Culture / Re: Soulja Boy Shouts Out Slave Masters by Lita(f): 10:17pm On Jul 03, 2009
i know in one area of the states the advent of rice and the mosquitos that came along with them drove most of the whites away, including the owners, turning it into a white-mans-grave in the US. they maintained a lot of their original language and culture to this day. anyway, point being that africans were vital for a lot of the plantation work. besides, completely broken, the slaves would have been far easier to control than any indentured labourer who was at least considered human.

"It is not even our culture for a woman to change her name to her husband's name so I don't know what this brouhaha is about. Rolling my damn eyes."

Family / Re: What Should A Good Wife Do With Her Earnings? by Lita(f): 8:29pm On Jul 03, 2009
so what does the man do if it all falls apart? by all means, maintain a career, a level of independence (which, i concede may mean both keeping a little money aside) but both parties have to invest as much of their energies to create a successful marriage.

i'd like to believe a family can pool money. they can, together, put money aside for a rainy day. i don't see why she should be squirrelling hers away. that's (hopefully) how i'd do things.
Religion / Re: Skeptics And Atheists In Nigeria: How Do You Manage? by Lita(f): 7:06pm On Jul 03, 2009
brief digression: i am not atheist, rather agnostic, so possibly explains my position-

i believe there is a realm (call it spiritual, call it supernatural) of things that we do not understand, or cannot be yet explained by science. people who pray and who are religious (i do not and am not) have a tendency to deal with and recover from illness better. that is a fact. there are unexplained things that happen. people return from the brink of death. bad things happen to good people. good things happen to bad.

i
believe that god should not be a catch all for all we don't know. that is intellectually lazy, and can be a dangerous tool for evil people. similarly, i think that a staunch belief in one's own reason has got to be arrogance. the argument as to whether belief for non-belief is more intelligent is unhelpful. there are countless examples of god-fearing and god-rejecting people who are very intelligent.

i am a nigerian who's never lived in Nigeria, but hopes to do so next year, so will be following this thread carefully. grin

again, what's the difference.
Religion / Re: What Are Athiest Ideology? by Lita(f): 4:58pm On Jul 03, 2009
i am not an atheist, but an agnostic that leans towards atheism. by this i believe that one cannot prove or disprove the existence of God, but that I veer towards believing that their is no god, or at least not in the form that major religions believe god to exist. i do take issue with the ideas that religion and science are opposing forces, or that it takes a 'primitive' mind to create god.

many, many great thinkers now and in past have been believers in god, and have used god as inspiration for their greatest works. also, primitivism is a bit of a myth. as somebody mentioned, the ancient world contains works that are a mystery to modern minds, and some assert that the key to phenomena such as electricity is found in ancient works. rather contradictorily, we are always developing new knowledges, and to suggest that we know best, and they knew less is a bit counter-intuitive if you consider the things that the future will bring, and the ideas that the future will quash.
Religion / Re: Atheists And Their Big Talk Against God. by Lita(f): 4:53pm On Jul 03, 2009
why can't one be an evolutionist and a christian? you could technically even be a christian agnostic. i know gay christians and muslims. i know muslim doctors. plenty of scientists believe in god and plenty argue that, like the imagery in revelations, creation is not a literal story. i remember when i was a christian (and a child, by the way) that i assumed that the big bang was the moment of light as described in the bible. consider pluralism. erecting creating unnecessary divisions does not make you more right. life's a little more complicated than that.
Romance / Re: Is It Ideal To Get Pregnant Before Marriage? by Lita(f): 4:21pm On Jul 03, 2009
of course not. how can you want to be responsible for another human being when you are not ready to share yourselves with even a spouse yet.
Family / Re: Why Men Beat Their Wife by Lita(f): 4:16pm On Jul 03, 2009
he has no respect for his mother
none for his wife
none for women
and not much for himself. don't marry a misogynist, its like being black and marrying a white racist.

Religion / Re: Homosexuality And Religion by Lita(f): 4:13pm On Jul 03, 2009
how many of you have ever met a gay or lesbian person. there is a certain amount of distance needed before this level of condemnation and horror can be heaped upon a group of people. many gay people i know do not have sex, so i wonder how much of this applies to them. there are always shades of grey, but i guess that's why i don't mess with religion.
