Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Nigeria Police To Recruit Additional 35,000 Personnel by MarkSole: 9:42pm On May 26, 2017
That means more uniformed predators to be unleashed on hapless Nigerians, in due course, if under-funding persists.

Jobs/Vacancies / Nigeria Police To Recruit Additional 35,000 Personnel by MarkSole: 9:40pm On May 26, 2017
Haliru Jika, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, says the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) will soon recruit an additional 35, 000 rank and file into the force.
Mr. Jika, representing Ganjuwa/Darazo Federal Constituency in Bauchi State on the ticket of APC, disclosed this while answering questions from journalist in Bauchi on Friday.
“We’ve just concluded the recruitment of 10, 000 police men and women of the Nigeria police Force in the country and we will soon kick start 35,000.
“The last 10,000 we did was 1,500 for officers, 1,000 for specialists – that is for mechanics, nurses and others.
“And then another 7, 500 for rank and file that is the normal conventional police which is the one you are seeing here working with us.
“And now these 35, 000 that we are going to start soon is going to be strictly rank and file because this country is grossly under-policed.
“It is part of our legislative agenda to strengthen the internal security of Nigeria, which is why we feel it is important to inject more policemen into the system for proper and effective policing of the country.
“That is why we decided to do the first 10,000 when President Muhammadu Buhari came to power and he gave a presidential directive to recruit 10,000.

“And now he has given another directive to recruit another 35,000.’’
Mr. Jika, who noted that the Nigeria police force was underfunded, said the legislative arm of government was working to enhance the welfare and morale of the personnel.
“What the Nigeria police are facing now is under-funding.
“So we are trying to work legislatively to improve the welfare and morale of the Nigeria Police.’’ (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Re: Power Can’t Improve Under Current Arrangement – Senators by MarkSole: 10:10pm On May 25, 2017
What we call over-billing, is the rip-off of the century. I now have a pre-paid meter, and currently spend between five to six thousand naira on public electricity, monthly. Prior to this time, I used to get an estimated bill, averaging thirty-five thousand naira, per month. In addition, I can bet that all the revenue accruable to the DISCOs do not reach the official coffers. Some of it is diverted to personal accounts. I am not guessing, know this for a fact.

Nairaland / General / Power Can’t Improve Under Current Arrangement – Senators by MarkSole: 10:09pm On May 25, 2017
By Ismail Mudashir & Simon Echewofun

The beleaguered power sector cannot improve under the current privatisation arrangement, senators said yesterday.
After painting a glooming picture of the sector during yesterday’s session many senators concluded the only solution was to reverse the privatisation sale.
They spoke during a debate on overbilling of electricity consumers by Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
Senator Dino Melaye, who sponsored the motion, called for the overhauling of the sector.
Chairman Committee on Privatisation, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (PDP, Bayelsa) said those who invested in the business thought it was like a company where they will make a lot of money.
He said they only had enough money to pay the government but lack the capacity to run a power sector company in a modern economy.
“They are technically bankrupt; unless we re-visit the entire privatisation process, unless we understand and dissect what went wrong, we will still get estimated billing.
“We have a catastrophe in our hands; there will be no light in Nigeria under the current structure.”
He added that the was “no hope in sight unless we revisit the process and try to understand what went wrong and bring in new players with capacity,” he said.
For his part, Vice chairmanCommittee on Power, Senator Bukar Mustapha (APC, Katsina) said the privatization of the power sector has failed in addressing the challenges.
He noted that Nigeria has an installed capacity of 12,522 megawatt but that the actually available megawatt is just over 4000.
“The privatisation model we have used has not worked. We are sitting on an emergency. Something has to be done drastically to address the situation, “he said.
Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary said the prayers on the motion should be stepped down pending the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Power on the privatization of the power sector.
Many electricity customers in Nigeria had expected instant turnaround of the facilities and quality of services described as rotten under the defunct PHCN after the privatisation over three years ago.
The federal government sold out 60 per cent stakes in about 17 power firms to private investors for US$2.525 billion and handed it over on November 1, 2013.
While the five Generation Companies (GenCos) were sold for $1.269bn, the 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) went for $1.256bn. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) being the third in the value chain was not privatised.
Powers behind the privatised firms
After the federal government concluded the privatisation transaction, former Vice President and Chairman, National Council on Power(NCP), Namadi Sambo handed over 60 per cent control of 10 DisCos and four GenCos to the investors on November 1, 2013. Sapele Power, Afam GenCo and the Kaduna DisCo were not taken over until later due to some legal issues.
Daily Trust found that most of the top drivers of the new private-led firms have political affiliations. Some others were not in power sector business investments earlier but got expatriates as technical partners.
Geregu I GenCo
It has Chief Femi Otedola, as Chairman of Amperion Ltd, the core investor. He is also the Chairman of Forte Oil. It has BSG Resources Ltd and Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company as its technical partners.
It planned to make a 50 per cent increase in the short to medium term to generate 600mw. However three years after, Geregu I hardly generates 400mw due to poor gas supply and other issues.
Transcorp Ughelli GenCo
Chairman of Transcorp/Woodrock Consortium, Mr Tony Elumelu acquired the 972mw capacity Ughelli Power firm at $300million. It planned an overhaul of generation capacity to over 1,070mw in five years but said it attained 600mw last year, after three years. Its last generation output was about 340mw this month due to gas supply, industry statistics revealed.
Kainji/Jebba Hydro GenCo
Col. Sani Bello (Rtd), frontier of Mainstream Energy Solutions got Kainji and Jebba GenCo for $170m. The Niger state investor, a former military administrator of Kano state, is also the chairman of MTN and Amni Oil and Gas,. It has Russian partner, RusHydro to acquire the plant. It said recently that it overhauled two turbines but it produces a combined energy of about 735mw and has 826mw capacity so far.

Owoseni to DPOs: Leave Lagos if you like bribe By : Precious Igbonwelundu and Boniface Ebere

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, on Tuesday warned Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state police command to shun bribery or leave the state.
Owoseni stated this during a lecture on Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officers at the Police Officers’ Wives’ Association (POWA) Hall, Ikeja.
He warned that the era of impunity and corruption among cops was gone, appealing to his subordinates to come for transfer if they would not want to play by the rules in the state.
He said: “I am tired of hearing about shooting or killing of innocent persons. No one has the right to take another man’s life. It is only God that has the right to take life.
“It is your responsibility as a DPO to know those who are collecting bribe under you. If you refuse to stop them, they will stop you from being a DPO.
“It is embarrassing to see policemen collecting bribes and chasing yahoo yahoo boys for a DPO. I would not cover any DPO. I will expose you. Just leave Lagos before I get to your station. I cannot share out of your misconduct. I will give your photographs and details to journalists to expose you.
“I am shocked to hear that some Area Commanders and DPOs are on the pay rolls of fraudsters. I am investigating. Just pray that I don’t get you. Just know that you are causing pains for taxpayers if you are intimidating them and collecting bribe from criminals.
“It is a curse to build a house with the money. The building would collapse on your head. Some of you even take people to the bank to collect money. If you train your children with the money, they won’t be useful to you.
“If those who were in the force before us bastardized it, we would not have the opportunity to be enlisted in the police. I am tired of pleading with police victims because you are doing what you are not supposed to do. Remember, one day, you are going to die and give account to your creator.
“Go back to your areas of jurisdiction and warn your men against brutality, indiscriminate use of handcuffs on pregnant women, elders and persons with disability.
“Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) should take note. I will not tolerate any act of indiscipline.
“Learn a lesson from DPO Ijeshatedo, who shot dead a fashion designer. He is in our custody and we are compiling charges against him. He would soon be arraigned in court.
“All DPOs in Ikorodu should use all resources within their disposals to fish out Badoo cult group that has been causing havoc in the community. I am giving you all 48 hours to decongest your cells. Nobody should be detained more than 48 hours. I will conduct checks on the cells.”

Is this structure, part of the master plan? If not, who was asleep, when this was happening? Is it he Lagos State Building Control Agency(LABSCA), or the Ministry of Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development(MPPUD)?

Nairaland / General / Ambode Issues Executive Order On Enforcement Of Lagos Master Plan By Gboyega Aki by MarkSole: 10:50am On May 14, 2017
The Lagos State Government has ordered an outright enforcement of the state’s original master plan, operative development plan as well as its model city plan in line with its town planning laws.
Likewise, the state government has frowned at the growing trend of converting residential buildings to commercial use.
It also emphasised the need to enforce its planning regulations to avert traffic congestion in all government schemes and other areas.
The state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, gave the new directives in an Executive Order No. EO/AA01/2017 he issued on January 23, 2017, warning that his administration would no longer accept distortion to the state’s master plan and model city plans.
As indicated in the executive order, the governor noted that every conversion of residential buildings contravened the state’s town planning laws and regulations, and flouted stipulated norms of parking, open spaces and public safety for building construction.
Ambode, therefore, warned against the ugly trend and physical planning aberrations, which he said had become prominent within the Government Residential Areas (GRAs) and other schemes.
He explained that the conversions, as confirmed, were done largely without approval from planning and building control authorities, which he said could undermine the megacity status of Lagos.
Consequently, the governor explained that the ugly trends “have resulted in the sub-division of plots, increase in density and floor area ratio, stress on existing infrastructure, traffic congestion, environmental pollution and invasion of privacy, among others.
“Other contraventions noted include developments without planning/renovation permits, non-compliance with setbacks and airspaces, utilisation of setbacks and incompatible uses, all which result in public complaints and disaffection.”
Ambode said the growing trends of non-conforming actions “are observed in, but are not limited to such government schemes as Ikeja GRA, Ogudu Scheme, Ogudu Scheme Phase II, Magodo Scheme I, Magodo Scheme II, Amuwo-Odofin Scheme, Lekki Scheme I, Lekki II, Abijo Scheme, Victoria Island and Ikoyi Scheme.”
Consequent upon physical planning aberration, the governor said he had received complaints on the incidents causing undue embarrassment to the government and apprehension to affected law-abiding residents in the affected areas.
He, therefore, restated the commitment of his administration “to a sustainable, business and tourism-friendly environment. It is now necessary to effectively enforce appropriate control and regulatory measures to stem the rate of illegal conversion of residential buildings to commercial use without jeopardising the economic growth of the state while bringing contraveners to compliance.”
The governor noted that the enforcement was to restore the operative development plans, master and model city plans, approval orders and guarantee the sanctity and sanity of the government schemes and residential areas as well as other locations in the state.
Ambode ordered that streets in Ikeja GRAs, which are to be reviewed from residential to mixed use in Isaac John and Joel Ogunnaike Streets should be formalised.

“Nigeria is on fire…the North is on fire. Nigeria is becoming like Somalia. The Somalianisation of Nigeria is taking place right now. I am an optimist as far as Nigeria is concerned…but in the last two months, I began to wonder, our house in on fire. We have to sit down and face the truth, get to the roots of our problem and find a solution to this problem. Our house (the north) is on fire. Those of us who call ourselves northerners, our house is on fire…let us not deceive ourselves. Let’s tell ourselves the truth and find solution to our problem. - General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma(Former Minister of Defence, Nigeria), www.channelstv.com.

General Danjuma, spoke those words in 2012. The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently his own version of that narrative, thus indicating that little has changed since then. The nation is ceaselessly calling for foreign investors, who seem to be wary of our environment. They probably know they cannot escape, diesel and diesel generators, ransom to kidnappers, and bribes at every turn.

Is Nigeria better than Somalia, power-wise, infrastructure-wise, health-wise, security-wise, etc. The Abuja International airport was reopened 2 days ago after several weeks of closure, and Ethiopian Airlines was the first to land its aircraft there. This is the same Ethiopia that cries to the world for help whenever drought comes calling. Even Rwanda has a functional airline and some Nigerian commercial banks, operate there.

Two weeks ago, I had to travel to Jos. It is a journey that could take up to 16 hours, inclusive of time spent at military check-points, in Plateau State. This time I did not get there until the following day. We had to spend the night in Abuja, so as not to run into the Bororos, on the roads in Nasarawa State. We did not have the privilege of being escorted by policemen, like the airline passengers, going from Kaduna to Abuja, and vice-versa. It was known that there are security challenges on that road(Kaduna - Abuja), but it was not addressed until, a special class of people, had to use it. Just today, it was reported that, the “degraded” Boko Haram got the better of soldiers, and there were fatalities.
Is Somalia reporting, meningitis? Is Somalia reporting, polio or lasssa fever? Nigeria and Somalia, what is different?

In my growing years, I was told to read newspapers to learn to write well. I however, may not be able to pass on such advice, considering today’s standards. This is what I read a few days ago:

“A witness, Rasaq Amao, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the telephone, said he was playing football inside the National Stadium when he saw smokes billowing into the sky.”

That came from a newspaper report titled, “Easter Tragedy: Seven killed, 19 injured in Lagos accidents.” They might explain this as a typographical error, but this is not the first time, this has happened. The same paper reported sometime back, on a fire at a warehouse as follows:

“The Fire Service was on top of the situation, but due to the combustible nature of the materials, there was nothing they could do.”

IGP deploys special squad to remove roadblocks on highways

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris has deployed Special X-Squad Teams across the country to commence with effect from Monday the removal of all forms of illegal blockage of highways and roads, and other obstructions.
Most of such blocks are created and operated by unlawful revenue/tax collectors, road transport unions, labour and trade related unions inhibiting vehicle movement and smooth passage of passengers and goods, and other road users across the country.
The Special X-Squad Teams deployed are under strict instructions to also arrest, investigate and prosecute any person or group of persons found committing this illegal act. It is unlawful and contrary to the laws for any individual, or group under any name to take laws into their hands and block any Road or Highway in full or any part of it under the guise of collection of Revenue/Tax or enforcement of the interests of such organisations.
For avoidance of doubt, the Taxes and Levies act, Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 section 2 (2) disallowed any person, including a Tax Authority from mounting a Road block in any part of the Federation for the purposes of collecting any Tax or Levy.
Consequently, the Nigeria Police advised the state and local governments, Boards of Internal Revenue service across the country, transport unions, labour and traders associations that it is against the law for any organization to create blockade and restrict free usage of rand highways anywhere in the country.

Nairaland / General / Apostle Suleman: Why The Truth Matters - Abimbola Adelakun by MarkSole: 3:27pm On Mar 19, 2017
A week ago, I touched on the ongoing controversy between Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries and a woman, Ms. Stephanie Otobo, who accused him of sexual impropriety and a breach of “marriage contract.” Since then, Apostle Suleman has turned out to be one of the luckiest holy men in the world. As the narrative is being shaped in several quarters, the Apostle is supposedly being persecuted by his state governor whom he antagonises. Suleman himself is cleverly milking spiritual cum political capital from his purported tale of harassment. While that seems probable, it is not a viable reason to hastily exonerate this pastor from the severe accusations Otobo made against him.
Like flies attracted to decaying flesh, Apostle Suleman has a former presidential aide in his beleaguered corner. Our wing-man, a “pastor” who himself was once embroiled in a scandal over his multiple identities, has grabbed the Twitter soapbox to proclaim the good works of the pastor. Sorry, but what is being contested here is not his charity, it is his integrity. If Apostle Suleman is truly guilty of Ms. Otobo’s charges, no good he has done for indigent people can erase the fact that he abused spiritual authority and privilege.

The dots are easy to connect to reveal why the Apostle, despite his alleged indiscretions, has zealots defending him and claiming that their questionable Christian values are under attack by some rampaging counter-forces. The Nigerians who have this kind of mindset are typically blinded in one eye by religious sentiment and in the other by ethnic parochialism. No matter how they spin this, the truth needs to be established and not merely presumed on some baseless sentiment. As a man of God faced with such a weighty accusation that impugns his credibility, Apostle Suleman himself needs a stronger defence than making silly prophecies about “marine spirits.”

Otobo stated that she travelled with the pastor on his evangelical ministrations and that he wired her sums of money. The police should cross-check both their passports to confirm this to be true. He should provide his passports and his bank details to prove her wrong.
There are important reasons the unflinching innocence of Apostle Suleman is an imperative. First is the fact that he heads an organisation gifted a non-profit status. If it was true that he was bestowing the money he made in church on women with whom he had sexual relationships, then he should be penalised and his tax-free status revoked. It is morally and legally wrong for a pastor to collect the seed offering from people who use the money as a “point of contact” for their miracles and lavish it on women who satisfy his lust.

No matter what pastors say about “God’s money,” the fact remains that financial accountability is essential. God’s money is not a “no-go area” and corruption is corruption, no matter where it takes place. We cannot complain about corruption in the government and justify corruption in the Church.

The establishment of Apostle Suleman’s innocence is also necessary because Christianity, by its very nature, imposes an obligation of self-abnegation and self-sacrifice on its adherents, especially the leadership. A man is a man of God not because he can prophesy the death of a state governor, but because he practises a level of self-denial and self-discipline that opens him up to spiritual power and experiences. To be a man of God goes beyond being called “Papa” or “Daddy in the Lord;” it is about self-crucifixion, a suppression of desires and a daily subjection of the flesh to certain ascetic and monastic practices.

The legitimacy of men of God revolves around the belief that in their private spaces, they pray longer and study the Bible with far more commitment than lay members. We take it for granted that they practise certain spiritual exercises and as a result, they claim certain privileges from the public. A pastor that lacks libidinal restraint is therefore useless, because it means he is corruptible and untrustworthy.
There is no question of whether he is accountable to only his church members, he also owes the public a measure of accountability. Spirituality is not sports, but let me relate the hard work of being a pastor to athleticism. Athletes are some of the highest paid people in the world because they take their bodies through a disciplinary regime so arduous regular humans cannot attempt them. They do this to win a race or a game and they get heavily compensated. When we find out that they have not worked hard enough and they merely used performance enhancers, they are stripped of their credit. The same ethics go for men of God. They must discipline themselves; otherwise, they have no moral right to speak for God or claim benefits in His name. Nigerians need to learn to stop defending their pastors’ excesses and learn to demand accountability from them.

Some years ago, I interviewed a woman in Ibadan. The woman, a retail seller of soft drinks, told me about a pastor who had prescribed a fasting and prayer session for his flock but entered her shop at 11am on the first day of the programme to buy a bottle of a popular malt drink! She was not a member of his church, but she attended services occasionally and so she knew him. The woman told me she watched the pastor drink and drain the bottle. After he left, she called the church members she knew and told them to go break their fast since the pastor himself had broken his. I asked her why she did not challenge him and she replied that the phrase, “Man of God” means “the man” comes before “the God.” Pastors are just human like us, she said.

I found her rationalisation both fascinating and upsetting. How could she be so undemanding of a man that imposed on others a spiritual procedure he himself could not adhere to? The kind of laissez faire attitude to religious moral standards she exhibited is an aspect of the Nigerian religion that confuses me. Why was she quick to overlook the pastor’s hypocrisy and lack of self-discipline to offer an excuse for him? Is that not the same way Nigerians quickly rally around the same politicians who have robbed them of their national patrimony? Why are Nigerians hell-bent on protecting the virtues of their leaders, despite their sins?

In Western countries, pastors like Bishop Eddie Long, Ted Haggard, and Jim Bakker have all had cases of sexual indiscretions. When they were exposed, they apologised and recused themselves from the altar while they dealt with their sins.
Why is Nigeria different? Why do our pastors resort to “strong head” when challenged on their sins? Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA promised to give us a “robust reply.” He has since left the public in abeyance with his elusiveness. What is it about the Nigerian character that makes penance for betrayal of public confidence a non-starter?

From the secular to the sacred realm, people who are caught in sin merely deny and assert their tainted moral authority. A former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, returned from prison recently. The same man who confessed to all his crimes in the UK court now insists he was innocent and was only a victim of political machinations. From pastors to politicians, the story is the same: I didn’t do it, I must have been set up by someone…

Nigerians should stop making excuses for their spiritual and political leaders and let them take responsibility for their actions. Faith practices are a powerful historical and cultural force that shapes political sphere and if, as a society, we want a better political system, we should start with the religious sphere.
The Punch

What do we need the police for? If it is true that Apostle Suleman said, Ms Stephanie Otobo is just a cheap prostitute, that he was trying to help, then we have a few answers, already. Firstly, Apostle Suleman knows Ms Otobo. Secondly, he has met with her. Thirdly, he gave her financial support. It is now left for Ms Otobo to publish her bank statement(s). We can then identify the lodgements/transfers made by Apostle Suleman, and then judge how cheap, “the cheap prostitute” really is.

The fund-raising event in Abeokuta May 14 where over N6 billion was realised towards Obasanjo's presidential library has been widely condemned as public extortion
The launching of the N7 billion Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library, OOPL, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, May 14, has continued to generate many questions. About N6 billion was raised from private donors including the multinational oil companies which contributed $20 million, about N2 billion and 36 state governors donating N10 million each while Ogun State alone donated N100 million and the organised private sector doling out the larger share of the fund. Wole Soyinka, Nobel Laureate described it as executive extortion. The criticism against the launching was not targeted at the project which was believed to be a laudable vision by the president, but the ways in which the fund were donated showed that the donors had no option than to dance to the demand of the president.
Many Nigerians have wondered if it was not against the tide of the anti-corruption crusade of the federal government for state governors to dip hands into the treasury of the state and donate public funds to a private project. Wole Soyinka, professor and Nobel laureate, said the fund -raiser contradicted the president's anti-corruption crusade.
Newswatch gathered that many of those who donated has to do so to avoid witch-hunting by the powers that be. The donation was likened by some to the power play between the police who always extort money from motorist. The motorist, it is believed would give out the mandatory N20 to avoid any trouble with the police. .......................................................................................................

Properties / Whose Is This? by MarkSole: 6:22pm On Mar 07, 2017
There is this massive structure, under construction somewhere in Surulere, Lagos. Ordinarily, the Physical Planning authorities in Lagos State would not allow such a building, on a plot of land less than 1000 sq. metres. This one however, is being built in broad-daylight, without any hindrance, on a plot that is about 500 sq. metres. That piece of land used to contain a house meant for a family of 6 to 8 people, now see what is happening there. Floor upon floor upon floor. Is this a case of, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal”?

Politics / Babangida Greets Obasanjo At 80 by MarkSole: 12:10am On Mar 07, 2017
Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida took out a full page in the Sunday Sun to greet Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on his 80th birthday. The transcript of that message is as follows:
My Oga,
At 80, you celebrate a life of fulfilment,
A life of selfless service to our dear nation,
A life of trials and tribulations, of pains and anguish, in the course of safeguarding the unity and oneness of Nigeria.

Your life is a moving story of a destiny child, whose narrative Symbolizes the awesome power of Almighty God, in seeing you through life and the verisimilitudes of our everyday engagement.

You have remained the essential General from when you commanded the troops, till date when you have continued to offer voice to strengthen public discourse and sustain our unity of purpose.

A General of all times with the credo of discipline and traits of a leader, detribalized in orientation and nationalistic in service.

At 80, you are still bubbling with verve and energy;
With the gusto of never-say-die spirit of a gentleman officer;
Bold, courageous, determined, resilience and perseverance.

At old age you still resonate the persona that defined your leadership in those good old days, you exude the candour of a trained mind, who is imbued with the patriotic theme, nurtured to defend the country, and sworn to uphold its unity.

That you are bubbling in good health is God’s abiding grace, blessing, mercy and compassion which calls for celebration. It is a life full of achievements in service to our motherland.

On behalf of Aisha, Muhammad, Aminu and Halima, I wish to congratulate you on this celebration of a milestone age. The age of reason, of wisdom, of commonsense, and elder statesmanship.

May the Almighty God continue to grant you good health, Long life and sound mind as you soldier on

Happy Celebrations! Happy Birthday!!
Yours Sincerely, SG
Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, GCFR

Sometime in August 2011, Obasanjo called IBB a fool at 70. Obasanjo was reacting to an earlier statement by IBB, to the effect that Obasanjo should account for the $16 billion his government spent on power projects in Nigeria.
“Its unlike Babangida. But if Babangida has decided on becoming a septugenarian, that he will be a fool, I think one should probably do what the bible says, in Proverbs chapter 26; verse 4. It says don’t answer a fool, because you may also become like him. When you go to the same Proverbs chapter 26; verse 5, it says, answer a fool so he will not think he’s a wise man. So, I am now torn between which of the two verses I should follow in this respect.”-General Olusegun Obasanjo, The Punch, August 2011.

“We do not want to believe that he(Obasanjo) truly said that. But if it is true that he did say that, Nigerians know who the greatest fool is. For a man who cannot possibly tell his true age one may excuse his present outburst; as the effusions of a witless comedian.”-Mr Kassim Afegbua, (media aide to General Babangida), The Punch, August 2011.

Nairaland / General / Re: Change Should Begin At Ptad by MarkSole: 4:30pm On Feb 26, 2017
PTAD has an office in Abuja, but not in Jos or Minna. If the fellows in these 2 locations cannot make phone contact, the option left is to travel to Abuja. They may not be capable of travelling alone. That is, they need to be accompanied by an escort. This has its cost implications, amongst others.
Nairaland / General / Change Should Begin At Ptad by MarkSole: 12:53am On Feb 26, 2017
PTAD in full, is Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate. It is an agency established by the Federal government of Nigeria to “address the numerous pensioners’ complaints that bother on issues such as non-payment of monthly pension, short payment of pension and gratuity, removal of name on pension payment voucher, non-payment of harmonized pension arrears, irregular payment of federal pensions and non receipt of pension after retirement, etc”.

They are so very people-friendly at PTAD, they ignore phone calls and emails, and generally do as they please. It is this attitude that made Nigeria loose Songhai Farms to La République du Bénin. A Catholic Dominican priest, Father Godfrey Nzamujo, had returned to Nigeria, from the US to set up Songhai Farms. He applied for land, and waited 3 months without response. He then headed for Bénin, where he was given land within 3 weeks, or was it 3 days. At least one state governor, has sent youths there for agric training. Imagine leaving the largest economy in Africa, for training in the tiny nation, of Bénin.
Are retiree septuagenarians and octogenarians, expected to camp at the offices of PTAD whenever complaints arise? Who said, change should begins with me? I THINK “CHANGE” SHOULD BEGIN HERE, SPEEDILY. BARRISTER (MRS) SHARON IKEAZOR, PLEASE TAKE NOTE.

Politics / At N500 To A Dollar The End Is Nigh By KEN UGBECHIE by MarkSole: 1:00am On Feb 13, 2017
The government of President Muhammadu Buhari has made history. It has dragged the naira, at last, to its Golgotha. At N500 to a dollar in the parallel market, the naira is dead. But it was an avoidable death. Successive Nigerian governments never showed any concern about the wellness of the local currency. This is because no Nigerian leader, military or civilian, was ever prepared to lead. They chanced into office either through the barrel of the gun or by election grifting.
They lacked vision so they could not even plan for tomorrow. But if we can excuse the perfidy in the military era, we cannot make excuse for those leaders in the democratic agora. Obasanjo government wasted the fortunes of the nation in the most grotesque manner. In full consciousness he and his team plundered the national till to the extent that he was not ashamed to go public with his then deputy, Atiku Abubakar, with details of how they feasted on the account of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF).
The Umaru Yar’adua era was the period Nigeria relapsed into seizure.
The nation merely gasped for breath. The incompetence of Yar’adua coupled with his ill-health prepared the stage for mindless looting which out of sentiment, nobody is talking about today. The cultic grip on a dying Yar’adua by a small cabal around him ensured that the nation had no dream, did not stir nor dare hence did not win. Nigeria, as a nation, was left with the routine of sleeping and waking.
Yar’adua’s successor, Goodluck Jonathan, who shares the same badge of incompetence with his predecessor rather than buck the trend, rode on the same sordid tide of inefficiency. Jonathan like Yar’adua, like Shehu Shagari, was a weak leader. His weakness was not on account of ill-health. It was just the lot of a man who refused to be a man or was incapable of being one. So, under his watch, looting of public treasury became a schizophrenic pastime. Jonathan is a good guy but good guys do not make good leaders. He lacked shrewdness and the courage to dream and to dare.
Yet, in all of these governments life was still bearable. Nigerians got by, and still managed a wry smile, a little laughter. But the Buhari government has killed laughter and joy. So far, it is the worst government ever in Nigeria’s history. The hardship is just too much to bear. Worst of it all, the government lacks the vision and drive to pull the nation through. How can a member of OPEC cartel not have kerosene and cooking gas for her citizens to cook? Simply benumbing!
For good reason, Buhari came to power an angry man. The state of the nation should make a reasonable Nigerian angry. That’s also why he got the people’s vote. He campaigned with good intentions; he said corruption must be killed; he said Nigeria deserves better than she is getting. Very good, I agree. But the same Buhari failed to review his own leadership credential; he failed to notice that he cannot even lead a local government in the 21st century. First, he is not a good planner; he is not a dreamer; he lacks drive and he is imprisoned by his own innate inability to trust others. Buhari, very obvious now, is not a risk-taker; he is a poor portrait of entrepreneurship. A good leader is a risk-taker; an entrepreneur, whether as social entrepreneur or otherwise.
This explains why he has dragged Nigeria into a hellhole, into a burrow of sorrow. Buhari’s incompetence is made manifest in his skewed appointments and in the calibre of men and women he appointed into offices. It shows also in the style of appointment. The long delay in filling his cabinet also contributed to the mix of ineptitude that dogs his administration. No leader stays for six months without a cabinet; that is six months of no vision, no goal, no activity. That’s too long a time in the life of any economy. The horrendous failure of the Buhari government is not on account of falling prices of crude oil. Those who put up such illogic are either mentally indolent or wallow in the cesspit of unreason. Lee Kuan Yew did not build modern Singapore from the ruins of war with oil money; Jerry Rawlings did not unclasp Ghana from the grip of despair with oil money. Ghana, once a pariah nation – no friends, avoided by Nigeria and other nations – has today become the second home, even a better home for Nigerians and multinationals frustrated out of Nigeria by incompetent leaderships. Need I mention the story of tiny Botswana? The country once ranked among the poorest of the poor is today one of Africa’s fastest growing economies and stable democracies with comparatively better infrastructure and enviable educational system that has put her universities ahead of Nigerian universities in global ranking. Such revival was made possible because the leadership of Seretse Khama Ian Khama in recent years innovatively husbanded his no-nonsense style of leadership into real productivity and the indicators are there to show for his effort.
President Buhari can still turn things around, but first, he must do a few quick fixes. The President must halt the dollar racket. There is a virile forex racket orchestrated by banks cashing in on the regulatory weakness of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The President also contributed to this forex scam when he created a ridiculously low exchange rate of N197 to a dollar for pilgrims travelling to Jerusalem or Mecca. People mop up dollar from CBN at this rate and rush to black market to make a kill. This government must distinguish itself from previous governments by halting forthwith the subsidy on religious pilgrimage. Why would the government subsidise religious voyage to anywhere when the same government has starved local manufacturers of dollar to import raw materials and machinery.
The President needs to take a second and critical look into the deceit in the banking system. They are the ones manipulating the forex market. They create scarcity of dollar for the primary sector while selling same in the black market where they triple the profit. The economics of asking Nigerians to stop patronising foreign goods has not worked and is not working because even Mr. President still holidays in London and patronises hospitals abroad. At the root of the crashing naira at foreign exchange market is a cabal in the banking system that keeps profiting from the multiple exchange rates created by the government for different occasions some as ridiculous as subsidizing (holy?) pilgrimages that do little to make us any holier than we are. Naira is crashing not because crude oil price has dropped, no! It is crashing because we have not prudently managed the little that we have.
Again, the President must deliberately loosen up by creating a window for multinationals to repatriate their profit to their home countries. Frustrating them out of the country worsens the situation because they simply move to a neighbouring country, build their factory there, create jobs and wealth there while still making their sales in Nigeria.
The newly formed task force to revive the economy should advise the President to also ensure that local debts are serviced just so money will circulate. The economy is suffocating and all the President needs do is to be upbeat not uptight. For too long, many parastatals functioned without the full complement of their boards. Where there is no board, no management tender board meeting holds, no payments are made and no new contracts are awarded hence no money in circulation. Holding in does not help any economy, holding out does. Mr President should hold out, just a little bit, otherwise the naira dieth.

Nairaland / General / RRS Vehicle Crashes Into Concrete Median by MarkSole: 12:50am On Jan 18, 2017
A Chevrolet vehicle belonging to the RRS(Rapid Response Squad), crashed into the concrete median, just before daybreak. This happened on a popular street in, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria. It was carrying plate number RRS 114 LA. It is likely to have been on top speed, because the flashlight that usually sits on the roof, landed on the ground behind the car, as following the impact. The air-bags must have prevented serious injury, to the occupants. It was a lone car accident.

Nairaland / General / Fashola, The Gods Are Not To Blame! - Abimbola Adelakun by MarkSole: 10:07pm On Dec 06, 2016
In his convocation speech at the University of Benin last week, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, remarked that, “Sango is the god of lightning and thunder, but all the sacrifices made to Sango have not generated one kilowatt of electric power.” Let me make it clear that I understand the point Fashola was making within the context of the entire speech but his choice of which god to denigrate is a cowardly decision. Fashola could have referred to the gods that dominate Nigeria’s public space – the Christian and Muslim – and risk being ripped into shreds by their adherents. Instead, he reaches for a marginal god, one that has already been endlessly disparaged in popular culture by a tribe of ignoramuses. Sango does not deserve such a gratuitous insult from a national public official.
Why allude to Sango, whom no public official sacrifices to (at least publicly) when both the Christian and Muslim adherents are the higher consumers of public resources? Sango’s shrine is not the largest in the country, competing with his peers to homogenise the public sphere; Sango is not the one we worship in business centres that have now been converted to religious houses; Sango does not have enough followers who can contend for their representative to be appointed to public office. Nobody gets forex subsidy to visit Sango’s shrine but Nigerian Christians and Muslims have had no qualms using public money to fund their pilgrimages. Why not take down the actual sources of religiosity that impede social progress rather than use Sango as a rhetorical diversion?
Besides, Sango worshippers are not simple-minded dolts who expect him to bequeath them electricity. The Greeks, for instance, see Apollo as the god of Music but European/western culture did not wait for him to write their classic music scores. They also take Bacchus as the god of wine but they do not chide him for not running a winery. Diana is the goddess of hunting while Athena is the goddess of intellection but who actually sacrifices to them so they can give anything back? These are mythological figures around whom people build a cultural economy and from there enrich their imagination. We see how much this has benefited mankind and we should be borrowing ideas from there, not running down our indigenous mythology.

The Punch

While governing Lagos State, mind-boggling figures were spent on a website for his office(N78million) & the car-park of his official residence(N600million). He declared himself free of any impropriety, on the grounds that, he neither negotiated those contracts, nor signed the cheques. Now he’s talking about Sango. Is Sango running the power ministry with him? He should be delivering improved power supply, not waiting for Sango’s response to the sacrifice, of his adherents.
