Breaking News: Lionel Messi Sentenced To 21 Months In Prison After Being Found Guilty Of Tax Fraud

Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, Spanish media say.
His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.
They also face millions of euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay used to conceal earnings from image rights.
However, they are likely to avoid jail.
Under the Spanish system, prison terms under two years can be served under probation.
The footballer and his father were found guilty of three counts of tax fraud in Wednesday’s ruling by the court in Barcelona.

Crime / Selfishness!!! Woman Sells Unborn Baby For N100k(thousand) by kbaba77: 7:45pm On Jul 05, 2016
Selfishness!!! Woman Sells Unborn Baby For N100k(thousand)

The police in Lagos State have launched a
manhunt for a woman, Amaka Ogua, for
allegedly selling the unborn child of her
younger sister, Nkechi, for N100,000 in the
Mile 2 area of the state.
It was gathered that Amaka, who the
police accused of running a baby factory,
had already collected N50,000 from a
client for the unborn child.
PUNCH Metro learnt that a balance of
N50,000 was agreed to be paid when 31-
year-old Nkechi was delivered of the baby.
Our correspondent gathered that the
bubble burst on Friday, June 24, when the
police got a tip-off from a non-
governmental organisation – Child
Protection Network – that money had been
allegedly paid to Nkechi’s sister for the
unborn child.
Our correspondent learnt that the matter
was reported at the FESTAC Police
Division, which sent officers to rescue
Nkechi from the apartment on the same
day.
A CPN member, Toyin Oklagogo, who was
also at the police station, told PUNCH
Metro that Nkechi was impregnated by a
man brought home by her sister.
He said, “The woman was registered at a
private hospital in the Alaba area of Ojo.
But she stayed in a flat around 2nd
Rainbow, Mile 2. When the information got
to the CPN that she had become pregnant
and her unborn child had been sold, we
went to the house with another executive,
but Nkechi refused to follow us. We then
reported the case at the police station.
“The Divisional Police Officer at the
FESTAC Police Division asked his men to
rescue Nkechi the Friday we reported at
the station. We did not meet her sister at
home when we went to her house at the
Ojo Military Cantonment. She would have
been arrested immediately.
“Nkechi had a mental challenge some
years back. She said at the police station
that although she had memory loss, she
could remember that her sister brought a
man to impregnate her in the house. She
added that she was not in support of the
sale of her baby, but her sister had
collected money from a man.
“Nkechi also told us that she gave birth to
a baby two years ago, but her sister had
taken the child to an unknown person. So,
the police are investigating child trafficking
as well.”
A police source told our correspondent
that when Amaka’s husband was invited to
the station, he declined the invitation.
The source added that the husband
claimed it was a family issue and that the

police should steer clear of it.
The source said, “Nkechi is carrying an
eight-month -old pregnancy. So, she is
receiving care and we believe her safety is
a top priority. The police invited the
husband of the suspect, but he declined,
saying the police were meddling in a family
affair. But the victim already confessed
that money had been collected for her
unborn child.”
Our correspondent gathered that the
matter had also been reported at the
Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and
Poverty Alleviation, Ikeja, which took
custody of Nkechi.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations
Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the
incident, adding that the pregnant woman
had been rescued.
She said, “The sister of the pregnant
woman wanted to take advantage of her
sibling’s mental condition to sell her baby
when born. Investigations revealed that an
amount of money had been collected for
the purpose.
“Operatives from the FESTAC division are
still investigating the matter. Meanwhile,
the command has rescued the pregnant
woman and she is in safe custody.”

Politics / N4.9b Fraud : Fani Kayode And Others Get N250m Bail by kbaba77: 6:07am On Jul 05, 2016
N4.9B Fraud : FANI KAYODE and Others get N250M Bail

A Federal High Court in Lagos has granted
bail in the sum of N250m to a former
Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-
Kayode, who is being tried by the
Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission for an alleged fraud of
N4.9bn.
Justice Muslim Hassan granted the bail
with two sureties in like sum and ordered
Fani-Kayode to deposit his passport in the
custody of the court pending the outcome
of the case.
The sureties, the court said, must be
owners of landed properties within the
court’s jurisdiction.
They were also to present evidence of tax
clearance in the state.
Also admitted to bail in the same
conditions were a former Minister of State
for Finance, Nemandi Usman, and one
Danjuma Yusuf, who were standing trial
along with Fani-Kayode.
Joined as the 4th defendant in the charge
was a company, Joint Trust Dimension
Nigeria Limited.
The accused were on June 28, 2016
arraigned before Justice Hassan on 17
counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful
retention of proceeds of theft and money
laundering.
Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesperson
for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s
campaign organisation in the 2015 general
elections, was accused of conspiring with
the others to directly and indirectly retain
various sums which the EFCC claimed they
ought to have reasonably known were
proceeds of theft.
The accused persons were said to have
allegedly committed the offences between
January 8, 2015 and March 25, 2015 in the
build-up to the general elections.
In one of the counts, the EFCC alleged
that Fani-Kayode, who it listed as the 2nd
defendant in the charge sheet, and his co-
defendants conspired among themselves
to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500,
000,000.00, which sum you reasonably
ought to have known formed part of the
proceeds of an unlawful act to wit:
stealing.”
The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo,
had told the court that the said conspiracy
and indirect retention of the N1.5bn
constituted an offence under Section 18(a)
of the Money Laundering (Prohibition)
(Amendment) Act, 2012, punishable under
Section 15(3)( 4) of the same Act.
In another count, the EFCC alleged that
Fani-Kayode “directly retained the sum of
N350m,” which the anti-graft agency
claimed that he ought to have “reasonably
known formed part of proceeds of an
unlawful act to wit: stealing.”
Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using
parts of the money at various times,
including between March 20 and 25, 2015,
when he allegedly used N250,650,000.00
out of the money.
Fani-Kayode was also accused of making a
cash transaction of N24m with one
Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on
February 12, 2015 “to Paste Poster Co of
125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.”
The duo were said to have made the
transaction without going through any
financial institution, an act the EFCC
claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and
16(d) of the Money Laundering
(Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and
punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the
same Act.
But the four defendants pleaded not guilty
to the charges.
The EFCC has, however, listed 17
witnesses it intends to call during trial to
substantiate its allegations.
Justice Hassan adjourned till

October 19,
2016 for the prosecution to open its case
