Nairaland / General / Airport 3D-scanners Show unclothed Images by OlamideSowole(m): 6:12pm On Oct 05, 2010 |
According to THISDAY Newspaper - The 3D full-body scanners procured for thorough body check of passengers at the nation’s major airports for security reasons are now being abused by security officialsfrom the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). They use the machines, installed in the wake of the Farouk AbdulMutallab affair, to watch the unclothed images of female passengers for fun. The controversial body scanners have been dubbed “e-stripping” in advanced countries because of the way they expose the unclothedness of those being screened. THISDAY discovered that during off-peak periods, the aviation security officials, who are trained on the use of the scanners, usually stroll from the cubicle located in a hidden corner on the right side of the screening area where the 3D full-body scanner monitors are located. They do so to catch a glimpse of some of the passengers entering themachine and immediately go back to view the unclothed images, in order to match the faces with the images since the faces are blurred on the monitors while passengers are inside the machine. The face that appears on the scanner’s monitor is usually blurred so that the operator viewing the full body will not recognise who passes through the machine. But by coming out to see the passenger in person and then going back to see his or her image, the objective of protecting the privacy of the passenger has been defeated. But now the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in separate statements faulted THISDAY's report, saying that the frame involved in the screening process would not make it possible for the monitoring officer to scan and at the same time come out to identify the person accessing the 3Dfull body scan. "If you look at where those scanners are located, it is unreasonable for anybody to leave what he's doing at the screening and rush to compare the body or the face of the individual that pass through the machine. When you are monitoring, you can't see the person's full body, what you see is blood. It is when the person has some strange objects that the machine signals the part of the body where the objects are located. The monitor is 10 metres from the screening point and there's no way one can leave the control room to the screening center to go and look at anything. So the reports are not true" Said Mr. Akin Olukunle, GM, Public Affairs unit, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Story by THISDAY Visit www.nigeriafilms.com/news/9169/33/now-showing-at-mmia-unclothed-images-of-passengers-faan.html for image |

I cannot be fooled when it comes to science. There is no known method to convert one's blood group. But I know of a method which involves the bone marrow(body blood group manufacturer) it works on very very few number of people and does not completely change it as some of the previous blood group remains.Besides very little is known of this method so I have to classify this as false since such unreliable technology does not as of this present moment exist in 9ja. |

Nairaland / General / Nigeria's Day Pigeons Refuse To Fly by OlamideSowole(m): 6:44pm On Sep 28, 2010 |
Nigeria: Day Pigeons Refused To Fly By Soji Alabi It was at the climax of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration 2010 on 15th January 2010, during the parade and laying of wreathes at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cenotaph in Umuahia, the state capital of Abia State. The state governor after performing the traditional laying of wreath with the other Service chiefs and dignitaries was to perform the next assignment of releasing the pigeons to symbolize peace in the state. There were eighteen pigeons to be released, each pigeon representing each of the seventeen local government areas in the state and the last one for Abia state as a whole. The governor was to pronounce peace on the pigeons starting with Abia State before releasing the pigeon into the air. A bird was released into the air followed by “may peace be upon Abia state” by the governor. ( Continues below…, ) Dramatically, the pigeon instead of flying away fell on the ground, the next one “let there be peace in Aba South” echoed the governor, and yet the poor bird fell on the ground. The next was Aba North, not even the plea by the governor to the bird to “please fly now” could make the bird to fly. The other local government areas were called and the birds refused to fly. The governor had to pour water on the ground for the pigeons to drink, and at the point the birds were very happy. The interesting part of the whole episode was that from my observing position, I could hear people saying after the governor has mentioned each of the local government what characterized the particular Local Government. For instance when Abia South and North were mentioned people chanted no salary for workers for the past one year, Isiala Ngwa North and South , home of kidnapping, Obingwa home of armed bandit, it goes on and on like that. Ironically, pigeons are birds bred for their navigational abilities and they symbolize peace wherever they are found. It is a common sight of joy and excitement for any visitor to Trafalgar Square in London where thousands of pigeons are let loose to fly about visitors innocently without any form of restriction. Little wonder when William Hamilton, a Scottish Politician said in My Queen and I that “the Tourists who came to our Island take in the Monarchy along with feeding the pigeons in Trafalgar Square” to show the importance Britons and the rest of the world attached to pigeons. ( Continues below…, ) Photo Above: Map of Abia State, Nigeria Click Adjourning Link For Enlarged Photo:- http://nigeriamasterweb.com/Etc/ AbiaMapLarge.jpg While sitting back to monitor how the ceremony went all over the nation on the Nigeria Television Authority network news, I could see the speed at which pigeons released by the other state governors flew out of their cages where they were kept. One could then imagine why Abia’s (Governor T.A Orji’s) pigeons refused to fly. Perhaps, the reasons may not be far-fetched. It is the same story all over the state. Workers are not paid their salaries for months, there is insecurity all over the place, crime and crime rate are on the increase, teachers’ wages are being withheld, and small scale industries are under the yoke of heavy levies by the state government. Some prominent citizens have had to relocate to neighboring states for fear of being kidnapped, and all of these have led to bad governance in the state. That little side attraction of the event of that day did not just happen as a coincidence, but it portends a deplorable situation of things in the state . It then became understandable why the pigeons refused to fly, apparently, the pigeons have not been fed for some days while they were been caged, hence they have no strength to fly. The truth remains that nobody talks about feeding common pigeons when human beings are hungry and starving. This is a food for thought. *Soji Alabi is a media consultant, and he writes from Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. He can be reached at sojialabi@yahoo.com View @ http://ww |

You seem to be an atheist. You ask what god created ,as i have said before "all".Why? You ask again, well all to the glorification of his name.I believe in God so much because the ability of man is limited we know very little of everything yet the little we know seems to baffle us,some being out there perfected everything if you take the scientific route it all just doesn't seem logical.Okay let me brief you, according to science a subatomic particle exploded to form the universe every last light year of it and beyond, after that some billion years later earth is formed, a meteor smashes into earth containing a non living substance contained in our body amino acid which then magically(they can't explain how) evolve till it got to me and you and we are still evolving.I have no problem with evolution but somewhere around particle exploding and amino acid forming life I get lost.I have come to my verdict about all this I leave you to make yours. |

How can all the factors that create the beginning of life and the universe be mere coincidence.I mean do you know what the big bang theory is ,the big bang is the mute explosion of a single subatomic particle to form all the universe all happening within 1000th of a millisecond so fast not even the human brain can comprehend .How can a normal human believe that a particle so small even a microscope cannot detect formed the stars ,the earth even Me and you, it is just not right i believe in all of hawkings works but this is just unheard of ,some being should play a part in all this and that being my friends is God who determines our fate he who created life on earth ,all the factors to support life are just too numerous to be mere coincidence.God created all. |
Nairaland / General / Driver Of Killer Truck Finally Speaks To Media About His Horrific Story After More Than A Year by OlamideSowole(m): 1:58am On Aug 24, 2010 |
This seems like the sadest experience a man can go through in life. After more than year he can now summon the courage to speak about it. The truck driver involved in the runover and crushing to death of at least 19 Nigerians on Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu expressway, has spoken out to newsmen. Late last month Masterweb News Desk carried an article on the highway robbery of a Nigerian luxury bus on lagos- benin expressway which led to the truck-crushing death of many people. The article can be read at http://nigeriamasterweb.com/blog/ index.php/2010/02/25/ nigeria_highway_robbery_aamp_gruesome_ma The two drivers at the center of the armed robbery attack and crushing to death of passengers controversy, have been arrested by police in Abuja. The drivers are: Osayande Idahosa, 40, who hails from Edo State and driver of the crusher truck with registration number XN 808 BEN and Okechukwu Okafor, driver of the robbed Young Shall Grow luxury bus with registration number XF 285 AKD. Okafor hails from Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State. The arrests followed recent motion by the Senate for investigations into the expressway mayhem that put in doubt police capacity in tackling crime in the country. Osayande Idahosa, driver of the killer truck, told reporters the incident took place July 31 last year at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State. Idahosa said on the fateful day, he was driving a Seaner Truck hired by a woman to deliver bags of garri to customers. According to him, he took-off from Benin en route Lagos in company of his conductor and the truck renter. The journey according to Idahosa met heavy traffic jam at Ore which finally paved way to lonely highway up to Obalende area of Ijebu-Ode. On sighting the headlights of a vehicle around 9.45 pm Idahosa said he became more relaxed. “When I saw the lights, I was happy. I did not know that it was an evil light that will continue to haunt me till eternity,” Idahosa told Daily Sun newsmen. According to his account, as they approached the vehicle, he sighted what seemed like barricades of logs of wood on the highway. “I thought it was a police check-point, so I slowed down. But I started hearing gun shots. I saw many people firing at me. Out of panic, I decided to run over what I assumed were logs of woods,” Idahosa speaking in tears told reporters. He said all three of them in the truck panicked as he drove through in high speed, but was thrown in confusion as he heard human cries. The truck wavered through human bodies and ended up in the forest. ( Continues below…… ) Photo Above: Osayande Idahosa, driver of the killer truck In his words to Sun newsmen Idahosa said: “As my truck ran over the ‘barricades’, I noticed that they were too soft. I also heard gun shots and agonizing cries of people. I suspected that I must have killed some people but I did not know who my victims were. I couldn’t control the vehicle and it ran into the bush. I immediately jumped down and took to my heels. While in the bush, I saw about 20 armed men in civilian clothes searching for me. They were boasting that they would soon fish me out and slaughter me in pieces. At this time, I did not know the fate of my conductor or that of the woman who hired me.” Idahosa said that while the armed robbers where searching his truck, he ran deeper into the forest and hid in a hole. He said he hid in the hole till about 6.00 am the following morning, before finding his way to the highway. He was told by a fellow driver that he had crushed to death 19 innocent lives and advised not to go near the scene of the bloodshed as he would definitely be lynched by the angry mob. Idahosa got a ride from the driver to Ijebu-Ode junction, where he took an okada (commercial motorcycle) to Obalende police station, where he made a statement to the police. The police took his statement and told him to go back to the scene where at the time, the Commissioner of Police, the Divisional Police Officer and other senior policemen were for an on-the-spot-assessment. Idahosa said when he got to the scene and saw the havoc, shredded corpses after corpses, he wept and surrendered to the police and crowd. He explained: “But rather than stoning me to death, they all started listening to my story on how I unintentionally killed innocent robbery victims who I mistook to be robbers’ barricades. The sympathizers started consoling me, telling me it was not my fault. The policemen took me along with them and I was with them for four days before I was granted bail.” ( Continues below…… ) Photo Above: The killer truck driven by Osayande Idahosa Okechukwu Okafor, driver of the ill-fated luxury bus, blames the tragedy on bad road condition. According to a statement to Daily Sun newsmen, Okafor said their journey started in the morning of July 31, 2009 at Enugu en route Lagos. He said the trip was smooth until 3.00 pm when they were held up in Ore for four hours by heavy traffic jam. According to him, on reaching a point between the Federal Government College, Odogbolu and Babcock University junction along Ijebu-Ode/Shagamu Expressway, their bus was forced to a stop by armed robbers numbering around 50. Okafor fearing for his life and knowing he did not stand a chance against the intimidating number of the bandits, fled into the forest. He said he heard gun shots and wailing of people in agony while in the forest. In his own words: “I thought it was the robbery gang that was killing my passengers. It was not until the following morning when I found my way out of the bush that I learnt that it was a truck driver who refused to stop for the robbers that ran over my passengers.” Okafor said he weeps when confronted with the tragedy and bloodshed of his passengers. “You know, right from the park at Enugu down to the scene of the ugly incident, we had all become friendly. In fact, in my 22 years of driving, I had not seen or heard such a story that looked like a fairy tale,” Okafor told Sun newsmen. Police report on the incident states that: “On the 31st of July 2009, at about 11. 30 a.m, a luxurious bus with registration above, loaded with passengers travelling from Enugu to Lagos were attacked by a gang of armed bandits at a spot between Federal Government College, Odogbolu and Babcock University along Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu expressway. During the attack, the suspected armed robbers ordered the passengers of the luxury bus out of the vehicle and made them to lie face down on the expressway. An on-coming truck with reg. XN 808 BEN, driven by one Osayinde Idahosa of Ewetube Egbe Estate, Benin City, who refused to be stopped by the hoodlums, crushed some of the passengers to death. A a total of 19 passengers of the luxury bus which includes 6 females and 13 males were crushed to death by the truck and that there was no Police escort attached to the luxury bus as confirmed by the driver, Okechukwu Okafor who survived the incident. Some of the ten corpses have been collected by their relations for burial after proper identification and documentation and that some of the corpses were crushed beyond recognition and yet to be identified or collected by their relations or kinsmen.” Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, speaking to reporters said: “Following some offensive photographs being posted on the internet by some mischievous people who made the incident looked like it happened recently, the force would like to inform the public that the ugly accident happened on July 31, 2009.” He said 19 passengers, including six females and 13 males, were crushed to death by the truck, and that the file in respect of the case had been duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice. Mr. Ojukwu’s comments on mischievous postings on the incident does not apply to Masterweb updated news report, which referenced Sunday Tribune 2/8/09 article on the incident. |
Nairaland / General / Hotel Manager Dispels Allegations That Masked Robbers That Robbed His Hotel Are Nigerians After Fore by OlamideSowole(m): 1:46am On Aug 24, 2010 |
See how many foreigners jump into conclusions about nigerians, after the australians were robbed in the south african world cup they were swift to claim that the masked robbers were nigerians. the following was then published "Nine soccer fans were tied up and robbed at gunpoint with one victim raped, in a terrifying hold-up in their hotel rooms following the Australia-Serbia World Cup match in South Africa. The fans which included five Australians, were on their way back to the hotel in the early hours of Thursday morning, June 24, after the match. The Socceroos of Australia defeated Serbia 2-1 in the encounter. According to reports reaching Masterweb News Desk, four armed men trailed nine soccer fans back to their hotel in Nelspruit, South Africa, invading their rooms and robbing them, allegedly raping a female victim. Steve Gaynor, one of the victims who had $10,000 worth of equipments stolen from him said the robbers were Nigerians. He said the men were armed with rifles and handguns, and five of the victims, including himself and the raped female, Australians. According to Gaynor, one of the victims, an off-duty Australian Federal Police officer, for safety reasons, kept others calm during the robbery and assault. ( Continues below…… ) Photo Above: Steve Gaynor, one of the World Cup robbery victims. “I had watched the match from the hotel that night and about 12.30 am three cars arrived back at the hotel and people started filing in. I was in the bar and some people came in there while others went back to their rooms. We were oblivious to what was going on. These poor kids were tied up, held at gunpoint and robbed. My room was robbed, but luckily I wasn’t in there when they broke through the window.” Gaynor was quoted as telling reporters. “They took cash, jewelry and watches off the people they had tied up and stole phones and laptops. It was robbery with violence. One guy was on the floor and the man had his boot on his head and told him not to move or he is dead - it was serious.” Gaynor added. Masterweb will keep you updated as more information becomes available." After this was said about nigerians, the hotel manager,a man who grew up in south africa and has witnessed both nigerians and south africans alike denied the allegations that the robbers were nigerians. This was then published "Masterweb News Team contacted Mr. Kurt Mulder, owner of Hamilton Parks Country Lodge where four gunmen robbed World Cup soccer fans guests of the hotel. He told our news team reaching him on the phone that the gunmen were South Africans and not Nigerians. On asking him how he knew the identity of the gunmen he said: “I am a South African and should know South Africans when I see them. Above all, I am an African and you know we know ourselves – I can tell a South African from a Nigerian.” He said the female victim was not raped, but tied up along with others including him, in the same room. Mulder said he was 2 meters away from the female victim and did not see her assaulted by the robbers. Hamilton Parks Country Lodge is in Hazyview, an isolated area north-east of Johannesburg, South Africa. The hotel according to Masterweb investigations, has witnessed several robbery incidents which South African police failed to investigate appropriately. Several robberies have also occurred at Kruger National Park around the corner from Hamilton Parks Country Lodge, without significant arrests by South African police. ( Continues below…… ) Photo Above: Hamilton Parks Country Lodge, Hazyview, South Africa. Masterweb investigations revealed the gunmen did not trail the soccer fans, but hid in the bushland surrounding the hotel. Hamilton Parks Country Lodge is surrounded by over 250 hectares of indigenous bushland. Shortly after midnight, after fans arrived the hotel from the World Cup match between Australia and Serbia, the hotel owner, who doubled as manager, stepped out to welcome them into the hotel, but was accosted by the gunmen. The robbers ordered him at gunpoint to “get back in.” He went in and the gunmen locked the door, ordering everyone in that section of the hotel, including the owner, to lie down. They tied their hands behind their backs with shoestrings and robbed them of valuables, including, cell (mobile) phones, laptops, passports, money, etc. They also went from room to room stealing all that were of interest to them. Captain Jacky Mbuyane, South African police officer investigating the crime, said the Australian female victim was sexually assaulted, and got medical treatment, but she was not raped. In his words: “Emotionally, she was hurt. She was upset.” ( Continues below…… ) Photo Above: Map of South Africa The victims were freed after the robbers left. South Africa police and embassies of victims were contacted with details of the incident. Consular officials from Australian High Commission in Pretoria assisted victims in getting medical treatment, issuing emergency travel documents to their citizens." Many nigerians like myself on reading this became angry as to how nigeria is always the first suspect in a crime without proof or evidence |

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Jumps To Death In India by OlamideSowole(m): 12:45am On Aug 24, 2010 |
What suprises me the most, the guy died running for a crime he did'nt commit. [ Indrani Basu ] NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old Nigerian succumbed to his injuries when he jumped from the first floor of his Uttam Nagar residence on Wednesday evening. According to police, Okei tried to flee from them after he found that police was in pursuit of another Nigerian national Peter, who lives in the same house, under the charges of drug peddling. The incident occurred around 8.30pm when the deceased came to know that locals had tracked down Peter and were about to hand him over to police. Said deputy commissioner of police (west) Sharad Aggarwal to Times City, "The Sonepat police had visited to Peter's Om Vihar residence four days ago. When they did not find him there, they had asked the owner of the house to keep an eye out for him. The houseowner, with the help of a few locals, succeeded in catching hold of Peter on Wednesday and alerted police. Fearing that he might also get arrested, Okei jumped from the first floor in an attempt to escape and suffered severe injuries in his head. He was declared brought dead in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.'' Local police arrested Peter on Thursday under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act following the arrest of his lady accomplice recently, in Sonepat. Peter was later handed over to the Sonepat police. Okei was a garment exporter in the city, said police. It is still not clear why he feared arrest. Police are investigating the case. |
Nairaland / General / Nigerian Couple Kill Househelp by OlamideSowole(m): 12:31am On Aug 24, 2010 |
A couple in Lagos, yesterday, buried their faces in shame as their house helps painted a gory picture on how they allegedly killed another house help in a dehumanizing manner. The couple, who were paraded yesterday at the Police Public Relations Office (PPRO), Ikeja, escaped being lynched by the mob who were moved by the narration of Chukwuebuka and Emmanuel. Givng a graphic account on how the 14-year-old Sunny Oriaku was chained to death in the toilet for over four days, Chukwuebuka said: “Oriaku died without food. As he was dying, he begged for food but our madam said he should die. She said if he dies, she would only compensate the family with a token of N200,000. “We were three house helps. We all were suffering the same fate but Oriaku was unlucky. The madam used to starve us for days. She would then chain us in the toilet for days.” He revealed that the madam and her husband (names withheld) beat them up to pulp. He said on the fateful day, the madam accused Emmanuel of stealing fish from her pot of soup, but she later found out that it was Oriaku that stole the fish. He alleged that the madam and her husband tied Oriaku hands and legs in chains. “Oriaku was begging that he was stooling but they would not have mercy on him. It was at the point of death that they bought herbal medicine prepared locally but Oriaku could not make it as he died four days later.” The other house help, Emmanuel whose body was full of marks said: “As I am sitting before you, I may soon die. I had been in chains for five days in company with Oriaku.” He said they were denied food and water for days forcing them to drink their urine. According to him, the couple who he described as wicked had subjected them to serious torture and that he was forced to report to the Okota Police Station. “The police asked them to sign an undertaking that they would not torture us again, but few days they started torturing us.” He accused them of defiling his two-year-old baby. “I warned them about it. My wife used to beat them and deny them food but I did not subscribe to that, so I used to prepare food for them.” He denied killing Oriaku saying the boy died of stooling. His wife, who claimed she was six months pregnant said she did not kill Oriaku. “I won’t say I don’t beat my house helps. I used to do so, but I did not kill Oriaku.” Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba exhibited the dangerous weapons such as pestle, hammer, iron belt, plank and chain that the couple were using to torture their house helps. He warned guardians to desist from torturing their wards or house helps. He said the police would prosecute the couple to serve as deterrent to other couples who believe in torturing their house helps. Mba, who described the couple’s house as a torture camp said the house helps had been subjected to dehumanizing treatment. “They went through mental and physical torture. What the surviving two need now is rehabilitation,” he said. |
Nairaland / General / Woman Strips In Front Of Busy Over Fight For Man by OlamideSowole(m): 12:20am On Aug 24, 2010 |
Can you go this far for a man? A WOMAN caused uproar in a busy restaurant yesterday after brawling with a love-rival, then stripping off in front of shocked children. Patrons were enjoying their breakfasts when the two women began scrapping close to the entrance of the Cool Spot Cafe in Fannie Bay, a suburb of Darwin. Witnesses said the 39-year-old woman had a full-on fist fight over a man before stripping off and smoking a cigarette in the buff as customers looked on in disbelief. "That was just a shocker," said Fernando Dentes, who was managing the restaurant at the time. "People were trying to eat." Children were rushed inside the venue and police were called to escort the naked woman away. She was fined and taken home. It was unclear whether she was drunk. Mr Dentes, 34, said staff alerted police after customers complained about the striptease. "The two ladies were arguing about the fella they were there with," he said. "It was pretty verbal. One had the other on the ground." "She was pretty much just defending herself and then she was lifting up her shirt and showing her breasts. She took off her clothes , lit a cigarette and laid down," he added. |
Nairaland / General / Mum "asked To Clean Hospital After Birth" by OlamideSowole(m): 12:06am On Aug 24, 2010 |
If you think nigerian hospitals are bad then let me show you something worse. NURSES asked a mother to clean her own room two days after she gave birth by C-section because they were short staffed, Swedish media reported. Over-worked nurses asked mother-of-two Elin Andersson to strip the sheets from her own hospital bed and tidy up before she was discharged from a hospital in Sundsvall, northern Sweden, local newspaper Sundsvalls Tidning said. The request was among a list of problems Ms Andersson had at the hospital. She said had to call nurses every time she needed her medicine because nurses forgot to give it to her. And her partner was also asked to help care for her while she was in hospital because nurses had other patients to deal with. Ms Andersson said the final insult came when she decided to go home: ”That was when the midwife said I had one final task to perform. Then she went and got a big white laundry bag and asked me to clean out the room and the bed where I had lain.” Two midwives at the Sundsvall hospital ward admitted that Ms Andersson's claims were true. Midwife Gunnel Westerlund said: ”She describes precisely those bits that we don't have time for. Medical safety always comes first and you can't leave (another) mother while she's giving birth.i |
Nairaland / General / Foreign Police Lack The Liver To Arrest Nigerians by OlamideSowole(m): 11:35pm On Aug 13, 2010 |
Even the cops don't dare to step into the den of Nigerian thugs. Unable to match the muscle power of these big-bodied Africans, many of who are involved in e-mail scams or drug peddling cases, the police are now turning to local bodybuilders and bouncers for protection. The Mumbai and Thane police have developed a network of around 100 such well-built men to tackle Nigerian offenders. ILLUSTRATION/SATISH ACHARYA Bad experience In a recent case on Saturday, the Thane rural police raided nondescript localities in Mira Road and Nalasopara and picked up 15 foreign nationals. This of course with a team of 20 bodybuilders and 20 policemen. "We have recently arrested 15 Nigerians involved in illegal activities. However, this would not have been possible without the help of the bodybuilders. These hefty and violent ruffians don't hesitate to attack the police," said Nagnath Sampatvad, deputy superintendent of police, Thane. "It becomes difficult to tackle them without someone who can match their power. In such cases, local bodybuilders and bouncers come to our rescue," he admitted. Tough luck Police officials confess that their early attempts to nab Nigerian suspects have failed. "We had several bitter experiences. Many a times, we have reached the spot to catch these goondas red-handed, but have failed. They are strong and many of our officials are no match for them," said a police officer, requesting anonymity. In fact, the cops now plan the arrests well in advance. In an incident earlier this week, a manager of a coffee shop was assaulted by an African. The police have a tip-off that he is a resident of Moti Nagar in Mira Road, which is popularly known as Nigerianwadi among police circles. However, they have not gone ahead and made the arrest. "We have seized the mobile phone of the suspect and have even tracked him down. But now we are looking out for bodybuilders. We will take at least four of them along with us to ensure that the offender does not give us a slip," said Suresh Nalavde, senior police inspector, Versova police station. Quick buck But what is in it for these bodybuilders? They often get injured during the operation, but many don't mind bearing the pain, as they feel it's a quick way to make some big bucks. "We get paid Rs 500 per day(N1500), so a little bruises here and there do not hurt," said one bodybuilder from Nalasopara, who has helped the local police in a few arrests. Brian Coria (27), who lives near Nigerianwadi, has been part of the cops' network for almost a year now. Though he is not a bodybuilder, Coria is well built and a helpful hand for the cops. "Wherever there is a raid, we get a call from the cops. We help in arresting the suspects and taking them to the chowky. Sometimes, we are called to take them to court as well," he said. "Fighting the Africans is no cakewalk, as they are very aggressive. We often get beaten up, but by helping the police we are serving the society," he added.
