Religion / Death Sentence: Supreme Court Decides Rev King's Fate On Feb. 26 by NaijaPle1: 10:24pm On Dec 10, 2015
Read the press statement from Lagos state government below...
The Supreme Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday fixed February 26, 2016 for judgment in the appeal filed by the General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Reverend King challenging the judgement of a Lagos High Court sentencing him to death by hanging. The apex court presided over by Justice Walter Onoghen adjourned for judgment after entertaining arguments from counsel to prosecution and defence in the matter.
Lagos State Attorney general and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who appeared before the Supreme Court alongside Mrs. Idowu Alakija, the Director of Public Prosecution and other Senior Counsel in the State, urged the court to dismiss the appeal and uphold the judgment of the lower courts.

Ezeugo was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegation but was sentenced to death by the then Justice Joseph Oyewole of Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on January 11, 2007 for the murder of one of his church members, Ann Uzoh.

Justice Oyewole is now a judge of Appeal Court sitting in the Calabar division.
The Lagos State Government had said that the convict poured petrol on the deceased and five other persons and that Uzoh died on August 2, 2006; 11 days after the act was perpetrated on her.
Specifically, Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the attempted murder and death by hanging for the offence of murder.

Dissatisfied, Ezeugo challenged the verdict before the Court of Appeal in Lagos, but the appeal was thrown out.
’’I hereby rule that the prosecution effectively discharged the burden of proof on it. This appeal is devoid of any basis and accordingly fails.
“The judgment of the High Court is hereby affirmed, and the conviction imposed on the appellant, (which is death by hanging) is also affirmed,” Justice Fatimo Akinbami who read the judgement held. The two other members of the panel of Justices, Amina Augie and Ibrahim Saulawa concurred with the lead judgement.
Again, Ezeugo not being satisfied with the verdict, approach the Supreme Court, and urged that the judgment be upturned.
The apex court has now reserved judgment.

Politics / We Will Create ICT Hubs Across Nigeria, Says Osinbajo by NaijaPle1: 5:03pm On Dec 10, 2015
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Thursday that one of the cardinal objectives of Federal Government’s ‘’change agenda’’ was to create Information Communication Technology hubs across the nation. He stated this at the signing a Memorandum of Understanding on ‘’ICT for Change Empowerment Programme’’ between the Federal Government and Huawei Technologies Co. Nig Ltd at the State House.
“We are looking at developing existing hubs and to see how we can empower those who are already working in the various ICT hubs,’’ Osinbajo said. According to him, some of the ICT organisations were already growing into a silicon valley in Yaba, Lagos, and many people are engaged in programming and developing applications.

He said that the Federal Government would expand the scope of technology and incubate the start-ups of young people to advance ICT. He said that the development of ICT was an opportunity for people to get quick and decent jobs to enhance their lives and the economy. He commended the group for the partnership with the government, and assured that the government would work with it to achieve success.
The vice president said that the government was creating an opportunity to ease business for entrepreneurs, adding that the country must move up in the business index by opening up the market. He said the Federal Government would encourage not only the selling of products but also their local manufacture so that the large population in the country could occupy the middle class.

He said that it was an opportunity for China to improve on its technology transfer, being a strategic partner with the Federal Government and that the effort would lead to greater prosperity for both China and Nigeria. Osinbajo hailed the ladies who qualified to go to China for ICT training, saying that it was the objective of the administration to advance the girl-child education and women in business because of their large population.

“If you don’t engage women in business and education, we will be shooting ourselves in the feet as women have a very great role to play in nation building. “Chinese Ambassador has proved to us that he is not only an ambassador but a brother, because he has stuck to us very closely and has taken every opportunity to work with Nigerian government to achieve our objective,’’ he said.

He also commended Huawei technologies for the manner it was advancing technology development globally, remarking that knowledge was key ‘’and only the knowledge society will succeed’’. The vice president said he was excited about “certain attitude the young generation has about technology’’, adding that it was time for young people to be trained to imbibe ICT and the entire technology field.
Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, said that the trainees would be evenly selected and urged Huawei group to increase the number of Nigerian trainers for the project to save cost of sending trainees to China. Also, Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, in his remarks, said that the Chinese had blazed the trail in advancing technology in Nigeria.

Ngige described China as ‘’friends in prosperity and friends in poverty’’ as both countries were eager to lift the unemployed out of poverty. He said that the MOU would create jobs in line with government’s objectives and requested that the number of trainees be increased to accommodate more youth.
On his part, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Gu Xiaojie, said that based on existing cordial relations between China and Nigeria, his country would be part of the change agenda in Nigeria. He said that his country was ready to develop the economic cooperation with Nigeria through 10 key cooperation plans, including industrialization, agriculture, infrastructure, financial services, rail development and public health.

Politics / Agitation For Biafra Legitimate, But … – Lai Mohammed by NaijaPle1: 4:56pm On Dec 10, 2015
By CALEB AYANSINA

ABUJA – The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Thursday, called on religious leaders across the country, particularly those in the south-east region to appeal to those agitating for the republic of Biafra to let peace reign in the region for even development.
Lai Mohammed, who was speaking at the Peace Conversation with religious leaders organized by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), in Abuja, urged them to de-radicalise those who had been exposed to violent religion views.
He said it is the duty of religious leaders to preach undiluted messages of their faiths and making their followers see the reasons Nigeria has to stay together as an indivisible entity.
“You, our revered religious leaders, have a great role to
play in this respect. Top on the list of these roles is the need to de-radicalize those who have been exposed to extremist and violent view of religion, especially in the North-east.

“It is important for you, our religious leaders, to highlight the pristine and unadulterated version of the two dominant religious faith, Christianity and Islam, to remind all the adherents of both faith that nowhere did any of them preach hatred and violence,” he said.
The Minister said though the agitation for Biafra was legitimate, they should take appropriate channel to ventilate their discontent, while allowing the government address the issues raised, advising religious leaders to serve as appealing voice to aggrieved people.
He said; “At a time of agitations in some parts of the country by persons who believe their interests have not been well catered for in the Federation over the years, our religious leaders can serve as an appealing voice to these aggrieved citizens.

“They can help them understand that while they have the right to ventilate their discontent, there is the need to do so using only the appropriate and established channels while allowing the government time to address the issues they raise without constituting themselves as a threat to the peace of their neighbour.”
Stressing the necessity for peace to reign in the country, the minister said the level of destruction in the north-east region is inexplicable for the government to allow another set of people to plunge another part of the country into war.

“The kind of destruction and devastation that I saw in those areas convinced me, more than ever, that the perpetrators are not adherents of any religion but a bunch of mad people.
“Our religious leaders must make this point loud and clear for the benefit of the gullible ones who may
want to believe that those perpetrating the heinous killings in the North-east subscribe to any faith,” he said.

Lai Mohammed explained that with the effort of the Nigerian Military to restore peace to the troubled region, it beholds on all and sundry to join hands with the government to promote peace in the country.
“The military is doing their bit to restore peace to the affected communities. What is missing, however, is the civilian component of the war, the need for all Nigerians to support the military and also own the war,” he appealed.
