Universities from NUC =103 http://www.nuc.edu.ng/pages/universities.asp?ty=1&order=inst_name Thought we were talking about universities not seminaries/bible schools Also read http://www.independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=28797 Reread my points |

10cirenoh: I mentioned, less or about 50 and someone pointed the numbers to be wrong and I have admitted but still it is less than 100. My point is not about number of Universities, it is about our population and the fact that the universities are not enough. Every university federal or state gives preferential treatment based on a quota system to citizens of their states to encourage more folks to go to school. Some people take JAMB get high scores but could still not be get admitted based on this system if he/she is not a native. That peeps are fighting is not a GEJ problem, it just shows it is an opportunity for their communities at least they are not rejecting it. Again GEJ is a President, its not about him hence if he lives, the next guy will still go with this at least we have a National Planning Commission and a Ministry of Education which I believe have the numbers to back this move. Eection move or not, I don't care, I just need young kids to go to school. Am not even a GEJ fan, and rightly there are other problems . I have looked at the numbers and it is my belief that we need more schools, and then sit down to talk about the institutional problems affecting our education. |

Akainzo: Like I mentioned before you have a right to be skeptical First off, there is no Nigerian University that was built ready-made for service, most started either in an old secondary school or with 1 or 2 buildings. So the building is the easy part. Secondly, who admits the students and when do you do that? The school will run a research to know what faculties to start with. Not every course will be there on the same day. The accreditation you mention makes me laugh because you can't have it before having students in place and showing a profile of your professors. My experience, I have been part of 2 new schools both secondary and private university in Nigeria and all started at least 2-3 years before taking their first students. Akainzo: Not if the CEO is Steve Jobs, a strategy guy, not every CEO knows the product so yes you would have to hire a person who can actually bring your ideas to life, take your land agreement to a venture capitalist and see if they will invest in your idea. You don't even name yourself CEO if you don't know your product. Title of Who does what is not even the issue, you need someone to do the leg work. In this case a VC. |

Good job guys, I love Dimgba Igwes article, it should have a thread of its own |
![]() |
fstranger3: So your list is credible, thank you. My point is, based on the population the number of universities are too small and every state deserves a Federal university. Just my opinion. |
![]() |
10cirenoh: Source of data: Euromonitor. (no links cos it is paid for) Again there are about less or about 50 universities in this country of 100 million people. Simply inadequate. The USA has about 4000 universities/colleges, not all are at the same level. So what we can do is to create a grading system for our schools to make them more effective. I undersatnd quality vs quantity problem but we have to build more. Not everyone is meant for college but every state deserves a university, it is the least we can do. So far Private universities have not shown the encouraging signs that they can do better hence OAU, Kwara are still at the top. There are too many problems with our educational system and you can create a seperate thread for that but this plan is for the better. Not every one needs college but the ones that want to, must be provided that opportunity. |

@Kobo My answers are laid out in my previous posts With the way things are, it all comes back to networks and associations. We need peeps like you to run Non-profits/association for kidney patients. If there are indeed thousands, thats a major number that can sway government policy and make things happen. Hopefully the kidney center would be up and running soon. |
![]() |
^^^^It is easy and good to critic, and no blames especially for a govt like Nigeria but leave sentiments and look at the numbers I posted this earlier+others By 2015, people under 20 years-old will account for 52% of the population in Nigeria, depending on the census data you have that is about 60 million young folks. We need to absorb them. The existing universities + private cannot handle a third of that number. Where do you want them to go to? Issue of quality vs quantity is not just about a money problem, it is an instituional problem. And we need to fix that. Again not a GEJ fan but this is a good planning if implemented. |

@Kobo In every budget, there is room for miscellanous expenses. Not just a Nigerian thing. I am not a Lagosian so I don't have the one for the year but that is standard practice. Its the same place governments gets money to host dinners for Super Falcons after a victory, no one sees future victories but if it happens we will celebrate. ![]() By the way, it is an assumption that this are state funds, and I don't mind if it is. We can't be sure how much it is. People don't get sick and say "hey who be the maga to sponsor my kidney? No, this guy has spent all his savings, before going to AGN and then the government. Again, Fash did not run on "I will send you abroad if you are sick" mandate. No. Truth is there are special cases, not based on the person but on seriousness of an illness. Don't underestimate the power of networks. Either the local village women association or a professional one. People join networks to get benefits professionally and otherwise, if your network raises awareness enough someone in govt will see and help. It is what Aisha was explaining with her work. Thats why every sickness in the world has an association. How do peeps access the funds? Join networks that add value, it makes it easier for you to be seen. I have watched Newsline programs where sick peeps are shown and by next week a state government helps them. This things happen every day. In life, things are not always black or white because of uncertainties, we need to do what we can while we aspire to be better by building better hospitals. The link I posted earlier, I hope someone higher sees it and when that happens I will post it here. |

Akainzo: So you would prefer the VP appointed the same day the building is completed? Or resume the same day the students come in? Is the running of a university all about buildings, who appoints the lecturers or sets up the day to day admin running of the school? Plus there is nothing bad if he is part of the design of the school. Not a GEJ fan but he got this one right. Funny peeps! |

Kobojunkie: And my argument is, the state has a budget for goodwill and should help people if need be especially in a serious cases as this one. It is wrong to say they are selective because Fashola or any governor has helped other people (few of them reported on NP, TV)in the past and still do but they are not celebs so the papers don't report them as much. Blame the press not Fash. We are Africans, we are community people, this guy is part of the AGN and apparently they have tried their best and needed more to help their colleague and so ask the government. In 2009 we lost Best Ogedengbe cos money came too late, that was a celeb if you are a soccer fan. So I disagree with the pref treatment arguement. Its not like Fashola took money meant for Idi Araba High school computers to help someone. This are miscellaneous/goodwill expenses accounted for in the budget. It is even more commendable that this guy is not a core Lagosian but he was helped, building unity and patriotism. I guess the lesson is if you will need help someday, join a community/group today, where your strenghts fail they will speak for you. Thats why we have Associations of anything and everyything ![]() |
![]() |
jumobi1: What is there not to justify? That the governor should not help because of other sick peeps? Many people are sick everyday, most celebs (past sport heros, tv heros etc) have died in the past without any help. Fact is, the government of Fashola or any other helps ordinary sick people all the time.It just doesn't get on the papers. If you get on TV, Newspapers or through your church, someone will see you and help. . If our late president can be sent to Saudi for treatment on state funds even if he signed that he is "very" fit to run, then why can't another person be helped? It is a goodwill expense. BTW Here is a sick lady here, she is not a celeb, she needs help. http://lindaikeji..com/2011/02/acid-girl.html |
![]() |
Folks should chill, everyday there is a news on TV about a person needing emergency treatment and the state whether Lagos or any other helps out. The celeb did not get preferential treatment from Lagos State, it is the press that refused to report the same gesture for non-celebs. At the end he is not even RMD so I don't see the whole noise for this "special treatment" issue. I hear Lagos is building a hospital, maybe they have a plan after all but until then lives need to be saved. |

@Kobo are you on Twitter? There are some folks to follow on Twitter who are into this advocacy stuff especially for those abroad. The way things work is you will know who knows someone that know what to do ![]() Just one way to reach out to them |

Thought I should share this Mike Emenalo interview with Chelsea fans ![]() http://www.completesportsnigeria.com/news/2011/02/mike-emenalo Ancelotti was furious over your appointment as his assistant, saying that he was not properly consulted before your appointment was ratified. It must have been difficult for you though, getting along with him at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground. I think he was stunned by my appointment because even a layman will notice this during match days when he consults the goalkeepers’ Trainer instead of me his assistant as it is done in other clubs, but I strongly believe one day he will see that ability does not reside in the colour of the skin. I know that he was not expecting my appointment at that time even though he felt bad that Ray’s contract was not extended by Roman, but that does not mean I shouldn’t be consulted during matches. What I try to do is to keep working for the success of the club. I strongly believe we will end up as best of friends and that it is just a matter of time. So far, our relationship has been okay and I still believe he will benefit from my experience, since nobody is an island of knowledge. I feel great now that things keep getting better between us as Chelsea continue to bounce back in the EPL. |

Folks have a reason to be skeptical about any Nigerian government move, not because it is cool to do so but more of there are antecedents of mismanagement. However, I support the FG on this move simply because the of a few reasons 1. By 2015, people under 20 years-old will account for 52% of the population in Nigeria, two things, a very young population and an ageing one. Depending on the census data you have that is about 60 million young folks. We need to absorb them. The existing universities + private cannot handle a third of that number. 2. I believe education can help with reducing killings either religious or political violence, we can reduce barbaric killings if more peeps are educated 3. I understand Quality vs Quantity arguments, there is an institutional problem that even if we invested all the money in the schools, it won't solve much until we address those problems. This is where credible Non-Profits can come in and become the conscience of our universities, we can have a grading system for all the universities. It will impact school admins and make them more responsible. 4. The biggest problem we have in this country is we don't like to build small, instead of University of Federal everything, why not have specialized schools. For popular courses like Social sciences, Law etc. It saves costs for government and private. It is the reason why most private universities will struggle for a long time cos they are jack of all trades. A good example is the LBS In all this, FG has made a good move but it doesn't end here, we need to do more but its a start. |

By Duke Igwillo The history of Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation would not be complete without the mention of Dr Alex Ekwueme. The seasoned architect and multidisciplinary degree holder was founder and chairman of the Institute of Civil Society, an organisation that midwifed the emergence of the G34. The history of G34 and the formation of the ruling party (PDP) in Nigeria (the Peoples Democratic Party) are all well known. So much has been said about Ekwueme and the issue of rotational presidency in Nigeria. For the avoidance of doubt, it was Ekwueme’s minority report recommendation at the 1994/1995 National Constitutional Conference that led to the emergence of the now widely accepted six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. During the Abacha regime, it was also Ekwueme’s initiative that led to the 1994/95 conference recommendation that the presidency should have a single tenure of 5 years rotating amongst the six geopolitical zones for an initial period of 30 years, during which time all the zones would have had a shot at the presidency. After this initial 30 year period of national formation, the popular democratic ideals should have been instilled in Nigerians to ensure understanding of the need for the best candidate irrespective of geopolitical zone, to emerge as president. This 1995 Constitution did not see the light of day as the General Abdulsalam Abubakar government revised the 1979 Constitution and handed it over to Olusegun Obasanjo as the 1999 Constitution. In the first term of Obasanjo’s presidency, Ekwueme again suggested a single term model in order to kickstart the initial democratic transition era which would last for 24 years rotating among the six zones. But alas Obasanjo wanted a second term very badly and gleefully accepted that his two terms (eight years) should be followed by eight years of a northern presidency. Hence in 2003, Ekwueme proposed to have an Ekwueme / Atiku ticket in which he would steer the ship of state for about 3 years and resign on his 74th birthday in October 2006 to pave the way for Atiku to contest the next election in 2007 as an incumbent with a South-South vice presidential candidate. In the same spirit, Atiku would resign his position after about 3 years to give the South-South vice presidential candidate the opportunity of standing for election as an incumbent president. This Ekwueme believed would go round the six geopolitical zones after which election to all positions would be on the basis of the best presidential candidate, that is, strictly on merit. I have taken the liberty of narrating the above historical facts due to the recent distortion of Ekwueme’s view by some politicians who want to score cheap political points by tainting his image. Ekwueme is a true nationalist who once stated: “I have always dreamed of achieving a Nigeria in which every ethnic nationality melts into one nation rather than “a mere geographical expression”. Indeed, I wanted to make Nigeria truly a nation, instead of a mere country where each ethnic group would be fighting for its sole benefit”. Did Ekwueme support Jonathan’s candidacy? The simple answer to this question is yes. Ekwueme stated in the early days of the debate about Jonathan’s candidacy that it would be preposterous for a sitting president who is qualified for election not to stand for the election. By this statement Ekwueme actually encouraged Jonathan to stand in the PDP presidential primaries. That said, Ekwueme’s position on rotation as a panacea for national integration remains unchanged. In his original zoning arrangement as proposed and promoted, there was no provision for the death of a sitting president. This means that the death of Umaru Yar’Adua in office required readjustment of the rotation timetable. In the build-up to the party primaries, there were suggestions that Ekwueme was supporting Atiku because some of his associates were working for Atiku. The truth is that Atiku’s candidature in the primaries was a clear indication of the maturity of the Nigerian political class and Atiku should be commended, as he made the presidential primaries of the PDP not only credible but also competitive. Dr Ekwueme had only one vote as a delegate and to all intents and purposes he could have voted for either Atiku or Jonathan. As elder statesman and founder of the PDP, he does not owe any apology to any person or group for his personal preference for any of the candidates. However his commitment to the principle of integration in Nigeria based on compromise, accommodation and tolerance should not be forgotten. I would end this piece with his statement: “I will like to revel in our diversity, respect it, celebrate it and enjoy it. To revel in it we must believe that our common humanity is more important than the things which make us different”. Thank God Ekwueme is not one of the so-called ‘free style’ politicians who can do anything to remain relevant in Nigerian politics. He believes in something and actually put his life at risk for those things he believes in. Even if he is misunderstood today, at least he stands for something. Duke Igwilo is the Director-General of the Alex Ekwueme Foundation. |

ROSSIKE: They shouldn't announce it because its not an achievement. Make it happen, its what governements do. Will it translate to low prices to the end users? Was the NNPC not incharge of it before it collapsed? Let people make the connections themselves that to me is more powerful than any announcements. |

dayokanu: If a coaches job is really to win trophies, then why was Mouriho fired? He gave Chelsea FC trophies and was the best prospect for CC. And why does Stoke Tony Pulis still have a job? Truth is, it is all about money. I know you like to taunt Arsenal fans, but again with the amount we have spent to gain new players (which is lesser than Liverpool and Spurs) Wenger deserves some credit. Up until 2005, Man United was the best run club in England and you can see that in their performance and Sir Alex is a great manager but the problem is in the future, this is why United "real" fans are against the Glazer family. In that time Arsenal has covered the gap between both clubs financially even though you have a bigger stadium and brand, but we are catching up. Don't get me wrong, I love trophies and the bragging rights that come with them but we can only assess AW for the next 20 years to see if indeed he succeeded. Here is a quote from the visionary AW that sums up his mind in January 2010 ''What is important is that the club is in good hands, whether they are mine or someone else's. Whether I personally leave on a positive or negative note is a little bit less important." |

Really sad, I think he is a good manager with huge potentials. At the end it is all about the money so I guess the board is afraid but thats just sad |

^^^Actually 61.2 million in severance pay, yep Ranieri, Mourinho, Grant, Scolari and there back room staff. Its in your financial statements. With the UEFA financial fair play, clubs are looking at reducing costs. Just removing Drogba and Lampard from your books will take off 13 million plus bonuses. Also Anelka, Malouda etc. With there ages, its good to cut costs and save the club from any embarrassment. Issue is Roman will not go back to spend like before and remember you are not a self sustaining club. But focusing on the CC this season will earn you some good money, while you try to finish top four. |

Jen33: Everything should be based on context, even with the concessions, are all Asian countries successful? No. Do you know how much aid that has be channeled to Africa? Considering our size what has being achieved? Every country or leader must have a vision plan that goes beyond his tenure. For example, in this country students keep failing exams, no one has come to say "Our vision and goal in 2020 is to reduce the rate to 10% and make Nigeria a major destination of IT development". All backed up with a plan of action. A sad example is the Malaysia palm oil story, today they are 2nd in the world, and they got seeds to start from Nigeria. Nobody is doubting our achievements in the past 50 years but it is good we learn from others to be better |
![]() |
IMPLICATIONS ![]() Chelsea should focus on the Champions league this year cos the financial implications for the future are not looking good. You can't fire your coach since you have spent about 60 million pounds in the past 5 years on firing compensation. A massive clear out of the oldies is imminent in the summer to reduce the wage bill. In all I say good luck, austerity measures have come to the bridge. |

^^^^Nice video ![]() An example of visionary leadership at work here even though the means (colonialism) were unethical by todays standards. This guy Sir George Taubman Goldie did wonders in Nigeria when he came in 1877. Remember Mr Biggs of today and its parent company UAC, yeah thats right this guy started it and at some point stiffled local business men in other to run British monopoly. Today, Mr Biggs, UBA, Unilever etc are still top companies in this country eve after indigenization policy, my point is without vision a person/country cannot achieve much it doesn't matter how much school or resources we have, this guys showed it and are still reaping the fruits today. Again, Nigeria can complain about lack of military strength or whatever but remember in our very own eyes China is recolonizing Africa with small and large businesses. Lets start with West Africa. |

@1025 Well lets put it this way, if I have to invest in a club for retirement earnings, that club would be Arsenal FC. If my son has a dream to become a professional footballer, the club I would most likely suggest is Arsenal FC. I call him special not because of trophies but because he decided to follow the vision of the club fully and sometimes at his own detriment, you can't argue that he can't win trophies because he has done those in the past but at some point he felt he could provide more to the game and the club. Remember, unlike Chelsea or Man City, there are no sole benefactors at Arsenal, hence the decision to move to Emirates was purely for the club to compete at the top level for many years to come and that was made by shareholders. Wenger is a manager, the modern day manager must be ready to follow the owners manual, to claim that he is a jack of all trade is totally wrong. Cos even Sir Alex has a say in scouting, who comes or who goes and if Old Trafford has to move to a new location they would ask his inputs, it is what managers do. The UEFA Financial Fairplay 2014, Arsenal is qualified already while others are struggling to balance their books. Thanks to Wengers vision and eye for talent. The original poster of this thread gave player figures, compare that to Chelsea FC for example. With the money invested in Chelsea, I find it funny that one can complain about Arsene Wenger. I expect them to have won CC by now but their records are the same with Arsenal in the past 5 years, runners up and semi finalists. Problem is Roman is no longer going to splash cash like before and with their loss today its hard to think they can make CC spot next season. Manchester and Arsenal are guaranteed 2 spots, the other 2 will be for City, Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea. Not looking good for all the money spent. Truth is CC is money from earnings of 25-49 million from 1st round to Finals and a top club has to be there, that is what Wenger has done in the lean years at Arsenal. It is also incorrect to say we pay our players peanuts, Arsenal is fourth in the league with paying players. Chelsea or Man City cannot get players cheap like Arsenal because of their history in the market. They are the "magas" of football market. I respect Maurihno, he is a great coach but he doesn't fit with Arsenals Business model and so can't be hired at anytime but he has achieved much and I respect him. Yesterday was a disaster for the team, it was a bad day at the office, hopefully they will pick up next game. There is no way clubs can stop buying from Arsenal because we put in the work to produce them. Even at that, income from player sales are substantially low. It is what we use to run our vast scout network. If you need a failed example, think Ajax FC, they led the way but lost there track now they are getting back to youth system. In all, I look at numbers and from what I have seen, this guy is a legend, its not about him because the foundations he has laid can only be fruitful in the future. That includes growth, branding, football style and business. |

I made my arguments on the Ohanaeze endorses GEJ thread, few months ago. That was even before the primaries. Endorsing GEJ that early means all Igbos are PDP which is not true. Its sad things are the way they are but again the unnamed Ohanaeze guy should keep quiet and stop all this nonsense. On the bright side, its not like he picked Flavor flav to run with him, so why the noise |

Thought I should paste for Buhari since your internet bandwidth no reach Mitary Training: Buhari does not fit in to the profile you wrote. In case you don't know Buhari graduated as a military officer (lieutenant) in Aldeshot UK. He went to the US National War College Carlisle in Pennsylvania from 1980 -1981. That is where the most respected officers of the US army such as Collin Powell attended to become generals. He was at the Defense College of India as well. By all military standards, his training is superb and the best any general can get in the world. Buhari was not some idle sitting General on baboon tree as you stated in your write up when he was in the army. In 1982-1983 when Chad took over our land with more than 19 villages like what the Cameroonians did with the support of France in the case of Bakassi, he then Brigadier Buhari led a successful operation as the GOC to push back Chad and reclaim our territory. If it was Buhari, there is no way as President, he will hand over Bakassi to Cameroon, that is true patriotism. I am not Buhari's relative and I have never met him in my life. But I have taken the pain to know a lot about him by reading facts because I believe among all the possible candidates vying for the Presidency now that may end up ruling Nigeria, he is the best qualified. Someone challenged me on the comments section of Sahara Reporters that I must compare General David Petreaus (The General Commanding Central Command in the Middle East of the US Forces) and Buhari; that is a tall order. They did not serve in the same army but still you have to give it to Buhari. Buhari as Lieutenant after graduating from the UK royal army fought in the Congo in 1964-65 as part of the first mission forces to stabilize the country during it first civil war and won the Congo Medal. He is comparable to Petreaus of US in terms of war command and strategy training. Petreaus Attended the US War College, Pennsylvania to become a General, Buhari went to the same college from 1980-1981 to be General even though Petreaus did, Buhari is his senior even by the US army rankings. Buhari fought a dangerous battle in Congo as a Lieutenant and won the Congo medal, Petreaus did not. Buhari fought in the Biafra civil war as a captain; Petreaus has not fought in a civil war. Buhari commanded an army division to defend his country against Chad, Petreaus commanded an army division to destroy a country Iraq. Now anyone who wants to can compare them. |
