I'm glad you see this, I believe you'll be too after reading through..

As Designers, there's always the want and desire to create masterpieces.. be it Products Packaging Designs or Visual Identities Designs. We sought for Design resources, ideas and softwares to help bring our creativity to life. But.. we mostly ignore these basics;

A. Your Designs, irrespective of what they are should communicate. How? It should speak for something. It might be for a brand, an event or even an individual idea.
Don't just create Posters, Webpost Designs, Fliers or Brochures with people still asking what the Design is all about.

B. Less is usually better, mostly.
When Designs are make, most Designers will use almost every resources they can get their hands on.. they'll use shapes, images, lines, colours, and Every other thing they can get hold of.. sometimes, beauty is seen in less.
Learn to manage the elements that makes up your Designs.

C. Have a story to your Designs. Like, why did you put this line here, why is the colour lighter here and deeper over there.. why make the image a vector instead of being raster...
A Design with a story convinces the Clients and audiences even more...

HOW CLIENTS CHOOSE DESIGNERS TO WORK WITH

Have you ever wonder why some designers barely have enough skills and creativity as you do but then, they end up getting more jobs than you do?.

Some say it's luck, some say it's hard work while some just think the clients are just being picky.. irrespective of what people say or think about this topic, how really do Clients choose the Designers they work with?

Let's do some quizzes..
If you're a Business owner, looking for someone to put out your business or products or services in a convincing and creative way, who would you want?

A. Someone who is super talented and creative but have yet to work with projects similar to yours?

B. Someone with low creativity but have enough creative tools to carry out your projects?

Which of the category will you choose?

And that's really how most Clients choose their Designers.. They ask;

a. Does the Designer have working experience? Has he/she done something like what they want?

b. Does the Designer have the means to deliver? What tools and skills does he have to contribute even if he/she hasn't done that kind of projects before...

And that's the basics of every valuable Business transactions. For every Designer, the Client wants to know if you've done that kind of projects before, if you have experience..
Or, if you have the tools and skills to deliver even if you haven't done that kind of projects before..

And that's leaves you with the question, how do you get chosen?

One simple answer; BE IN THE TWO CATEGORIES. Then you have better chance and as people say, better luck to be the one that will handle that big projects.

First, build up your skills, your creative mind and how idealistic you can be. Then, work for yourself. Build up projects for yourself and work on it as if you're on a contract with a Client. Deliver and access yourself, find someone to do it for you, so you'll be told what needs to be done more better.
Then, source for tools and don't hesitate to flaunt them while talking with your Clients.

You can only be an interesting choice if you are competitive, talented and resourceful.

HOW A CLIENT SEES A GRAPHIC DESIGNER IN COMPARISON TO HOW A GRAPHIC DESIGNER SEES A CLIENT.

As a Graphic Designer, your Clients are sure not limited to a particular age, gender or race.. there's the possibilities that you can directly get a project from a banker, a lawyer even the governor of a state if you're chanced.

Thing is, most Graphic Designers see their Clients for the worth of their projects, their budgets and how well they bring businesses. They measure a particular Client with another and then they deliver their services in respect to that.
You can relate if you have multiple Clients or handle multiple projects.

While on the other hand, a large amount of potential Clients see their Graphic Designers for how big their design brands are. They transact businesses and interact with the designer in this measure.
When a Client see that a particular Designer is more of a freelancer and have no physical work office and staffs and all of that, they think he/she is a rookie. Like, he/she is not worth the amount of pricings they're being given. Like, he/she can not deliver.

Should that really be so?

They're Graphic Design Brands that works with big Businesses and yet, they offer little services in comparison to the high amounts these businesses pay them. While they're small individual Graphic Design Brands that have so much to offer but the pay amount they get is pitiful.

Should a Client really see a Designer for how big labelled he/she is or for the creative ideas, talents and contributions they can get from such Designer?

Should a Graphic Designer see his/her client for the budgets they bring or for the opportunities and rewards that comes afterwards while working with them?

Brands like Apple, Amazon, eBay, Alibaba etc have Designers they trust and can rely on. Why? Somehow, they see these Designers for what contributions they truly can offer and how loyal they're. It's not necessary about how big the designers are.

Take BBC, CNN, FBI, PEPSI and FIFA for examples.. how elaborate is their logo? Their logos are minimal, distinct and precise. These brands prefer talents to name, they prefer idealistic designers to famous ones, they are convenient if you can deliver their desired projects with a single software rather than owning various tools and equipments and yet, lacking in renditions.

Stories are, these Designers weren't paid much when the businesses started but as the businesses grow, they never dejected their designers. They appreciates them.

And that is how Client should truly see a Graphic Designer. For what they can offer. For their versatility, their creativity, their ability to get a whole developed concept from a single word.

Designers should know these; look for the potential benefits that comes with every Clients. In the long run, what do you stand to gain from such Clients.. ?

Get paid for your jobs, tame your Clients well and see them for what you can gain from them, aside the money they pay.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND A CLIENT.

Just like most search engines will say, A Graphic Designer is an individual that appropriate the use of elements (texts, images, colours and shapes) to pass a message. Mostly for other individuals or groups or companies and also for personal uses.

While a Client can be anybody. Anyone who's willing to appreciate and pay for a service. In this case, a Graphic Designer's service.

How's a Graphic Designer related to a Client?
They can only be formally related as business partners. A Client can be a Designer's friend, relative and even spouse.. it's absolutely normal. Just like how a Client can be a total stranger to a Designer.

Regardless of the relationship between them, both of them are aware that they're transacting some kinds of businesses and that can subconsciously lead them to being formal with each other. That too is normal. But we all know, to an extent. Neither of them would want to ruin the bond they share, outside business.

What needs to be understood is the fact that most businesses built on Clients' familiarities don't tend to generate more profits. But then, you're more chanced to earn favors.

Favors and Profits - how's that even related?
You see, Profits are good for business but then, favors enhance the relationship between the Designer and Client. And consecutively, the relationship between the Designer and Client is very essential.

The Client needs to feel that a Designer has the interest in his/her ideas or products or brand aside of the money he/she is offering. That can only be accomplished with a good inter-personal relationship between them.

As a Designer, you need all of the Profits that you can get but don't forget to build that solid relationship with your Clients. Imagine your clients seeing you as their brother/sister.. that'd be more than awesome.

While some people say DO NOT DO FREE JOBS. they're right, business-wise. But then you yourself will get to see that you need to compromise on that in some cases. Most businesses strategist knows that.

Graphic designs is more than that. It's a lifestyle, it's art, it's a career.
Just like how doctors and engineers and musicians contribute so much to the society, graphic designers do too.
Have you ever seen a graphic designer glued to his computer screen for hours, alone in his head? You can relate.
