Sports / Super Eagles Star Becomes Turkish Club’s Highest Earner by NAIJABOST(m): 7:42pm On Oct 08, 2020

After the mass exodus of top stars such as Daniel Sturridge, John Obi Mikel, Ogenyi Onazi, Ivanildo Fernandes, Donis Avdijaj, and Firatcan Üzüm from the Medical Park Stadyumu, Trabzonspor now have a new top earner

Nigeria international Anthony Nwakaeme earns a salary of about 1.5 million euros at Trabzonspor, making him the highest-earning player at the Turkish side, according to a report by the Gazete Futbol.

Trabzonspor witnessed the departure of several high earners this summer, including last term’s top goalscorer Alexander Sörloth, who has since joined RB Leipzig and influential midfielder Jose Sosa, who moved on a free transfer to rivals Fenerbahce.

This leaves old boy Anthony Nwakaeme, and a raft of four recently signed stars, including Vitor Hugo (from Palmeiras), Benik Afobe (on loan from Stoke City), Djaniny Tavares (from Al Ahly), and Fousseni Diabate (from Leicester City), as the Red and Blues’ new top five earners.

Nwakaeme, who joined the Blue Sea Storm in 2018, signed a contract extension last year, which will keep him at the Super Lig side until the summer of 2022.

The one-cap Super Eagles star was one of Trabzonspor’s best players last term, smashing in 14 goals and supplying 11 assists in all competitions as the side challenged for the league title and lifted the Turkish Cup.

The 31-year-old has managed just a goal in four appearances so far this term and was not included in the Nigerian squad gearing to face Algeria in Austria by 7:30 pm on Friday.

NYSC / NYSC Gives New Update On Nationwide Camp Reopening by NAIJABOST(m): 8:08pm On Oct 03, 2020

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has given a new update to prospective corps members as regards to the reopening of orientation camps nationwide.

NYSC Update On Camp Reopening
The scheme through its official Facebook page has expressed hope that the Federal Government through the PTF will soon give approval for the reopening of camps.

NYSC gave the new update while reacting to news that went viral yesterday suggesting that NYSC has received a go ahead order from the federal government to reopen orientation camps across the country.

The now debunked viral news read, “arising from a purported meeting, Orientation Course shall resume 27th October 2020, with Batch “A” Stream 2, adding further that the batch has been subdivided into Batches “A” and “B”.

In a statement issued by the NYSC spokesperson, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi in Abuja on Saturday and shared on their social media pages, the Scheme described the news as fake.

The NYSC said it has been working with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in order to ensure the reopening of NYSC Orientation Camps nationwide, which the PTF had earlier tied to the resumption of educational institutions in the country.

“It is imperative to state that the Scheme has ensured that all the COVID-19 safety protocols incidental to safe hosting of Orientation programmes are in place in all its 37 Orientation Camps.

“Note also that some precautionary safety measures already adopted by the Scheme had earned it the commendation of the PTF,” the statement partly read.

It expressed hope that the Federal Government(FG) through the PTF will soon give approval for the full resumption of camping.

“Management hereby conveys that the news release is fake. Prospective Corps Members and the public are therefore enjoined to kindly disregard the news in its entirety.

“While the NYSC sincerely appreciates the patience so far shown by the PCMs who have waited for over six months to be called-up for participation in the Scheme, it equally empathises with them over the unanticipated disruption of their programmes, resulting from COVID-19 pandemic,” it added.

Celebrities / Kanyamata Does Not Work On Me, Ladies Have Tried And Failed – Pretty Mike by NAIJABOST(m): 8:00pm On Oct 03, 2020

The self-acclaimed Pretty Mike of Lagos stated during an interview with Saturday Beats that he had a line-up of women around him who wanted him to leave his nightclub business to get married soon.

In his words, “I call myself husband material because I am still a bachelor and I have to market myself for the ladies. I am just letting them know that I am a potential husband, though I am not easy to get.

“Kanyamata (sex herbs and potions) will not work on me. Some ladies have tried it but it did not work. I am friends with all the kanyamata sellers, so it would be a fruitless effort.

“Some people think I am a sex addict or that I jump in bed with women but they forget that I am in women’s business as a nightclub owner.

“My business makes me an entertainer and I cannot afford to be boring. I am not what people see on Instagram. I am not a randy man that would jump into bed with anything in skirt.

“People think I have a lot of lovers but I don’t. The stories people hear or believe about me make me popular and attract customers to my club.

“If I was a boring subject, people would not want to associate themselves with me. However, people are curious about my personality and it is good business for me.”

On when he would be getting married, Pretty Mike noted that he was waiting for God’s time.

“When it comes to relationships, I don’t have anyone to flaunt. I find it hard getting into a serious relationship. It is not because I don’t want to but because the ladies are insecure.

“It is difficult to meet a genuine lady that loves me for who I am, irrespective of what people think about me. I believe God’s time is the best. Some of the ladies I have met want me to leave the nightclub business.

“But it is my source of livelihood and I cannot leave it to please anyone. The nightlife business means one would have a lot of women around one. They are the ones one would invite for parties and social gatherings and they would show up.

“I cannot have ugly female friends, so they are all beautiful and voluptuous. My girlfriends get intimidated by these things but I am at my peak right now.”

Sports / “can’t Think Of A Better Striker” – Super Eagles Star Is Player Of The Month In by NAIJABOST(m): 8:23pm On Oct 02, 2020

Snubbed by Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles’ pair of international friendly matches against Algeria and Tunisia next week, gangling forward Paul Onuachu continues to prove his worth in the First Division A

Nigeria international Paul Onuachu is the Belgium Pro League’s Player of the Month for September, having received the highest performance score calculated by top statistics agency Opta.

The former Midtjylland striker was unplayable last month, scoring five goals in just three matches played for KRC Genk, to top the best player’s chart with an Opta score of 87.25.

Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken (82.79), Royal Antwerp’s Simen Kristiansen (79.94), Royal Excel Mouscron’s Kouakou Koffi (79.20), and Beerschot’s Raphael Holzhauser (79.11) complete the top five.

Onuachu got his first of September in Genk’s 5-2 loss at Beerschot before bagging a brace to lead his side to a 3-1 defeat of Mechelen.

And just two days to the end of the month, the 26-year-old striker netted another double in Genk’s 2-all draw at home to Oostende.

The Super Eagles star has six goals in six games for the Belgian side.

Impressed by Onuachu’s effectiveness in front of goal, former Genk striker Wesley Sonck sang the praises of the Nigerian star.

“If you take the totality into account, I can’t think of a better striker in Belgium at the moment,” says Sonck, as quoted by Sporza.

“You can play him in the foot, in the air, he can extend and is extremely dangerous in the penalty area. Whether the ball comes low or high, he is always close by in the box.”
“He has something like Jan Koller, but with better feet. He can head incredibly well and moves quite well. His feet are not bad, and he is not slow with his big steps.”

Since Onuachu made his Belgium Jupiler League debut on September 1, 2019, only Kaveh Rezaei (17) and Jonathan David (16) have scored more goals than the Nigerian (15).

Yet he will not be part of the party when Nigeria face Algeria and Tunisia on October 9th and 13th.

Head coach Gernot Rohr invited Onuachu’s Genk teammate, Cyriel Dessers – who has just two league goals – instead.

Crime / Man Inflicts Injuries On His Sister Over Their Father’s Property (graphic Photos by NAIJABOST(m): 7:46pm On Oct 02, 2020

A 59-year-old Nigerian woman identified as Maureen is currently in pain after her brother allegedly attacked her over their father’s property in Enugu state.

According to IgbereTV reports, the story was shared online by a Humanist group, Women’s Aid Collective WACOL, who said that the victim said their late father left the said property in her custody and made her promise to take care of the property and not transfer ownership to Mr Francis Egbujie. The victim however alleged that her brother has over time pestered her over the said property and demanded that she hand it over to him.

The group posted a picture of her battered head and wrote:

BROTHER ATTEMPTS TO KILL ELDER SISTER OVER FAMILY PROPERTY!!! On the 30th day of September 2020, WACOL legal clinic received a complaint from a 59 years old woman Mrs M, that her brother Mr Francis Egbujie from Ifu Ezike Udi, attempted to kill her by beating her with a stick and breaking her head over a family property.

She is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility. She noted that together with her younger sisters they immediately made a report to the Trans Ekulu police station but rather than arrest the perpetrator Mr Francis Egbujie, the police detained her sisters and even threatened to arrest her.

She also told WACOL that it is the proceed from the property that she uses to take care of their late elder brother’s children. Mrs M wants WACOL to assist her in getting justice and ensure that Mr Francis Egbujie faces the full wrath of the law for his devious acts against her.

WACOL has sent a petition to the Honourable Commissioner of Police, Enugu state requesting for a transfer of the case from the Trans Ekulu police station to the state CID for proper investigation.

WACOL will also provide palliative and support her treatment.”

Politics / President Donald Trump And First Lady Melania Trump Test Positive For Covid-19 by NAIJABOST(m): 8:08am On Oct 02, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump announced early Friday that he and his wife both tested positive for the coronavirus, an extraordinary development coming months into a global pandemic and in the final stretch of his reelection campaign in which he has flouted experts’ guidance on preventing the disease’s spread.

The diagnosis amounts to the most serious known health threat to a sitting American president in decades. At 74 years old and obese, Trump falls into the highest risk category for serious complications from the disease, which has killed more than 200,000 Americans and more than 1 million people worldwide.
His infection with the disease could prove destabilizing in an already fraught political climate, and stock market futures tumbled on news of Trump’s infection.
“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” Trump tweeted shortly before 1 a.m. Friday.
Later, the first lady wrote on Twitter that she and her husband were “feeling good.”
Trump was last seen in public on Thursday afternoon, returning to the White House after a fundraising trip to New Jersey. He did not appear ill, though he did not speak to reporters as he walked into his residence.
In a memo issued to reporters around 1 a.m. ET, the President’s physician, Navy Cmdr. Dr. Sean Conley, wrote that he received confirmation of the positive tests on Thursday evening.
“The President and First Lady are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence,” Conley wrote.
“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions,” Conley wrote, without elaborating what assistance was being provided to the White House.
“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any further developments,” he wrote.

The President had said late Thursday night that he planned to quarantine after one of his closest aides, Hope Hicks, tested positive for the infection, bringing the disease into his innermost circle. Earlier in the night, he had downplayed the virus’ continued spread.
“The end of the pandemic is in sight,” he said during prerecorded remarks at the annual Al Smith dinner, held virtually because of the health crisis.
Ignoring the science
While the White House frequently touts its extensive testing regimen for the President and those who come into close proximity with him — aides have deemed him the “most tested man in the country” — the infections underscored the shortcomings in relying on tests alone to prevent contagion.
Trump and many of his aides have eschewed practices like social distancing and mask wearing. At Tuesday evening’s presidential debate, the President mocked his rival, Democratic nominee Joe Biden, for frequently wearing a mask.
After announcing the President’s diagnosis, the White House issued a new schedule to reflect several canceled events on Friday, including a fundraiser in Washington and a campaign rally in Florida.
The scrubbed plans were the most immediate effects of the President’s diagnosis on the presidential campaign, which has centered largely on the pandemic and the President’s response to it. Trump has frequently sought to paint a rosy picture of the current situation, including just hours before he announced his diagnosis.
Trump has also repeatedly insisted the country is “rounding the corner” on the disease and claimed the virus would “disappear,” though even health experts within his own administration said those claims did not reflect reality.
Getting infected himself with coronavirus will do little to further his claims that the disease is waning, and undercut his push for states to reopen schools and businesses. Trump has complained during recent rallies about Democratic governors who have maintained strict lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus.
At-risk category
Trump has blatantly disregarded medical recommendations from his own coronavirus task force during the pandemic, proceeding with a busy schedule of packed campaign rallies. Most recently, his supporters stuffed into events in Minnesota and Pennsylvania.
Those events appear on hold for now as the President stays at the White House. Long guarded about his medical history, the President’s most recent physical showed he weighed 243 pounds — considered obese for his height. Still, Conley said he was in “very good health” in a readout of the exam.

Aside from Hicks, several of the President’s aides have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began ravaging the country earlier this year. In May, two White House staffers, including a member of the Navy who serves as one of Trump’s personal valets, tested positive for the virus, and in July a cafeteria employee on the White House grounds tested positive as well. The vice president’s press secretary has tested positive, as did the President’s national security adviser Robert O’Brien. The President confirmed a fourth positive case on White House grounds last month.
Trump has previously expressed concern that aides contracting the coronavirus would undercut his message that the outbreak is waning and states should accelerate reopening, according to a person who had spoken with him.
And he asked in the spring how it was possible that one of his valets — responsible for handling his food and drink — could have come into contact with him.
The White House has since gone to great lengths to shield Trump and Vice President Mike Pence from the outbreak, even as they travel to states where cases are surging.
Close aide tests positive
Hicks has traveled with the President multiple times recently, including to the debate in Cleveland on Tuesday, and was seen boarding Marine One, along with several other of the President’s closest aides — Jared Kushner, Dan Scavino and Nicholas Luna — none of whom wore masks, on Wednesday as Trump was heading to a campaign rally in Minnesota.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines state that a 14-day quarantine should take place after the last known exposure to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19. This is because the incubation period for the novel coronavirus can be up to two weeks.
Trump, in his Fox News interview, speculated that Hicks could have contracted the virus from an interaction with a supporter.
“She’s a very warm person. She has a hard time, when soldiers and law enforcement comes up to her, you know, she wants to treat them great, not say, ‘Stay away, I can’t get near you.’ It’s a very, very tough disease,” he said.
A source close to Hicks told CNN that she is experiencing symptoms and is back in Washington. A source familiar with Hicks’ symptoms describes her as being achy and feeling pretty bad. CNN has reached out to Hicks for comment.
“The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously,” White House spokesman Judd Deere told CNN in a statement when asked about the level of contact between Hicks and Trump.
The White House made no mention of Hicks by name, nor did it confirm she had tested positive.
“White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling,” Deere added.
Some White House staffers who were in close proximity were notified of the positive test result today, one official said.
This story has been updated with further developments Friday morning.
CNN’s Paul LeBlanc contributed to this report.

Politics / Nigeria At 60: Jonathan Drops Critical Message For Nigerians by NAIJABOST(m): 9:17am On Oct 01, 2020

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has told Nigerians not to lose hope in their nation even as he charged them to be purposeful in playing their own role towards making the country great.

The former President stated this in a goodwill message to Nigerians as the nation marks 60th Independence Day on Thursday.

He noted that the journey of Nigeria has been that of mixed fortunes, adding that it requires the commitment of all citizens to build a strong and prosperous nation.

He said: “Like many other great nations, our journey has been that of mixed fortunes. Our nation has been through periods of progress and times of setbacks. We have experienced eras of strength, unity and faith as well as seasons of weakness, trials and despair. Despite these challenges, we have remained as one, and nurtured our democracy to 21 unbroken years.

“I therefore urge us to make investments that will shore up the democratic gains and work towards building strong and virile institutions. We need to harness the greatness that lies within our diversity and the strength of our population, to recreate and build the Nigeria we desire. We must de-emphasize our fault lines and concentrate on the silver lining within our lands.

“Every great nation is built on the patriotic sacrifices of its citizens. We should show love, unity and understanding in times of trials and never lose hope in the presence of despair. This is the spirit that is required to build our nation, to enable us live in the land of our collective dreams.”

Dr. Jonathan also paid tribute to those patriots who had paid the supreme price towards advancing the course of our nationhood, stressing that they will continue to be Nigeria’s heroes.

Below is full text of the Goodwill Message:

NIGERIA AT 60: WE SHOULD NOT DESPAIR
I congratulate all Nigerians as we celebrate our 60th Independence Anniversary. Today is another unique day in our nation’s history. It marks six decades of the anniversary of our self-rule. It is an occasion that commemorates our political freedom.

Sixty years ago, we made a procession of victory, as we bade farewell to colonialism and emancipated our lands from the clutches of servitude. It was a day of hope, promises and great expectations amplified by the reality of freedom and the vista of vast opportunities.

We may not have met all the expectations and fulfilled all the promises that came with our independence. It may seem that we are punching below our weight in terms of the rate of development and economic growth but we have recorded some progress, triumphed over challenges and excelled in many spheres. In sports, entertainment, arts, education and even in politics; The Green – White – Green has flown with pride, honour and dignity in the comity of nations, in the last 60 years.

Like many other great nations, our journey has been that of mixed fortunes. Our nation has been through periods of progress and times of setbacks. We have experienced eras of strength, unity and faith as well as seasons of weakness, trials and despair. Despite these challenges, we have remained as one, and nurtured our democracy to 21 unbroken years.

Nation building is a journey and everyone has a role to play for us to arrive safely in our desired destination. Today, we are confronted with numerous challenges and we require the commitment of all citizens to stabilize this nation. As a democrat, I believe that democracy remains the best platform for nation building, as it affords every citizen the opportunity to have a say on how our country should be governed.

I therefore urge us to make investments that will shore up the democratic gains and work towards building strong and virile institutions. We need to harness the greatness that lies within our diversity and the strength of our population, to recreate and build the Nigeria we desire. We must de-emphasize our fault lines and concentrate on the silver lining within our lands.

Every great nation is built on the patriotic sacrifices of its citizens. We should show love, unity and understanding in times of trials and never lose hope in the presence of despair. This is the spirit that is required to build our nation, to enable us live in the land of our collective dreams.

Today Nigeria and the rest of the world are going through a major health crisis, that has continued to threaten the stability of states and their institutions as well as the lives and livelihoods of citizens. We must never give up, no matter the challenges we face today. We should not live in despair of opportunities lost or dreams deferred.

Let us seize the opportunities that this pandemic presents to recreate and build a stronger nation. Our success as a nation lies in the fervency of our faith, the strength of our unity and commitment to our national creed: unity and faith, peace and progress. Let us work in solidarity to ensure that this national creed does not become a mere slogan but a lived experience for all.

Dear Compatriots, as we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of our independence, we should recognize that not many are privileged to witness this moment as some have paid the supreme price defending and upholding our nation’s unity and advancing the course of our nationhood. I wish to pay a special tribute to these patriots who will continue to be our heroes.

And to all other Nigerians, this is not a time to lose faith in our nation. We should be steadfast in service; promoting peace, unity and hope. Let us sustain the national conversations in search of equity, justice and unity and progress.

Happy Independence Anniversary!

Crime / How Ritualist Under The Bridges Of Lagos Sells Human Body Parts At Will by NAIJABOST(m): 4:33pm On Sep 30, 2020

You often hear people say they didn’t come to count bridges in Lagos. Perhaps it sounds like a joke but that is the truth of the matter. Bridges are not just fancy sights you stand and observe from a distance. All manner of businesses are transacted under the bridges in Lagos.

Nigerians are familiar with the purported mad man, Clifford Orji, who used to live under the bridge around Toyota near Oshodi, Lagos. But like Clifford Orji, not all madmen are really mad. Some just put up a show to perpetrate crime and go unnoticed.

To refresh memories, the celebrated mad man who used to live under the bridge near Oshodi turned out to be a human parts merchant and cannibal. When the truth of his situation come into the open, he was arrested and charged before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate Court in Lagos on February 19, 1999. Back then, the GSM was not in existence, but Clifford had not only a 090 NITEL mobile phone of that era, a cheque of N80,000 was also reportedly found on him.

At the time he was arrested, police had reasons to believe he was insane, mentally unstable and psychologically handicapped but that was never proven. With Clifford Orji, there were more questions than answers. Ever since the Orji saga, there have been characters similar to the celebrated mad man around bridges and under fly-overs in Nigeria with all sorts of strange and unrelated items found in the custody of such characters.

In November 2012, Joshua Akindele,56, who hailed from Etokia Local Government in Ogun State, was spotted when he crawled into a hole under the Gbaji bridge, which he used as a business outlet for selling human parts.

He later confessed that he had been into cannibalism and ritual killing business for 15 years, after being introduced to the business by a friend who convinced him to stop riding “Okada” which, he claimed, profited him a little, but could not sustain him.

He also confessed that he was the brain behind killings within the village using plywoods to subdue his human preys, and dragging them into the hole before cutting them into pieces for food and business with ritualists.

In his statement to the police, Joshua had stated, “I have been in this business for the past 15 years after my friend advised me to stop riding okada and to join him in ritual killing and cannibalism. Whenever I see somebody walking alone without being conscious of who is watching, I walk slowly up to him and hit him with big plywood on his heads after which he falls down unconscious. I then drag him into the hole and use a knife to cut him into parts which I sell to some churches and some ready buyers who indulge in rituals for easy money, and some times when I feel hungry late in the night, I eat some parts for food”.

He confessed further that he sold the parts as follows: Heads N7,500, breast N1,500, penis N1,000, hands and legs for N3,500.

Amos, a member of a vigilante group in the area, had alerted the group and palace guards of the Baale of Ajara Topa community to monitor Joshua.

He said he was on his routine watch when he noticed him (Joshua) crawling into the hole with a rice bag, and quickly alerted other members who confronted him with a gun and ordered him to drop and open what he was carrying. “When he did, they discovered rotten human part: Skulls, legs, hands, breasts e.t.c.”

At Egbe bridge, between Ikotun and Ejigbo, early this year, two persons, one of them, said to be a prophet with a white garment church, were arrested following the discovery of fresh human parts in their custody. Policemen attached to Ikotun Division on patrol accosted two men with a ‘Ghana-must-go bag’. When they requested to know the content of the bag, one of the men bolted.

After opening the bag, fresh human parts were found inside two containers. The recovered parts included five fingers, a human heart, liver, kidney and intestines, all concealed in some plastics filled with water.

The plastics were tied inside separate polythene bags and kept in the bag. The suspects had also added soup ingredients such as salt, tomatoes and two pairs of bathroom slippers in a separate nylon bag which they placed on top of the human parts. During interrogation, the suspect, identified as Kunle Olaide, claimed the bag was given to him by his friend who bolted when they were stopped.

On further interrogation, it was discovered that Kunle and his fleeing partner slept in the church the previous night. Kunle confessed to be coming from the church located in Egbe area Lagos when they were accosted by the policemen. His confessional statement led to the arrest of the prophet of the church.

Under the same Egbe bridge are all manner of spiritual churches where women are targetted for spiritual businesses. A female broadcaster working on the menace of spiritual homes had undertaken a visit to the under bridge at Egbe where she said she was rushed at by muscled men who wanted to render their services.

Katie told newsmen that she was surrounded that, for a moment, she thought she was going to be robbed or raped. “ All manner of youngmen surrounded me asking how they could help me.

They asked if I wanted spiritual bath to attract a rich suitor or a millionaire boyfriend; if I wanted a spiritual bath for success in business or promotion in my workplace or if there was somebody I wanted them to deal with.

Out of curiousity, I started asking them the price for each service and they started reeling out all manner of prices that their leader stopped them and, authotitatively, demanded what I wanted.

I now explained that my boyfriend abandoned me for my best friend and they asked again what treatment I wanted, whether I wanted him back or for them to deal with him.

They now started telling me the price for each required service. They said I should pay N7,500 to have a spiritual bath that would attract him back to me.

From a distant, I sighted two naked women being bathed with leaves by some funny looking men in a shallow stream under the bridge. I told them that I had only N4,000 which they collected and asked me to return with the balance to see the baba that would administer the spiritual bath.

I had this feeling that if not for the money I gave them, they would have done something sinister to me. That was how I left the place and never went back.”
