Politics / Defection To PDP Won’t Affect Our Electoral Fortunes- APC by ModoetForma(m): 8:26pm On Aug 17, 2014
The All Progressives Congress (APC), said on Sunday in Yola that the defection of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not affect the fortunes of the party in Adamawa.
APC Secretary in Adamawa, Alhaji Abdullahi Bakari, who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the defection would not affect the party’s chances in the Oct.11 governorship bye-election.
Ribadu, former chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was also the presidential candidate of defunct Action Congress of Nigeria for the 2011 Presidential Election.
“We are not happy that Ribadu has left us, but one thing that is clear now is that his movement has created more problems for PDP in the state.
“The party in Adamawa is healthy and vibrant, what we are working on now is to have a formidable candidate for the Oct. 11 bye-election to recover our mandate,” Bakari said.
On its part, The PDP in Adamwa said Ribadu’s defection was a welcome development.
The State Secretary of PDP, Mr Tahir Shehu, told the NAN that the doors of the party were open, not only to Ribadu but also for anyone wishing to join it.
Meanwhile, a visit to Ribadu’s governorship campaign office in Jimeta area of Yola, showed that it is wearing a new look with PDP flags hoisted there.

Politics / BREAKING NEWS: Chadian Troops Rescue 85 Nigerian Hostages From Boko Haram by ModoetForma(m): 6:47am On Aug 17, 2014
Chadian troops have rescued 85 Nigerians kidnapped last week by the Islamist terror group Boko Haram, security and human rights sources in Nigeria said Saturday.
Dozens of Boko Haram insurgents stormed the Doron Baga fishing and farming village on the shores of Lake Chad late Sunday through Monday and took away 97 young men and boys plus several women, residents said. The raiders killed 28 residents and burned scores of homes, according to residents.
The hostages were loaded onto motorboats and ferried into neighboring Chad, with residents saying they feared the hostages would be forcefully conscripted as foot soldiers.
Chadian security officials reported intercepting a convoy of buses carrying 85 Nigerians" believed to have been kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists from Baga," a Nigerian security source said.
"The convoy being led by six Boko Haram gunmen was stopped on the Chadian part of the border along Lake Chad for routine checks and the huge number in the convoy raised suspicion," said the source, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the issue.
An official of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Maiduguri confirmed the rescue of the 63 male and 22 female hostages.
The source, who asked that his name not be used, said more than 30 hostages were still being held by Boko Haram. He said their captors sped off with them in motorboats when they spotted the convoy being questioned by Chadian soldiers.
Boko Haram has been waging a five-year armed insurgency to create an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. The group has carried out series of abductions, including the April kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls from a boarding school in the town of Chibok.
Boko Haram uses its hostages as conscripts and sex slaves, according to authorities. They say Boko Haram has killed more than 12,000 people and displaced more than half a million residents.

Politics / I Am Satisfied With Jonathan’s Efforts To Rescue Chibok Girls— IBB by ModoetForma(m): 8:06pm On Aug 16, 2014
Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, is 73 years old today. In this interview to mark the occasion, Babangida, fondly called IBB, speaks on some critical issues in the country, including the continuous detention of the Chibok girls by the Islamist group, Boko Haram, the power situation in the country, the 2015 general elections, among others.
It has been over 100 days since the kidnapping of the Chibok school girls. Despite the assurances by the international community, the girls have not been found. What is the way forward? When do you think we can get these girls back home to their parents?
Perhaps the way forward is what government is doing now. I know there are complications. It is no longer an issue that you could ask the military to move into Sambisa forest and rescue the girls. I think Nigerians want the girls rescued and brought back home alive not dead; that is a very daring thing to do. From my experience as a professional soldier, a lot of planning, a lot of cooperation, a lot of study has to be done to achieve this objective. 217 or whatever the number is, is a lot of population to lose just like that. So I think government is trying from what we got during our last briefing; I am quite satisfied that efforts are really being made to get the girls out. You see, the objective is to get them out of that place alive, the operative word is alive, you can order a full scale military operation and you could get them all killed which would defeat the objective.
Politics / Boko Haram: Ali Modu Sheriff Visits Jonathan by ModoetForma(m): 11:21am On Aug 16, 2014
FORMER governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff has offered to avail security agencies with useful tips on how to combat the Boko Haram insurgency drawing from his governorship experience.
Sheriff, who noted that difficult terrain of Borno has made it difficult for security agents to rout the insurgents, spoke with State House Correspondents after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the presidential Villa, yesterday.
He urged all Nigerians tojoin the fight against Boko Haram because it is a Nigerian problem.
”It is a serious concern to every Nigerian. It is a serious concern to you, me and everybody and it needs everyone of us as Nigerians to put ourselves in a position to see what we can do to help this nation come out of this problem” he said.
Interestingly, Sheriff has variously been accused of establishing a campaign team that transformation into Boko Haram when he was governor of Borno State.
The former governor said the difficult terrain of Borno state has further compounded the fight against the terrorists because those fighting the insurgents must have a good knowledge of the state.
”Borno state is a difficult state compared to any other state in Nigeria. Borno has the biggest landmass bordering Niger, Chad and Cameron. It is an open border. Borno is not like the Republic of Benin with only one entrance into Nigeria. In Borno, you can enter from 20 different points into the country.
Therefore, you need a perfect understanding of the terrain. You need every knowledge that any politician has, particularly any politician that operate in Borno state. That is all we can contribute for now. What ever I can do as a civilian, I will do using my position as the former chief executive of the state for eight years. What I had seen during my tenure I will contribute to the security agencies” he noted.
Dr Sheriff confirmed that he has moved from the opposition All Progressives Congress to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to contribute to moving Nigeria forward.
”My interest now should be on how to move the nation forward. Our interest should be on what will make the nation move forward. My decision will be guided by the interest of the nation first. My moving to the PDP is also in the interest of the nation. We believe that every time, as a leader who lead people, you should advise them on the right course of action,” he said.

It only shows how frail jonathan government is to the extent of the citizens of the country he rules daring him. This is serious and I wonder what the NMA is feeling like and who they think they are. There are thousands of nigerians out there seeking medical attention but to no avail all thanks to the foolishne ss and selfishness of these so called doctors striking in the name of wanting consultants to be given to them only and not pharmacist and nurses, striking in the name of needing a chief surgeon general of the federal republic of nigeria. Who the hell needs a chief surgeon general, that's ceremonial. I'm in full support of jonathan,if I we're president, I'll sack these people, seize their license and execute the chief orchestrators one by one.

Politics / Reuben Abat Email Hacked, Denies Release On Jonathan, Chibok Girls’ Location. by ModoetForma(m): 5:36pm On Aug 15, 2014
The Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity) Reuben Abati has said that he did not send any press release relating to ”President Jonathan Reveals Location Of Chibok Girls And Exposes Boko Haram Masterminds”
The SA to president said that such statement did not emanate from his office and that his email was hacked.
Below is the statement
“All media organisations and persons on my mailing list should kindly disregard the press release purportedly issued by me earlier today titled: PRESIDENT JONATHAN REVEALS LOCATION OF CHIBOK GIRLS AND EXPOSES BOKO HARAM MASTERMINDS.
No such press release was written or circulated by me. It is clearly the work of fraudsters who have hacked into my email account in an odious attempt to mislead the public at the expense of the credibility of the Jonathan Administration.
We totally condemn this criminal resort to political dirty tricks which seeks to cynically play on national concern and emotions about the Boko Haram insurgency and fate of the abducted Chibok girls.
Aspects of the fraudulent press release, such as its incoherence and invitation to click on a link, would have alerted discerning persons who are conversant with the style and format of my press statements to the possibility of skulduggery.
I find it necessary, however, to issue this disclaimer for the benefit of the unwary.

Politics / 2015 Elections: The Challenges Of Jonathan by ModoetForma(m): 6:47am On Aug 15, 2014
WHen the Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees (BOT), Chief Tony Anenih last week announced in Calabar that President Goodluck Jonathan would contest the presidential election in 2015 on the platform of his party, many were not surprised. It was an open secret.
But others wondered if Anenih considered the many issues that could cause obstruction to Jonathan’s re-election bid. From Boko Haram, to the kidnap of Chibok girls, molehill of alleged corruption, some of the issues surrounding the Jonathan administration are as strong as death.
President Jonathan
At every point since he enthronement even as acting president, President Jonathan seems to have had one challenge or controversy almost always around him.
Remarkably, his administration has now been adjudged in some quarters as the weakest and the most challenged in the history of the country.
It is thus not surprising that the opposition has since its advent played up the negatives of the administration focusing on major sore points of the administration as insecurity, poor infrastructure and unemployment. The last is perceived by many as a time bomb that may explode in no distant time as more graduates are being churned out of tertiary institutions annually without any hope of profitable engagement.
Meddlesome opposition
The APC has persistently painted the administration as one that swam in corruption and lacked self-respect noting that its foot soldiers were people who had been shown to have been indicted for corruption.
For instance, when Dr. Okupe claimed government will generate 780,000 jobs through the ‘Young Graduate Employment Scheme’ and 5,000 jobs in each of the 36 states through SURE-P, opposition advised the teeming young graduates who have no jobs not to allow themselves to be hoodwinked by this promise, advising them to remember that this same administration promised to create 10,000 jobs in each of the 36 states through SURE-P in the past but couldn’t do so.
Jonathan severally got knocks on every issue ranging from security, conflicts, politics, governance, infrastructure and the opposition which threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable and made good their threat recently threatened to form a parallel government should Jonathan win 2015 presidential election.
Boko Haram
If there is anything that has affected the Jonathan administration more, it is the insecurity situation in the country. Since 2010, the Nigerian nation has almost on a daily basis experienced violations to life and property in the hands of the Islamic Boko Haram sect.
While some people believe that the insurgency is a result of social, religious, economic, and political imbroglio, the agenda of the insurgency in Nigeria is turning into a mystery. It had claimed to be anti-west and focused on the establishment of Islamic rule.
Nigerians, especially majority of Christians and even some Muslims who were of the view that Boko Haram represented an Islamic agenda had challenged devout Muslims to find means of curbing the nefarious activities of the sect that that has portrayed Islam in bad light.
But it is increasingly becoming clearer to Nigerians and the international community that Boko Haram was just a criminal gang using the name of Islam to perpetuate evil.
The bombings and killings in the north have degenerated over the years to the point of kidnapping school girls and taking over of an entire community, Gwoza by the terrorists. Nigerians are waiting to see how government translates its promises to secure their lives, meet its promises of increased power supply, implement its job creation strategies, reconstruct the nation’s landscape for better transportation, and boosts agricultural production for a better nourished populace.
Thousands of people have been killed in terror attacks in the North since the insurgents came on board.
Kidnap of Chibok girls
This is perhaps, the greatest tragedy of the Jonathan administration. The abduction of about 300 Chibok school girls and the subsequent inability to rescue them have continued to generate outrage both at home and abroad. This is distasteful news to a country where, already, 10.5 million children of school age are out of school, and where no more than four per cent of girls in the North-East of Nigeria ever manage to complete secondary school.
Protests have come and died but the problem is beyond what money can buy. There is no alternative to life and compensating the parents of the girls with money does not solve the problem when the girls are still alive and can be rescued.
The worst part of the story is that despite assistance by the international community, nothing has come out of it.
Recently, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) advised President Jonathan to forget his re-election in 2015 if the abducted schoolgirls are not released before the end of October.
The forum alleged that the frequent communal clashes in the north were engineered to weaken the region politically and economically as a way to exploit such weaknesses for electoral benefits in 2015.
The NEF in a statement signed by two members of the forum, Mr. Solomon Dalung and Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, had accused the presidency of lacking the will to fight insurgency even as it decried the deep-seated corruption and incompetence in the country, which it said has “allowed a band of terrorists to take and hold vast parts of our land and population hostage, while every citizen lives in fear that they will be its next victim. The security situation in our nation today represents the most serious threat to our individual and collective lives in our entire history.
Consistent identity
“The reality is that the threat posed by what appears to be an insurgency that has many manifestations and defies a clear and consistent identity is growing due to the absence of a clear national consensus over its nature and its solutions.
“In the light of our firm conviction that the insurgency and related security challenges pose a threat to the 2015 elections and the survival of our nation, we strongly advise President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to bring an end to the insurgency in all its manifestations and produce the Chibok girls before the end of October, 2014.The circumstances under which our fellow citizens in and around Gwoza in Borno State in particular live and die will not be tolerated by any people who have a government and a leader who swore to defend them, and they must be reversed immediately.
“If President Jonathan fails to do this, Nigerians will be left with the only conclusion that he has forfeited his right to ask for our mandate beyond 2015. At all cost, the 2015 elections must be free and fair. This means that any threat which may provide a cover for militarising the electoral process must be eliminated before the elections. Every part of Nigeria must participate in these elections, and no citizen should be deprived of his or her right to vote under any excuse,” the forum said.
Rotation of power
As 2015 general elections draw closer, the fact that the “North” is strongly opposed to Jonathan’s 2015 presidential ambition is becoming more vehement. The actions and inaction of those who claim to represent and speak for the north have become more glaring to political observers. So many voices are rising from the north in the bid to stop Jonathan’s ambition for 2015.
To these northerners, Jonathan by the doctrine of necessity has served Yar’ Adua’s two-term in office and contesting another term would be a third. For the North the strident opposition to Jonathan’s re-election could backfire and garner more support for Jonathan from the south.
His Patience
Behind every successful man is a woman and for any problem a man encounters in his life time, a woman somewhere must have played a major role. Anywhere Jonathan’s success story is told, Dame Patience will be featured prominently. She is part of his success story and part of his problems. She is his asset as well as his problem. There is nothing Nigerians have not used Dame Patience Jonathan, the beautiful wife of the president’s name to do. Cartoonists, comedians, political critics have found in her a viable weapon both for their jokes and against her husband’s government. The issue is, Dame Jonathan does not appear to understand when to lend a hand to her husband and when to stand aside. But what she did well or shouldn’t have done was with good intent. Unfortunately, Dame Patience Jonathan has not learnt lessons from some of her careless outbursts. And her assistants perhaps contributed to the problem by not advising her that sometimes, silence is golden.
Politics / CBN Reintroduce Charges On ATM Cards by ModoetForma(m): 7:40pm On Aug 14, 2014
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said that Automated Teller Machines (ATM) withdrawals would attract N65 per transaction to cover remuneration for the switches from Sept. 1
This is contained in a circular signed by Dipo Fatokun, Director Banking and Payment System Department, in Abuja on Thursday.
“The reintroduction of “Remote-On-Us’’ ATM cash withdrawal transactions fee, which will be now N65 per transaction to cover the remuneration of the switches, ATM monitoring and fit-notes processing by acquiring banks.
“The new charge shall apply as from fourth “Remote-on-us’’ withdrawal in a month by a card holder, thereby making the first three `remote on us’ transactions free for the card holders, but to be paid for by the issuing bank,’’ it said.
According to the circular, Sept. 1, 2014 shall be the effective date for the implementation of the new fee.
It stated that banks were expected to conduct adequate sensitisation of their customers on the introduction of the new fee.
The circular stated that all ATM cash withdrawal on the ATM of issuing banks should be at no cost to the card holder.
It recalled that CBN in collaboration with the Bankers Committee had in December 2012 transferred the payment of N100 fee on Remote-on-us ATM cash withdrawal transactions to issuing banks.
“This fee was shared between the acquirers, issuers and switches. On the commencement of the arrangement in December 2012, banks decided to waive the issuer fee (N35) which should have ordinarily been an income to them.
“Consequently banks only bore the cost of N65 each time their customers use another banks’ ATM,’’ it said.

Politics / Amosun Forcing Osoba, Others Out Of APC, Says Ex-deputy Gov. by ModoetForma(m): 6:46am On Aug 14, 2014
ABEOKUTA—Former deputy governor of Ogun State, Rafiu Ogunleye, has accused Governor Ibikunle Amosun of trying to force former governor of the state, Aremo Olusegun Osoba and other party stalwarts of the All Progressives Party, APC out of the party.
But in a swift reaction, APC publicity secretary in the state, Sola Lawal described Ogunleye’s statement as unfortunate.
According to him, the former number two man ”became everything he is today on the platform of the progressives before he defected to the PDP. As at today is still a member of the APC and no one has left the party for other political parties.”
The former deputy governor, who served with Osoba on the platform of Alliance for Democracy, AD, between 1992 and 1993, however said he warned Amosun against his action six months after he was elected governor but refused to change.
Ogunleye, who has declared his governorship ambition under the PeoplesDemocratic Party, PDP, claimed he was part of those that brought about Amosun’s emergence as governor.
Speaking after he submitted his letter of intent to the PDP Chairman in the state, Bayo Dayo, at the party Secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogunleye said the APC had lost its founding fathers to other parties.
Ogunleye said “Let me tell you something, the AC element in APC in Ogun amounts to almost 75 to 80 per cent and they have gradually left APC. You are in this state and you know what is happening. It doesn’t give me happiness. I have participated in the politics of the state and I can say that I participated in installing the present government.”
, I played a key role.
“Having installed the government, it is not doing what is expected for party members who worked hard to get him into that position. We discovered that as soon as he got there, he tried to separate everybody. I had a cause to meet him in 2011 barely six months after he got into power and I told him that within six months, he was already losing people, that people were not happy with him.
“But, instead of seeing changes, the situation became aggravated. People became disgruntled, members of the party became disgruntled and the party broke into two. So, there was ACN group on one side and the SIA group on the other hand. You can’t run a party like that. That was the reason many of us decided to leave the party, when there was no improvement. So, that is why I am here today”.
When asked about his ability to govern the state considering his age, the septuagenarian said “What does it take to administer a state? Tell me, does it require me to run a marathon race? Governance is about experience, wisdom and what you know. You will have commissioners to assist you, but you must have the experience.
”If they want employment, you provide employment for them. Is it age you will use to do all that? Or will I have to climb treesand mountain? The constitution does not state a maximum age, only minimum”.

Politics / PICTURES. Ebola: Governors Avoid Handshakes, Adopt Knuckles Greeting by ModoetForma(m): 9:13pm On Aug 13, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan, Wednesday, summoned the thirty six state governors with their commissioners for Health for an emergency meeting to discuss possible ways to curtail the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). The governors opted to greet one another with knuckles at the presidential villa.
Nigeria has so far reported that ten persons have been diagnosed of the deadly virus while two have been confirmed dead after a Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer died of the virus in Lagos.
Many other Nigerians, who had initial contacts with the dead are being quarantined while many others are being given treatment by the government.

Politics / 2015 Elections: Prophets Of Doom Will Be Disappointed – Jonathan by ModoetForma(m): 6:34pm On Aug 13, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said that those predicting and prophesying doom for the country on the basis of the 2015 general elections would be disappointed.
Jonathan stated this at an interfaith conference organised by the Interfaith Initiative for Peace with the theme: “The Imperative of Interfaith Understanding and Cooperation for Responsible Politics,’’ in Abuja.
President Jonathan
He renewed his promise to Nigerians and the international community that the country would be stronger and more united after the elections.
“I once again assure Nigerians and the international community that the 2015 elections will come and go, and Nigeria will stand stronger.
“The Nigerians I know and interact with everyday are only asking for one thing in the elections; transparency, free and fair elections, and I have promised them.
“They want to vote and they want their votes to count; they don’t want to be molested, they don’t want ballot boxes to be hijacked by criminals.
“If they are convinced that the process is free, fair and credible they have no reason to be angry; nobody can fight against one man, one vote, one woman one vote, one youth one vote.
“And government will make sure that Nigerians are not killed during and after elections.’’
Jonathan chided some members of the opposition and even labour leaders who were opposed to the deployment of heavy security personnel to protect lives and property during elections.
He reminded them of the killings and destruction that greeted the 2011 elections, including the killing of 10 youth corps members in Bauchi, and vowed never to let it happen again.
The president also emphasised that the governorship elections held in the country in the last four years attested to his commitment to free and fair polls in the country.
According to him, the defeat of PDP in some of the polls shows that he is not using state security apparatus to manipulate elections in favour of his party as alleged by the opposition.
“My promise of free and fair election is clear. All governorship elections that have been conducted so far, you can agree with me that they have been free and fair.
“I am from the PDP, the ruling party, but I don’t use that strength to make sure that PDP must win by all means.
“PDP has lost elections in Edo State; we lost in Anambra State, we lost election in Ondo State, of course only two days back, we lost in Osun.
“But we know and we are saying that this country must change.
“The kind of election we had in the 1960s that led to the crisis in the West that threatened the sovereignty of this country cannot come up again.
“The kind of elections we had during the Second Republic where some people won elections as governors and ran away from their states cannot come up again.
“Nigerians must vote and our votes must count. If I was interested in manipulating elections, my party would not be losing all these governorship elections.
“All what we want is credible elections.’’
Jonathan also stated that Nigeria’s relevance at the world state was as a result of its diversity, and not because of crude oil.
According to him, Nigeria is being celebrated as a great nation by other African leaders, and is the hope of the black man because of the 1914 amalgamation of the southern and northern protectorates.

Politics / Nyako’s Replacement: Ribadu Gets Presidency’s Backing To Dump APC For PDP - See by ModoetForma(m): 9:11pm On Aug 12, 2014
Nuhu Ribadu, is set to dump the All Progressives Congress for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. The switch in party is to enable the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commissioner boss to secure the PDP gubernatorial ticket and contest the election slated for next year.Competent party sources in Yola and Abuja confirmed that necessary steps had been put in place to enable the anti-graft czar to actualise his ambition of ruling the state under the PDP platform.

One of the top sources confirmed to Vanguard last night that barring any last minute hitch, Nuhu Ribadu had concluded arrangements to defect to the ruling PDP on Thursday this week.

Although Ribadu had since made up his mind to dump the APC for PDP, sources close to him said that he needed to get the approval of the President before throwing his hat into the political ring.

The President, according to competent sources, gave a tacit approval last weekend for Ribadu to cross over to the PDP for the purpose of flying the party’s gubernatorial flag in the next election.

Two meetings were reportedly hosted in Abuja and Kaduna by those delegated by the Presidency to herald Ribadu into the PDP’s fold and assure him that he would be granted waivers to be able to run as its flag bearer.

In the Abuja meeting, a PDP chieftain from Adamawa Southern Senatorial Zone invited a couple APC chairmen from Adamawa together with a handful of former members of the state House of Assembly during the tenure of Governor Boni Haruna in the company of three members of the current PDP state EXCO with Ribadu in attendance. The PDP bigwig, who happens to come from the same local government area with a top aide to Jonathan, informed the gathering that he was personally directed by Mr President to invite them to the meeting and inform them that the defection of Ribadu to PDP had the full support of the first citizen.

The Abuja meeting convener also said that all that they were required to do was to return to their wards and mobilise delegates in readiness for the party’s primaries that would soon take place.

The convener assured them that they should not be worried about the entry of the former EFCC boss into the race at the late hour since the party hierarchy was willing to grant him the needed waiver to scale through the race.

The meeting in Kaduna was coordinated by Ribadu’s close ally and former Minister in the Buhari’s government and had the son of a former PDP Chairman in attendance.
The development is said to have jostled other gubernatorial hopefuls in the state, who had worked round the clock to oust Murtala Nyako in order to have a smooth sail into the Government House.

It was not clear as at last night if the wave of opposition against Ribadu would thin down in the days ahead.

Contacted, one of Ribadu’s aides claimed that he was aware of his master’s intention to cross over to PDP but did not know the exact date.
Politics / Crisis Looms As Confab Plans To Send Bill For Amendment Of 1999 Constitution. by ModoetForma(m): 6:58am On Aug 12, 2014
ABUJA — AS delegates at the on going National Conference resumed plenary yesterday to debate on the final report of the Conference as produced by the Secretariat after one month of recess, strong indications have emerged that crisis looms as some northern delegates
may have concluded plans to frustrate moves to amend some sections of the 1999 Constitution.
The Conference Secretariat had already prepared a draft Constitution to be sent to the National Assembly.
The Conference Secretariat yesterday distributed the draft copy of the constitution and a bill to all the delegates, which the northern
delegates were not comfortable with and had planned to ensure that it did not sail through.
At the resumption of the conference yesterday, a northern delegate from Jigawa State representing the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mallam Sani Zoro described the draft constitution being prepared by the Conference Secretariat as a strange one.
The Justice Idris Kutigi led 2014 National Conference plans to forward a Bill to both the Senate and the House of Representatives to alter some sections of the 1999 Constitution aimed at correcting what it termed some anomalies in the said constitution and make it more people oriented.
Kutigi in the Bill entitled, An Act to further alter the Provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999( with the
first, second and third Alterations, and for Related Matters 2014, will go the National Assembly as an Executive Bill.
Vanguard gathered that crises were already brewing at the Conference as delegates were poised to fight with the leadership of the Confab for tagging it a draft Constitution rather than tag it proposal for the alteration of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria against the backdrop that the conference has no such mandate to write a constitution, but to advise the President on areas that could be changed in the constitution.
When Vanguard contacted a lawyer and a delegate, Festus Okoye to speak on the document, he noted that the problem was not with the content of the document, but with the National Conference Procedure Rules 2014, stressing that the title was wrong. He argued that rather than write “Draft Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2014,” it should have been, “Proposal for the Alteration of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, which the rules recognise.
Okoye said that there were some delegates and persons who never wanted the Confab to succeed from the beginning, and that what the leadership of the Confab had done was to play into the hands of such persons as it was not within the mandate of delegates to draft a constitution.

Politics / OSUN POLLS: APC Alleges Plot To Change Results As Atiku Urges Voters To Resist. by ModoetForma(m): 9:58pm On Aug 09, 2014
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, of planning to subvert Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State by declaring a false result.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed and INEC Boss Prof Attahiru Jega
The APC said while its candidate, incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola, leads in the polls, there are plans by the PDP to declare Iyiola Omisore as winner. Mr. Omisore is the PDP candidate.
“Credible information at our disposal indicates another criminal plot by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its allied forces to corrupt the open results of the election which have shown clearly the excellent outing of our party,” the APC said in a statement by its Osun state spokesperson, Kunle Oyatomi.
The party said the PDP officials were in “hurried and clandestine meetings to subvert” the process after failing to win in the fields.
“The people of Osun have spoken and spoken well. The result of the election must be upheld,” the APC said.
Collation of the results in the intensely-contested poll is ongoing.
In a separate call late Saturday, a former vice president, Atiku Abubkar, called on Osun State voters to defend their votes, saying peoples choice must be respected “no matter who wins”.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “to ensure that the will of the people is not subverted” in order to restore confidence to the electoral and democratic process.
Politics / Why Jonathan’‘ll Be Re-elected —anaere by ModoetForma(m): 3:54pm On Aug 08, 2014
MR. Anaere Emmanuel, Zonal Coordinator, Goodluck Jonathan Mass Mobilization Movement Campaign South East zone, in this interview explains why President Goodluck Jonathan should be encouraged to seek re-election in 2015.

Has President Jonathan done well these past years?
He has done so well in the area of education and he has succeeded where his predecessors failed. Take the alamajiri school scheme in the northern part of the country, previous leaders failed to realise the importance of education in that area. They neglected it, but this is the man that came and said no, these people need education. And made it compulsory for everyone in that region to enable the less privilege have access to education.
In the agricultural sector he is there, he has provided so many incentives for farmers, in the power sector the president has been able to take it to the next level, he has made sure that there is electricity in every city, maybe not up to expectation, but at least to a certain level. And he has promised to continue with that.
Do you think it is fair that President Jonathan still wants to vie for a second term in office, considering the fact that there are so many issues threatening the unity of the country?
Well in the first place nobody will say that it is as a result of Jonathan’s ambition come 2015 that Boko-Haram sprung up. Boko–Haram has said what they don’t want is western education, they have not said that what they don’t want is President Jonathan come 2015. So the issue of Jonathan coming to power in 2015 or his ambition to run for second term has nothing to do with the security situation of the country.
Do you think the south east is marginalized?
No we are not looking at the issue of marginalisation because we are not marginalised in any way, marginalisation is a political statement that can lead to division of the country. The Jonathan administration has been so fair to the south east region, he is one of our own and he is our own and if you don’t know President Goodluck Jonathan is the Azikwe of our time.
What is your word to Nigerians?
My advice to all Nigerians is to irrespective of age, status, religion, and party affiliations; where ever they are they should register, vote and protect your vote. Don’t get involved in anything that will cause trouble or insecurity. Wherever you are be your brother’s keeper. Keep your eyes on the ball which is President Jonathan, who is taking Nigeria to the next level.

Politics / Osun Polls: Aregbesola, Omisore In Their Words by ModoetForma(m): 6:32am On Aug 08, 2014
Tomorrow’s election would be the first time in seven years that the people of Osun State would choose a governor for themselves, the incumbent having been enthroned by the judicial pronouncement of the Court of Appeal in 2010.
The two major candidates in the election are the incumbent, Rauf Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress, APC and Senator Iyiola Omisore, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
It is undoubtedly a tough battle given the grit and determination of the two major combatants. Omisore was involved on the winning side of all three gubernatorial elections since the advent of the Fourth Republic, having been deputy to Governor Bisi Akande in 1999 and then, a strong backer of the PDP in the 2003 and 2007contests.
Governor Aregbesola ,on his part, has been in the trenches since 2005, first being denied in 2007 before the judicial upturning of the 2007 victory of Olagunsoye Oyinlola in 2010.
Omisore on his part first sought the governorship in 1999 but was made to step down for Akande in that year’s election by some party elders among whom were reportedly, Chief Bola Ige. In separate interviews with the two candidates conducted well ahead of the election the two major men in contention for tomorrow’s prize previewed the contest. Excerpts:
LONG before I assumed this office, I prepared so well for the office in a way that going by the normal run, I should not be working as hard as I’m working now for re-election.
A commentator said something to the effect that I am one of the politicians that from day one began my campaign. From the day I entered this office, I started my campaign.
Aregbesola
How many governors walk the streets with their citizens? I have been doing that since the first month in office.
Interactivefora
How many governors created interactive fora in Nigeria before me? There is none. I was the first governor to devote close to ten hours of continuous engagement on a quarterly basis with the citizens. The people ask any question in a no hold barred atmosphere.
The Ogbeni Till Day Break is a worldwide engagement because we take feedbacks from social media.
Whoever now hates us has something else against us not for the fact that we have not done the needful.
The increase wasn’t solicited; we did it out of our own understanding of the reality of what the students were going through.
When I get to campaign grounds, I say our roads have tribal marks. We now have special roads which when we complete some of them, they will be tourism attraction on their own.
The road we are building in Gbogan, people will be coming to look at it because it is not an ordinary road. It is a road that took me time to conceive and design and we are taking our time to develop it. So, when people talk about the cost of our roads, I just laugh because it is not good to be talking to people who don’t know what they are saying.
You see, I came here from the streets and it is easy for me to go back to the streets. My real home is in the streets. I laugh when they talk about me because they don’t know I am from the street.
I am a product of the popular forces, the people, and I am part and parcel of them. I emanated from them and a product of their struggles.
The Akara seller knows that I feed her child every day. I identify with them on a daily basis in their struggle to live and they understand that everything we do is to make live easy for them.
My administration does not suffer alienation from the people, it is one and same with the people and that is the basis of our confidence in their ever ready support at all times.
Omisore’s words
When you go and see what is happening on ground, there is so much of noise. I think the only thing he adopted is propaganda. He wants to build schools, he wants to build roads, but up till today, he has been able to build only five schools. –
The next thing for him is the issue of noise making on road construction. Today, the only roads that he is doing are federal roads where he would be refunded and at very ridiculous and embarrassing rates.
For instance, the Osogbo – Ijabe road was originally awarded by the Federal Ministry of Works in 2010 for N9.78 billion. The same road, the same design, the same specifications has now been jacked to N19.8 billion.
The idea of Aregbesola is not to develop, but where to get bulk money.
They are making money on uniform per child. The uniform is supplied at N2,400 per uniform which is being sold in the market at N400. So, on that alone someone must have stolen about N12 billion. That was what led to the school reclassification programme so that there will be enough money to steal.
Focus of development
It is very unfortunate. I have never seen a government of this nature that is being driven by what you want to eat. That has been the focus of development. Anywhere they cannot locate money to steal, they remove their eyes from that area.
I do not know, maybe he is an engineer with Vanguard. We have asked him to know his registration number. Every engineer in Nigeria has a number and that number goes with each person to the grave.
*Omisore
We have challenged him a couple of times to show his certificate of COREN, his name is not there. I am a member, I am a fellow, I am a council member, his name does not show anywhere in our register. He is a technician. He is what we call Refrigeration Technician.
You can imagine what is happening in Osun State today, we are under billboard siege. Last count was 2,940 bill boards in my state.
It has become an embarrassment to us. The state is being defaced by billboards. That is a sitting government, panicking. Of course, he will leave because he is a stranger in the land. He will leave that seat by the grace of God.
He is going to be removed peacefully because the indigenes of Osun State are fed up with Aregbesola. He is only relying on imported people from Lagos.
This is a governor that will be walking on the street in the afternoon distributing corn meals, doing rituals in broad daylight in Osun State. He sought power wrongly and that is why he is messing up everywhere.

Politics / NERDC Decries Nass’s Approval Of N30m, Instead Of N270m by ModoetForma(m): 10:38pm On Aug 04, 2014
The Executive Secretary of Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, NERDC, Professor Godswill Obioma, yesterday, decried the approval of only N30 million of the N270 million appropriated for it in 2014 budget by the National Assembly.
Prof. Obioma stated this at the public presentation of the revised 9-year Basic Education Curriculum and kick-off of the training school of school teachers on the use of the teachers guide for the implementation of the curriculum in Abuja.
He said: “Of the N270 million proposed in the 2014 budget and admitted by our parent industry, and office of the Senior Special Assistant to Mr. President on MDGs to complete the printing of distribution of the outstanding books to primary 4-6, only N30 million was approved by the National Assembly.”
He said if the development was left uncorrected, “it will certainly derail the implementation of the revised BEC as approved by the NCE and thus affect the attainment of the transformation agenda of the federal government.
Politics / Gunmen Abduct Bayelsa Speaker’s Brother. by ModoetForma(m): 12:16pm On Aug 04, 2014
Gunmen in the early hours of monday abducted Mr Iniokpoemi Benson, a younger brother to the Speaker of Bayelsa House of Assembly, Mr Kombowei Benson.
Mr Hilary Okpara, Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, who confirmed the incident, said the victim was abducted at about 3 a.m. at his residence in Korokorosei village in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
Okpara told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview in Yenagoa that the police special anti-kidnap squad was on the trail of the kidnappers.
“We have got information on the incident, the DPO in the area and the Assistant Commissioner of Police have briefed me and the good thing is that we have known the direction the hoodlums are heading to so we shall round them up,” Okpara said.
The commissioner assured that the gunmen would be apprehended and the victim rescued.
NAN had gathered that Benson was the immediate past chairman of the community’s development committee.
The commissioner also commented on the fate of 90-year-old Madam Florentina Paulker, mother of Sen. Emmanuel Paulker representing Bayelsa Central, who was abducted in July.
“We have made some progress on that incident, we arrested one of them within hours and the next day we arrested three more subjects who are helping us and we are still making more arrests.
“It is a syndicate from what we have found out, we have cut off the communication link between the suspects in our custody and those holding the woman, so we are hoping that soon we shall free her,” he said.
Paulker, who was abducted on July 30 in Opollo area of Yenagoa, had been kidnapped in 2010, but was freed after eight days in captivity.
The security agents at the time killed one of the kidnappers in a shoot-out.
