Health / What's In Your Food? by Naijahealthnut: 10:03pm On Aug 07, 2017 |
Let me get right to it. Things have changed quite a bit of recent, wouldn’t you say? Our lives are moving at top speed. We hardly have the time for alot of things these days. Time is of the essence in this day and age. We look for the fastest ways to get things done. Sadly one area of our lives that matters quite a bit and should never be compromised has been sorely afflicted by this phenomenon. I’m talking about, eating. We, for the most part eat on the go or sometimes do not eat at all but that’s a story for another day. Today I’m going to be focusing on eating on the go. Now, check this out, you wake up extra early to get yourself ready for work. Hit the loo and shower .Your now empty stomach cries out for some sustenance but in your rush, you brush it aside, get dressed and out the door. You board the bus, exchange glances with sisi dimples, the PYT in the hot, hot mini and are on your merry way. Now stuck in traffic on the bus, your stomach growls angrily in a final attempt to save itself and inadvertently you from the pangs of hunger. You look back at sisi dimples and she looks you dead in the eyes(yes o,she hear am,lol ) To save yourself from any further embarrassing outbursts by your stomach, you flag down a food monger selling something in a glistening plastic wrap and some mysterious drink that you’ve never heard of, you take a quick sip after paying for your ‘food’, ahh…It’s sweet enough to put one in a diabetic coma..nice…..just the way you like it. You’ve discovered your new favorite drink. You look at the name and make a mental note. You now use your inner voice to have a tete a tete with your stomach, “oya, rumble again make I hia”. Bros, why nau? Ehn? Why would you let a total stranger nourish your body. You’ll probably throw away the home made meal your neighbor offers you incase said neighbor is an agent of the witches and wizards from your villa but here you are gulping down food from someone you’ve never seen before, is it good like that? Now, I’m not by any means telling you to eat your neighbor’s food o, I don’t know them(they could actually be agent’s of dem witches dem, lol) but how is the one you just ate any better? Oh, it has NAFDAC # ko, Okay,I see. Have you seen videos of people showing the fake food they’ve been buying of late? Rubbery rice and waxy fruit? Okay, what measures do we take to make sure that the food on our streets and reaching our people is safe(forget about nutritious)? NONE!!! I don’t even want to go into how porous our borders are. Anyone could wake up one day and decide to start selling food roadside with zero knowledge or certifications on how to go about it and this my friends is how we unknowingly poison ourselves and loved ones…slowly. I may put a bit of humor in my write ups to make the more fun and bearable to read as it is quite a bit of information (even I do not like to read too much) but this message is critical as matters such as these do shake the root of our existance. Do me a favor friends, start looking at your food lables. I guarantee you that you will find tasty ingredients like: Sodium nitrate, BHA/ BHT, Brominated vegetable oil, Sodium benzonate, Azodicarbonamide, Propylene glycol , to mention but a few. Now do these sound like things you will find in your farm, where food should originate from or more like petroleum by products? The truth of the matter at hand is this, no one cares more about your health than you. The big companies that sell food to you have only one thing on their minds, profits and in trying to minimize their costs, cut corners that shouldn’t be and the consequences abound in Nigeria. It’s not the witches and wizards in our village’s that are working over time to cause the increased cases of kidney failure and cancer in our land but I’ll bet you a good amount of money that it’s tied to what we eat. How do we fix this? By going back to our farms and growing our own food organically at least till our government starts caring enough about the quality of food we import from God knows where for we are afterall but what we eat. Stay healthy my friends. -Naija healthnut. |
Health / How Are Your Kidneys? by Naijahealthnut: 6:59pm On Aug 07, 2017 |
Hello Naija, How's it going? So you wake up this morning, get ready for work. Put on your killer outfit. Your outfit's on fleek? you're killing it? Make up lit? Outfit on point....Got your daily dose of likes an praises on all the popular social media outlets . You're at the office now, strutting your stuff to the music playing in your head, the walk to your desk feels like walking down a runway in Milan; quite intoxicating, I bet. Must be feeling pretty darn good right about now eh? Ahh,this is the life, it's going to be a good one, what could go wrong today? Well, permit me to rain on your parade a little bit .... make I pour small sand sand in your garri. You're looking so fresh, so clean on the outside, yes?...Outkast would be proud abi? Answer me this though, are your insides on fleek too Your liver game on point? Does your bladder tell your kidneys, dang!!! Looking good neighbors? Howmany likes has your heart given you today? Zero? as in, nothing, nothing? Hmm, It's no secret that ailments that were once considered old people's ailments are afflicting young naijarians everyday, people dropping dead all around the place, unexplained mystery illness just popping up like jack in the box. The witches and wizards must be working overtime. They must be fanning themselves and their cauldrons with these poor souls pictures onlookers would say but, what's this ? When reached for comment, The witches and wizard association(TWWA) spokesperson vehiminently denied any involvement and said though flattered, we give them too much credit as they too are not immune to these 'attacks' and have lost a number of members to these strange happenings/occurances. So what could the problem be? The creator having an encore of the plauges of egypt without warning? I hope not o (Hay!) Let me fill you in. The world has become a global village and Africa, especially Naija seems to be the next market global companies want to break into given the population. Now I'm not against globalization but one thing I'm against is how porous our boundaries are and how easy it is to import anything into our dear country without strict inspections and screenings especially considering that we import something as vital as food from foreign countries who may not have our best interests at heart. Food is the easiest way to grow or ruin a nation in my opinion but I think I'm getting ahead of myself. So, I've said all this to say: Wake up people and pay attention !! Watch what you eat......Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food "(na Hippocrates talk am o).We only get one body a life time, cherish it, protect it and keep it in good working order and see it carry you well when you're a little older and you hair turns grey. How you look on the inside does matter more than you look on the outside. Your outward beauty should be a reflection of how you look on the inside (literally) as such beauty is more than skin deep and cannot be found in a makeup pallette. Call me The Naija Health nut . I intend to use this blog to share information I've gathered through the years with you, my friends, so we could all live healthier lives. Don't get me wrong, none of us will make if out of life alive as death is inevitable at some point but we could all the same live long ,fulfilled, healthy lives as nature intended. Stay healthy my friends..... while at it, why not check out my blog : https://naijahealthnut./ 1 Like |
