TimFisher2:
What I learnt from your write-up

Avoid Nigerian gigs at all costs. Foreign gigs won't treat you like this, as long you know your onions.

We Nigerians actively seek the slightest opportunities to rubbish our country and everything Nigerian.

If you say this, it means you do not apply to writer roles from foreign hirers—especially the US. It’s common to apply to a “fully-remote” role, only to receive the heart-breaking “sorry….US-resident writers only” response.

My point— this has nothing to do with avoiding ‘Nigerian gigs’. It’s nothing related to knowing ‘onions’ too. For whatever reasons, some hirers prefer people around

TimFisher2:

Secondly, don't be accessible to people, limit yourself and be professional. As soon as you guys migrated from mail to WhatsApp, WhatsApp to seeing in person, I know you have lost it.

If you had maintained the first line of communication which was email, I don't think it would have reached this level.

Each hirer has its preferred channel(s) of communicating with teammates. It has nothing to do with the OP’s professionalism—or lack of it.

E.g, You can’t insist on maintaining email communication when the team communicates primarily via video meetings on Zoom, WhatsApp Video, and whatnot

TimFisher2:

She must have been secretly viewing your WhatsApp status from time to time and must have seen things that might have rescinded her decision to stick to you.

Lol. You don analyze the matter enter another level. Baba rest, this assumption no follow.

The interviewer/hirer’s reason was clear enough— They wanted a Lagos-based ’remote’ writer

TimFisher2:

Sorry for your loss. The next gig will be massive.
Amen. Na only these two short sentences make better sense for everything you type…. You for just type only these two rest. Lol. Na joke bros

Back to topic:

For me, these hirers should state the job description and requirements explicitly in their ads. That’ll save everyone the stress of sending samples and unnecessary screenings.

If an ads say “remote,” then you have no business with my location.

If, for whatever reason, you want to de see me once once, then ‘Hybrid’ is a word.

OP, better gigs de come jor

theadeola:

You just reinforced my point that you know nothing about the writing industry and talent in Nigeria.

Thank you sir. I tried to ignore, but I couldn’t. And today, I de very less busy. Yes, boss. I know nothing. Lol

theadeola:

As far as writing and freelancing in general is concerned, many Nigerian writers are crap. I offered them N3, N5, N7 per word, I still got crap work back. What do you say for that?

Who did you offer?

theadeola:

I wasted money thinking the more I paid them, the better they'll get. They just took the money and still delivered shit work.

That’s still your fault. Bad inexperienced writers do not automatically become good because you tripled the rates.

theadeola:

So now I don't pay you that high. I pay a bit, train you for free and when I can trust you, I increase your pay.

Better. But your ads should not be targeted at ‘experienced’ ‘seasoned,’ ‘with Bleep years experience’ and all the high bars you guys set, only to end the ads with a N2/word tag.

theadeola:

As for hiring on Upwork, been there, done that. When you get paid N10 per word for a job, pay someone else N8 per word because you want a premium job.

I think here is the genesis of the problem.. You go on a dollar-based platform like Upwork scouting for N10/word gigs.

My friend, that’s $6 for 1000 words. Sh*t

That’s not even the problem if you jejely do it on your own and earn the whole. No, You take up the tasks then come on Nairaland finding “experienced slaves writers” among your countrymen to handle the tasks. After all, hungry jobless people full your country.

It becomes unprofitable to outsource same jobs at a decent rate, yet you de find Agba writer with Bleep years training and certifications to deliver flawless ready-to-deliver gigs.

theadeola:

And it's not even like the foreigners you seem to hold in high esteem don't compete for jobs with low pay, even on Upwork or Fiverr. The message is simple; get good, or get low pay. And this works anywhere in the world.

So, oga, you expect someone that has ‘gotten good’ like their international counterpart to do a N3 per word gig?

You keep contradicting yourself. I repeat, Do not expect industry-grade quality from people competing for low pay jobs ( wether here or abroad) and don’t make it a Nigerian-only thing. Of course, developing zones like Nigeria, India, etc are Chief culprits and for obvious reasons, but it’s a general rule

theadeola:

Yes, you get what you pay for, but also yes, sometimes you don't, especially with Nigerians.

I am Nigerian. I’ve been on this platform for years. I’ve bided for and accepted gigs from hirers here a few times.

I have never had a bad review.

But you can’t come asking for a well researched, SE-Optimized, premium-grammarly-vetted, CopyScape-checked, well-structured, AP-Styled, zero-AI writing gig for N5 per word. You nor know watin you de find nao.

For example, I have a nairalander still contact me after he first reached out since 2018. He still outsource his gigs when I’m less occupied and money no de hand.

But what does he pay? Sometimes, over #20 per word. To date, I’m the first person he contacts when he has writing gigs.

Funnily, I always ask him to preview before delivery; at least, for that third-eye perspective. But he always laughs it off. He doesn’t open my work; he sends to his client straight up—Always. And he doesn’t even need to understand the job requirement, he sends the order instructions to me straight up, too.

No, I no be Nigerian. I be Jamaican.

theadeola:

Haven't you gone to "exquisite" restaurants only to be treated shabbily and served crap food?

If you go restaurant without firsthand customer testimonials, any rubbish you chop, na you sabi na.

My point: Your recruitment process should go beyond polished cover letters and CVs.

Ask for samples that reflects the writing style you seek. Further, request PAID tests. If the key elements in the samples and paid test are consistent, then nobody tells you that’s a good writer. If you wish to push it further, ask to hop on a call with the prospect.

These are common global standards.

But no. You guys won’t do that ‘cause your budget doesn’t even meet the standard you desire.

theadeola:

Pls let's not defend the indefensible.

I’m not defending anyone. I’m a writer. So, I shouldn’t keep mum when ‘Nairaland writers’ are dragged.

Besides, there’s no such thing as ‘Nairaland Writers’. Some people you see read on this faceless forum have some of the top-rated writing services on Upwork and co. Or, those wans no join your ‘Nairaland writers’ category? So, anybody wey send you a “Re: I am a writer” application email, you don quick quick qualify them as ‘Nairaland writer’, ba?

If you don't like my offers do you think others won't or don't take it?

Sorry, they do.

Keep your stupid advice to yourself, I don't need it. If I had more I'd have paid more. Right now, this is what I can pay and it's only for those who would take it.

I don't force anyone to take my low paying offers. So, get lost with your stupidity.

It would pay you to mind your business!

Na wickedness and ignorance wan finish your life so.

Others are taking your offer. The same “30 idiots” you deleted for submitting crap?

If people are gladly taking it, why are you disturbing the world with your tears? E clear now say you no get sense, abi?

Man, you need mental checkup.

I’ve seen many of such offers and passed. It’s actually not my business how you run your business.

But your attitude is the chief concern. And you can’t put up that nonsense you called a job ad on public space and don’t expect reactions.

A m*d man who displays his unclothedness in public should expect reactions. He’ll be very very very m*d, like you, to say “everybody mind your business”. No, your gutter behavior is my business bro.

Otherwise, get your a** off social media space or stop exposing your inherent stup*dity.

Plus, that your NL display picture, try change am. Fast. E de add to my anger. You be like who dem swear for inside that coat

If the N1 per word offer is too low, go and pick it from the gutters na.

N1 per word offer is worse than 15k a month teaching job people do all over this country or you want to pretend it's not happening and people are applying en masse?

When you want to play Messiah you should have a better alternative at hand. If you don't, keep quiet. No one needs your opinion here.

If you like talk till next week, you're only wasting your time because in this country it's all man to himself and it's an individual that will decide what he wants to do and what he doesn't want to do.

If you think that because of this your rubbish analysis people will not do what's best for them then you'll tell whether na you go pay their bills.

I pay what I can afford. If my offer irks you, create a thread and post your offer with the high pay not just commenting rubbish on another person's offer without providing a better alternative.

That's when people will listen to you...till then, no one cares about your cries because don't feed anyone here.

Since 2018 (6 years) you’ve been looking for writers.

On every thread you open, you end up cursing and crying.

Your most recent testimony is the “30 idiots” (imagine what a human being calls his fellow for 1 naira per word) you deleted for submitting useless content (Contents that are a little more useful than yourself, though)

Now who is the bigger fuul?

Na advice I been de try give you, Mugu…

In the next ten years, with this your gutter attitude and mindset, you’ll keep shedding hot tears over the internet, looking for JSS2 students that will write for you.

After over half-a-decade, na 1 naira you still de offer your writers. Is that growth?

Person de advice you, but no, you prefer to perish in your ignorance.

He who mumus alone, perishes alone.

Don't know OP, but this is funny.

Have you tried getting writing jobs as a Nigerian? If the rate is not good enough, let such people source for jobs themselves.

Lol, till you enter this thing before you know the stress involved.

And if you know anything about the writing industry in Nigeria, you'd know that paying a lot is not a guarantee of good work. In my own experience, many writers are crap writers, like the OP said. Offering them a lot of money is like paying a lot of money for a crap car. It's still crap, you're just paying a lot because you don't know.

Hmmmmm

So I ask: have you tried opening a company in Nigeria?

Does that mean because opening a business in Nigeria is difficult, so businesses owners are justified to enslave workers, pay 10k a month with all manner of insults and threats?

Agba writer, Mark Twain, Earnest Hemingway, I know nothing about the writing industry. You have no justification whatsoever for offering “writers with blogging experience” 1 naira per word. NO reasonable justification.

Getting crappy content from so-called writers isn’t a Nigerian thing. Rubbish writers full Fiverr and Upwork. Agba experienced writer, you should know that better than the inexperienced me.

Any one who claims to have writing experience should know to do thorough screening. Of course, as someone rightly said, both the qualified and unqualified will definitely apply to job openings.

You then do your checks to pick the standard you want.

You de find quality shey? Watin stop you from sourcing them on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr? At least, the reviews/testimonials from past clients will sift the good from the bad. But you no go bold carry your 1N-per-word mentality enter there.

Stop making me talk too much. It’s a general rule; you get what you pay for.

Na only person wey no get shame and sense go call out someone you paid 1 naira per word for submitting crappy content.

My Point: OP is shameless and senseless

Dude is in the Senate and may be cooking something to retain his godfather status in Edo through 2024 elections.

He remains among Tinubu’s favorites, which automatically allows him enjoy’ federal might’

I understand your point though; him.having held ‘loud’ positions like NLC president, Edo Governor, and APC chairman, whereas the senatorial position isn't a loud one.

But trust me, Oshiomole is still on track.

What kind of help do u suggest please. We only paid up the much we can now because of loan interest accumulation

Honestly, I'm not a professional in addiction intervention/recovery therapy, but i think several factors would determine the best intervention; including:

His age----If he's too old to be controlled, that may be a greater concern

Is he fully dependent on you/your family for accommodation and survival? --- If yes, i believe you can moderate his excesses, limiting his access to money, etc

Now he's out of seminary, is he willing to venture into something also promising that'll keep him engaged, possibly within monitored environments? I think being idle would do him great harm right now.

Is the family financially buoyant to invest in a new career path for him? That may include sending him abroad for studies. ---believing a change of environment may help.

Then, I'm not sure how that works but I guess there should be in-patient rehabs in Nigeria that admit addicts for supervised round-the-clock treatments.

Like I said, I'm no pro, I'm just concerned and trying to be logical.

Gambling, as with all forms of addiction, can ruin one's life. Hence, professionals always preach early intervention. Make una try act fast. Wishing you all the best!

Why exactly did you settle 700k out of the 2 million debt?
Repaying the 2-million loan he collected to gamble should be your least problem right now. Your bros recovery should be top-most. Otherwise, anything you’re repaying right now na waste.

You should be more concerned about how much the addiction has eaten him up to take up to 2 MILLION Naira LOAN for betting. Whatever made him accumulate such a debt in betting is apparently bigger than the debt itself.

Besides, Paying his debts would only enable his addiction.

While finding an efficient therapy for his addiction, you should allow him feel the heat of his actions.

If you keep paying up his loans without an intervention/recovery therapy, his addition severity would get worse and that’s more trouble for you and your aged parents.
