Career / Why You Can't Get A Job by NaijaPosh(f): 5:38pm On Jan 26, 2015
I'm trying to understand the issues that people face when they are looking for job to help give career advice. Some questions I have are does jobberman help you get a job? Which websites do you use to find a job? Finally what is the number one issues you face applying for a job?
Jobs/Vacancies / Creative Ways To Get A Job by NaijaPosh(f): 9:27am On Oct 27, 2011
In an economy where the competition is tighter than ever, it is important that you take on geurrilla tactics to stand out from the rest.

Sometimes I ponder, and try to articulate how I got to this point in my life. I guess I really never thought about it till I sat down to write these words. On May 8th 2010 I graduated from a small historically black institution called Bethune Cookman University. I had the opportunity to go to a more known school but I opted out because I received a full scholarship to attend BCU.

I took all the steps in the right directions to secure a great job after I graduated. I joined one of the best sororities in the world Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. I was in the honors program, and president of the honor society for my major. I even was the only one granted at my school an internship at Target for their executive leadership program, and despite all these great things it was not enough.

Once you get in the real world thousands will be just as competitive as you are. They will have all the right accolades with good grades, internships, and members of great associations. In this tough economy you must rise above the occasion to do something that will make you stand out, that will make a person say wow I must hire that person.

After graduation I was applying to countless jobs. A lot of times they will email me back, “great resume” or “come in for an interview”, but it seem nothing could stick. So I took a chance and took a summer internship with a small company called Partnership I did not get paid, but the experience was tremendous. Not only did I acquire the skills to write proposals, but I also learned more about the emerging markets and the global world around me. After a summer internship I felt that I was prepared to move on to a paid position. This is how I arrived at my current job, The Whitaker Group. The Whitaker group is a premiere business advisory firm, consulting US companies who want to expand to Africa. I knew this place would be my dream job, but I also knew that same dream would hold true for many others as well. I thought to myself how can I get my application to outshine others, and finally I came up with the idea. I did my research on the company and wrote a cover letter that reflected that. After I put together the cover letter, and resume I bought a beautiful coffee mug and a pretty pink bag for it to go in. I folded up my resume and cover letter and placed it in the cup and then took the present to the office. I dropped off the present in person and told the secretary this present is for the CEO and just let her know it was from me.

After a few hours I got a call from The Whitaker group, and they told me they wanted to interview me right away. I had an interview with the human resource manager in my, and then I was told the CEO wanted to see me. As I sat down in her office she looked at me and said, “I normally do not meet the people being interviewed, but I just had to meet the girl who was creative enough to send me her resume in a form of a gift” Then she proceeded to say. “I wish you all the best and maybe I will see you soon”. A week later I was told I got the job, and now we fast forward to February, and I am still here doing very well. I am not saying this technique may work for everyone, but sometimes extreme measures have to be taken in times such as these. I leave you with a few pointers to take away with you as you are venturing out for employment.

• Always do your research on the companies you are applying for. It is good to research these companies because if you are granted an interview with a manager, they will be impressed when you have an extensive knowledge of who they are and what services they provide.

• Always include a cover letter with your resume. A cover letter can showcase some areas the employer may have not been able to see in your resume.

• Think of out of the box ways to get employers attention. Even if you do not go my route of obtaining a job leave them with a catchy phrase at the end of your cover letter or even personally deliver your resume and cover letter to the company in which you are applying for.

• It is okay to take an unpaid internship for a short period in order to gain experience. If your situation allows it take a few months to do an unpaid internship. Sometimes these internships give you the most experience and it can lead you to a paid position.

• After an interview send a thank you letter. Most people do not send a thank you letter after an interview, and this can be another way to stand
out from other applicants. Tell them thank you for interviewing with me and then highlight something that was discussed in the interview.

• Lastly never give up. With the economy changing and the workforce getting more competitive, getting a job will be tougher. If you attack your job search with the right attitude sooner or later the RIGHT job will be yours!!!

DRY YOUR TEARS O NIGERIA by Michael, written today from Port Harcourt Rivers State (http://www.thenigerianeagle.com/social/81-michael/profile)

The river that flows from your eyes

Have gotten to my feet

And had made my toes wet

And your cries have I heard

From my home up on the sky

And I have heard you

So your tears will I dry

For no more will your children cry

For I will give you relief

Like the sun on this rubble after rain

Now hop on the train

All you have to do is believe

Because Nigeria has become my footstool

For each one of you have I made my tool

To make you the giant whom you are

Strategically have I positioned you

To be the trigger to pull

For Africa to be full

And for my people to be satisfied

Oh, dry your tears my beloved

For I will wipe away those on the way

That act as a blockade

To make you away from the right path sway

From the original place, I want you to stay

All you have to do is follow my way

Do you know where the living God is?

Knock on his door

And preserve yourself as an ore

To be refined to riches not sore

For I will rekindle your splint

And give you light

I will replace your clay spoons with the one made of gold

And give you leaders and not looters

In unity, will I give you dignity

Buns will I supply and not guns

My child be courageous and bold

Rejoice for I will water your land

The desires of heart will I give you in your hand

From my home above will I shower you with Mercy

Open your mouth and give praises to God

Cos that’s only what he needs in return

And I will not let your knees peel again

For mountains again will you not visit

I have heard your cries and so receive cheers

Lift up your heads oh ye gates

For the king of glory has come to stay

O Ye wicked run to hiding

Because the sword of the lord is in action

To purge his footstool of tyranny in democracy

And get rid of cunning and subtle leaders

Dry your tears, Nigeria

The gift, which I gave you

I want you to use it judiciously now and without fight

I have put my hand and so no more bloodshed

Gird up your loins and race on my command

Politics / Who Is The Most Corrupt Government Official Of All Time? by NaijaPosh(f): 3:46pm On Dec 01, 2010
Taiwo Adewole was one of the three Nigerian youths who met with President Barack Obama last August for the African Youth Leadership Forum. He is the winner of the Rehab Plus Innovation, a United Kingdom International competition for Africa-2006, was also nominated by the International Biographical Centre, England for the 2007 Scientist of the year and selected among the “Top 100 of Our Generations’. An independent environmentalist, he hosted the 2007 World Environment Day in Nigeria co-sponsored by the Lagos State Ministry of Environment. He is a renowned environmental consultant with several years of broad-range experience in the industry, Taiwo Adewole is presently the Chief Executive Officer of Taiwo Adewole and Associates Limited. In this interview with Chika Uwazie, a contributor to the Nigerian Eagle discusses the critical issues that are affecting Nigeria and its citizens.

What factors in the country do you think are causing its financial corruption among the Upper class?

Adewole: The greatest problem is leadership. Are there any leaders in Nigeria today with clean hand? Just name any leaders that have a clean hand in Nigeria, that is why you find out that the people ruling this country in the last 50 yrs are less than 50 people out of the 150 million people in Nigeria. How many leaders can come out openly to say that they want to probe the past leaders including past ministers? How many of their children school in Nigeria? How many of them receive medical treatment in Nigeria?

What do you think about the Nigerian Government creating better funded, free public secondary education?

As I seen that the topic has been taken to so many places let me say that as an original poster I pasted it for one to further educate ourselves in the diaspora about moving back home and secondly to see if people are actually interested. It is not by force that you come back to Nigeria as many have stated. This is a service meaning you choose whether or not you actually use it. As I and few people understand you will reap the harvest of big opportunities that others may not see. Its sad to say that so many other countries see our potential before the Nigerians themselves and that is due to lack of patriotism. I dream big and god hard and I know that Nigeria has load of potential. Anyways for those that are interested in gaining more information on current trend in Africa business, governance, and investment everyone is always welcome to my blog and able to comment on your thoughts there.

exactly to the last poster. Most of the people commenting on this post are giving nonsensical answers. I didn't ask about how you feel about Nigeria, bottom line we know the issues that are occurring in Nigeria and you either want to solve the issues are not. I am an optimist and my life as being one has been more gains then loses. And for those that are speaking about the ambassador. Each one is different and comes in with a different attitude. He wants to personally tell everyone that this one actually listen. He may not always take your request seriously because of how it your request is proposed to him, but he will give you the chance to explain your point. The fact that he took time to listen to little old me and arrange a second meeting to get this problem solved means he we are moving toward progress. There are a lot of Nigerians out there who are doing good things and not a lot of them are being thanked enough for their tireless efforts. So unless you have something meaningful to post about this topic please take it to another forum.

I have not written anything that is putting down other people. One of the writers was saying that I was unemployed all I was saying is I actually have credentials and reasons for why I am posting this question. anyways the service is to close the gap of the brain drain in Nigeria. In the next few months we hope to be in contact with serveral companies ideally American companies who are looking for African professionals that got a degree overseas to give them careers in a variety of professions. They would like any other expatriate pay for their ticket back home, equip them with lodging, as well in some cases transportation. In America there will be conferences for those looking for jobs back in Nigeria and a website that will be a resources for those looking for jobs and seminars that will educate the diaspora about the opportunities back home.

TO Kobojunkie i THINK YOU HAVE TO FIRST FORM A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE AMBASSADOR or anyone that you speak to who can make something occur. And also you have to actually give him a tangible project. Sure anyone can give an idea and then hope for something to come out of it, but if you actually give him deliverable than it is harder for you to turn someone down. I am not saying something big will come out of it, but at least I spoke my peace. Also I have other resources he is just one out of many people that can actually do something for me.

One I work with a premiere African Trade and investment firm in Washington DC. So please get all of your facts straight before you being to talk. This forum is for people looking to go back home not people like you who is happy with their 9-5 job to come home and never amount to anything. I am actually meeting with the Nigerian Ambassador tomorrow in order for a real change to occur and I laugh at your stupidity to think that this is open for argument.

Well the issue is abroad is ware immigrants are coming to the country so its easier to adapt. Nigeria is a harder terrain and so many people I know in the US want to go home but really don't know how
Travel / Re: Nigerians In The Diaspora Would You Move Back Home ? by NaijaPosh(f): 10:28pm On Oct 25, 2010
I think you misunderstood the question. A lot of young Nigerians want to go home and work, to help the economy. People such as myself who were not born in Nigeria it is not that easy for it to happen. Not all of us have those connects with people back in Nigeria to make this happen.

Well for the first reply I am aware and done my research but ours has a different spin to it. This group actually has many functions so the job post is just one of many functions. Also I noticed a lot of them are limited information as well as this will only recruit top resumes which will give an incentive for companies to go through us so it is a win win situation. but thanks for the advice.
