Northern elders, yesterday, broke their silence on the slamming of state of emergency on three states, describing the action of President Goodluck Jonathan as an indirect declaration of war on Northern Nigeria.

The President’s action, which took the northern elders by surprise, came barely three weeks after Jonathan accepted a roadmap from the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, on how to end the Boko Haram insurgency.

The elders had successfully impressed upon the Presidency to raise the Boko Haram committee to dialogue with the sect to restore elusive peace to the region.

Jonathan, who met with the NEF leadership in Abuja in April, subsequently inaugurated the Turaki-led committee with a mandate to broker peace with the sect and compensate their victims within a two-month time frame.

However, after inaugurating the panel, the sect leadership rejected the amnesty offer, saying that it was the government that should seek amnesty for having killed its Muslim brothers.

But irked by continuous bloodletting in several parts of the north, President Jonathan on Tuesday called on the armed forces to move into the states of Borno, Yobo and Adamawa, arrest suspected terrorists and restore peace in those places.

Many reports indicated that soldiers armed with armoured tank were already on the ground in the affected states preparatory to take out terrorists from their strongholds scattered in the North Eastern part of the country.

But a spokesman for the NEF, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who relayed the position of the group, told Vanguard that they were disappointed by the sudden change of tactic by Jonathan on how to resolve the crisis in the north.



Abdullahi said: “It is very sad to see that the President has easily changed direction from dialogue and reconciliation to war in his bid to end the cycle of violence in the north.

“The volte-face by Jonathan amounts to undermining our agreement with him on peace and reconciliation and we are disturbed that he has opted for force rather than peace to end the violence.

“What the President has done has now justified the fear of those who rejected membership of the Boko Haram amnesty committee on the suspicion that he was not sincere in setting up the panel and that it was programmed to fail so as to justify military action against the north.

“We hereby call on the President to immediately disband the so-called Boko Haram amnesty committee, as there is no need to continue to waste public funds on a matter, whose purpose has been deliberately truncated by the very person who initiated it.

The NEF has lately been mounting opposition against Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015, insisting that it is their turn to occupy the top post.

Vows to truncate Jonathan’s 2015 presidency

The group has vowed to wrestle power from Jonathan in 2015 by presenting a candidate that would defeat the President at the polls.

At a meeting with the Borno State Governor on Tuesday, the NEF stated that they had what it takes to produce the next President of Nigeria and they would seek to do just that.

Though Jonathan has not openly declared his intent to run, his kinsmen and foot soldiers have been threatening there would be war if he is dumped at the poll.

The Presidency is yet to condemn or distance itself from the strident calls by various Ijaw groups and individuals in the Niger Delta for him to be re-elected or for Nigeria to break up.

A 25-year-old man was on Monday arrested at Somolu, Lagos State after he was allegedly caught having sex with his two-year-old cousin.

The suspect, David Nnebong, lived with the victim’s grandmother at 18 Awoseyin Street, Somolu.

It was learnt that the incident occurred at about 3pm when the toddler was left in the house with the suspect by her grandmother, known as Iya Wura.

The mother of the girl was said to be in Calabar.

Our source learnt that on her return, the little girl who was crying while greeting her grandmother pointed to her vagina.

A neighbour, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was the girl’s cries that made her grandmother suspicious.

He said, “It was the child who actually made Iya Wura know that David had raped her. The grandmother raised the alarm and all the neighbours pounced on David.

“Although she was upset with David, Iya Wura and other relatives, who were present, did not want to get him arrested.

“They only wanted him to leave the house and relocate elsewhere, but neighbours insisted on involving the police.

At the time David was taken to Alade Police Division, there was still semen on the child.”

As of Tuesday evening, the relatives of the victim were yet to report to the police station to write statements although Nneobong was said to still be in police custody.

The Pesident of the Living Faith Church, Bishop Oyedepo was in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday April 20, to open a new branch of the church.

The Winner’s Chapel Church located in Likoni Road, Nairobi is said have a 20,000-seater auditorium and believed to now be the biggest church in the whole of East and Central Africa.

Paris Jackson is no longer hiding beneath the masks her late father once made his children wear to protect them from the prying press.

Paris, 15, is now doing just the opposite, appearing as the cover girl for a British magazine and opening up about her father, her family and her future, reports ABC News.

“He didn’t want anyone to see what we looked like,” Paris said about why she and her siblings, Prince and Blanket, wore masks in public. “That way we could have what he didn’t, which was a normal childhood.”

Paris was 11 years old in 2009 when her father died from an overdose, two weeks before the start of his “This Is It” comeback concert.

“I have lots of memories of my father,’ she tells Event, the Mail on Sunday’s new magazine. “He was an incredible father. We all loved him to death.”

Now under the care of her grandmother, 82-year-old Katherine Jackson, Paris is trying to have the normal childhood her father wanted her to have. She is a member of her high school’s cheerleading squad and told the magazine she is striving to have a “normal high school experience.”

“Paris is very much a normal teenager, or as normal as it can be when your name is Paris Jackson,” Caroline Graham, Event’s Los Angeles correspondent, told ABC News. “She has normal friends. When I was with her she was texting her girlfriends. They go shopping.”

Paris’ family’s private life will be back in the spotlight soon with the $40 billion wrongful death suit filed by the Jackson family against the concert promoters who sponsored Jackson’s “This Is It” tour.

Jury selection begins today in Los Angeles for the trial, which is expected to last three to four months. Paris and Prince, 16, may testify about their father’s final days. (we do not know this as fact…)

Three men were forcibly removed from an annual culture festival in Saudi Arabia and subsequently sent back to the UAE after it was deemed that women could find them irresistible.

The delegates from the UAE were in attendance at the Jenadrivah Heritage & Culture Festival in Riyadh, the Saudi capital when religious police officers stormed the stand and evicted the men because “they are too handsome,” according to the Arabic language newspaper, Elaph.

“A festival official said the three Emiratis were taken out on the grounds they are too handsome and that the Commission members feared female visitors could fall for them,” Elaph reported.

Saudi Arabia is a deeply religious and conservative society which forbids women from interacting with unrelated males.

Following the incident, Elaph said the festival’s management took swift action to deport the trio back to Abu Dhabi, capital of the Emirates.

The UAE released an official statement indicating that the religious police were anxious over the unexpected presence of an unnamed female artist in the pavilion.

“Her visit to the UAE stand was a coincidence as it was not included in the programme which we had already provided to the festival’s management,” Saeed Al Kaabi, head of the UAE delegation to the festival, said in a statement.

Three female undergraduates of Tai Solarin College of Education, Omu-Ijebu, Ogun State, who were declared missing have been sighted in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates(UAE), PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.

The leader of the radical Islamist group Boko Haram has rejected the idea of any potential amnesty deal, which the country’s presidency said it would study in a bid to curb a bloody insurgency, in a statement obtained by AFP Thursday.
