Nairaland / General / Robbers On Power Bike Failed In Bullion Van Attack At Marine Bridge. by moseskadiri(m): 3:42pm On Oct 25, 2013
Sporadic and ceaseless gun shots brought commercial activities to a halt at Marine Bridge area, when policemen and robbers engaged in a gun battle that lasted for several minutes.

Insideaj.com learnt that the robbers had arrived the area in several power bikes and hijacked a bullion van conveying a huge amount of money from its escort vehicle.

The robbers shot sporadically into the air to scare motorists and onlookers, as they attempted to escape with the bullion van. However, their movement was reported to have been slowed down by heavy traffic and arrival of policemen from Area B command. The robbers came down from the hijacked bullion van and engaged the police in a shootout, which resulted in a member of the Nigerian Navy and a few other civilians sustaining injuries. However, one of the robbers was reportedly shot dead while another was arrested.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos Police command, Ngozi Braide, told the press that,” The DPO of Apapa Division was informed of a gunfire around Ijora-Badia Bridge and dispatched a team of anti-robbery policemen. The robbers opened fire on the policemen and our men retaliated, one of the robbers was killed, another arrested, while the others escaped with bullet wounds”.

“A yellow unregistered power bike, with the inscription, Apache Hipar, was recovered from the robbers as well as two AK-47 riffles with double magazine each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects but normalcy has returned to the area”, she said.

Nigeria-police-logo-360x225The nefarious activities of some OPC members in Ajegunle area of Lagos state reached its head, when they were apprehended by the Police for allegedly arresting and torturing a certain Yakubu.

According to PUNCH Metro, Yakubu and his friends who were returning home from the beach, where they had gone to celebrate Sallah were stopped and accused of wandering at night by the OPC men at Okorogbo street and thereby demanded money from them.

The refusal of Yakubu and his friends to be extorted, reportedly angered the OPC members and fighting ensued. Yakubu’s friends fled the scene as they were being overpowered. This left Yakubu at the mercy of the vigilante group, who went on to unleash untold beating and torture on their victim, as he was bound by his hands and feet and tied to a stick.

A distressed call paced by a resident to the police saved the victim from death. And on sighting the anti-robbery policemen, the OPC men took to their heels, however, they were later arrested by the police.

According to a resident of Okorogbo who sought for anonymity, the OPC men in the area usually arrest people at night and often accusing them of being robbers.

“The OPC often take the laws into their hands. Anytime they stop you at night and you don’t have money to give them, you’re in trouble”, he said.

Meanwhile, according to the police, all the suspects have been arrested while Yakubu, the victim is in the hospital recuperating from the near-fatal injuries, he sustained.
