A child that has never witnessed war will think war is just killing of people only. They forget that: war is starvation, war is rape, war is deprivation of movement, war is fear, war is lack of access to health care, war brings diseases, war is homelessness, war is losing children, war is losing parents, war Is losing spouses, war is losing loved ones, war is creating an entire generation who will be illiterates, war is so much more than just shooting guns and ending lives. Even after war, it will take decades to heal, to reconcile, to build etc Ask Rwanda, Congo, Liberia, South Sudan, Libya, Syria etc War in reality is different from war in the movies War is wished for; only by those who have only watched it in the movies...... Crime / Wrong Branding Of A Kidnapped Victim At Afaka Rigachikun As An Sss Staff by kayez: 1:48pm On Sep 24, 2020 |
It is a known fact that the level of insecurity in the country has now reached an alarming stage. To the extent that criminals now move from house to house to waylay and most times abduct their victims. One begins to wonder if government exist in most States of the country. Our highways have so far become endangered routes. Imagine my home State Kaduna that used to be peaceful and serene have now turned into an epicentre of horror and pogrom in the country and yet no tangible counter-action or measures have been put in place by the government to reverse this ugly trend. The shocking news of the kidnap of a close relative Goddy, who was abducted along Afaka village in Rigachikun Kaduna has continued to give the entire family sleepless nights. Especially as the young man has always been kind and compassionate to people around him. He is a man loved by many because of some outstanding traits he possesses. Despite his little educational background, Goddy has been carrying his small family through proceeds of his farms and entrepreneurial skills. I really feel for his wife and children who have struggled to even feed in his absence. I recently came across an article where Goddy was addressed as a staff of SSS and I wonder the reason for that because the Goddy that I know of has never been employed before by any government agency nor even a private enterprise. This is somebody that keeps body and soul together through farming and other ‘side hustle’. The branding of Goddy as a government agent by some fake, unreliable bloggers and online journalist seems to be elongating his stay in the hands of his captors who must be wishing to make a fortune from his purported employers. I can only plead with them to desist from compounding an already complicated issue. We will continue to pray for his safe return from the custody of your captors because it has not been easy on the family, especially his wife and parents who have been going through hell to feed and at the same time to secure his release. Politics / Amnesty International Says Fg Responsible For 3,641 Deaths By Killer Herdsmen by kayez: 11:22am On Dec 18, 2018 |
Amnesty International says FG Responsible for 3,641 deaths by Killer Herdsmen Amnesty International has blamed the Federal Government for the killing of 3,641 persons during the clashes between herdsmen and farmers from 2016 to 2018. In its investigative report on the clashes in parts of the country released on Monday, AI said the Federal Government beyond issuing statements to condemn the attacks did not do enough to “bring those reasonably suspected of involvement in crimes to justice”. The body claimed that 2,075 persons were killed in the clashes in 2018 alone. According to the report, the Federal Government failed in “fulfilling its constitutional responsibility of protection of lives and property by refusing to investigate, arrest and prosecute perpetrators of attacks”. AI noted that 22 states were affected, with Benue recording the highest number of deaths – 726. Adamawa followed with 540 and Plateau with 492 lives. The report titled, ‘Harvest of death: Three years of bloody clashes between farmers and herders in Nigeria’ also said many lives were lost in Zamfara, Taraba, Kaduna and Nasarawa states. The report partly reads, “This report documents the violent clashes between members of farmer communities and members of herder communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the northern part of the country, over access to resources: water, land and pasture. “The report shows how government’s inaction fuels impunity, resulting in attacks and reprisals, with at least 3,641 people killed between January 2016 and October 2018; 57 per cent of them in 2018 alone. “Beyond issuing statements condemning attacks after they happen, not enough is being done by the federal and state governments to rein in attackers and bring those reasonably suspected of involvement in crimes to justice. “Several victims told AI that they recognised some of their attackers. Communities have also sent reports to authorities and in some cases provided information about attacks. But in many cases, no arrests were made. Some local and state officials have also confirmed this failure to AI.” It added, “Our research showed that these attacks were well planned and coordinated, with the use of weapons like machine guns and AK-47 rifles. Yet, little has been done by the authorities in terms of prevention, arrests and prosecutions, even when information about the suspected perpetrators was available. “The failure of the government has also been in the area of compensation and resettlement of displaced people. In addition to the loss of lives, the Federal Government reckons that the farmers/herders clashes cost the country N5tn. In May 2018, the Federal Government released the sum of N10bn for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of villages affected by the crisis. It is not clear how the funds will be disbursed and which communities will benefit.” The body also slammed the military and the police for their failure to address the problems. It said, “The AI research reveals a disturbing pattern of failure on the part of security forces to protect people from vicious and mostly deadly attacks by armed groups. Eyewitnesses, victims, local officials and others independently interviewed have recounted several incidents where police and soldiers have either ignored credible warnings of impending attacks or abandoned people during or just before deadly attacks by heavily armed groups, suspected to be members of herder or farmer communities.” AI said it visited 56 communities in Adamawa, Benue, Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara states affected by the clashes and conducted 262 interviews, including interviewing people in remote communities in Nasarawa and Plateau states. However, the army dismissed the report, saying AI’s aim was to destabilise the country. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig Gen Sani Usman, on Monday in a statment, said, “The Nigerian branch of Amnesty International that has hitherto been well respected has deviated from the core values, principles and objectives of the original Amnesty International domiciled in the United Kingdom. “There is credible information that the Nigerian branch of the International Non-governmental Organisation is determined to destabilise the Nigerian nation. This is noted through fabrication of fictitious allegations of alleged human rights abuses against the Nigerian security forces and a clandestine sponsorship of dissident groups to protest, as well as unfounded allegations against the leadership of the Nigerian military. “Nigerians should be wary of AI because its goals are to destabilise Nigeria and to dismember it. The army has no option but to call for the closure of AI offices in Nigeria, if such recklessness continues.” https://punchng.com/herdsmen-killings-ai-blames-fg-for-3641-deaths/ 47 Likes 8 Shares

Politics / The American Civil War Of 1861: Lessons For The Igbos And The Biafran Struggle by kayez: 10:07am On Jun 16, 2017 |
Recently, I published an article with the title, “The Merchant Called Nnamdi Kanu and His 2019 Senatorial Ambition". The responses have been quite amazing as reactions keep pouring into my email from far and near; some commendations, and others outright threats. Well I want to deeply appreciate everyone for their well thought out reactions. I will further my arguments in this article on the renewed agitations for Biafra, particularly taking a deep retrospect of history. A great philosopher once said, “...hindsight is better than foresight”. The truth is that the more historical minded you are the better you can appreciate the present and chart an effective cause for the future. For this reason, I am going to lay a foundation today that will aid further examination of the abundant opportunities before the Igbos, now that secessionist agitations are raging. Meanwhile, some excerpts in this article were taken from published works on the American Civil War, particularly, https://www.civilwar.org. Now the American Civil War was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America, a collection of eleven southern states that left the Union in 1860 and formed their own country in order to protect the institution of slavery. The southern states of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee, seceded immediately Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. Lincoln though was from the slave-state of Kentucky in the North refused to recognize the Confederate States, instead fought to keep the South in the Union. The interesting fact was that between 1776 when America gained independence and George Washington was elected President, to the year of the secession in 1860, America had fifteen presidents, ten of which were from the South, and five of whom were presidents for two terms each. Indeed the south dominated the American political space. However, the abolition of slave trade in Britain in 1807 changed the world order, in which the narrative of slave trade transformed drastically against holding fellow humans bondage. While religious and political leaders in the North of America began to agitate and call for the complete abolition of slave trade, the South who had maintained political dominance blatantly refused to heed the clarion call. They were so blinded by the economic benefits they made from slave-trade that they began to lose political control to the North by the 1840s. In fact the last three presidents before the secession in 1860 were all from the North of America. The greatest lessons from this political misfortune were represented by the years after the civil war, as the South completely lost political relevance in America. For a long time after the Civil War, politicians from the South were considered unelectable. Abraham Lincoln's Vice President, Andrew Johnson was the last Southern president for nearly half a century. After President Woodrow Wilson administration in 1921, it took nearly another half a century before the next Southern president was elected. During these periods Democratic Party rarely nominated Southern presidential candidates, as southerners were tagged with the brush of secession. The northern electorates were equally extremely reluctant to cast a ballot for a southerner. That was how the south lost out completely in the political power structure in America for about 100 years, albeit the 1960s when the South began to regain political control. The first lesson here is that every failed secession attempt comes with its own burden of distrust. The South-East region like the South in America has continued to suffer political consequences from the brushes of the failed secession attempt between 1967 and 1970. Other component parts of Nigeria are seldom convinced that the Biafran dream has been laid to rest. Such distrusts which have grossly affected the political fortunes of the Igbos in the Nigerian project, have been fanned and fuelled by the occasional and at times sustained call for secession. It’s like an aggrieved husband who constantly threatens the wife with divorce at the slightest provocation - that marriage will never see the light of day. As long as he feels there is a better “bride” out there, he WILL NEVER put in the required efforts to work out his current marriage. The wife on her part will perpetually live on the edge of being thrown out of her matrimonial home. But however, the transgression(s) of the wife, the day both parties, starting with the aggrieved husband choose to deal with the emotions of offence and accommodate true forgiveness in his heart that marriage is heading for a successful outcome. The Nigerian civil war remains the bloodiest experience for the Igbos as a people. Fifty years after, the memories of the war remains fresh in our minds. With well over 2.5 million deaths, it has not been easy to allow the emotions of that dastardly experience die, “just like that”. The sentiments remain so strong that it has the capacity of being retained for the next 1000 years. But the danger is this, our children and grandchildren may continue to face the challenge of political and social exclusions in the Nigerian project. Therefore, like Nelson Mandela who successfully helped his people to deal with the emotions of slavery and apartheid regimes in South-Africa, the Igbos now needs a sound leadership that will sincerely advocate and help the people deal with the lingering emotions of the Nigerian civil war and convert the negative experience as their strongest weapons of strength. The South learnt their bitter lessons, took it in their stride and worked assiduously to build the American project. They couldn’t have done that if the quest for secession was not completely laid to rest; and today they have Donald J. Trump as the President of the United States of America. There is no doubt that the Igbos are major stakeholders in the Nigerian project. We must, however, reject Biafran vendors who frequently come on the scene offering false hopes while making merchandize of our inherent burdens. So far, even under the present arrangement, we have proved not to be pushovers, not at all. We must, therefore, deal with negative impediments of the failed secession bid of the 1960s, and choose to integrate ourselves in the Nigerian project. We must work towards dealing with the distrusts which have continued to affect our collective fortunes. We must kill that perception by other Nigerians that we as a people are still desperately seeking ways, by hook or crook, to jettison the Nigerian project. As outlined in the second lesson from the American Civil War which shall be published in my next article, N’digbo is here to stay; and just as without much political power we have largely conquered the economy of this country, with diligence and hard work we are bound to rise and occupy the pride of place in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “Nwaanyi muta ite ofe mmiri mmiri, di ya amuta ipi utara aka were suru ofe.....” Meaning we must learn to change tactics if we are to thrive and emerge victorious in the situation we find ourselves. Frank Eze frankeze1967@gmail.com https://vigil360.com.ng/exclusive-report/646-the-american-civil-war-of-1861-lessons-for-the-igbos-and-the-biafran-struggle-%E2%80%93-frank-eze.html

angels09: Shine ya eye Finally, Nigerian govt. releases details of Paris Club refunds to states The federal government has finally released a breakdown of the first tranche of Paris Club refunds paid to states to date. The payments, totalling N516.38 billion, were made to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory upon the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari on November 21 2016, a statement by Salisu Danbatta, director of information in the Ministry of Finance said. The payments were in partial settlement of longstanding claims by State Governments relating to over-deductions from their Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocation for external debt service arising between 1995 and 2002. The debt service deductions are in respect of the Paris Club, London Club and Multilateral debts of the FG and States. While Nigeria reached a final agreement for debt relief with the Paris Club in October 2005, some States had already been overcharged. The government had initially turned down repeated requests to release the payment details. “The funds were released to state governments as part of the wider efforts to stimulate the economy and were specifically designed to support states in meeting salary and other obligations, thereby alleviating the challenges faced by workers,” the statement said. The releases were conditional upon a minimum of 50 per cent being applied to the payment of workers’ salaries and pensions. The Federal Ministry of Finance said it was reviewing the impact of these releases on the level of arrears owed by State Governments. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/233555-breaking-finally-nigerian-govt-releases-details-of-paris-club-refunds-to-states.html |

Politics / Fayose Earmarks 4 Billion Naira To Elongate Tenure by kayez: 4:54pm On Jun 09, 2017 |
Indications have emerged that Governor Ayo Fayose is poised to elongate his tenure beyond the terminal date in 2018. The Governor who himself recently made this known publicly, has approved the disbursement of the sum 4 billion naira to secure the extension of his tenure and perpetuate himself in office. The governor, who claimed his tenure was cut short by seven months with his impeachment in 2006, has publicly announced his determination to seek legal redress in court. Vigil360 reliably gathered that the Governor is currently reaching out to influential citizens of the state in Ado-Ekiti, Abuja and Lagos, while equally targeting a section of the media to give him the necessary support. Most of his targets including the media are being wooed with cash, as several top law chambers in Lagos, Abuja, and Akure are jostling to handle the case. Already, the Governor has enlisted 13 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) on his legal team, as huge chunk of the cash has been earmarked to lobby judges and other influence agents in the judiciary. The Governor is equally reaching out to traditional rulers, key labour leaders, market women, transport unions, street urchins and less politically aware residents of the state, with the intention of using chaos, intimidation and outright blackmail to bamboozle his way and achieve his aim of staying in office beyond his terminal date in 2018. It will be recalled that Governor Ayodele Fayose was impeached on 15th October, 2006 by 24 out of 26 lawmakers of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on corruption charges. He was accused and found guilty of embezzling state funds, particularly the Ekiti State Poultry Project fund, which he diverted and laundered through foreign accounts domiciled at Knightsbridge International Banking Center of Barclays Bank in London, and Citi Bank in the United States. His alleged complicity in the murder of PDP Chieftain, Ayo Daramola, whom Fayose considered a major threat to his re-election back then, also contributed to his removal. However, the recent launch of the Oshoko Mass Movement (OMM) in Ikere-Ekiti, a pro-Fayose political movement, is part of the grand strategy to solicit the support of gullible young men and women of the state to rally support for the governor’s tenure elongation bid. However, insider sources at the Ekiti State Government House are concerned that Governor Fayose’s unquenchable taste for power may throw the entire state into a constitutional crisis, a situation which could lead to the declaration of another State of Emergency, the second in ten years. https://vigil360.com.ng/politics/20-latest-news/531-fayose-earmarks-4-billion-naira-to-elongate-tenure.html 1 Like 2 Shares

Politics / I Am Full-blooded Idoma (FBI) Not Biafran (picx) by kayez: 5:03pm On Jun 06, 2017 |
I am Full-Blooded Idoma (FBI) and proudly so. The unalloyed loyalty of the Idoma people was demonstrated during the Nigerian civil war. It is a widely known fact that but for the gallantry of the Idomas, Tivs, and other ethnic nationalities from Plateau and old Gongola States the Nigerian civil war would have being squarely lost by Federal troops. And this special group of people have not reneged their loyalty, not just yet; a loyalty to the greater picture of that strong, virile and prosperous Nigeria. It therefore appalled my imagination that one Nnamdi Kanu and his group of misguided IPOB elements will conceive in their wildest imagination that Idomaland is part of the imprudent campaign for a Biafran Republic. GOD FORBID! Now, I grew up to appreciate my Idoma heritage. We are predominantly hardworking farmers by nature and known for our loyalty for whatever we believe in. The Idoma people inhabit the lower western areas of Benue State, and our kindred are found in Cross Rivers, Enugu and Nasarawa States. The Idoma language is classified in the Akweya subgroup which includes Alago, Agatu, Etulo and Yala languages of Benue, Nasarawa and Northern Cross River states. The bulk of the territory is inland, South of River Benue. We are renowned farmers, warriors and hunters of class, but hospitable and peace-loving as well. For instance, the Idoma woman is the most beautiful and cultured lady you can find anywhere in the country. They are home stabilizers and extremely loyal to their marriage covenant. One of the greatest advantages the Idoma people had during the colonization of various ethnic groups was the fact that Idomaland remained largely unknown to the West until the 1920s, leaving much of the colorful traditional culture of the Idoma intact. From the Nigerian civil service, to the Nigerian military and security services, to politics, the Idoma nation has produced some of the finest citizens Nigeria can boast of. The contribution of this special breed of people to national development and unity is second to none and unrivalled in the middle belt region of Nigeria. Infact, while various groups clamour for the balkanization of the country along ethnic and religious lines, I can boldly say that there has never been a time we had a secessionist group in the entire Idomaland. The Idoma man is indeed a true Nigerian who believes in the indivisibility of the nation. How then did Nnamdi Kanu and his band of renegade agitators arrived at the conclusion that Idomaland is part of the so called Biafra Republic? Were we consulted? Did our people ever express the desire to secede from Nigeria? What really is the connection between Idomaland and the Biafra agitation? Yes I agree that there is the proximity in land mass. But it is on record that Idoma and Igbo ethnic groups are two (2) distinct nationalities. We have nothing in common politically. I agree that Igbo traders still patronize major Idoma markets in Agatu, Otukpo, Otukpa and other parts of Idomaland; and that is where it ends. I am therefore using this medium to sound a note of warning and call to attention that the peace-loving people of Idomaland HAVE NEVER and will NEVER be a part of IPOB’s propaganda campaign. Nnamdi KANU and his apologists should as a matter of urgency REMOVE IDOMALAND from the purported map of Biafra Republic, and should SEIZE henceforth to directly or indirectly refer to any of its part in their insidious and sinister campaigns. For Kanu’s information, the Idoma people in the face of provocation are still very much ready to defend their identity against the antics of intruders and misguided miscreants and apologists of the unrealistic pursuit of a Biafra Republic. I therefore call on all Idoma sons and daughters to rise and renounce the shenanigan of Kanu and his group of IPOB brigands. I AM FULL-BLOODED IDOMA #FBI and proudly so.
