Crime does not pay!

Thats it. The authour of the post is playing with our collective intelligence.
No 1. He intentionally omitted to state the prisoner offence
No2. They are not in awaiting trial cell but in cc. Codemn criminal cell
No 3 that means theyve been tried and convicted by a competent court of law for an offence which the court deemed should be punished by death.
No4 think of it the offence must have been the one punishable by death. Like murder. Armed robbery where lives were lost.
No5. That man could have deprived someone else of his own life.
So......what are we talking about.
17 yrs however in death row because the prisons lack enough executioners is pitiable.

I will not say anything again on the matter. I think we can all read think and analyse issue. I was worst than you when talking about hatred for police. I use to hate them with fervent passion but that incident i narrated previously plus other pleasant encounters not documented here changed my mind , especially when i visited the family of the dead police officer im my previous narration. You will pity them. Dont worry you cant understand. God bless you all.

I think some people on this forum are unemployed. Or else how can u dissipate your energy on a post without authentic source. The person who posted the list must have had a vision albeit based on alchohol and or marijuana intoxicatiion. That wasnt a memo. No letter head. No adress or adressee. Not possible for police to mix up towns because there is police presence in every of the over 500 local govts in nigeria and other locations. There is a map of each local govt in the office of the respective commissioner of police and in the cartography and computer section of the police.
Granted , there has been a lot of criticism of police actions . Some actions really are very disgusting but then from my personal encounter at more than two occassions.,we had cause to even write a letter of appreciation to the commissioner of police in Enugu . The way and manner the men handled the kidnapping matter left me in awe. One officer took a bullet for my boss. He had the option of running but chose to push my boss into safety while himself stood behind to delay the hoodlums to allow the hostage get safely into the waiting get away vehicle. I was surprised based on the negative stories i have heard. To me, for the sake of the many dedicated officers who are daily laying down their lives for people like us, we need to be careful of generalising issues so as not to dampen the morale of those hardworking officers. Lets treat every police officer on an individual case by cass basis please. After all i was surprised to see some known criminal elements on my street at port harcourt took part in the sars must go strike...then i understand the whole joke and drame

rabies in human
Understanding Rabies
Highlights
Rabies is a life-threatening condition that causes tens of thousands of deaths worldwide every year. Dogs are the most common source.
It’s caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system. The virus is transmitted to humans via bites and scratches from infected animals.
Rabies can be treated with the rabies vaccine if you seek medical attention as soon as you think you might have symptoms. To help prevent it, make sure that you and your pets are vaccinated.
Rabies — the word probably brings to mind an enraged animal frothing at the mouth. An encounter with an infected animal can result in a painful, life-threatening condition.

According to the World Health Organization, up to 59,000 people worldwide die from rabies every year. Ninety-nine percent of them have been bitten by a rabid dog. However, the availability of vaccines for both animals and humans has led to a steep decline in rabies cases in the United States, where there are two to three rabies deaths a year.

Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system, particularly causing inflammation in the brain. Domestic dogs, cats, and rabbits, and wild animals, such as skunks, raccoons, and bats, are able to transfer the virus to humans via bites and scratches. The key to fighting the virus is a quick response.

SYMPTOMS in human

Recognizing the Symptoms of Rabies
The period between the bite and the onset of symptoms is called the incubation period. It usually takes four to 12 weeks for a person to develop rabies symptoms once they’re infected. However, incubation periods can also range from a few days to six years.

The initial onset of rabies begins with flu-like symptoms, including:

fever
muscle weakness
tingling
You may also feel burning at the bite site.

As the virus continues to attack the central nervous system, there are two different types of the disease that can develop.

Furious Rabies
Infected people who develop furious rabies will be hyperactive and excitable and may display erratic behavior. Other symptoms include:

insomnia
anxiety
confusion
agitation
hallucinations
excess salivation
problems swallowing
fear of water
Paralytic Rabies
This form of rabies takes longer to set in, but the effects are just as severe. Infected people slowly become paralyzed, will eventually slip into a coma, and die. According to the World Health Organization, 30 percent of rabies cases are paralytic.

TRANSMISSION

How Do People Catch Rabies?
Animals with rabies transfer the virus to other animals and to people via saliva following a bite or via a scratch. However, any contact with the mucous membranes or an open wound can also spread the virus. The transmission of this virus is considered to be exclusively from animal to animal and animal to human. While human-to-human transmission of the virus is extremely rare, there have been a handful of cases reported following transplantation of corneas. For humans who contract rabies, a bite from an unvaccinated dog is by far the most common culprit.

Once a person has been bitten, the virus spreads through their nerves to the brain. It’s important to note that bites or scratches on the head and neck are thought to speed up the brain and spinal cord involvement because of the location of the initial trauma. If you’re bitten on the neck, seek help as soon as possible.

Following a bite, the rabies virus spreads by way of the nerve cells to the brain. Once in the brain, the virus multiplies rapidly. This activity causes severe inflammation of the brain and spinal cord after which the person deteriorates rapidly and dies.

Animals that Can Spread Rabies
Both wild and domesticated animals can spread the rabies virus. The following animals are the main sources of rabies infection in humans:

dogs
bats
ferrets
cats
cows
goats
horses
rabbits
beavers
coyotes
foxes
monkeys
raccoons
skunks
woodchucks

RISK FACTORS

Who Is at Risk of Contracting Rabies?
For most people, the risk of contracting rabies is relatively low. However, there are certain situations that may put you at a higher risk. These include:

living in an area that is populated by bats
traveling to developing countries
living in a rural area where there is greater exposure to wild animals and little or no access to vaccines and immunoglobulin preventive therapy
frequent camping and exposure to wild animals
being under the age of 15 (rabies is most common in this age group)
Although dogs are responsible for most rabies cases worldwide, bats are the cause of most rabies deaths in the Americas.

DIAGNOSIS

How Do Doctors Diagnose Rabies?
There is no test to detect the early stages of rabies infection. After the onset of symptoms, a blood or tissue test will help a doctor determine whether you have the disease. If you have been bitten by a wild animal, doctors will typically administer a preventive shot of rabies vaccine to stop the infection before symptoms set in.

TREATMENT

Can Rabies Be Cured?
After being exposed to the rabies virus, you can have a series of injections to prevent an infection from setting in. Rabies immunoglobulin, which gives you an immediate dose of rabies antibodies to fight the infection, helps to prevent the virus from getting a foothold. Then, getting the rabies vaccine is the key to avoiding the disease. The rabies vaccine is given in a series of five shots over 14 days.

Animal control will probably try to find the animal that bit you so that it can be tested for rabies. If the animal isn’t rabid, you can avoid the large round of rabies shots. However, if the animal can’t be found, the safest course of action is to take the preventive shots.

Getting a rabies vaccination as soon as possible after an animal bite is the best way to prevent the infection. Doctors will treat your wound by washing it for at least 15 minutes with soap and water, detergent, or iodine. Then, they’ll give you the rabies immunoglobin and you’ll start the round of injections for the rabies vaccine. This protocol is known as “post-exposure prophylaxis.”

Side Effects of Rabies Treatment
The rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin can very rarely cause some side effects, including:

pain, swelling, or itching at the injection site
headache
nausea
stomach pain
muscle aches
dizziness

PREVENTION

How to Prevent Rabies
Rabies is a preventable disease. There are some simple measures you can take to help keep you from catching rabies:

Get a rabies vaccination before traveling to developing countries, working closely with animals, or working in a lab handling the rabies virus.
Vaccinate your pets.
Keep your pets from roaming outside.
Report stray animals to animal control.
Avoid contact with wild animals.
Prevent bats from entering living spaces or other structures near your home.
You should report any signs of an infected animal to your local animal control or health departments.

26 Warning Signs of Rabies in Dogs
Rabies is a deadly virus that attacks the nervous system and can cause brain inflammation. Although survival is possible, the virus almost always kills its host. The virus grows in the muscle tissue before moving into the spinal cord and brain. large amounts of the virus are found in saliva and are transmitted when the infected mammal bites an uninfected mammal.

Other methods of transmission include scratches or infected blood or saliva coming in contact with another mammal’s open wound. In extremely rare cases, the virus is said to still be transmittable by inhaling the gasses from decomposing infected animals.

Wild animals pose the largest threat because they are typically not vaccinated and come into contact with other wild animals. Common carriers include bats and raccoons.
Initial Warning Signs

There are multiple phases of the rabies virus. Infected hosts may experience 1, 2 or more of these phases. The following warning signs are associated with the earliest phase:

1. Restlessness
2. Apprehension
3. Aggression
4. Licking, biting or chewing at the area of the infectious bite
5. Fever
6. Shyness
7. Irritability
8. Unusually docile behaviour in an active animal
9. Biting or snapping

Progressive Warning Signs

As the virus moves from the muscle to the spinal cord, brain and eventually the saliva glands, different signs will appear. These symptoms usually occur in the last 2 phases of the virus:

10. Heightened sensitivity to light, touch or sound
11. Jaw hangs open
12. Difficulty swallowing
13. Heavy breathing
14. Choking sounds or motions
15. Eating unusual items
16. Hiding in dark places
17. Paralysis of the hind legs or staggering
18. Loss of control over the throat
19. Foaming at the mouth
20. Disorientation or lack of coordination
21. Loss of appetite
22. Weakness
23. Fear of water
24. Trembling
25. Dilated pupils
26. Seizures

Symptoms can appear as early as 10 days after the bite to as long as months afterwards.
Prevention

Dogs who are not vaccinated or allowed outdoors without supervision have a higher risk of contracting rabies from an infected animal. Prevention is necessary to lower the risk of contracting or spreading this deadly disease.

Dogs can be vaccinated for rabies. Some countries, such as the United Kingdom, don’t experience rabies and therefore don’t offer this vaccination. Keep your dog leashed outdoors and always supervise the dog when outside. Avoid contact with wild animals where possible.
If you suspect your dog has been exposed to an infected animal or exhibits any of the listed warning signs of rabies in dogs, it is important to get to your veterinarian’s office as soon as possible. Don’t place your hands or any other part of your body near the dog’s mouth. Use a crate or other confined enclosure and, in the event of aggressive or severe signs, head to the nearest animal emergency clinic.

If you have been in contact with an animal you suspect is infected or you have been bitten, report the incident immediately and seek medical care. Rabies is a deadly disease and survival is rare, so don’t delay in reporting incidents and seeking care.

dear all ive been following the different statements above. lets get some things clear
1) some dogs carries rabies infection but not all dogs.
2) some other animals do carry the virus too, so not only DOGS
3)There is vaccine for rabies to be given to Dogs at prescribed interval which every owner must endeavour to ensure it is given as scheduled.
4) there is nothing like small dog bite .bite is bite. every bite should be taken seriously and medical attention obtained as soon as possible
5) ensure you seek treatment from reputable clinic to avoid fake or expired vaccine
6) the owner of the dog is liable if his or her dog bite someone not to talk of infecting someone with rabies which may lead to death
7) rabies is deadly
cool i dont know which dog bite that boy but the parents can sue the owner in civil suit and or can institute criminal proceeding of negligence causing death if the victim dies
9) educate your family on the danger of animal bite and to seek urgent and prompt medical attention,
those keeping pets of all kinds including cats must ensure they see a vet doctor regularly with the pets
10)EVEN THOUGH SOMEONE NOW CLAIMS IT HAPPENED IN UGANDA A YEAR AGO, THE FACT REMAINS THE THREAT IS REAL
11) The current president of Gambia lost his 10 year old son to a rabid dog bite early this year shortly before being sworn in

martyns303:
Are u sure? I know the Nigerian police can be incompetent, and considering they did not arrive on time, you have every reason to be pissed. But let's look at your story.

1. You noticed a bang on your gate at 1am.

2. Between when u woke up, tried calling your neighbors to know if they are the ones at the gate, went online to check for police emergency response number, dialing them and having a conversation, at least 20mins or more would have passed.

3. The robbers operated for an hour

4. Police arrived 2hours later

From your statement, the police would have arrived no later than 4:20am. Now are you sure that was the time they actually arrived?

Most times in situations like that, time seem to be moving faster than they actually are. You were probably expecting them to appear in like 5mins. I doubt the robbers would have operated that long knowing u called the police (u made them believe so).

Now you need to understand that the police would need time to mobilize themselves, get in their van and start coming to your place and this is subject to where they are coming from, the distance.

I know the Nigerian police is not what they ought to be, but I also know they can be pretty effective and rugged.

God bless Nigeria.

that just it. sometime we are so fast to blame the police yet some of us had pleasant experiences where some police even laid down their lives. they are human beings too. are you following the zenith bank owerri case, if a police officer get killed , its left for his family ...all alone. Govt has absolute no provision for them apart from salary...is it like that oversea.....abeg angry
