Education / Re: My Accent Is Affecting Me Acedemically, pls Help!!! by oladapolif: 7:51pm On Sep 26, 2015
same problem too, but u need to read novels.. the more read, the more u become secure with your English... you will speak without been shy in public... Trust me, its works for me..

bossto:
I have an accent that has been discouraging me to the extent that i'm too shy to speak in the public.

For instance,"light and night" sound alike to me, I mean i can't differentiate them perfectly, but whenever I converse with my friends or put those aforementioned words in sentences, they (my friends) do not correct me...But I always doubt if I had pronounced them correctly.

Other words I have problem in differentiating are: snap/slap, lame/name. Though no one has corrected me on these.

So the main issue here is "IS THERE MUCH DIFFERENCE IN THEIR SOUNDS?
Pls be honest!!

BTW, Aliyu can also work for Innoson Motors (an Igbo company grin grin grin)

With all due respect sir, you are very wrong on what caused the Nigerian civil war.

Agreed, some Igbo military guys made some mistakes that triggered the counter-coup of January 1966 which led to the brutal murder of then Head of State- Aguiyi Ironsi.

What was the mistake some Igbo military officer(s) made?

Maj. Ifeajuna leaking the 1966 coup info to his cousin- President Nnamdi Azikiwe which made Zik to flee and avoid the military coup that led to the death of Tafawa Belewa, Akintola Williams and co...at least if Ifeajuna hadn't leaked the info to Azikiwe, Azikiwe would have been killed, and the Hausas wouldn't have seen that first military coup of 1966 as an Igbo-military coup to oust northern political leaders at the national level.

So I blame Ifeajuna.

Another Igbo military officer that made a big mistake was Maj. Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi by not listening to Ojukwu and went ahead with his national peace tour to re-unite Nigeria that was already on fire after the first bloody coup. If Aguiyi Ironsi had listened to Ojukwu and called that national tour off and focused on securing his Head of State seat first before embarking on unnecessary national reconciliation tours.

The imminent cause of the war was the 1966 pogrom in Nigeria. You can google it.

What was the pogrom all about? It was a mass killing of ordinary Igbo civilians, traders, businessmen/women and children living in the northern states for no justifiable reason...the north as we all can see till date have always enjoyed spilling of innocent peoples blood for no reason....courtesy of Almajiri system and their Jihad mentality and mass mobilization for everything.

Now, after the counter coup which led to the death of Aguiyi Ironsi, there was a pogrom (mass killing of Igbos living in the northern states)....and Gowon who took over power after Ironsi was murdered refused to call northerners to order in order to stop the mass killing of igbo civilians in the north.

Everyday, trucks brought back loads of igbo youths, men, women and children killed in the north by northerners...tears and cries became the order of the day in the south-eastern part of Nigeria between January 1966 - May 1966.

Colonel Ojukwu was the governor of Eastern region of Nigeria, and just like the Igbo leader...he called Gowon to call northerners to order and stop the brutal killings of igbos in the north and in military barracks, but Gowon couldn't do anything.

There was so much pressure on Ojukwu from the Igbos...Ojukwu summoned an emergency meeting of all Igbos at UNN Nsukka to seek for their opinion on the way forward...and they unanonymously agreed to secede from Nigeria and be on their own since the people they saw as their countrymen don't want them and kept killing them for no justifiable reason.

That was how Ojukwu with the support and encouragement of other top Igbo/Niger Delta leaders declared their interest to secede from Nigeria and form their own region- Biafra!

Awolowo was in jail @Enugu...he agreed that if Igbos secede from Nigeria, that Yorubas will have no other option than to secede too....Ojukwu was happy that it was going to be a peaceful secession since Yorubas will be leaving as Igbos are leaving too.

Ojukwu then released Awolowo from jail and escorted him back to his home in southwest....Awolowo got home and changed words...because he got a political offer to become Nigeria's finance minister.

Gowon agreed that Biafra should go!

They went to Aburi Ghana...another topic all together...

Britain and America knowing that crude oil was recently discovered in Southeastern Nigeria, and knowing that Ojukwu was not ready to dance to their tone of allowing their BP, etc oil companies to operate, advised Gowon not to allow Biafra secede from Nigeria.

Britain and American then promised Nigeria military support to return Biafra back to Nigeria through military action.

That was when Gowon then declared war against Biafra to return them back to Nigeria, and the war begun.

Ojukwu never declared war against Nigeria...Ojukwu only did the will of the Biafran masses to defend their territory and become their own country, which Britain and America fought against using Gowon, (northerners/Middle Belt) and Yorubas to fulfil.

So stop saying the wrong thing just to make it seem fair to all that Ojukwu declared war.

Biafra had no formal military to declare war...all Biafran soldiers were volunteers who volunteered willingly to defend their falling fate.

So get it right: Nigeria declared war against Biafra for deciding to go in midst of mass killing and discrimination by their fellow countrymen.

If not for the 1966 pogrom that followed after the counter coup of 1966, there wouldn't have been the civil war.

Thanks for your post. According to your post, I realised you didnt do mathematics with your story, am going to ask you some question, according to your post. First, lets start from the pogrom, How many igbos were living in the northern part of Nigeria before civil war? I guess you dont know, as you claim igbos corps was fully loaded inside the truck everyday for 5months. Secondly, So Ojukwu plan of leaving Nigeria was a peaceful plan? Thirdly, You think all these foreign military countries were supporting Nigeria/Biafra, cos they care about us? if they have nothing to gain from us and if the Crude Oil was discovered in the North, will Ojukwu want Igbos to leave? Lastly, Do you think if Ojukwu had a better plan of leaving Nigeria, will he be successful without any Igbo man snitching on him?. Ok, Let me ask you the finally question, that you should think deeply. Why was the Nigeria central power was with the northerners even though, they didnt acquire much education like Yoruba and Igbos then? Answer: is because the British found them more civilized and more arranged.( They act like ant), They are one way people. Lets be honest with ourselves here, Igbos are not arranged, they dont have simple formation as the Hausa or the Yoruba, that why its hard for them to rule Nigeria. Hausa are few in the power, but they are more arranged than the Yorubas and Igbos. Conclustion to my post, Northerners have a foreshadow why Ojukwu want Igbos to leave, thats the crude oil. Every country that joined the civil war was because each party entices each nation of our natural resources and gain. Please dont be bias, but think neutrally and be open minded about the whole issue.

You did not read that Nigeria declared war on young unarmed Biafra? Biafra was for dialogue and Aburi Accord would have been the panacea for a peaceful break-up but for Awolowo's treachery. The war was unfortunate. Ojukwu is a Hero forever! You cannot buy heroism with money or propaganda. He is and will always be the man after the heart of the Igbos. And for your information, Biafra will be whether now or in the future. There will surely be Biafra!

One Nigeria is a mirage in the face of injustice, marginalization, quota system, born to rule mentality, inequality, gang up against a section of the country etc. One Nigeria an impossibility in the face of all these.

BIAFRA LIVES!!

Honestly, I dont like replying senseless reply, because you just replied me out of contest and didnt follow what i posted. Well, Ojukwu is a great man to those who really want to believe he is, to those who want to think outside the box, will see clearly. Back to my post, Causes of the war should be focused on, Nigeria Govt declared war on Biafran Youths for no reason? You should always make a complete sentence please. Thanks.. Next time, reply me with your common sense working.
Politics / Re: Throw Back Picture Of Odimegwu Ojukwu And Wife Stella by oladapolif: 1:27am On May 12, 2015
Its left for you to have a sensible mind about this man Ojukwu and what really triggered the Nigeria Civil War, that have wasted many igbos lives by putting them on a line. I am Yoruba and today, I decided to re-read about this Biafra war and why the Nigeria government did not want igbos to leave, because I am tired of Igbo cries and I want Nigeria to break up as well. I went on Wikipedia and to what I can gather about the causes of the war, was that Ojukwu doesnot like the Northerners in Power and he wants the igbos to be charge, due to the natural resource "Oil" is in the Eastern Region. The igbos were collecting Royalties from the Oil production even before the war. Most countries that supported Nigeria Govt. during war, was because of their Nations' interest. Uk was supporting Nigeria Govt cos of their Shell Company, USA was partially supporting Nigeria Govt cos of their Investments in Nigeria, Isreal was supporting Biafra cos of their nations Interest as well. Take a good look at these nations supporting each party, Do you think they give a fkkk about Africans, if they have nothing to gain from us?.( tell me about other Africa civil war and what Europe country give a fkkk, if they have nothing to offer to the Europeans?) Biafra claim they lost due to Starvation, will you feed your opponent when you are fighting, but Biafra refuse to acknowledge the fact that they went to war with less ammunition. Biafra have continue to blame Awolowo for their failure and forget the power of propaganda. We should be more focus on Ojukwu, who rushed the Biafra youths to war without better plan, We should also remember Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, who is power hungry as Ojukwu and he also betrayed his fellow Biafrians, We should talk about how Ojukwu released Banjo to fight his own people. To me, I believe Ojukwu should have been held accountable when he was alive for leading Biafria to war when they are not fully ready, I believe the causes of the war should be more focused on and if Biafra want to create their nation, they should do it in a diplomatic way. I am not been biased in anyway, just according to what I could gather online about the causes of the civil war.
