I guess I should give an update on my journey to encourage someone. I am not a regular contributor and I really don't talk much so most people wouldn't know my story. But seeing that I got some help following this page I have decided to share a few lines on my journey so far. Please manage it as it might not be very coherent.

It has been a long and deliberate journey that started in 2016.

So when my mates were processing in 2016, I was at a disadvantage because i did not have a master's degree. So the first step was to enrol for a Master's programme in Unilag. It had to be part time so I had to wait for 2 years to earn same. Following the trend of scores in 2017 I had envisaged that scores might not be as low as they were then so I started looking for options to make sure I have high enough scores by the time I was done with my Masters programme. So I decided learning french was the route but combining this with a masters programme was going to be tough. So I couldn't immediately start learning french. I eventually started learning french in March 2018.

Let me fast forward here. So I got my ECA done through ICES (took 7 months- 3 months delay from Unilag and ICES took 4 months), wrote IELTS in July 2019 and got LSRW: 8,7.5,7.5,7 (single attempt). Wrote TEF in October 2019 and got LSRW- C1,B1,C1,B2. My CRS score was 403 and i was already planning to rewrite TEF when New Brunswick organized the Information Session in February. Luckily my NOC was listed so I was able to apply and got invited to attend the session. But more importantly, the fact I could speak french coupled with a TEF result played a huge factor in being invited

I eventually got a nomination from New Brunswick early this month and then Federal ITA on Wednesday. The journey is not completed yet but a lot of progress has been made.

I hope someone finds this encouraging and continues to push. Things might not all work out as you are thinking in your head, but hang in there and keep pushing. It will end in praise.

Hello guys, I just entered the express entry pool with CRS of 436, I don’t have masters I’m currrently searching for where I can enroll for a fast 1 year masters whether it is online from a foreign school. Can afford to spend like $5000 to $7000 at most. If you have any suggestions for school whether here and abroad please let me know. I’m also looking at writing TEF to increase my score. The alliance francaise here is closed because of covid so I’m learning with duo lingo please any helpful resources for learning will be appreciated. I was just laid off from my job because of this pandemic so right now this is my focus.

Hey Sorry. I haven't been here in months. I went to Lome. The Benin guys were not responsive, they never responded to my emails...and havent still replied them.

If you have the time, it is good to do a bit of immersion when learning a language but i also think there are quite a lot of resources online and people you can ask to give you 15mins of their time on a daily basis to have conversation.

All the best.

Sorry I'm just seeing this.

First of, you have to pay cash at the institute to register. I didn't have to pay for accommodation and all that cos I stayed with a friend.

They had preparatory classes I attended but it's nothing really intensive. But you can always pay extra if you want.

Grimmm:

Hi Kennyyo,

Please can you help with information on logistics such as Accommodation, location and cost. Preparatory classes. Did you take classes while you were in Lome? Did you register for the exam when you got there or before? I'd be glad for the information.

Thank you.

Thanks so very kindly for the encouragement.

I'll check out the post as suggested. Yeah I will attend classes and also look for conversation partners.

Thanks

Mamaroon:

I totally agree that you did well, as it was a 1st attempt and you started from scratch. I also think you can be ready in 3 months.

For EE, I believe that Ayboye's dialectic style will do the trick, also see the post on tips.

For EO, it's practice I guess. WIll it be possible to attend classes so you are forced to make conversation or get a tutor and focus only on conversing with them.

Refresh, Refine, Refire....almost there....we are rooting for you.

So I received my results on Monday. I have been discouraged to share. But then here it is:

CE: 240/200- C1
CO: 263/360- B2
EE: 239/450- B1
EO: 212/450- B1

While it is not what I wanted, I believe I did well given that I started from zero level in April of 2018 and that it was my first attempt.

I was worried with the writing all along cos i didn't flow well but i feel more disappointed with the speaking. My plan is to use the next three months to focus on improving these two areas and then give it another try.

Kennyyo:
TEF passe à Lomé samedi le 26 octobre, 2019.

CO: Benin, aide scolaire
CE: biere verte, patheons Haiti, un nouveau logiciel, les chauffeurs, and others.
EO: A. Call Train company to get information on their packages
B: Convince a friend to become a product tester.
EE. A. A 96yr old woman unfortunately had to sell her house.
B. Travels and holidays are worth more than certificates

Overall it was a nice experience. Had to drop the idea of TCF because the changed their dates.

For those who are already in B1/B2, just get on that Facebook page and get the link to those 85 past questions. I doubt there was any questions from both the CO and CE that I hadn't seen before. Although I didn't revise like 2 of the long texts and one of the long recordings for CO, but I had treated virtually every single question.

For the EO, practice speaking. It's not as difficult. The examiners were helpful with giving me confidence. Just keep practicing and don't stress too much.

I was thrown off balance by the EE. I struggled a bit. It's the only place I have a bit of fear. Though I try to ensure my grammar was correct but I didn't flow well.

Hopefully I can come back and share good news I'm another 4-6weeks.

Best of luck to us all.

Finally registered for TEF after shifting the dates like 3 times from April to July to September. I was going to even shift to November cos I always felt I'm not ready. I'm off to Lome on Monday for two weeks before the exams on 26th. I should write TCF to in between.

Wish me luck on my adventure. Thanks everyone.

The first tip is that a lot depends on the personal effort you're willing to put into it. You have to be obsessed with learning.
2. From my experience, I'll recommend group learning. There's a lot more you can learn from others. It exposes you to vocabulary and thinking of more than two people.

3. As for books, I'm taking classes at Alliance Française de Lagos, those texts actually contains a lot of what you need for the exams. But more importantly, there's nothing you won't find online. Google is loaded.

4. YouTube is also a partner you need. There's a lot of materials for you there. Na data e go chop.

5. Start listening to RFI. Français Facile at 8/9pm. It's recorded too so you can always listen to them anytime.

6. Talk to yourself in French if you don't have people around you to converse with. Just make sure you have conversations.

7. It's not easy. You will get tired and lose energy. Sometimes it will appear you're not making progress. Other times you'll be so excited that you'd think you are already bilingual. Those things are normal but review your progress every quarter.

I hope you'd find these tips useful.

Two reasons. Exams fees are cheaper. 2. More importantly, I need a type immersion. Something to boost my confidence and get all French before the exams.

Not necessarily. I hadn't done anything French since primary 5 which is some 30years ago. Started classes last year April. Writing TEF this month. You have to be patient and realistic with your expectations. 3 months is really unrealistic even if it's all you do. But my advice is to get started still.

Update: "No. We are no more organising it.
That is what my director told me last week"
That's from the guy. So those who want to do TCF might have to look elsewhere.
Kennyyo:
They said to start in September/October but we're still waiting for approval from CIEP as at the last time enquired. I'll ask for an update this weekend or even chat up the guy who handles the TEF prep classes.

You presented my experience and opinion on the two tests perfectly. You're very much on point with your view and I will advise same to others. Like you said, I find the CO of TCF more tricky. Infact, I found the understanding the question after the main audio more difficult than the Audio itself.

Scard:
Bonsoir a tous et a toutes,

First and foremost all the best in you exams @Bellerin, I believe even the TEF markers will know that someone took their exams from Nigeria on the day. Also best wishes to all the "silent" readers here as you silently take your exams.

On this TEF vs TCF matter, make me sef add my own 2 million Canadian Dollars on top.

I believe overall, it is easier to attain your goal with the TCF than with the TEF. I have written the TEF (awaiting results), and I am revising for TCF (just incase). My reason is simple and will be explained thus:

1. As prof Mamaroon as already explain, you need just 50% pass mark to attain B2 in speaking and writing. We all know that EE is a major stress point for TEF takers, infact I couldn't attempt the TEF for a long time because of my fear for the EE. But then, even if they both required 70% pass mark, I would have still gone for the TCF EE, rather than that of TEF as the questions come in 3 parts and 4 essays in what I would call bite sizes. Your mistakes will be fewer if you have to write in shorter forms than the long argumentative essay you meet in part B of TEF. Also, the speaking come in 3 bite sizes of which the part 1 (se presenter) and part 2 (ask questions like part 1 in TEF) already puts you on the way to success.

2. The CE of TCF is much simpler, shorter and more straight-forward even at the C2 level than those of TEF. You don't need to have seen the questions previously to be able to answer.

3. The CO of TCF is rather tricky (my fear), however, in practice, i realise I tend to score better in B1, B2 and C1 than in the A1 and 2, well overall it is still tricky.

WHAT WORKS FOR TEF
1. It used to be much more popular than TCF so there is a lot of revision materials and their solutions available

2. They repeat questions A LOT, so if you are lucky to encounter a repeated question, then you are good. My CO was completely new as I had neever heard the questions before.

3. Out of 60 listening questions, you will find a lot more easier questions to answer than the 39 of TCF

My Submission

If you have written TEF more than worse, it is difficult to "change" to TCF because of the major reasons I gave, but if you have never written any of the exams, I would advice you to go for the TCF. Once you have learnt the language enough to write the exams, focus on the understanding the CO pattern, once you do, you are good to go.

All the best a tous et a toutes, for if there is one major thing we will all gain apart from a minimum of 42 points, is the ability to speak a second foreign language, and it is something I can't trade away.

Do you plan to write both? Not a bad strategy. All the best!

Yes, both. To give myself options plus the TEF price in AF Lagos can almost pay for both in Lome.
