Music/Radio / Top 5 Nigerian Rappers Who Are Deep Writers by Nigerianwriters: 3:15pm On Sep 25, 2017
Rap as we know has been a long age art that has been closely aligned with poetry. In Nigeria, there are guys who have mastered this art and they take you on a journey when you listen to them spit bars. With the right amount of similes, metaphors and good wordplay, they undoubtedly make you understand that aside spitting bars, they’re indeed deep writers. Without much ado, here’s my Top 5 Nigerian Rappers Who Are Deep Writers.

But holdup, before we proceed, I will like to briefly explain what I mean by ‘Deep Writers’
These are guys that make you think after listening to a particular track or an album. Guys that destroy wordplay, similes, storytelling, rhymes, metaphors and what have you. And just to add, they do it on any kind of beat.
So here we go:

No. 5. Six Foot Plus:

He is indeed six foot tall and lyrical. He largely delivers his lines in Pidgin English. The first to make me fall in love with storytelling when it comes to rap. He perfectly blends Hausa, his native language and Pidgin English so well.
In his hit track ’E Don do Me’ he said

Na me dey eat the smallest ration, dey wash the most plate
Him children, nothing dem dey do, people for God sake.
Na me dey wake up first, na me dey sleep last,
Na me dem dey beat, because I no dey fit pass
But how I go pass when I no fit rest,
From sunrise to sunset, my life na so so stress

No. 4. Eva Alordiah:

Eva is undoubtedly one of the greatest rappers to come out of Nigeria. She’s too artistic to be caged in box because she does it all. Her lyrics, delivery and composure are altogether superlative. Of all her songs and albums, ‘Get High’ and ‘War Coming’ does it for me.

Literature / The Ugly Truth About Writing In Nigeria by Nigerianwriters: 8:16pm On Sep 18, 2017
Nigeria is a country with a broad platform of diverse opportunities. Whether small or top-notch, careers are available and are created regularly. One of such careers, which exist on a controversial level, is writing. Among many, the “writing” career has been approached from different standpoints and opinions.

Living in Nigeria, achievement career wise is tied to particular job lines and positions, those with an aura of strength and whose job titles already give out what the person would do and where he will work. For instance, the title “Doctor” effortlessly gives the clue that one either works in a hospital or is in the academic field, and so does a “Banker”, “Engineer” and “Teacher”. Apparently, introducing oneself with the title “writer” always puts a quizzical expression on the face of anyone you engage in a conversation with.

What is writing really about and why should it be given so much importance? What significance does it hold? These and many more questions are immediately triggered in the respondent.

In a bid to focus attention, an attempt can be made in defining the term “writing” even though the depth and real truth of it cannot be captured in words. Writing generally involves the ability to use words tactically to produce an idea, not just mere spelling out words to form sentences.

Sadly, in Nigeria, writing is seen as a mere language skill that every literate person should possess. Saying you have a passion towards writing is like choosing to be dormant.

Because of the presence of tact and the aim of producing an idea from words, one that engages the minds of people and triggers the imagination and one that promotes a cause, not everyone can be seen or described as a writer even though anyone can attempt it.

IT’S BORING
Writing in Nigeria is generally classified under a boring venture. People see it as a “thing” for those who don’t have much fun or vibe to engage in. It is considered a passive activity,... Read More http://www.nigerianwritersforum.com/2017/09/18/writing-in-nigeria/

Celebrities / Quit Whinning! - Film Director Solomon Essang Blasts Nigerian Writers by Nigerianwriters: 1:24pm On Aug 30, 2017
I recently had a sit down with one of Nigeria’s finest Film Directors, Mr. Solomon Essang, a seasoned film maker. He shared his ideas on filmmaking, scriptwriting and the future of Nollywood. He said filmmaking is the business of selling emotions. Enjoy.

NWF: How has the journey been from winning First Stars reality show to now?

Lol… I wish I could call it a “journey” but anyways it was quite uneventful, I don’t know how other competition goes but it wasn’t quite what I expected, needless to say nothing happened after winning but it was nice to get the prize money, Kudos to Firstbank and the guys at EbonyLife TV

NWF: How did you get into filmmaking? At what point did you decide you’d do this?

Filmmaking has always fascinated me from the first time I could make out what was happening on TV, I wish I was exposed to cinema but that wasn’t the case, it was when I stumbled on the “behind the scenes” of John Landis work on Michael Jackson’s THRILLER, that I got hooked on filmmaking since then I kept a keen eye to “reverse engineer” everything I watch. When it was time for university I realized there was nothing “film” for me so I took the next closest thing to it and as I could not afford film school I knew I had to teach myself, I am a “self-taught” filmmaker by the way.

NWF: What does screenwriting mean to you?

For many years I lived with an Architect, I realized that it’s one thing to design a house on paper that is beautiful but architects also would go a long way to design a house that is “functional” and structurally stable, if the design does not meet these criteria’s it poses an aesthetic problem or worse, the house will collapse, A script is the life force of any good film, the life force and blueprint with which everybody on a film project navigates their craft as a result, it’s something I don’t f**k around with. Like I would always say, you can shoot crap but... Read More: http://www.nigerianwritersforum.com/2017/08/29/selling-emotions-directorsolomon-inteview/

Romance / When Your Parents Fight, Stay In Your Lane (eye Opener!) by Nigerianwriters: 2:04pm On Aug 08, 2017
My people, come close, let me tell you something. You see your parents? The ones whom you grew up with and perhaps, still live with? You see them? When they quarrel, stay in your lane. Especially if they’ve been married for over two decades. Stay. In. Your. Lane!

If you don’t, they will mess you up, in a very big way. This is how they roll; you’re on your own, jejeli facing your front, then from the bedroom, you hear your parents arguing heatedly, your father then opens the bedroom door and slams it shut. You hear the jangling of keys, and then a car engine revs. The eagle has left the building.

You’re still facing your front, when your mother opens your bedroom door. She has come to make a report. “You see wetin your Papa do? I no like am. I say, I no like am at all. Why will He do that to me? After all these years? I will not take it!”
You know you should seal your lips. However, you instantly become possessed by the spirit of Blessed-are-the-Peacemakers and his brother, Single-handed Family Settler of Disputes. “Mummy, don’t mind him,” you say, jumping to her defence. “That’s how he behaves all the time, as if he doesn’t have sense.”

Silence…

Then…

“Ehn? Who did you just call stupid?” You’re like, “Huh?” “Don’t huh me anything! How dare you say my husband does not have sense?” “Jeezez!” you mutter to yourself. “Zero to hundred jos laidat?!” But you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. She’s just warming up. “Mummy, I didn’t say he doesn’t have sense. I said he does like he doesn’t ha….” “Will you shut up that your dirty mouth! You still have th... Politics / The Chronicles Of A Nation by Nigerianwriters: 12:08pm On Aug 08, 2017
This is the chronicles of a nation, a scribble of a land with about 250 ethnic groups with each inhabits a territory that it considers to be its own by right of first occupancy and inheritance. Individuals who aren’t members of a dominant group but who have lived and worked for several decades in the territory of the group are still considered to be aliens.

I’m a lost little girl of uncertain age without a precise name in an alienated land since the time my parents were exiled untimely from their land into an unknown expedition due to invasion from aliens, I became a homeless wanderer, a beggar and a repulsive orphan, Dearth was the best friend I have always known all my life, then while wandering about as usual I ran into some aliens raiding a land, and that was how I was abducted by these strange foreigners from a distant lands across seas & oceans who looked like gods, they reared their ugly faces into lands that was vulnerable to external control of colonialism from aliens like themselves.
I was taken away by these foreigners together with other children, men and women to a desecrated land where slavery, hate, frustration, fighting, punishments, deprivation, envy, humiliation, stealing, violence, rape, sexual molestation & assault, starvation, depression, suicide, jealousy, strife, killings, coerce labor and all that is synonymous to evil machinations was always the table of content to how each day is governed unjustly. Every slaves initial names were extinct on that land, and slave-masters made it a duty to Christine each slave they acquire to themselves with a name they choose and that ideally becomes the slaves... Celebrities / 10 Habits That Make You A More Effective Writer by Nigerianwriters: 11:46am On Aug 08, 2017
The dream of every writer is to be more productive. The good news is that it can be done, but the other – I refuse to say bad – news is that it won’t happen overnight. Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do; success is not an action, but a habit” and I totally agree. To increase your productivity, here are 10 habits that make you a more effective writer.

GET YOUR OWN SPACE
This is my personal most important step. Writing is a very mental and even emotional process and you need your own mental space for the process that births the pieces. Your mental space is the place or situation that lets your creative juices flow and in most cases it means your own house or your own room. If you want to become a more effective writer, you really should make this your topmost priority because having your space gives you structure and structure increases your productivity.

READ LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT AND READ LIKE A WRITER
I can’t scream this enough “You write what you read”. Some writers say that they don’t like to read and I ask; “How will you write a book if you don’t know what a book looks like?” Read everything you can, it really doesn’t matter if you want to; nobody asked you if you wanted to read your textbooks at school, but you did it. And don’t just read, pay attention to the structure, what made a book a bestseller or not; what made that movie script win so and so awards. I’d like to add that you should also watch TV and movies as much as you can, especially for...read more here http://www.nigerianwritersforum.com/2017/08/04/more-effective-writer/
