Fellow nairalanders,on my way to work this morning around 5:40am i was robbed today along Douglas road off Mbaise road just after Ama-Hausa in owerri.Imo state. This road has been notorious for armed young men roaming the streets early in the morning and even in day time looking for easy prey..please and please can the Imo state police command plan a sting operation and get these boys. The number of people going about their lawful duties being shot and robbed along that way in worrysome. And Owerri people should rise up as Men and be thier Brother's keeper, the way people pass by when they see one being robbed is very shocking. Just the last week Saturday a youngman was shot dead and they feel they should be out for revenge. I lost two phones and N6,700 in my wallet..It is i today it may be you innocent not wanting to assist parser-by. Our lives must not be ruined by the Dog-eat-Dog mode the underworld men are forcing us to. I beg Police take note.

Politics / Parable Of The Lion. By Tolu Ogulesi by neo25(m): 11:12am On Dec 06, 2015
Once upon a time, in a wildlife park in the mountain-belt of WondaWondaLand, lived a Lion. A big, old, statesmanly Lion. One day, bored stiff of living in captivity, it decided to step out and see the outside world. It was the biggest mistake of its life. And the final one. The Ogas-At-The-Top whose job it was to ensure that the Lion spent its allotted days in its allotted space, put out a “Wanted: Dead or Alive” notice upon the Lion’s head. It didn’t take too long. The Lion, unfamiliar with freedom, was swiftly cornered. The Lion temporarily forgot that this was WondaWondaLand, where escapee lions are rounded up, not with tranquilizer guns but with rusting Kalashnikovs. The bullets dropped like oversized full-stops on the opened page of the Lion’s life. The end. The rumour mills of WondaWondaLand – the only factories in the land that do not require electricity to function at full capacity – creaked into life. Someone suggested that there was indeed a tranquilizer gun, but it was locked up in the “not-on-seat” Park Director’s Office. Some people swore that no sooner had the Lion fallen than wild-eyed locals descended upon the carcass, determined to turn a fearsome beast into an awesome feast. Some people had photos to back up this theory, but at the time of going to press no one had confirmed that the photo was not swiped off Google Images’ cache of “20 Weirdest Photos You’ve Never Seen!” Still, other people insisted the Lion had been in captivity since the 1970s, even though experience teaches that Lions like him do not live past fifteen. It’s sad enough that we might never know the real truth about the Lion. But there’s even sadder stuff. Not once, in all of the news that travelled the land, was the Lion credited with an actual, proper name. Everyone referred to him as “the lion” or “the Jos lion”. Or – shudder! – “the escaped lion”. Sigh. Even in Zimbabwe, the lions have got names. There are those who say it was the Lion’s fault. Why did he succumb to the temptation of leaving the park? Why did it leave the absolute safety of captivity for the absolute lawlessness of freedom? Perhaps they are right. But let’s remember what happened to the WondaWondaLand Lion who stayed put. It happened in the Wild Wild Western city of Ibadan, many years ago. That Lion stayed put. Behaved sensibly and responsibly. Waited for its food to come to it, day in day out, entertained the guests who strolled past. And then the Prophet decided to show up. The Prophet was not exactly the most normal of persons. His was one book short of a complete Bible; one vision short of a comprehensible Revelation. The Prophet entered the Lion’s den, perhaps fancying himself a modern-day Daniel. Perhaps he heard voices. Whatever it was, he climbed the wire-fence and dropped into the den. The perplexed Lion rubbed his eyes to be sure it wasn’t the contact lens messing with him. Long story short, in the scene that followed, Preacher Man lay dead in the dust. He was no Daniel, it turned out. But at least the Lion had helped hasten his reuniting with the original Dan. It would turn out to be the Lion’s final act. For taking the life of a man who offered it to him, his own was demanded, and taken, even though he had not offered it. The Lion died. There was a third Lion. Maybe not. We really don’t know. One May Day in 2014, the rumour mills again threw up something about an escaped Lion. This time in the south-eastern WondaWondaLand city of Owerri. Not any ordinary Lion, but a “hungry” one. The town went berserk: offices and shops closed hurriedly, parents fell over one another to whisk their kids out of school. The police swung into action. When they emerged, they had in their dreaded custody someone they called an “alarmist” – the man alleged to have started the rumour. We don’t know if there was really a Lion, or if it had indeed contemplated fleeing the Zoo (the story doesn’t say). What we do know is that an entire town came to believe that a Hungry Lion had ruined their entire day. You can bet that only a handful of people ever heard the rest of the story – that this was a case of an innocent Lion falsely accused. Moral of the story: a tragic fate awaits WondaWondaLand’s lions, in or out of captivity. Stay put and you’re damned, get out and you’re still damned. And that’s only half the story. Somewhere in WondaWondaLand it occurred to someone with a philosophical bent that those lions were the perfect metaphor for the lives of WondaWondaLandas. You see, life, for these harassed masses, is no different than for the hapless manes. Stay put and you’re damned, escape abroad (to Poundland or Trumpland or the Zumalopolis, or anywhere else), and you’re still damned, a second-class exile in the first world, homesick for a country that can’t tell the difference between AK-47s and tranquilizer guns.
Crime / U.S Mass Killer Couple Were Calm And Devoted, never Raising Suspicions. by neo25(m): 1:00pm On Dec 04, 2015
RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Two years before they would kill 14 people in a storm of bullets and spark an investigation into whether international terrorism had sneaked into a small corner of America, Syed Rizwan Farook, a local man, and Tashfeen Malik, the bride he’d just brought back from Saudi Arabia, gathered with 200 people at a mosque here on a Friday night to celebrate their marriage. The couple that night marked the start of their life together in the U.S. with a meal of rice and spicy chicken, said Mustafa Kuko, the director of the Islamic Center of Riverside, where Mr. Farook worshiped for a few years. “By nature he’s a quiet person,” said Mr. Kuko, who attended the reception, “but on that night he was very happy.” On Wednesday, Mr. Farook, a county health inspector, and his wife were killed by police in a gunfight, hours after they stormed a holiday party for county workers with homemade bombs and assault rifles, an attack that also wounded 21 others. The couple had dropped off their 6- month-old daughter with Mr. Farook’s mother. Law-enforcement officials said Thursday they were exploring possible links to terrorism , though they weren’t sure what motivated the killings. President Barack Obama said earlier Thursday, “We don’t know why they did it,” but that terrorism couldn’t be ruled out. Investigators found Mr. Farook had contact, some online and some by phone, with people who came up tangentially in past federal terrorism probes. But authorities cautioned the contacts might not be significant and that workplace grievances might have played a role. The couple hadn’t surfaced previously in counterterrorism probes, law- enforcement officials said. Investigators recovered cellphones, which the couple had apparently smashed before launching their attack, according to people familiar with the case. Authorities hope to recover information from the phones, these people said. At the scene of the massacre, investigators found three pipe bombs that were set to be detonated by a contraption linked to a remote-controlled car. Police later found the couple kept large stocks of ammunition. “They had over 1,400 .223-caliber rounds and 200 9mm rounds available to them,” San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. In a home connected to the couple in nearby Redlands, Calif., authorities found thousands of additional rounds, Mr. Burguan said, as well as “12 pipe bomb type devices” and other material to produce explosives. “I am shocked that something like this could happen,” Mr. Farook’s brother-in- law, Farhan Khan, said at a news conference late Wednesday. David Bowdich, assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Los Angeles office, said Thursday that officials were exploring the possibility the couple had more targets in mind. “There was obviously a mission here,” he said. “We do not know why.” Federal officials said they believed the couple had returned to the U.S. in 2014, but several associates of Mr. Farook said it was a year earlier. Mr. Kuko said Mr. Farook made two trips to Saudi Arabia. Mr. Farook had traveled on a religious pilgrimage, known as the Hajj, recalled those who knew him. On the trip, Mr. Farook married Ms. Malik, a Pakistani woman who had been living in Saudi Arabia with her family, he told relatives and friends. People who knew Mr. Farook, 28 years old, and his wife, 27, described them as quiet, religious people who didn’t attract attention or suspicion. Mr. Farook never expressed political outrage to him, Mr. Kuko said, or complained about his county job as an environmental health inspector. “He seemed like a normal guy,” he said. At work, Mr. Farook was “a quiet person. He doesn’t laugh, he just smiles,” said Chris Nwadike, a fellow health inspector for San Bernardino County. Mr. Nwadike never saw him disagree with colleagues at work, he said. He seemed happier as he prepared to marry, saying he had “found someone on the Internet,” Mr. Nwadike recalled. When Mr. Farook returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia, he began to grow a beard, Mr. Nwadike said. Few people in the U.S. seemed to know Mr. Farook’s wife very well. On the night of their wedding reception in Southern California, some guests recalled, Ms. Malik celebrated separately with the women. Unlike her husband, she didn’t regularly attend the mosque. Mr. Farook attended the Riverside mosque starting around 2012, the mosque leader, Mr. Koku said. People there knew him by his middle name, Rizwan. He came to prayers twice a day, often alone, and left without lingering to speak for more than a few minutes, Mr. Koku said. Mr. Farook was born in Illinois, but by the 1990s, he, his parents, brother and two sisters moved to Southern California and settled in a peach-beige stucco house in an ethnically diverse working-class neighborhood of Riverside, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. There, Mr. Farook’s father, also named Syed, was known to neighbors as “Sy” or Farook. He often dressed in traditional white garb, matching shirt and long, loose trousers of his native Pakistan, neighbors said. He worked as a truck driver, using his own blue big rig to haul loads. The Farooks kept chickens, a rooster and goats in their backyard, according to several neighbors. They fattened, slaughtered and roasted the goats, said Margaret Colvin, whose yard backed onto the Farooks former family home. She said only two things had bothered her about the family: a rooster that crowed often and fireworks they set off one July Fourth. Inside the Farook home, the family was in turmoil. Mr. Farook’s mother accused her husband of physical abuse and heavy drinking in a divorce proceeding, according to court records. At one point, the father threatened to kill himself and was placed in a county hospital for 72 hours, the records show. His mother won a protection order and eventually the couple split. Neither could be reached for comment. The neighbors remember both Farook sons as polite. They said the boys dressed like other teenagers, in jeans and T-shirts. As they got older, they began to wear traditional Muslim attire on occasion. When Mr. Farook was 22 years old, his family set up a profile for him at an online site billed as “a one stop source for Indian Matrimonial and Dating services.” His profile said he was from a “religios [sic] but modern family” who “enjoy(s) working on vintage and modern cars” and reading religious books. The profile also said he liked to “just hang out in backyard doing target practice with younger sister and friends.” Family members had helped connect the couple, a common practice of the Pakistani Muslim community, said Hussam Ayloush, director of the Los Angeles Council on American-Islamic Relations. Once introduced, a couple typically get acquainted online and over the phone. Mr. Farook’s mother, Rafia, sold the family’s home in May according to property records. On Thursday, a package for her still sat on the porch. Like many mosques in the post-911 era, the Islamic Center of Riverside, where Mr. Farook attended, had established regular contact with law enforcement. Mr. Farook told Mr. Kuko about “his hobby in mechanics. He said he liked working on cars. He said he is a good mechanic.” Mr. Farook had asked Mr. Kuko to refer any members of the congregation who needed an auto mechanic, Mr. Kuko said. After moving to Redlands with his wife, Mr. Farook went to the Islamic Community of Redlands, a family friend said. Board director Khalid Zeidan said Mr. Farook wasn’t on the member list but “must have attended prayers a few times.” Mr. Zeidan said if Mr. Farook was radicalized, it must have been elsewhere. Of his mosque members, Mr. Zeidan said, “I have never seen anyone who talked or who has any radical opinion.” Members of the mosque planned to meet to discuss the tragedy, he said. Family and acquaintances said the couple earlier this year were happily making preparations to welcome their first baby, a girl, who was born in May. An online registry shows Ms. Malik registered at Target for a car seat and diapers. On Thursday, the baby is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Politics / "Ethnic Cleansing" At Nigeria Customs? - By Mefor by neo25(m): 7:27pm On Nov 28, 2015
RETIRED Col Hamid Ibrahim Ali, who took over as Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in a very controversial circumstance, is progressing in error. The anomalies his policies are perpetrating in the Nigeria Customs are unhealthy. Col Ali was once a military administrator of Kaduna State (August 1996 to August 1998). Since his retirement, he has been politically active and fought to return Muhammadu Buhari as President. He was in charge of the President’s recent presidential campaign funds and later became his Chief of Staff before his appointment as head of the Nigeria Customs. No doubt, he is the President’s confidant.

The criminologist and poultry farmer was also the Secretary of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) in which capacity he represented the Arewa Consultative Forum at the Oputa Panel and was its presenter-in-chief when the Ohanaeze Ndigbo made its case against the Nigerian Civil War. Col. Ali’s appointment as Comptroller-General of Customs was greeted with controversy. It was about the first time a non-career officer is heading the Customs Service. Of greater concern is his approach to issues, which led to the mass resignation of all the Deputy Comptrollers General (DCGs) in one day. This, too, was as unprecedented as it was controversial.

The appointments and promotions he made following the said mass resignation are controversial, prompting many to ask if his mission to the Customs Service is to see the South East officers out of the Service; as the slots traditionally reserved for the South East zone were shared out to other zones – a critical social injustice. There is an exclusion and marginalisation of the South East in the 2015 Nigeria Customs Service appointments/promotions for the management cadre. Unlike what obtained in the past, each zone gets, on the average, four slots for Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) cadre and one DCG. In the present promotions/appointments, while the other five zones in the country retained their number of slots or got more, South East got nothing save one DCG, whereas the zone got four ACGs in the 2014 appointments/promotions and something similar in the previous ones. The distribution of the 2014 appointments/promotions reflected the tradition and adherence to Federal Character at Customs but now thrown overboard.

The distribution in the Comptrollers’ cadre is pathetic, as the South East was nearly completely left out also. North West alone got 25 slots as against four by the South East. Other zones also got relatively the lion’s share compared to the South East. Question is: on what basis were these promotions done and what is the justification for the bizarre disparity between the other zones and South East, to the point where a zone would get 25 Comptrollers and South East only four? For the avoidance of doubt, here it is: SE 4, SS 11, SW 10, NC 18, NE 26 and NW 25.

Nigeria Customs Service is vital to revenue generation in Nigeria. And in this era where the revenue of the country is fast dwindling, it is only necessary that the service be allowed to enjoy the requisite peace and cooperation. A situation where one zone is feeling that they are being deliberately excluded from the management cadre can only breed angst and frustration.

Injustice to one is an injustice to all. Social justice has to be given its due premium in Nigeria if the country will gain the needed unity and make progress at development. Social psychological researches on work and wellbeing of workers have clearly shown that the surest way to destroying any organisation is to have different sets of rules/rewards for the different workers in the same organisation. The arbitrariness obtainable in the military era hardly suffices in a democratic dispensation. If the strange policy of exclusion introduced in the Customs is allowed to stand, Customs officers of South East extraction are being told in no uncertain terms that they cannot aspire to certain ranks or become the Comptroller General of that Service. This is wrong.

The President needs to get the Customs boss to respect and restore the rights of the excluded South East zone and work for greater harmony with the officers and men of the Service, whose confidence he needs in order to succeed. President Muhammadu Buhari has himself demonstrated great commitment to rule of law and constitutionalism, and against his wishes and beliefs, extended cabinet ranks to all the 37 ministers. Buhari, too, is a retired military officer and could have insisted on having ministers without portfolios and reap the acrimony it would generate. Col. Ali needs to emulate President Buhari. In the realm of psychology, perception is everything. The nation has to manage the growing feeling of alienation both in the North and South Nigeria. Deliberate efforts must be made to address the sources of such alienations and not stoking them, as is now happening in the Customs. And only inclusive policies can promote amity and progress of Nigeria, not exclusionism.

Religion / What Do We Do:the Church Close By Is Killing Us With Loud Speakers. by neo25(m): 8:26am On Sep 27, 2015
I write to ask a question on a topic most nigerians experience most days in our peaceful life despite the economic hardship.
In a residential area with some few vacant plots close to ours a pentecostal church has mushromed out to hunt the peace and serenity of the homes around. Armed with loud speakers pointing different directions with few persons for congregation, three days a week is ear-drum piecing shouts with voice and instruments, one can't even talk or take a phone call in the house without shouting, even worse is the monthly night-vigil,when that happens no sleep for the entire area as they enjoy thier night gyrating till 6:00am. Hence my question;I am a christian what i actually want is a reduction in the noise and i want to do it Legally. The Members of the church i meet says the land is theirs and are obliged to do with it as they deem fit and on that days prayer session i hard them casting and binding persons against their congregating. Though, the home owners here are divided on the church noise level i feel its out of reverence for God not to interfere even if it kills them. I am doing this on my own. Pls.advice me on how i can legally bring this sound level down and keep it that way.
