It was the promise of a great deal that Raul Gonzalez said prompted him to order a drone that popped up in his Instagram feed in October. A dropshipping europe company called "Military Tees" said they'd marked down an $800 combat drone to just $100. But the supposedly high-quality drone arrived in a plastic customdropshipping bag from China.

"It was smashed. And I was like, 'What? What's this?' So I pulled it out, looked at it. I'm like, 'Whoa. That's not what I ordered.'"

The drone does fly, but when he demonstrated it for CBS News correspondent Anna Werner, the battery started dying after just a couple minutes.

Many people are being scammed by questionable ads on social media platforms like Instagram. Some products never arrive, while others turn out to be different than what you saw advertised. Almost all the ads in question come from companies you've never heard of before, promoting deep discounts, or even making deal with wholesale clothes suppliers philippines.

Not only was the drone Gonzalez ordered not the high-end model he expected, he said it's not even worth what he paid for it. He found the drone available elsewhere for under $50 and when he contacted the company, he said says Military Tees wouldn't provide a refund.

Here's how to fight scammers

"I'm trying to go about this the nice way. You guys aren't going about it the nice way…I'm going to file a complaint against you guys," Gonzalez said.

He's not the only one complaining, according to Katherine Hutt of the Better Business Bureau.

"It's hard to tell on social media advertising what's real and what's not, and unfortunately a lot of the ads are fake," Hutt said.

She said some of the ads feature photos of real high-quality products like trendy wholesale clothing, but what the scammers are selling are cheap knockoffs. The snow blower one shopper thought he ordered turned out to be an ice scraper. Two other people told us they thought they bought "motorized surfboards" but instead got foam boogie boards. Hutt said do your research.

"The scammers use the same tactic that legitimate salespeople use. They know what works and that's what they use," Hutt said.

Artist Jenny Odell learned how some of those "companies" work while researching a particular watch as part of an art project. They're sold at deep discounts on Instagram. The stores looked hip, and trendy.

"A lot of the wording was, you know, copy and pasted from other websites. And a lot of the imagery was just stock imagery," Odell said

Odell found the people behind those companies were actually doing what's called "dropshipping" -- setting up what looks like a store selling its own products online but instead simply acting as a middle man, marketing items from manufacturers, often in China. Those overseas companies then ship directly to the customer. The dropshipper doesn't design or manufacture the items or even hold any inventory.

"So you think that you're on a unique boutique site, somebody who's curated a really cool collection of clothes or shoes or accessories and really what you doing is you're just purchasing from a mass manufacturer who is going to dropship that package to you," Hutt said.

Odell never found out who was actually selling those watches. Unlike with a regular store, she said pinpointing their location turned out to be "impossible."

"I think after what I found, honestly, I wouldn't buy anything off of Instagram…I don't know, maybe I have more of an appreciation for brick-and-mortar retail now because at least you're in a place and you can see the thing and you can touch it and you can talk to people," Odell said.

Raul Gonzalez did get his money back, but only after filing a complaint with his credit card provider. He said Military Tees didn't even want the drone back. He discovered many others had similar complaints about the company. Instagram banned their ads and their website is no longer working. They never responded to our request for comment.

"It's wrong. It should be illegal. It's like, you know, saying I'm selling you a Jaguar and giving you a Pinto. I mean, it's the same thing," Gonzalez said.

We asked Instagram to sit down with us. It declined to do an on-camera interview but told us every ad gets screened before it's posted, with either human or automated review.

The company said that review allows it "to catch most of the policy-violating ads, but" that it's "continuously working to improve since some still manage to slip through."

A couple of things to look out for: the biggest red flag is a "too good to be true" price – if it's dramatically lower than that of other sellers, the Better Business Bureau said watch out.

Also, you can google the URL for the website to see if other people are complaining, and of course research products before you buy.

At least 3,000 Genesee County children in need will be serviced through Toys for Tots this year, according to the program’s coordinator, Vicky Muckenthaler.

Toys and wholesale baby items for Tots started in California in 1947 when a Marine’s wife starting giving handmade dolls to kids on a base, and it began in Genesee County in the late ‘70s. Walt Disney designed the logo.

“I just changed the requirements for sign it to make it a little easier for the clients to sign up last year when I took the program over,” Muckenthaler said.

Another difference in the program compared to previous years is Toys “R” Us is no longer around to take donations for the program. This change has affected other communities more than Genesee County, where the community is highly supportive of the program.

“Genesee County has been hit pretty hard with the water situation and GM moving out,” Muckenthaler said. “But Genesee County is also very good to us in the toy donations and the monetary donations.”

“Without volunteers, we would not be able to help the community,” she said.

In addition to the volunteers, Muckenthaler said the people who donate to Toys for Tots are the heart of the operation.

“Toys For Tots is the number one children’s charity, and there’s a reason for that,” she said.

Muckenthaler is able to purchase toys from toy wholesale companies.

“For every $5 you spend on one toy, I can get three or four toys,” Muckenthaler said. “But toy donations and monetary donations are both good. Ninety-seven cents of every dollar we get has to be spent on a toy.”

However, a bank of our size cannot afford to be out-of-the-term loan space,” said Kaizad Bharucha, executive director, HDFC Bank, adding 30 per cent of the bank's wholesale book was by way of term loans. HDFC Bank’s wholesale loan growth has outpaced other lenders by a wide margin.

He said the GST regulation made the SME segment more bankable and gave the sector access to formal lines of credit as well as technology, which can benefit them and bring down costs.

HDFC Bank is leveraging its geographical reach, digital offerings, and its complete suite of products in order to reach out to both existing customers as well as new ones, including those who are new to banking.

Study Reveals Diversity Needs in Marketing Campaigns

In a study commissioned by Shutterstock Inc. and conducted by Censuswide, dropship home decor marketing campaigns still exhibit a generational divide in using “more diverse representation.”

Pooling survey data from more than 2,500 marketers across Australia, Brazil, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S. and completed between Oct. 8 and Oct. 15, the survey found the majority of marketers in Australia (73 percent), the U.S. (72 percent), Brazil (67 percent) and Germany (60 percent) agree that standardization of the “gender stereotyping rule,” as practiced in the U.K., should be adopted in their countries.

The survey also revealed that while Generation Z and Millennial marketers had utilized more imagery featuring diverse models within the last year, Generation X and Baby Boomer marketers showed less “follow through.”

This disconnect in generational follow-through is seen in how marketers are composing their campaigns, and in the last 12 months, Gen Z marketers and Millennial marketers are leading the push for more same-sex couples, transgender models, people with disabilities and gender-fluid models.

As it compares, 35 percent of Generation Z and 37 percent of Millennials cast “racially diverse models” versus 27 percent of Generation X and 16 percent of Baby Boomers.

“There is clearly a shift occurring in our industry as the next generation of marketers find their footing and visualize their beliefs related to diversity of race, gender and abilities in the marketing campaigns they’re creating,” said Lou Weiss, Shutterstock’s chief marketing officer.

Emotional reaction, shareability of images, connection between the images, the message portrayed and the representation of modern society were among the criteria for marketers in selecting campaign imagery.

As for how the outlook of diverse imagery in marketing is perceived, Shutterstock found a majority “agree there is still room for growth” with Australia (87 percent), Brazil (95 percent), Germany (86 percent), the U.K. (88 percent) and the U.S. (89 percent).

Regardless, the younger generations’ claim for diversity will be increasingly demanded across marketing channels, as this snapshot reveals.

Procter & Gamble is launching a new concentrated new Tide liquid detergent in a container the size of a small shoebox – designed for e-commerce only.

With digital sales soaring, P&G said the new formulation and packaging targeted for digital sales is the first of its kind at the company.

Less than 8 pounds, the compact size also makes it both environmentally friendly and ideal for urban consumers with tight living quarters.

Called Tide's Eco-Box, the suggested retail price is $19.99 – the same price as the traditional 96-load jug.

The box of liquid detergent contains 30 percent less water and weighs four pounds less than the unconcentrated 96-load jug and uses 60 percent less plastic. It's good for the environment because it sends less packaging to landfills and because it's 33 percent lighter, consumes less fuel to ship.

"If everyone who buys the 96 load plastic bottle of Tide switched to the Tide Exo-Box, we could save enough plastic to cover 5,000 football fields each year," said Isaac Hellemn, P&G's brand manager for e-commerce.

The campaign allows customers and the crowd to invest in Thread as part of its recent Series B funding round, giving crowd investors access to the same financial terms as the professionals.

During the campaign’s private phase, the cheap wholesale jewelry company reached its £500,000 target in less than one hour and has now raised over £1 million as its campaign opens to the public on Crowdcube.

Thread is joining the likes of Monzo, Revolut and Mr & Mrs Smith who have all raised millions through the platform.

Thread’s $22m Series B funding round came from Balderton Capital, Beringea, Forward Partners, and H&M group’s investment arm H&M CO:LAB. It also saw participation from noted retail investor Maurice Helfgott and former Lane Crawford deputy president Sebastian Picardo.

The round brings total investment in Thread to over $40 million, with the company planning to use the new financing to accelerate the growth of the business, improve customer experience and grow data-driven private label brands.

Founded in London by Kieran O’Neill, Ben Kucsan, and Ben Phillips in 2012, Thread was part of the Y Combinator program, which helped create industry leaders such as Airbnb and Dropbox.

Its goal is to become the one-stop clothes shopping service, in the way that people use Uber to get from A to B, or Spotify to listen to music.

During the last year, Thread has signed partnerships with 50 additional partners.

New brands include Barbour, Hugo Boss, Levi’s and Ted Baker, as well as emerging labels such as Wax London, Kestin Hare and The Workers Club. The company employs around 100 people and has over a million users.

"The ability for our customers to share in the success of Thread is something that is really important to me, and crowdfunding is a great way for us to democratise our funding round by opening up the opportunity to everyone," said CEO and co-founder Kieran O’Neill.
