakoby has said that the management of the institution is making prompt efforts to checkmate the spate of road accidents claiming students' lives along the major road leading to the Igbariam Campus of the school, African News Today gathered. Professor Nwakoby who disclosed this in an interview with Anambra Broadcasting Service, in his Igbariam Campus office, noted that decisive steps have already been taken to ensure that the rising tragedy is permanently averted. The atmosphere around the Igbariam Campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, had become gloomy, perilous and tense after three students of the university died in three separate autocrashes along the major road leading to the institution in the space of three days from Friday, November 13th to Sunday, November 15th, 2020. Two of those three tragic accidents involved commercial motorcycles, a means of conveyance that the students seemed to have found faster and most convenient given the ample kilometers separating the campus in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area, from the main students' resident area in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area. One of the victims of the fatal accident which happened on Friday, November 13, 2020, Miss Chinecherem Anyacho, from Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, is said to be the only daughter of her parents. Speaking to the ABS, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Nwakoby, who had already released a press statement noting that an immediate response would be taken to nip the ugly trend, stated that the Anambra State Commissioner of Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, and that of Transport, Mr Uchenna Okafor, had followed him to the sites of the crashes, after which it was agreed that speed limit bumps would be constructed on the road to help checkmate overspeeding which is the major cause of the accidents Professor Nwakoby also noted an official letter had been sent to Governor Willie Obiano to brief him on the development, stating that while private sectors are encouraged to invest in students' accommodation in the university, three new hostels being constructed inside the school by the institution's management would be ready next year to save the precarious situation of having the students come to school from far where there their hostels are located. In a telephone interview, the President of the Student Union Government in the Igbariam Campus of the university, Comrade Kizito Okemadu, who expressed sadness at the ugly circumstance, called on the state government to intervene urgently in the situation by providing buses to convey the students to and fro the school and to also put a ban on motorcycles plying the road. Politics / If You Burn Factories, Release Prisoners, It Is Anti-investment – Buhari by joelobi: 8:06am On Oct 30, 2020 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has identified the agricultural sector as an upswing in the country which could be harnessed for economic growth. Buhari who disclosed this in a meeting held last week with all former heads of state to discuss the state of the nation after the shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos regretted that the protest which started as a peaceful and legitimate demand for an end to police brutality in the country was hijacked by hoodlums. The hijack sabotaged the goal of the demonstrations. According to a statement by Presidential aide on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President while thanking the former leaders for commending the steps taken by his administration to address the protests said he regretted that the demonstrations degenerated to violence. The statement which was titled, ‘#EndSARS: Inside PMB’S parley with former heads of state,’ was part of a weekly publication of Mr Adesina. Speaking on prospects for economic growths and government’s plan to engage the youths, Buhari said that agriculture was a viable sector to be exploited, adding that investors would need stability before investing in the sector. Buhari stated that when violence such as burning factories, releasing prisoners prevail, then it is anti-investment. He said, “I wish we could have stopped the hijacking of the protests. Burning of police stations, freeing of prisoners, can’t be tolerated. Judicial enquiries have commenced, and we will work as reports get back to us. “If you burn factories, release prisoners, then it is anti-investment. We need to behave ourselves.” “Yes, we need to truly behave ourselves. It is only then that things will look up for this blessed but blighted country. If we sow the wind, we reap the whirlwind. If we foment lawlessness, we reap anarchy. If we don’t calm down, and let government serve us, then we would have nobody to blame, except ourselves.” African News Today had reported the shooting of #EndSARS protesters in Lekki toll gate area of Lagos who had camped there for two weeks demanding for an end to police brutality and better governance of the country. Politics / FFK: Suggestions That Govs Ugwuanyi, Umahi, Fayemi Others are Murderers, False by joelobi: 11:52am On Oct 29, 2020 |
Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has defended governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State who has come under fire for sponsoring the killing of irate youths who took advantage of the #EndSARS movement. Fani-Kayode said that those leading the narrative of governor Ugwuanyi being a murderer are using the #EndSARS agitation to undermine the integrity of the governor and destabilise his state. The former minister who disclosed this in a series of tweets on his verified twitter handle on Thursday said that Ugwuanyi along with governors Umahi, Obiano, Ayade, Udom, Makinde, Fayemi among others have always been on the side of their people. Fani-Kayode said that if the allegations were to be true, he would have been the first to speak out and condemn them. He said, “I have been in the forefront of those fighting against injustice & oppression for the last 5 years & I have spoken out more than most. “I wish to state loudly & clearly that the suggestion that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu state, is a heartless murderer or a killer is false. “If he was I would be the first to say so. The truth is that he has always been on the side of his people. Same with Gov. Umahi,Gov. Obiano,Gov. Ayade, Gov. Udom,Gov. Makinde,Gov. Fayemi,Gov. Matawalle,Gov. Oyetola & Gov. Tambuwal. Had it not been for the efforts of these leaders far many more people would have been killed in their respective states over the last few years by forces that are utterly heartless & evil. I know the role they played to save lives & protect their people even though much is not known to the public. “If they were evil I would be the first to say so & I would attack them openly & forcefully. There are some good Governors and there are some bad ones. These ones are amongst the good. They are not amongst those Governors that horde food & Covid 19 palliatives or that are ready to kill their own people or crush them simply for protesting or conducting demonstrations. We know those who do that sort of thing & that have innocent blood on their hands. “Those that are spreading lies about Ugwanyi and the other Governers that I listed here and that are using the #EndSARS agitation to undermine their integrity and destabilise their states are cruel and misguided. Not every leader is bad, not every Governor is evil and not every politician has failed. We must learn to separate the wheat from the chaff.” Recall that hoodlums had taken advantage of the peaceful #EndSARS protests across the country to loot businesses and vandalise public infrastructure, prompting some state governments to deploy security opertaives and impose curfew to curb the violence. https://africannewstoday.com/politics/fani-kayode-sugg…urderer-is-false/

Education / ASUU Reveals When Strike Will Be Called Off by joelobi: 8:15am On Oct 27, 2020 |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it is ready to call off its ongoing strike as soon as the Federal Government conducts an integrity test on the proposed payroll system, University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS). ASUU said that its members are ready to return to the classroom once government shows commitment to implementing contentious issues. ASUU had opposed enrollment into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). It rather developed the UTAS as a peculiar payment platform for its members. ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi in an interview with newsmen revealed that while a proposed meeting with government on Monday was cancelled, the body was expecting the government to give clearance to National Information Technology Development Agency to conduct integrity test on UTAS. He said “The integrity test will be handled by NITDA, it is government that will facilitate it because NITDA is a government agency and unless you get clearance from the government that test cannot be conducted.” “We are still talking, we have given them the position of our members, we are thinking we should be able to hold a meeting this week if they have not changed plans. The meeting for Monday was postponed. In principal, they have accepted UTAS and told us to go for the test, and on our part, we have started the process,” Ogunyemi said while commenting on readiness of government to adopt UTAS. He added, “We had presented UTAS at three levels, starting with the Ministry of Education, Senate President and members of his team, officials of Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, where all other stakeholders were present, including NITDA, all stakeholders have witnessed the presentation and the next stage of integrity test is what we are moving in to. If government facilitates it, it is not something that should drag for too long at all. We don’t foresee any problem with UTAS.” “Our members are ready to resume work as early as government is ready to play its part. I’m sure you are not suggesting that our members should resume on empty stomach or the strike should be suspended without any concrete action on the side of the government. We don’t like to stay away from our work because we like our students, they are also our children. As far as we are concerned, we don’t have issue with going back to work, but we want more sincerity on the side of government. https://africannewstoday.com/politics/ASUU-reveals-whe…ll-be-called-off/ 1 Share

Over the past year there has been a surge in attacks in the Anglophone region, with many people killed, abducted or injured. “The Cameroonian authorities must send out a strong and clear signal that such appalling crimes will not be tolerated, by immediately investigating these killings. The perpetrators must be identified, arrested, prosecuted and tried in a fair trial. “We also call on authorities to guarantee at all times and in all places the free exercise of the right to education, which is under threat.” Source: https://africannewstoday.com/news/cameroon-school-shooting-an-atrocity-that-underscores-the-urgency-of-protecting-ordinary-people-amnesty-international/

Politics / Nigeria Governors Forum Speaks On Hoarding Palliatives by joelobi: 11:18am On Oct 26, 2020 |
Following allegations of hoarding COVID-19 palliatives, governors under the aegis of Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF) debunked hoarding the palliatives intended for distribution to poor Nigerians to curb the hardship induced by the pandemic. The governors in a statement titled, ‘Governors and the CACOVID Palliatives,’ issued by Abudulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, Head of Media and Public Affairs of the NGF, said some state governors delayed distribution of all the palliatives to ‘keep a strategic reserve ahead of a projected second wave of COVID-19’. The AGF said governors have set up judicial panels of inquiry to address concerns of the #EndSARS movement and to prosecute officers of the Nigeria Police that violated the right of individuals. According to the statement, the NGF said, “The NGF regrets the loss of lives and property occasioned by the violent protests that erupted, and calls for calm. “The NGF reemphasises and corrects the impression that palliatives found in warehouses that were broken into in Lagos and some other states were kept in storage for members of the society, especially our vulnerable citizens. “The erroneous impression in the public domain that these palliatives were hoarded is not just inaccurate, entirely erroneous and untrue but also mischievous, to say the least.” “For the avoidance of doubt, some of the palliatives had the CACOVID stamp embossed on them, meaning that their source is unambiguous. “Until mid-October, when the NGF had its last meeting, up to ten states had not participated in the flag-off ceremonies for the distribution of palliatives in their states. This was because the items meant for distribution in these states had not been completely received from CACOVID. “Some other states that still had palliatives in their warehouses chose to keep a strategic reserve ahead of a projected second wave of COVID-19. “As of a couple of weeks ago, some states were still receiving palliatives from the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.” The forum assured donors of the palliatives that proper record of the items were kept prior to the looting of the warehouses. https://africannewstoday.com/politics/nigeria-governor…ding-palliatives/
