It is important one has a mind of his/her own without being arrogant.

Popular opinion can be very derailing if you base your decisions on them, because many people are lazy and to not check the facts. The additional danger is that some of the people who will share this opinion are people very close to you or whom you hold in high regard, so there is a tendency to trust their judgment without checking the facts.

There is a danger of a persuasive personality, some of those who share these opinions can be very persuasive in there discussion and knock you of your guard to align to their opinion.

One example of the most dangerous perceptions to base your decision on the choice of a partner is the notion that men are bad or women are just unreasonable. A lot of these self preservation ideas are born out of experiences of individuals/older ones and most times they have been created to defend the person not resolve problems. Resolving problems is the better approach.
