Entertainment / Watch Jean-claude Van Damme Epic Split For Volvo AD by Leadn(m): 11:28pm On Nov 17, 2013
Van Damme proves he’s still got it! Watch he’s epic split in new Volvo Ad

It’s hard not to feel anything but respect for Jean-Claude Van Damme, the famed Belgian martial artist and action star, who manages to perform an impossibly difficult-looking split between the side-view mirrors of two moving trucks.

The Volvo ad above is mean to “demonstrate the stability and precision of Volvo dynamic steering,” but what it really shows off is JCVD’s strength and stamina. After dozens of films, including Street Fighter and The Expendables, the 53-year-old still has what it takes to stand out — notably, incredibly robust groin muscles.

The serenity of Van Damme’s countenance during the whole effort is only mirrored by the commercial’s soundtrack, Enya’s “Only Time.”

Education / Prof Festus Iyayi Died From Crash With Kogi Governor's Envoy by Leadn(m): 8:21am On Nov 13, 2013

Yesterday, Festus Iyayi, former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU) between 1986 and 1988 died in a fatal auto crash involving the convoy of Kogi State Governor Idris Wada.

The accident which occurred at about 11am at Banda village on the Lokoja-Abuja Road is the second fatal crash in one year involving the governor's convoy.

On December 28, 2012, Wada's convoy crashed on its way to Lokoja from Ayingba, Kogi State.

Wada’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC) died on the spot.

The governor’s leg was broken. Other officials suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Iyayi and other members of ASUU, University of Benin branch, were on their way to Kano for a meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the union scheduled to hold today. The meeting is to enable the NEC receive reports of the congresses that held “simultaneously” in the universities across the country.

According to The Nation, giving account of how the accident occurred, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kogi State Sector Command Mr. Olakunle Motajo said preliminary investigation revealed that there was wrongful overtaken by the governor’s convoy. He said investigation had started.

Dr. Sunday Abada,an ASUU member who was also part of the ill-fated ASUU delegation, also gave The Nation an account of how the accident happened.

“About 15 union members from various institutions, moving in a three-vehicle convoy, were on their way to Kano to participate in the NEC meeting scheduled to hold in Bayero University, Kano (BUK) today.

“We were on our way to Kano State for our NEC meeting holding tomorrow (today) when a vehicle in the convoy of Governor Idris Wada on full speed left its lane and collided with the vehicle conveying our members along the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway.

Prof Iyayi died on the spot.

“It was later, at 4pm, the govenror led a group of reporters to the Specialist Hospital where the remains of Iyayi are deposited. We had to chase him away because we discovered that he was trying to politicise the incident. But I can confirm to you that only Iyayi died in the accident; the other victims are receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital".

UNIBEN ASUU Chair Dr. Tony Moye-Emina who was also injured in the crash gave his own account of how the accident happened, “The governor’s vehicle left its lane and rammed into our union vehicle. The impact made our bus to somersault several times.

It was by the grace of God that I survived but we lost Prof Iyayi and I learnt Dr Iloh is critically injured,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government, in a statement on the incident said the governor’s convoy was “on a speed of 80 kilometers per hour when a bus collided with the escort van”. “Sadly, in the storm, it was discovered that a renowned academic and respected human rights advocate, Prof. Festus Iyayi, who was in the other vehicle, died in the accident. There were other victims with varying degrees of injuries from both sides.

“The victims were immediately evacuated to the State Specialist Hospital in Lokoja on the governor’s directive. The injured are responding to treatment.

“The Governor has ordered full scale investigation into the
matter and paid a visit to the injured. Capt. Wada sympathised with the victims and their families.

He wished the deceased a peaceful repose of his soul.”

Foreign Affairs / Typhoon Haiyan: UN Launches $301m Philippines Aid Appeal by Leadn(m): 5:14pm On Nov 12, 2013
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-24910918
The UN has launched an appeal for $301m (£190m) to help relief efforts in typhoon-hit areas of the Philippines.

At least 10,000 people are feared to have been killed by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the central Philippines on Friday.

The UN says more than 11 million people are believed to have been affected by the storm, and some 673,000 displaced.

Several countries have deployed ships to help the relief effort, but bad weather is hampering aid distribution.

The BBC's Jonathan Head, in the badly-hit city of Tacloban on Leyte island, says the main
road from the airport to the city is clogged with refugees and debris, and that residents
are becoming angry at the lack of progress and increasing breakdown in security.

Valerie Amos, the UN's Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and
Emergency Relief, has arrived in Manila to head the aid operation.

She told the BBC the storm had been far worse than expected, and that people in the affected regions were "absolutely desperate".

"They need food, they need water, they need shelter. People need to be protected," she said.

Helicopters were also in urgent need to help with assessing the damage, she said.

Baroness Amos told reporters the UN would work alongside the Philippine government, and that efforts would focus on "food, health, sanitation, shelter, debris removal and also protection of the most vulnerable".

"I very much hope our donors will be generous," she said.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes, at the UN in Geneva, says the operation will be one of the
most challenging the body has ever mounted.

Survivors are scattered across several of the 7,000 islands which make up the Philippines, says the BBC's correspondent.

Many areas have not yet been reached, he says - so the figures of those in need, and the estimated death toll of 10,000, could rise.

The UN has already released $25m to address the immediate needs of survivors.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described the situation as "heartbreaking".

Large parts of the Philippines have been devastated by Typhoon Haiyan.

A state of national calamity was declared on Monday - a measure designed to speed the supply of aid to the two worst affected provinces, Leyte and Samar.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has put the
official death toll at 1,774, as of early Tuesday morning, with 2,487 wounded and 82 people listed as missing.

Aid agencies have warned that the security situation is worsening.

Correspondents say food warehouses and grocery shops had been ransacked, and that people were starting to fear for their safety.

There were also reports that an aid convoy travelling to Tacloban was attacked and two of the assailants shot dead by troops.

Bodies of typhoon victims are lying in the streets or buried under rubble. Some have
been buried in mass graves.

The airport at Tacloban - a city with a population of 220,000 - has been severely damaged, meaning aid planes were not able to land for some time.

Large crowds gathered at the airport hoping to be evacuated.

One woman hoping to be flown out said she had had to leave the body of her grandson at a temporary morgue in a hotel. Her son and his wife were also died.

"I asked the mortuary to give my son and his wife proper coffins, but they told me their
staff had not reported for work and that some of them were probably dead as well," Maria Adelfa Jomerez told the AFP news agency.

"There are no vehicles to transport them to the cemetery anyway. I would prefer that they not be buried in a mass grave, but I cannot do anything about that."

A spokesman for President Aquino said aid was gradually going in.

"We are not going to leave one person behind, not one living person behind," the Associated Press quotes him as saying.

The Philippines air force has been flying C-130 transport planes in and out of Tacloban,
carrying relief supplies and evacuating hundreds of residents, a military official told AP.

The US is sending its aircraft carrier USS George Washington and other navy ships to help with the relief work. The carrier is expected to arrive within the next few days.

The UK's Royal Navy destroyer HMS Daring is also making its way from Singapore.

Other countries have also pledged millions of dollars in assistance. Japan is providing $10m and Australia $9m in humanitarian aid, while New Zealand has pledged over $1m.

Haiyan - named "Yolanda" by Philippine authorities - struck the coastal provinces of Leyte and Samar on Friday. It was one of the most powerful storms on record to make
landfall.

Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated before the typhoon arrived, but many evacuation centres were unable to withstand the winds and storm surges.

Haiyan brought sustained winds of 235km/h (147mph), with gusts of 275 km/h (170 mph) and waves as high as 15m (45ft).

The typhoon then headed west, sweeping through six central Philippine islands and into Vietnam, where state media said at least 13 people had died.

At least six were also reported killed in southern China, after Haiyan tore through Hainan province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region over the weekend, state media reports.

In the UK, the Disaster Emergency Committee
(DEC) group of 14 charities launched its own appeal to help the typhoon victims on
Tuesday.

DEC chairman Salah Saeed compared the destruction in the city of Tacloban to that seen after the devastating tsunami of 2004.

"There is currently no food, water or electricity. We can only imagine how much worse the situation will be for families living in towns and remote villages," he said.

Foreign Affairs / Entire Devon Village With A Beach Goes On Sale For £10million by Leadn(m): 11:28am On Nov 12, 2013
www.xtremegists.com/entire-devon-village-with-a-beach-goes-on-sale-for-10million-2 shocked
As crazy as it may sound an entire picture-postcard village complete with thatched cottages, a pub, a shop and a beach is set to be sold for £10million!.

The pretty community of Bantham in south Devon helped inspire Agatha Christie and is a favourite holiday spot for tycoon Richard Branson (Virgin Atlantic).

It contains 25 homes, cobbled streets, one pub, a shop which only opens on weekends and a stunning beach.

But the village sits on one of the largest family-owned estates in Britain which leases out the majority of the properties.

The estate has been in the same family for generations and many of the resident's tenancies have passed down through the generations.

But they could now face being evicted and left homeless after it emerged the village and wider estate is set to be sold.

The Evans Estate - which also includes land and properties in Wales and Dorset - is set to go on the market for £35million.

It is not known if Bantham can be bought separately from the rest of the estate but experts say its homes, land and beach make up around £10million of the sale.

Locals received letters last week confirming the village and its surrounding land will be put up for sale.

Barbara Tucker, a tenant who runs Bantham village shop with her husband Kevin, said: "We are used to millionaires coming to visit here as it is so picturesque. But our real fear is we will be sold to a faceless financial institution who will not care about Bantham at all."

Obviously there is huge uncertainty and anxiety in the village, with many of us worrying about whether we will lose our homes.

"We can only hope and pray that the new owners will be sympathetic to the locals."

The Bantham location includes extensive farmland, houses and the beach that overlooks Burgh Island.

The island was a frequent holiday haunt of Agatha Christie and where she penned several books including 'Evil Under The Sun' and 'And Then There Were None'.

Evans Estates has refused to confirm the sale. It says on their website: "The estate at Bantham has been in the same family for several generations."

Their ethos has always been to allow Bantham to remain a place of outstanding beauty, with the village's old thatched cottages portraying an image of unchanging charm and the beach and its surrounds staying as wild and natural as can be."

Barbara said Bantham villagers are planning to set up a committee to deal with the estate’s land agents, Michelmore Hughes.

She said: "Many of our leases and tenancy agreements are very old and different from each other, so sorting it all out would be a real headache.

"We've heard rumours for the past eight months that we could be up for sale, now it’s confirmed we just want to know what will happen to us."

"Even though we don’t own our houses, they are our homes and we love it here."

Many people here have lived in Bantham for 60 years or more, with some tenancies being passed down through several generations of the same family.

Rod Seymour, landlord of The Sloop Inn in Bantham, said Evans Estates had been responsible and well-liked landowners over the years and would be greatly missed.

He said: "They have always run the beach with an eye to keeping it very natural and unspoilt, and supported local businesses and families."

"We are very concerned that a new owner may not share the same attitude."

Estate agency Strutt and Parker is said to be conducting the Evans Estates sale, although its spokesperson said the company could not comment at this stage.

KitKat on Nexus 5

Science/Technology / Google Nexus 5 Officially Unveiled With Android 4.4 Kitkat by Leadn(m): 10:00am On Nov 01, 2013
The Google Nexus 5 is now official having been
unveiled via the Google Play Store. The latest
LG-made Google phone is set to replace the
Nexus 4 which had, until now, been the
flagship Android smartphone made by the
company.

The LG Nexus 5 features a similarly if not
more minimal design compared to that of the
Nexus 4, so much so that even the small
design touch on the back of the Nexus 4 has
been replaced by a matte black surface with
the word ‘nexus’ in the middle.

Once again though LG and Google appear to
have made a flagship smartphone that’s in
disguise as the specs are immpressively
premium making it a serious contender for
Apple’s iPhone 5c.

Just 8.59mm thin the Nexus 5 is the slimmest
Google phone to date making it thinner than
the iPhone 5s though not as thin as say the
Samsung Galaxy S4.

The Nexus 5 screen is certainly impressive on
paper, a 5-inch Full-HD display sporting a
massive 1920x1080p resolution with 445ppi
making it significantly higher in resolution
than the iPhone 5s and even the Amazon
Kindle Fire HDX tablet.

The design also appears to feature a much
smaller bezel than that found on the Nexus 4,
instead the Nexus 5 has a design on the front
which looks very similar to the LG G2 .

If the design is a little too minimalist for you
then you’ll be able to kit your new phone out
with some Nexus 5 cases available in four
distinct colours.

Inside you’ll find there’s an impressive quad-
core 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800
processor along with 2GB RAM and 16GB of
storage. Sadly no microSD support though
which will surely come as a blow to the
Android die-hards out there.

On the back there’s an 8MP camera with the
ability to shoot 1080p Full-HD video along
with a 1.3MP front-facing camera for Google+
Hangout conversations and of course Skype.
Wireless charging comes as standard which
means you won’t have to buy an extra case
whilst 4G connectivity is available, something
that many criticised the Nexus 4 for not
having.

Of course the first thing people will notice
when they turn the device on however is the
addition of Google’s new operating system
Android 4.4 KitKat .

KitKat comes with some key design changes
which make the OS seem less intrusive on the
screen, it should also allow more focus on that
Full-HD display.

The Nexus 5 also comes with the new version
of Google Now which first appeared on the
Motorola Moto X allowing you to ask your
smartphone to perform tasks even when the
phone is locked.

Looking set to take on Apple’s Siri, Google
Now will be able to set alarms, answer
questions and perform actions all without a
physical prompt as the smartphone’s mic will
be able to recognise when it’s being spoken to
intelligently recognising that it’s you and not
someone else.

The Nexus 5 release date is today, you’ll be
able to buy the 16GB version in either
Black or White for £299 whilst the 32GB
version will set you back £339 .

Nairaland / General / Strange! Frozen Mammoth With Blood Still Flowing Found In Siberia by Leadn(m): 1:23pm On Jun 01, 2013
Talk about Ice-Age discovery! Extinct
Mammoth found frozen with blood still
flowing…

Russian scientists discovered a fully-grown female mammoth with blood and well-preserved muscle tissue trapped in ice in Siberia.

The findings come amid debates on whether the extinct species should be resurrected using DNA.

Scientists say they have managed to find mammoth blood during the excavation of a grown female animal on the Lyakhovsky Islands, the southernmost group of the New Siberian Islands in the Arctic seas of northeastern Russia.

The dark blood was found in ice cavities below the belly of the animal. When researchers broke the cavities with a poll pick, the blood came flowing out.
The fact surprised them because the
temperature was 10C below zero.
