The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has decried the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), boasting that such can not happen under his watch.

Speaking at the commemoration of this year’s International youth Day in Abuja on Friday, Atiku said his father did not want him to go to school, but he was able to embrace education up till university level.

Atiku said the most important and fundamental rights of any youth is education, saying “I take very strong exception to the strike by ASUU and the inability of the government to resolve that crisis. It will never happen under a PDP government or under my administration when I am elected.”

Atiku, who said he was an investor in the education sector, added that it is the responsibility of any responsible government to make sure that right is given to every Nigerian every youth in this country.

Senator Dino Melaye has slammed Festus Keyamo over his comment that Atiku Abubakar is no match for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Bola Tinubu. 

Keyamo, the Labour and Employment minister and spokesperson of the Tinubu campaign organisation had recently claimed Atiku does not have the experience to lead Nigeria and that the Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is even way ahead of him in the race for the country’s number one seat.

But speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Senator Melaye, who is the spokesperson of the Atiku campaign council, berated the APC, saying the party will find it hard selling its presidential candidate Tinubu.

“This government marketed Atiku by their colossal failure. Today, the most difficult candidate to sell is an APC candidate whether, at the House of Representatives, Senate, or governorship level,” the lawmaker said during the show.

“That is why you cannot defend, promote or campaign for Bola Ahmed Tinubu without looking stupid. This is what happened to my brother and friend, Festus Keyamo, he started talking off point. He started saying things that do not make sense.”

Senator Melaye believes his principal is the best for the presidential seat next year, dismissing what he called the “social media euphoria” of Peter Obi.

According to him, social media is quite different from reality, arguing that the Labour Party did poorly in the Osun State governorship election.

“What you have is euphoria; a created euphoria,” he said during the show. “Let me even tell you, Peter Obi is a fantastic Nigerian. I have tremendous respect for him and I have said it before but this is not his time. He does not have what it takes now to unify the country.”

“Today, among all presidential candidates, Atiku is the only one that can be trusted; nobody will see him as a religious bigot, tribalist; or ethnic jingoist,” Melaye added.

The 15 political parties deregistered by the Independent National Electoral Commission, under the aegis of Coalition for Good Governance, on Friday declared support for the presidential ambition of the candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi. The organisation said only Obi out of the candidates contesting for the 2023 Presidency can stop Nigeria from disintegrating.

The CGG in a statement by its national chairman, Okey Chikwendu, and Publicity Secretary, Don Anthony Harmattan, said the deregistered parties took the decision after carefully studying each presidential candidates to know the most reliable and credible among them. INEC had in 2020 deregistered 74 political parties on the ground that they failed to meet constitutional requirements that determine the continuous existence of political parties in the country, leaving 18 which passed its test.

But the deregistered parties said they still have their structures in place, adding that they would all support and work for the success of the former governor of Anambra State. The statement read,”We have earlier stated that the outcome of the political parties primaries for the presidential ticket and selection of the vice presidential tickets will determine which party we, the Coalition for Good Governance comprising of 15 deregistered political parties and some former presidential candidates would endorse and support for the 2023 presidential election.

“The choice is based on identifying the ticket with the most credible candidates who are tested, trusted, and exhibit sufficient intellectual capacity to salvage our nation from the wreck we find ourselves and meet the yearnings of the Nigerian people which is equitable, fair and just irrespective of tribe or ethnicity.

“In furtherance to the above, the CGG on July 28 held a meeting in Abuja well attended by the National Party Chairmen and former presidential candidates of deregistered political parties whereby they took a very critical appraisal of all the current presidential contenders for the 2023 presidential elections and their Vice, the house unanimously voted Peter Obi/Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed...
