BY Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief ABUJA — The first proposed Islamic bank in Nigeria, Jaiz Bank, will operate as a regional bank, based in Northern Nigeria. Jaiz Chairman, Alhaji Umaru Abdul Mutallab, told shareholders at the bank’s Annual General Meeting in Abuja, yesterday, that it had raised N6.5 billion to be able to operate as a regional bank under the recently released framework of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. A specialised regional bank requires N 5 billion capital to operate. He said: “The regulatory framework recently released by the CBN re-enforces the concept of specialised banks recognised by the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act with a lower share capital base. Your company will consequently operate as a specialised bank. “The framework equally allows for the operation of regional and national banks within the framework of specialised non-interest banking. In his remarks, Rev. Emmanuel Ikwe of Emmanuel Evangelical Church, who is also a shareholders solidarity activist, said Christians should not panic over Islamic banking. “There is no need to panic over Islamic banking,” said Ikwe , who was Chief of Air Staff under the Gen. Yakubu Gowon regime. According to him, shylock Nigerian bankers who give various excuses for not giving loans or give loans at rates that are very unfriendly would have a major competitor in the Islamic bank. “When there is someone who will give me a loan at no interest, why won’t I do business with him? I will not leave such a bank and go to another bank that will give me a loan and charge 30 per cent interest and include other hidden charges. To me this is business”, he said. Jaiz ‘s board of directors consist of Alh Mutallab as Chairman, Alh Abdullateef Adegbite, Alh. Aminu Dantata, Dr. Rilwanu Lukman, Alh Aliko Dangote, Group Cat. Usman Jibrin, rtd, Mallam Falalu Bello, Amb. Ibrahim Yerima Abdullahi, Alh. Sani Anka and Mall. Nafiu Baba-Ahmed. The rest are: alh Tajuddeen Dantata, Alh. Ibrahim Adamu Babangida, Alh. Sarki Gwarzo, Amb. Bunu Sheriff Musa, Alh. Umaru Kwairanga, Mr. Mahbub ul Alam and Alh. Mustapha Binde who is Managing Diector. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/08/islamic-banking-only-for-north-mutallab/ |

sensible Nigerians knew fro abinitio that MEND has nothing to do with IBB (Independent Bomb Blast), Maradona just succeeded in letting us know how cunning he can be. Fellow Nigerians, i'm not telling you to vote for GEJ but i urge you to vote for your candidate that you believe can take us to the next level. Those of us in diaspora that have seen the dividends of real democracy should sensitize us through proper channels. Our biggest woe as a nation is ignorance, i say free education at all levels for all. |

see a foolish general reasoning, he admitted that PDP is a rigging power house where a candidate is pre-anointed and every other candidates for fools errand. I'm not a fan of GJ but i think folks like IBB, Atiku and them RTD Generals should give 9ja a break and give younger folks chance. I miss OBJ, he should have shut IBB mouth the usual way, he got lots of skeletons in his cardboard, lots of files to look into; Dele Giwa, oil windfall money etc |

23 bakeries fail hygiene test in Aba April 2, 2010 02:35AM http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Home/5548946-146/23_bakeries_fail_hygiene_test_in.csp The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Abia State has declared 23 bakeries as unwholesome for failing to meet its Good Hygiene Practice (GHP). The deputy director of the agency in the state, Kehinde Mamudu, said the agency had issued compliance directives to the affected bakeries. He said any bakery that violated the directive would face outright closure or withdrawal of approval by the agency. Mr. Mamudu said the agency had inspected 30 out of the 200 registered bakeries in the state to ascertain the environmental status of their facilities. He expressed concern with the poor hygienic conditions in which the bakeries were operating after obtaining their approval from the agency. |

Jonathan warns Ghadaffi over comments on Nigeria By Elizabeth Archibong April 1, 2010 12:09PM Acting president, Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday in Abuja warned African leaders to be diplomatic when making statements about other nations. He said this while receiving the Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who was visiting to broker peace between Nigeria and Libya over statements by the Libyan leader, Muammar Ghaddafi that Nigeria should break up. Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf was received at the presidential villa at about 5pm yesterday by Mr. Jonathan and his protocol team, aides as well the National Security Adviser, Aliyu Gusau and the Secretary to the government of the Federation, Yayale Ahmed. She came with a special envoy from the Libyan government which was led by Muhammed Sherif, Secretary General of World Islamic Call Society based in Tripoli. Others present were Rafa Al-Madani, the executive secretary of Forum for Arab-African Non Governmental Organisation and three Embassy staff in Nigeria. Speaking to journalists after the closed door meeting between both presidents and their aides, Ima Niboro, the special adviser to the acting president on media, said the meeting was to create a rapport between the two countries and to mend fences. "It is actually an initiative on her part to broker rapprochement between Nigeria and Libya; so she came with two special envoys from the president of Libya, President Ghadaffi and the purpose of the meeting basically is to establish the level of rapport so that the two nations can put behind them the recent statement that has been made and move forward. So it is a process that has been initiated and it is continuing and, God willing, we will see it to the end," he said. When asked if Nigeria is actually ready to mend fences, Mr. Niboro said: "the acting president made it clear that all leaders should be diplomatic in their comments about other nations, that there are certain kinds of statement that you can make that can substantially ruffle feathers in other nations. So he actually said that there should be an effort from all other leaders to be a little circumspect over the affairs of other nations." The peace process, he said, is brokered by the president of Liberia ‘to reinstate African unity, and to move ahead.' "The Liberian president is worried about the statements that the Libyan president made and their potential effect on African unity and that is why she came and has made this commendable effort to broker this peace," he said. |
