Romance / Re: Having an Affair With My Cousin by katie: 11:05am On Jan 04, 2006
As it happens, no. I have no cousins worth dating!

And they all live miles away anyway.

But I got interested in the subject because of my friend. In this day and age when we have so many possibilities, I also find it slightly odd to get married to your cousin, but if that's what the lass wants, so be it. I think people opposed the wedding a lot not only because it was her cousin, but because it all happened so suddenley, and there were other issues besides.

But there you go...everyone lives their own life! As long as we're free to decide... smiley

OK!
Here's a New York Times article of interest for all of you uninformed individuals!
Marrying and having children with your first cousin does not appear to pose any major threat to your children's health, so you can all stop speculating and moralising!

P.S. If I were you, I'd quit the Bible-bashing and get some common sense knocked into you instead.

My God I can't believe this conversation's been going on for so long!
I dunno where you're all from, but it's pretty much irrelevant. In this whole making out with your cousin affair, it seems to me that you have to look beyond morality, the bible and all that. As someone mentioned, the fundamental reason why incest is a taboo and a no-no in most societies is that it isn't much good for the human species in the long run, as excessive inbreeding ends up causing physical handicaps and brain damage.

That said, if you live in a society where relatively little inbreeding has taken place (i.e. your mum isn't married to her cousin and nor is your grandfather!), then the chances of your children turning out funny are probably relatively low. You must however be aware of the odds.

As for public opinion on the subject, it varies across the globe, and it's up to you to get used to the fact that it might cause controversy. One of my best friends is married to her cousin, and initially noone could believe she would go through with it, especially her parents, but she was determined and in love, and didn't let anything stand in her way. The people around her have got used to it since then.

So there you have it...the rest is up to you!
Good luck.
