Cindypresh:A simple search on Google should tell you that Buhari took over power in December 1983, so he couldn't have caused the said "hardship" on the 30th of November 1983. As a matter of fact, the military used the said hardship as an excuse to overthrow the Shagari led civilian government. Gosh!,we need to reintroduce the study of history in our schools. |
Sports / Boxing Controversy - What We Know And What We Don't by Oladat(m): 7:19pm On Aug 02 |
Sean Kearns BBC Sport Published 3 hours ago Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting have been cleared to compete at the Paris Olympics despite being disqualified from last year's World Championships after they were said to have failed gender eligibility tests. Khelif, 25, is through to the quarter-finals of the women's 66kg category after beating Italy's Angela Carini, while Lin reached the last eight of the women's 57kg category with victory over Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova. Their participation in the Games has proved controversial given their disqualifications in 2023. Khelif's bout, which was abandoned after 46 seconds by Carini, has led to some criticising the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing the entry of a boxer who had previously been said to have failed to meet gender eligibility criteria. Italian Carini said she ended the fight to "preserve her life", but apologised to her Algerian opponent on Friday for not shaking hands. Khelif, speaking after her victory, said: "I'm here for the gold - I fight everybody." The International Boxing Association (IBA), which was the previous organiser of Olympic boxing, has been a vocal critic of the IOC's decision to permit the two athletes to compete. Here BBC Sport takes you through some of the key questions around the topic. What sex was Khelif assigned at birth? Was she born biologically male or female? Khelif has always competed in the women's division and is recognised by the International IOC as a female athlete. "The Algerian boxer was born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport," IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said on Friday. "This is not a transgender case. There has been some confusion that somehow it's a man fighting a woman. This is just not the case. On that there is consensus, scientifically this is not a man fighting a woman." Khelif has spoken about her experience of growing up as a girl in Algeria and the prejudice she faced playing football alongside boys. "Don't let obstacles come in your way, resist any obstacles and overcome them," she said in March 2024. "My dream is to win a gold medal. "If I win, mothers and fathers can see how far their children can go. I particularly want to inspire girls and children who are disadvantaged in Algeria." There is no suggestion Khelif identifies as anything other than a woman. Khelif being in women's boxing not fair, says next opponent What is her boxing career to date? Khelif has been boxing for eight years. The Algerian made her debut on the world amateur stage at 19, when she came 17th at the 2018 World Championships. A year later, Khelif came 19th in the 2019 Women's World Boxing Championships. She made her Olympic debut at the 2020 Games in Tokyo. Fighting in the 60kg lightweight division, Khelif was beaten 5-0 at the quarter-final stage by Ireland's eventual gold medallist Kellie Harrington. She then became the first Algerian boxer to win a World Championship medal, taking silver in 2022 after losing the final to Ireland's Amy Broadhurst, who now represents Britain. Khelif followed that by winning the 2022 African Championships and 2022 Mediterranean Games. In 2023, she won gold at the Arab Games in the 66kg division and earned her place in the 2024 Games by beating Mozambique's Alcinda Panguana in the final of the African Olympics qualification tournament in Senegal. To date, Khelif has fought 51 times in her career, winning 42 and losing nine. Six of those victories have come via knockout. Why was Khelif's win against Carini controversial? Khelif's victory attracted controversy, and criticism from some people, after Carini conceded in just 46 seconds. The Italian boxer, who said she had to "preserve her life" following the abandoned bout, has since apologised to her opponent. Much of the criticism stems from Khelif's disqualification at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi, India. She failed a gender eligibility test conducted by the IBA hours before her gold medal showdown against China's Yang Liu. The Algerian initially appealed against the decision with the Court of Arbitration of Sport, but withdrew her appeal during the process. The Russian-led IBA said Khelif "failed to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women's competition, as set and laid out in the IBA regulations". According to the IBA's regulations: "Boxers will compete against boxers of the same gender, meaning women vs women and men vs men as per the definitions of these rules. The IBA defines a woman, female or girl as "an individual with chromosome XX" and men, males or boys as "an individual with chromosome XY". The IBA denied Khelif's testosterone levels had been tested. In an interview with BBC sports editor Dan Roan on Thursday, IBA chief executive Chris Roberts said XY chromosomes were found in "both cases". Roberts said there were "different strands involved in that" and therefore the body could not commit to referring to Khelif as "biologically male". The IOC has raised doubts over the accuracy of the tests. "We don't know what the protocol was, we don't know whether the test was accurate, we don't know whether we should believe the test," said IOC spokesperson Adams. "There's a difference between a test taking place and whether we accept the accuracy or even the protocol of the test." The BBC has, as yet, been unable to determine what the eligibility tests consisted of. What has changed in Olympic boxing regulation and governance since the IBA's decision? Unlike previous Games, boxing at the Tokyo Olympics was organised by the IOC rather than the IBA. The IOC suspended the IBA in 2019 because of concerns over its finances, governance, ethics, refereeing and judging. Having failed to meet required reforms set out by the IOC, the IBA was stripped of its status as the sport's world governing body in 2023. That decision was upheld in April 2024 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following an appeal. The IOC's decision to strip the IBA of its status came four months after the body disqualified Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting from the 2023 World Championships. In 2021, the IOC released a framework on 'Fairness, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity and Sex Variations', external. The document sets out 10 principles - not rules - for national bodies to follow when selecting athletes for the Games. The IOC said it "supports the participation of any athlete who has qualified and met the eligibility criteria to compete in the Olympic Games as established by their IF (International Federation). The IOC will not discriminate against an athlete who has qualified through their IF (International Federation), on the basis of their gender identity and/or sex characteristics." What testing is conducted in boxing? In 2019, the IOC delegated responsibility for the organisation and management of doping control at the Olympics to the International Testing Agency (ITA). The IOC said it took a "zero-tolerance policy" to anyone found using or providing doping products. Tests include, but are not excluded to, determining an athlete's levels of testosterone. "There are many women with higher levels of testosterone than men," said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams. "So the idea that a testosterone test is a magic bullet is actually not true." Is this a transgender debate? No. There is no suggestion that Khelif identifies as transgender or intersex. What have people said? "It matters to be able to compete on equal grounds and, from my point of view, it was not an even contest," - Italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni. "I think it has hurt Olympic boxing at a crucial time where its future is still being discussed. It's an absolute disaster," Steve Bunce, 5 Live commentator "If you've got one boxer who far outweighs the strength of another based against eligibility criteria and testing, that would suggest that that person is not fit to be within the female category of the competition," Chris Roberts, CEO of IBA "I would urge we try to take the culture war out of this and actually address the issues and the people and think about the people concerned and the real damage that is being done by misinformation," Mark Adams, IOC spokesperson. "It was an incredibly uncomfortable watch for the 46 seconds that it lasted and I know there is a lot of concern about women competitors about whether we are getting the balance right in not just in boxing but other sports as well," Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Crime / US Woman Freed After 43 Years In Prison For Murder She Didn’t Commit by Oladat(m): 11:00pm On Jul 20 |
A woman who served 43 years for a murder she did not commit has been released after her conviction was overturned. Sandra Hemme was 20 years old when she was found guilty of stabbing to death library worker Patricia Jeschke from St Joseph, Missouri, in November 1980. She was given a life sentence. There was no evidence that linked her to the crime other than a confession she gave under heavy sedation in a psychiatric hospital, a review into her case found. Now 64, she is believed to have served the longest known wrongful conviction of a woman in US history according to her representatives. Her legal team at the Innocence Project said they are grateful that Ms Hemme is finally reunited with her family, and they will “continue to fight” to clear her name. While she is no longer incarcerated, her case is still being reviewed. Circuit Court Judge Ryan Horsman’s original 118-page ruling overturning her conviction came on 14 June. It said Ms Hemme’s lawyers had clear proof of her innocence, including evidence that was not given to her defence team at the time. "This court finds that the totality of the evidence supports a finding of actual innocence," Judge Horsman concluded. The review found that local police ignored evidence that directly pointed to one of their own officers - Michael Holman – who later went to prison for another crime and died in 2015. Holman’s truck was seen in the area the day of the murder, his alibi could not be corroborated, and he used Patricia Jeschke’s credit card after claiming he found it in a ditch. A pair of distinctive gold earrings identified by Ms Jeschke’s father were also found in Holman’s home. None of this was disclosed to Ms Hemme’s defence team at the time, the review said. Ms Hemme was interrogated by police several times under the influence of antipsychotic medication and a powerful sedative after being involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital. She had been receiving occasional psychiatric treatment since she was 12 years old. Her responses were “monosyllabic” and she was “not totally cognisant of what was going on”, court documents showed, and at times could barely hold her head up straight and was in pain from muscle spasms – a side effect of the medications. Judge Horsman’s review noted that no forensic evidence linked Ms Hemme to the murder. She had no motive and there were no witnesses linking her to the crime. Sandra Hemme finally left prison on Friday, and the Kansas City Star reports that she will live with her sister. After her release she was reunited with family in a nearby park, where she hugged her sister, daughter and granddaughter. Her father had been hospitalised and was receiving palliative care this week. Her legal team said she was planning to visit him as soon as she can. Defence lawyer Sean O’Brien told the Star that she will still need help because she has spent most of her life in prison and was ineligible for social security. Crime / Kenyan Policeman Shoots Magistrate In Open Court by Oladat(m): 10:11pm On Jun 13 |
By Basillioh Rukanga, BBC News, Nairobi A senior Kenyan police officer has been shot dead after he opened fire at a magistrate in court in the capital, Nairobi. The chief inspector opened fire on Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti shortly after she made a ruling in a case reportedly involving his wife. The officer is said to have been angered by the court's decision to cancel her bail after she had absconded. The officer, identified as Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, who is in charge of a police station in Londiani in western Kenya, then pulled out a gun and shot the magistrate, injuring her. Other officers in court responded immediately, with one of them shooting the offending policeman and killing him. In the process, three other officers were injured, a police report said. The magistrate and the injured officers are being treated in hospital. The judiciary said the magistrate had "cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond". "Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip,” it said in a statement. It noted initial reports that indicated "that the shooter is a police officer who is married to the suspect". The national police service said the officer was in the court for "unknown reasons". Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances that led to the shooting, it said. The incident inside a courtroom has come as a shock to Kenyans. The police have often been accused of being involved in extra-judicial killings but no such incident has been reported inside court. The judiciary has said it will enhance security measures and has assured judicial staff and other court users of their safety and security. "As the judiciary family, we wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident,” said chief registrar of the judiciary Winfridah Mokaya. Does that mean that you've been living on your sister's charity before now? 2. As in the case of Muhammad and the montain, if your relatives aren't coming for the kids, what stops you from taking the kids to them? 3. What about the father of the kids? Please I am begging you in the name of whatever you believe in, let the orphanage be the very last option. It should be at the bottom of the options barrel. If you've ever worked with/for some of this orphanages, you won't pray for the kids of your very worst enemy to pass through them, never mind your own nephews. |

Crime / US Woman Shoots Uber Driver She Believed Was Kidnapping Her by Oladat(m): 4:30pm On Jun 26, 2023 |
A US woman has been charged with murder after shooting an Uber driver she thought was kidnapping her, police say. According to police in the border city of El Paso, Texas, Phoebe Copas believed she was being taken into Mexico. She then shot driver Daniel Piedra Garcia, the authorities said in a statement. The 52-year-old died in hospital after several days on life support. As she was in the car, Copas saw traffic signs that read Juarez, Mexico, according to police documents. The two cities lie side-by-side on either side of the US-Mexico border. Police documents further explain that after thinking she was being kidnapped, Copas pulled a gun from her handbag and shot the driver in the head. The car then hit barriers before coming to a stop. Copas - who is from Kentucky but was visiting her boyfriend - is alleged to have then called the emergency number 911, took a photo of the driver and texted it to her boyfriend. "The investigation does not support that a kidnapping took place or that Piedra was veering from Copas' destination," El Paso police statement said. Foreign Affairs / India Official Empties Dam To Retrieve Lost Phone by Oladat(m): 12:30am On May 27, 2023 |
By Mattea Bubalo BBC News A government official in India has been suspended after he ordered a reservoir to be drained to retrieve his phone. It took three days to pump millions of litres of water out of the dam, after Rajesh Vishwas dropped the device while taking a selfie. By the time it was found, the phone was too water-logged to work. Mr Vishwas claimed it contained sensitive government data and needed retrieving, but he has been accused of misusing his position. The food inspector dropped his Samsung phone, worth about $1,200 (100,000 rupees), into Kherkatta Dam, in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, on Sunday. After local divers failed to find it, he paid for a diesel pump to be brought in, Mr Vishwas said in a video statement quoted in Indian media. He said he had verbal permission from an official to drain "some water into a nearby canal", adding that the official said it "would in fact benefit the farmers who would have more water". The pump ran for several days, emptying out some two million litres (440,000 gallons) of water - reportedly enough to irrigate 6 sq km (600 hectares) of farmland. His mission was stopped when another official, from the water resource department, arrived following a complaint. "He has been suspended until an inquiry. Water is an essential resource and it cannot be wasted like this," Priyanka Shukla, a Kanker district official, told The National newspaper. Mr Vishwas has denied misusing his position, and said that the water he drained was from the overflow section of the dam and "not in usable condition". But his actions have drawn criticism from politicians, with the state's opposition BJP party's national Vice-President tweeting, "When people are depending upon tankers for water facility in in scorching summers, the officer has drained 41 lakh litres which could have been used for irrigation purpose for 1,500 acres of land."
