Culture / Re: What Were Yorubas Called Before The 19th Century? by naylow: 2:33pm On Mar 14, 2007
very good question and one I think many have not asked. My take on this is that the Yoruba did not see themselves as one unified people until recently so there was no overall description for us as such. As you stated the word Yoruba was allegedly coined by the Hausa although some scholars would beg to differ on this matter. I will look into this further and get back to you with either an answer or a point of reference for you to continue your research.
Health / Re: Using Bleaching Cream To Improve Your Appearance by naylow: 2:21pm On Mar 14, 2007
I have always said that the desire to bleach amongst African is a sign of a deep-rooted psychological problem and anyone think about going down this route should think again. Bleaching can never enhance your beauty but highlight your flaws and seldom does it make you beautiful. Have you seen Kofi Olomide and his like recently?

Even our own Kollington Ayinla bleached his skin and looks no better for it. A sign of a brainwashed society I say.

Which brings me to the question why we describe ourselves as black when in truth we are brown complexioned. This is timely because a friend of mine sent me an article he will be posting on some sites concerning this question.

Religion / Re: Speaking In Tongues: What's That All About? by naylow: 8:04pm On Feb 19, 2007
Here we go with the ignorant Nigerian mentality o! There is speaking in tongues and speaking gibberish and Nigerians have mistaken incoherent babble for the language of the holy ghost.

I remember watching the most false of prophets called Anwuzia (Zoe Ministries) some years ago on TV where he went into one 'iski ribababa bobobo' and I thought he was joking until a cousin said he was speaking in tongues. I coud not believe it. But then in a land of gullibles little wonder Nigerians and there money are easily parted.

speaking in tongues ko, speaking in nose ni
Politics / Re: Pat Utomi For President In 2007? by naylow: 7:53pm On Feb 19, 2007
To all objecting to a Pat Utomi presidency I woud say you are all defeatist. You've already written off he man without giving him a chance. The problem with our Nigerian thinkers has been their inability to think beyond their noses and this is an area where Pat Utomi excels. He is a thinking man and an astute businessman at that and it is for these reasons that I will support his running for Aso Rock.

This might be the revolution we have been waiting for.
Religion / Race Or Religion: Which Is More Important by naylow: 4:00pm On Jan 25, 2007
Although this question applies to all Africans, I think the make-up of this forum means that the question will be posed to my Nigerian brothers and sisters. The issue simply is to establish whether race is more important than religion or vice versa. The reason why I ask this question is because Africans (Nigerians in general) have been brainwashed to such a state that they place more emphasis on God through religion rather than God in race. It was during a conversation with a friend that I realised how deep down the abyss we were when he suggested that: The Yoruba man or woman practicing Islam would sometimes opt for an muslim name when in reality the name is Arabic. Names like Taofeek, Nurudeen, Tajudeen, Rashidat, Kudirat, Fathia, Sadiq and so on are common in Yoruba states. This is the same for African-Americans who having rid themselves of their slave-names would 9 out of 10 times adopt a muslim name and I wonder why this is so.

Many would argue that religion superseds race any day because by practicing religion one gets closer to God. They might also add that a man who allocates most of his time pondering on racial issues moves away from the creator but I beg to differ. The two major religions today is christianity and islam - two foreign ideologies foistered upon Africa by the Caucasian and Arabic races. With it came a need for the assimilated to forego their own traditions to take up the languages and mannerisms of the foreign conquerors and any wonder why Africa finds it difficult to develop. The way I see it this and it is that in the west and middle east, race and religion are intertwined especially in Islam.

I recall the many instances when Nigeria has experienced religious riots for the most stupid of reasons i.e. the Danish cartoon depicting Mohammed in an unflattering manner, which resulted in the deaths of many in Nigeria. However, Nigerians continue to be humiliated abroad and at home by foreign forces with little or no reaction from any quarter. This demonstrates how stunted we are if we are prepared to die for a religion but ready to accept insults to our race.

I believe that loving oneself is akin to loving God and one cannot know the true God if one does not know himself. Therefore race is paramount and religion should follow.
Properties / Re: How To Be A Home Owner In United Kingdom by naylow: 4:15pm On Jan 24, 2007
Hi guys

A friend in Nigeria who is thinking of relocating to the UK wanted to apply for a mortgage from Nigeria to which I told him it was a no-show. He then said some naija friends of his have found a way around the system whereby Nigerians at home could actually purchase properties through via mago-mago channels. I told him not to try it else he'll lose his money.

Back to the original question - the best alternative especially if you're worried about the deposit is to go for a new build. A lot of Nigerians (and myself) are looking towards the outer rings of London i.e. Kent as a suitable area to live and bring up one's family. The advantages of a buying a newly built property are many, however, space more often than not is sacrificed for maximum profit which is not the case when buying a old home. Developers would often pay the 5% deposit but watch out for hidden charges as well as upgrades for the property which can set you back more than you anticipated.

TV/Movies / Re: Portrayal Of Kissing And Lovemaking In Nollywood Movies by naylow: 5:23pm On Sep 05, 2006
Why should naija films have kissing and lovemaking in them anyway? what impact does this have on the story-line anyway - most imporatntly why do we have to copy the oyinbo to feel like we've achieved something anyway.

This kind of thing should be restricted self.
