Travel / Re: Passengers Weep As Aero Aircraft Struggle To Land For Hours by Leftfoot: 10:34pm On May 07, 2010
quote by Jarus "so you think aviation fuel is more expensive than lives".

I think you miss the point.  My point is why fly around an unsafe airport for 2 hours when you can go somewhere safe to land.  Two hours fuel can take you to a lot of safe airports in Nig.

Good point.  Imagine wasting expensive aviation fuel for two hours.  Somebody does not have their thinking cap on.

My Questions is

“if the weather in Lagos was bad, therefore making it difficult for the plane to land, could it not be better to simply go back to Abuja, or even to the nearest safest airport to land rather than risking the life of about 100 passengers. I am just struggling to understand why a pilot would make seven unsuccessful attempt; spend two hours hovering under “bad weather” condition, and yet insist in landing in same airport – would that not be a decision error on the part of the pilot?.
Culture / Re: Mis-used And Mis-pronounced English Words by Leftfoot: 6:32pm On May 07, 2010
How about the pronunciation of short and long "e”.  It appears they pronounce these words the same:
Hit – Heat
It – Eat
Hip – Heap
Bit – Beat
Live – Leave

You get the idea.

Sorry for bringing up the corruption debate. It did not occur to me until I posted my comments that the debate was over 2 years ago. Oh well,

I don't think and I believe it is not reasonable to expect that corruption will be completely eliminated in Nigeria.  But I believe efforts should be made to reduce the practice so that it is not in all aspects of our lives (banks, post office, passport office, etc).  The big question is where to start.  The government or the people.  This is the classic case of which comes first - the chicken or the egg.

Please note that to take advantage of what Avenir said, you have to be a current member of ISACA.
Travel / Re: Why Does It Cost So Much To Travel To Nigeria? by Leftfoot: 2:53pm On Mar 31, 2010
I may be wrong, but some airlines charge by mileage.  So if you take Air France for example from Lagos to US.  If the airline travels from Lagos to Paris and then to the US, it will charge you for the total mileage.  So it is cheaper to get direct flights.  But since most of the airlines going and coming from Nigeria are foreign, they usually go to their home country first.

@ Outstrip - Here are some on-line examples of how the following are pronounced:
listen
hasten
christen
soften
glisten

As you can see, they are all pronounced without the T.

@ chiogo  - If most Nigerians are pronouncing "listen" with the T, I will not call it a culture thing.  It looks like somewhere along the education system, someone dropped the ball.  Mind you, if the teacher does not know it, the teacher will not teach it.
Culture / Re: Do Nigerians Murder The English Language? by Leftfoot: 3:51am On Nov 28, 2009
There are a lot of words that are mispronounced that has nothing to do with accent.  There are a few silent letters in words that are not meant to be pronounced.  E.G, the T in listen, the second B in bomb and the T in mortgage.  This has nothing to do with British, Nigerian or American pronunciation.  Now were these English rules taught in Nigerian schools? Maybe maybe not.  I think the lesson that can be learn from this thread is for people to point out some of these pronunciation rules we missed in school and pass on the knowledge.
Travel / Re: Renewal Of Nigerian Passport In The Us by Leftfoot: 1:58am On Nov 25, 2009
If by renewal you mean to extend the years from 5 to 10, then you have to send in your passport to the embassy near you.  The process will take about 2 weeks.  If you need a new passport, I don't know the detail.  I am guessing you have to physically show up at the embassy.
Career / Re: IT Audit Profession In Nigeria by Leftfoot: 4:54pm On Nov 23, 2009
Thanks for that wonderful response.  I was just wondering what the demand is for IT audit.  I was hoping the demand would be as close to the regular IT profession.  I guess a lot of the IT Auditors outside Nigeria who want to work in Nigeria would either be self-employed or work for the big 4.
Career / IT Audit Profession In Nigeria by Leftfoot: 8:01pm On Nov 18, 2009
Does anyone know how much of a demand there is for this profession.  How does senior management ensure that IT controls are working the way they are intended? Management needs an independent evaluation of it's IT environment.  Any Thoughts?

Thanks redsky1 for the link.   They look expensive though.  It may be ok for someone staying 2 to 3 days.  I may be staying for 3 weeks.  I am hoping there is something between N51,250 and N10,000 a day.

Travel / List Of Cheap Hotels In Port Harcourt by Leftfoot: 6:24pm On Nov 13, 2009
I am planning on going to PH shortly to visit family and friends.  In the past I have always stayed with my family.  However, I have had issues with privacy.  So this time around I would like to have some privacy preferable in a hotel.  I do not want anything fancy, just something decent, like AC, running water and maybe backup generator.  My budget is between N2000 and N3500 a day.  Can someone please provide me with the names of hotels that meet my needs?  Additional advice/ideas would be appreciated.  Thank you.
