Ekiti is 2nd poorest state in Nigeria – Commissioner

Thursday, July 28, 2011
All the roads leading to Ekiti State are not good enough and the state government cannot afford to embark on dualisation of any of them now. Why should a state that prides itself as the Fountain of Knowledge in Nigeria be one of the poorest? This is one of the questions Governor Kayode Fayemi –led Administration is trying to find answer to in order to transform Ekiti State. In an interview with Charles Segun Adegbite the State Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Fola Richie-Adewusi speaks on the government’s agenda, its challenges, and what the governor intends to achieve before celebrating its first year in office.

Revenue Allocation is not the benchmark for calculating the poverty level of states. What revenue allocation can not do, internally generated revenue can do.

Wont GPD and HDI be a better way of determining if a state is poor? What does total allocation have to do with Being poor? Even Allocation per capital would have been a better statistical way of measuring if in which Ekiti comes in 12th.

But you have to realize that more than half of the state in nigeria are failures, With out government allocations they will fail. Thats because Nigeria has to many POINTLESS STATES and these idiots want to create more banana republic states in which they will need government allocation to survive. In reality a small country(size) like nigeria should only have 12-15 states that could generate revenue by themselves.

Ekiti is one of these pointless states, thats why the commissioner said its poor, Because its main source of revenue is from allocations.

you are right. Many states were created because locals wanted bragging rights.Viability was not a factor. Some are still agitating for the creation of more states, hoping their current city would become the capital. And of course, more senatorial zones and federal constituencies would emerge, meaning more job for the "boys".
I did not create this thread to disparage Ekiti state, although the report appears sensational.

Ekiti is a bad and underdeveloped like every other Yoruba state. Yorobah states remains the poorest Nigeria has seen in the 21st century. The last I passed thru, is it akure to ondo town to ibadan on a federal government assignment, because nothing could have taken me to such places, I saw the dehumanizing level of poverty in the southwest. It was worth crying for. I saw their caves and mud houses in the state capitals. I saw the level of mal-nutrition and healthcare, its pathetic. I wept for the yorobahs. I was asking where are the obansanjors, the adenugas, the otedolas. Na waoo yorobahs can be so wicked even onto themselves.

At the topic: Ekiti to the best of knowledge is not supposed to be a state. It should have been designated as a local council.

Internally Generated Revenue from where? Ok, I served in Ekiti. They have only a street-market at Ado-Ekiti. Where else would the main IGR come from?

Banks and their high institutions are the only "Oil Company" one can dream of working at in Ekiti State.

I think by "2nd poorest", they mean 2nd smallest federal allocations. Not poverty rates, gdp/capita, etc, etc
