There was a mild drama when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) rejected Berekete Family radio’s intervention to end the ongoing strike.
ASUU has been on strike since February and all efforts to make lecturers return to the classrooms have not yielded results.

On Saturday morning, host of the radio programme, Ahmad Isah, popularly known as Ordinary President, invited ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, and his team, to explain to Nigerians the perennial problems and state why the union is still on strike.

Isah also said he had set up a special intervention bank account domiciled in TAJ Bank to raise funds for the union, with a view to ending the strike.

Apparently to convince ASUU to buy into the idea of the intervention, Isah publicly showed the N50 million cash donated by Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State.


Immediately the money was displayed, ASUU President frowned at the development, saying they should not be associated with such.

At that point, Isah threatened to discontinue the intervention and many Nigerians who phoned in during the programme described ASUU as ”insensitive”.

Nigerian presidential candidates; Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are among dignitaries invited to grace an event to pay tributes to the late MKO Abiola on June 12.
Anthony Kila, chairman of the event’s organising committee, announced this in a statement on Friday.

On June 12, 1993, Abiola was declared winner of the presidential election.

The election was, however, annulled by the then military government, sparking widespread demonstrations across the country.

According to the statement, the event, which will be hosted at MKO Abiola family compound in Lagos State named as the Nigeria’s Democracy Centre, is aimed complimenting the official recognition of June 12 by the government as Nigeria’s Democracy Day arising from the martyrdom of MKO Abiola.



The statement added that the event would be a hybrid of virtual and physical attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“To this end, the historic event is expected to witness prayers, tributes, roll Calls of Honour to Heroes and Heroines of Nigeria’s Democracy and the Laying of Wreath of Honour in memory of the Martyrdom of MKO Abiola, who sacrificed his precious life to defend the mandate of the Nigerian people freely given to him on June 12, 1993 in birthing the current Democratic rule in Nigeria.

As the deadline for the conduct of political party primaries elapsed on Thursday, June 9, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reminded political parties not to submit candidates without running mates, saying such nominations would outrightly be declared invalid.



The chairman of the electoral commission, Mahmood Yakubu, said this at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, in Abuja on Thursday.



Yakubu stressed that candidates who did not emerge through democratic nomination processes would also not be accepted.



On the nomination process, Yakubu said



“Turning to the nomination of candidates by political parties for the 2023 general election, all primaries end on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

For the next one week from June 10, 2022, all political parties are required to submit their list of candidates for national elections (presidential/vice presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives) latest by Friday, June 17, 2022.

For state elections (governorship/deputy governorship and State Houses of Assembly), the list of candidates shall be uploaded from July 1 to 15, 2022, as already provided in the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general election already released by the commission.

All political parties are required to upload the details of their candidates for each constituency to the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal, ICNP. To achieve this objective, four officials recommended by each of the 18 political parties were trained on the procedure for uploading the nomination forms to the dedicated web portal. Confidential Access Codes to the portal have already been given to each Political Party to facilitate the uploading of its nominations.

For emphasis, the Commission wishes to remind Political Parties that only the names of candidates that emerged from democratic primaries as provided by Sec. 84 of the Electoral Act 2022 shall be submitted to the Commission.

Similarly, the list of all Presidential and Governorship candidates must be accompanied by the names of their running mates (i.e. Vice Presidential and Deputy Governorship candidates) without which the nomination is invalid. All nominations must be uploaded to the portal on/or before the deadlines.

The portal will automatically shut down at 6.00pm (1800hrs) on Friday 17th June 2022 for national elections and 6.00pm (1800hrs) on Friday 15th July 2022 for State elections. With this innovation, the Commission has eliminated the physical interface between party officials and INEC staff for the purpose of submitting the list of candidates for the 2023 General Election.

A Nomination Centre has been set up here at the Commission’s Headquarters to receive and process all nominations by political parties, including dedicated telephone lines to serve as Help Desk for any Party that may need assistance. In our avowed commitment to openness and transparency of the process, the media will be invited to the Nomination Center so that Nigerians will see our level of preparedness for the exercise”.

AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 2 - 1 to hand coach Jose Peseiro his first win
The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Sierra Leone 2-1 in the first fixture of their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series on Thursday evening, June, 9.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has ratified the Labour Party’s leadership structure, recognising officials loyal to presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Factions of the Labour Party have rejected Mr Obi as the consensus presidential candidate, nominating other aspirants as the flag bearer.

Checks by Peoples Gazette on INEC’s official website showed that Julius Abure and Umar Farouk were recognised as the Labour Party’s national chairman and secretary; Akingbade Oyelakin as the national legal adviser.

A former deputy national chairman of the party, Calistus Okafor, claiming to be the party’s chair, had sued Messrs Abure, Farouk and Oyelakin, declaring their leadership illegal. But the defendants insisted they were elected chairman and secretary at a party conference in Benin in March 2021.

Last week, Mr Okafor filed an ex parte application praying the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to declare him the lawful chairman of the party.

Mr Okafor supports a presidential aspirant EJude Ezenwafor as the party’s candidate. He described him as “a man of integrity,” affirmed “to be the presidential candidate of the Labour Party come 2023.”

Meanwhile, another faction is rooting for the candidacy of Sampson Charles Uchenna as the party’s presidential flag bearer.

Six persons were reportedly shot dead by suspected bandits in Ondo town, Ondo state on Wednesday night.

This is coming three days after 40 worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, were killed by suspected terrorists during a Catholic mass

Police source reported that the bandit stormed Sabi area in Ondo town on motorcycles and shot the victims at close range.

Reports has it that the victims were road side traders in the town.

The bandits reportedly robbed residents of the area before they took off.

Another source said that the gunmen were armed robbers who attempted to rob residence and traders in the area

A leading All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, has denied endorsing a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Tinubu said the text message being circulated at the Eagles Square, the venue of APC Special Convention, was false.

He noted that the text messages were the handiwork of shameless, desperate, and misguided individuals.

Tinubu’s denial was contained in a statement signed by his Media Office, and posted on his verified Twitter handle.

The message reads:

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed victory against Russia as the country in address marking 100 days since Russian invasion, on Friday, June 3.



Since the war started, thousands of people have been killed, while millions have fled as Russian President Vladimir Putin's troops try to take over the country.


Russia’s advance has been slowed by a fierce Ukrainian resistance supported by Western military supply support which has repelled them from around the capital and forced Moscow to shift its aims towards capturing the east.

Controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged the federal government to treat Fulani herders and other aggrieved groups as Niger Delta militants.
Gumi made the observation on Wednesday at the ‘Pastoralists and Fulbe Security Conference’ held in Abuja.

The event themed ‘Exploring the contemporary security challenges facing pastoralists and Fulbe in Nigeria’ was jointly organised by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and northern consensus movement (NCM).

Tanko Sabo, a national delegate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Kaduna, returned to his local government to share the money he made from the presidential primaries.



Sabo, who represented Sanga LGA at the primaries over the weekend, returned with cash for members of his local government.



He said he spent the money he made from elections on the underprivileged in his community.



During the campaign to be selected as a delegate, Sabo had promised to give back whatever monetary benefits he made to the community if elected.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Wednesday rejected the terrorism tag by the Nigerian Government.
Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, accused the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerian Army of deliberately attempting to assassinate the character of its members.


Powerful said immigrations and police officers across the world could attest to the fact that members of the separatist group are not terrorists and criminals.

He stated this in his statement to mark May 30, a day set aside for Biafra Remembrance Day.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a presidential candidate, has promised to rehabilitate Bakassi’s displaced people if elected.
He made the promise on Wednesday in Calabar, where he was meeting with delegates ahead of the All Progressives Congress’s upcoming presidential primary.


“We will create jobs, we will rehabilitate those who have been displaced in Bakassi,” Tinubu said, adding that he will make Calabar port operational.

Tinubu, who arrived with an entourage that included Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, told the delegates to vote for success and progress and to inquire about his achievements in Lagos.

Former Borno governor Hashim Shettima stated that equity, justice, and fairness demand that power be transferred to the south, and that Tinubu is deserving of the position because he has made significant sacrifices to ensure the survival of democracy.

The source, Premium Times has obtained details of how the various state delegates voted at Saturday’s Special National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.

The primary produced former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the opposition party for the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku polled 371 votes from the 767 accredited candidates to edge his closest opponent, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who polled 237 votes.

Last-minute withdrawal by Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, swung the contest in favour of Atiku as delegates from Mr Tambuwal’s North-West stronghold and from other states where delegates had pledged their support to him all turned their votes to Atiku.

Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has disclosed that the state’s health sector needs over 200 new doctors to effectively manage the primary healthcare centres across the state.

Obaseki disclosed this on Monday when he received the new executives of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the state who were on a courtesy visit to his office.

“We need more than 200 new doctors in the system, who will be in the community to take charge of the Primary Healthcare Centres across the state and must be motivated and encouraged to stay here,” he said.
The governor noted that his administration’s focus is on how to produce more doctors by strengthening the basic education system and giving quality education to produce more doctors for the state.

Obaseki called for doctors’ collaboration to sustain reforms in the healthcare sector, assuring a resilient and equitable system to deliver efficient, quality and affordable healthcare services to the Edo people.

He said he is pursuing a holistic reform in the sector and putting in place mechanisms to discourage manpower for healthcare delivery from leaving the country.

“We need more doctors, particularly with the way the doctors are travelling out of the country in search of greener pastures. What we need is to strengthen the institutions that produce doctors. We are strengthening our educational system to produce more doctors,” Obaseki said.

Catholic bishop of Ekwulobia, Anambra state, Peter Okpaleke has been named as one of the 21 new cardinals of the Catholic Church by Pope Francis.

The announcement was made on Sunday May 29, at the conclusion of the Regina Coeli, a prayer said by Catholics. In the list of new cardinals, eight are from Europe, six from Asia, two from Africa, one from North America, and four from Central and Latin America.

The college of cardinals is a body of senior priests who support the pope in overseeing the affairs of the church, and they also vote during papal elections.

Pope Francis said he will hold a consistory (a meeting of the council of cardinals) on the new cardinals on August 27, and will also meet with the new cardinals on the same day for discussions on church matters.


The Pope was quoted saying;

“On Saturday, 27 August, I will hold a consistory for the creation of new cardinals. Let us pray that they will help me in my mission as bishop of Rome for the good of all God’s people.”

A video circulating online shows the moment two ladies were playfully trying to confirm if he is indeed a woman as he claims or still a man.

They got up close and personal with the drag queen and made several attempts to check whether he has the features of a man.

Jubril Ahmed, the husband of the pregnant woman killed along with her four children by unknown gunmen in Anambra state over the weekend, has said that he is devastated by the unfortunate incident.



Jubril who works as a security guard in Anambra State told Daily Trust that his wife was nine months pregnant and the family was expecting a new baby within the week when they were killed.

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, former Minister of State for Education, says the north would support the bid for a south-east presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) if the south-west hopefuls quit the race.

Nwajiuba, who is one of the presidential hopefuls of the ruling party, said in the interest of national justice and fairness, the south-east should produce the next president of Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has insisted that its members won’t resume work despite the Federal Government’s payment of minimum wage arrears.

This [was contained in a circular by the University of Lagos branch of the union titled, ‘Payment of minimum wage arrears’.



The chairman of UNILAG ASUU, Dele Ashiru, confirmed the authenticity of the circular to The PUNCH on Saturday.



Ashiru described the arrears payment as “long-overdue”, saying that the core demands of ASUU have not been met.

The circular read, “The leadership of our Branch has been inundated with calls concerning the recent payment of the long-overdue arrears of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage.

“Our members are reminded that this is not one of the core demands upon which the ongoing strike action is premised.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the demands of our Union are the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, abrogation of the fraudulent and corrupt IPPIS scheme and the deployment of UTAS, payment of promotion arrears, the proliferation of State Universities and governance issues amongst others.
