Politics / Gokana LGA Rivers Under Attack by olawalemicheal: 4:26pm On Jan 11, 2016
In what appears to be a reckless and needless show of force, Gokana Local Government Area has been placed under siege. Sources from the Gokana local government report that the blockade began early this morning.

“We saw Senator Magnus Abe and Dakuku Peterside arrive with a truck of over 200 army and security officials. We thought they were just passing through until the soldiers starting shooting.” Baridolere, a trader said.

Persistent shooting through the day has caused many of the residents in the area to flee, with families reportedly forced to run into the neighboring woods for cover. Just how many people have been wounded or killed is currently unclear. Calls for a restoration of order have been ignored.

The current offensive is likely to be one in a series of steps currently being machinated by the APC to wrest control from regions that they hold little sway in. Following the humbling loss of the Bayelsa State election, the APC has come under increased pressure to win in Rivers State—and gain a strategic foothold in the Niger delta. Many within the party view the Rivers State election as the party’s last hope of securing a south-south state.

Many political analyst; however, believe that an APC victory in Rivers State is unrealistic and quite impossible. Eight months ago, the PDP won the Rivers State election in a landslide victory, garnering close to the 92% of the votes. Governor Wike’s strong standing with the residents has only grown even more.

Watchdog is working to get pictures of the sieged town. Details to follow shortly.

Politics / Olisa Metuh Celebrates Birthday At IDP Camp by olawalemicheal: 2:34pm On Nov 30, 2015
The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, at the weekend wined and dined with hundreds of internally displaced persons camped at the Wassa suburb town of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

Metuh accompanied by his wife, members of his family and friends, made their way to the remote village called Wassa where he celebrated his birthday, cutting the cake and sharing meal with the displaced persons, mostly women and children.
It was a dramatic and touchy moment to behold as the people broke out in joyful celebration on sighting a big truck fully loaded with various food items, including, bags of rice, cartons of tomatoes, salt, beverages, soft drinks and water approaching their temporary homes.

Most of the women who along with children received food items and drinks expressed gratitude to the Metuh family for remembering them, especially at a time when they are in great need.
Speaking with journalists who were there to witness the philanthropic gesture, Metuh said he felt the need to use the opportunity of his 50th birthday to come and commune with the persons driven from their home states in the North-east by insurgents.

The PDP spokesman lamented the humanitarian crisis which the continued activities of the insurgents have brought to the country, adding that government must have to do all within its powers to ensure that the terrorists are driven out the country.
An official of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Hassan Amina, was on hand to help receive and distribute the food items to the residents of the IDP camp.
Amina who serves as the Relief and Rehabilitation Officer said NEMA and other government disaster and emergency agencies had rendered assistance to the people in the camp.

She however described the quantum of food items donated by Metuh as the biggest individual intervention since the displaced indigenes of the crisis-ridden North-eastern part of the country came to settle in the place.
“As I told you, NEMA does not have a government designated IDP camp in Abuja. So the federal government is trying to relocate them

other government-designated camp. This is not an official IDP camp, it is just a temporary setting,” she said
Although Amina said NEMA has the capacity to monitor what is happening at the camp, she however confessed that it has not been easy managing and overseeing the camp.

Politics / As Fuel Scarcity Lingers; What Is President Buhari Doing? by olawalemicheal: 3:57pm On Nov 25, 2015
Nigeria, the supposed “GIANT OF AFRICA”, has been recurrently battling challenges with Fuel Supply and the most recent fuel scarcity in the country which has lingered for over 3 weeks now has left the average Nigerian in an incorrigible state.
The very important question that Nigerians are asking is what is President Muhammadu Buhari doing to salvage the situation? Ever since President Buhari assumed office on the 29th of May, there has been a downturn in the country.

President Buhari had made himself the Minister of Petroleum Resources but does not seem to be bothered about the fact that millions of people are suffering over this fuel scarcity.

All Nigerians have gotten is talk, talk, talk, and talk but we await action, action, and more action. President Buhari had promised Nigerians that he will hit the ground running but all we can see is that he hit the ground crawling.

The minimum wage in Nigeria currently stands at N18,000 of which Governors in Nigeria are said to be contemplating reducing it (that is another story entirely) and yet people are surprised to hear of robberies every day. What is the common man expected to do?

Transportation fees have doubled and we cannot hold the transporters accountable because of the ridiculous amount of money that they pay to get fuel not to mention the stress involved. People stay on queues for hours daily just to get fuel and we are supposed to be an oil producing nation! Honestly, I weep for Nigeria.

Just a few weeks ago, the pump price of fuel in Nigeria was N87/litre but for over 14 days now the pump price for at least 80% of petrol stations in the South of Nigeria stands at N170/litre.

Again what is President Buhari doing as the fuel scarcity continues to deteriorate?

NIGERIANS REACT TO FUEL SCARCITY

Nigerians have now taken to social media to vent their frustration after some Senators under the All Progressives Congress (APC) thwarted a move by another Senator under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) requesting that President Buhari as the Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources be summoned to the Senate to explain why the fuel scarcity has lingered for this long with no visible solution in sight. Below are some reactions from Nigerians on twitter using the hashtag Fuel Scarcity (#fuelscarcity)…

At this point, the only option we have as Nigerians to pray for divine intervention because as humans words fail us. May God help Nigeria!!!

Politics / Charity Begins At Home By Rose Ebi by olawalemicheal: 2:50pm On Nov 25, 2015
From time immemorial, Nigerians have always extended their sympathy to others facing trial while at the same time neglecting their own trials.

The instances are too numerous to highlight but moving forward to the most recent, on the 13th Of November 2015, a group of terrorists affiliated with ISIS attacked Paris, France, leaving no fewer than 129 people dead and many more injured.

The world reacted to the Paris attack which even led the Facebook team to introduce a highlight of the French flag along with profile pictures to show solidarity and let the French know that the world mourns with them.

Interestingly, the day before the Paris attack, a similar attack had happened in Beirut, Lebanon that also saw scores dead but the world waved it off because after all Lebanon was not a First world country and probably didn’t deserve sympathy.

Through all of this, the part that got me very irate was when Nigerians who have neglected the continuous bombings in the North East that led to loss of lives, went on various social media platforms to express and extend their condolences to France.

Scores killed as military, Boko Haram clash in Baga, Northeast Nigeria

What happened to Charity beginning at Home? Have we become so blind and oblivious to our own travails?

On the 26th of July 2009, Nigeria had its first bomb blast which was claimed by Islamist terror group Boko Haram. Till date, the amount of lives that have been lost cannot even be accounted for because of how large the number is.

A mother in distress after Boko Haram kidnapped over 200 school girls in Chibok, Northeast Nigeria

The level of destruction that has been caused by Boko Haram is one that may never ever be recovered.

What efforts have we made to ensure that this issue is eradicated? Do we offer prayers to our innocent brothers and sisters who have died for no reason? Do we join efforts and bring suggestions on ways to fight insurgency? What do we do? It is because we haven’t taken ourselves seriously that’s why the world hasn’t taken us seriously.

Properties destroyed after Boko Haram bomb attack

Do not get me wrong, it is not wrong to show extend condolences, but it should be done bearing in mind that Charity begins at home.

Politics / Kanu Begs For Prison by olawalemicheal: 3:59pm On Nov 24, 2015
Kanu who was brought to court yesterday under heavy security have appealed to the court that he is transferred to a prison to aid him easy access to his legal team.

Meanwhile, at the resumed hearing on the matter yesterday, Kanu, who the government accused of engaging in criminal conspiracy, managing and belonging to an unlawful society, as well as indulging in criminal intimidation, contrary to section 97 (a) & (b) and section 397 of the Penal Code, begged to be transferred to prison custody.

His lawyer, Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obeta, insisted that transferring his client to prison would enable him to have easy access to his legal team.

Obeta made the application shortly after the DSS, yesterday, urged the Magistrate Court to hands-off Kanu’s trial.

The DSS, through its lawyer, Mr Moses Idakwo, told the court that it has already secured an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja to further detain Kanu for another 90 days.

It said that the order which was granted by Justice Ademola Adeniyi, was to enable the government to conclude investigation into an allegation that Kanu was involved in terrorism financing.

Consequently, the DSS, yesterday, applied to withdraw the initial First Information Report, FIR, it lodged against Kanu before the Chief Magistrate Court.

The agency maintained that the government would file a fresh charge against Kanu before a higher court, once its ongoing investigation is concluded.

Idakwo therefore asked Magistrate Usman to step down from the trial on the ground that his court lacks the power and jurisdiction to prosecute terrorism charges.

The application was vehemently opposed by Kanu’s lawyer Obeta, who insisted that the bail earlier granted the accused person, must firstly be complied with before any application for transfer of the case to a federal high court could be entertained.

After listening to both parties, Magistrate Usman adjourned the case till December 1 for ruling.

Politics / KOGI DECIDES: Projects That Might Give Wada Victory. by olawalemicheal: 11:03am On Nov 21, 2015
It is no longer news that the people of Kogi state are preparing to troop out to vote for their preferred candidates in today’s governorship election in the state.

Political analysts across Nigeria have been analyzing the contest with a view to come up with a conclusion on who among the contestants will carry the day at the November 21st elections in the state.

The two major contenders are incumbent, Captain Idris Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former governor of the state, Prince Abubakar Audu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Watchdog news is on ground in the state and has been moving round the nook and crannies of the North central state to understand the feeling of Kogites as regards the elections which will take place in less than 24 hours.

Our investigations have also revealed that the odds favour the sitting governor in the contest as many of those we spoke to have pointed out five major projects of the present administration that they affirmed has impacted on their lives and should be enough to give Governor Wada victory.

Below are the five projects many of the residents have repeatedly referred to:

Ganaja-Otokiti dual carriage bypass: The construction of the 16 kilometre Ganaja-Otokiti dual carriage way in the state which has reached advanced stage is one project that has been hailed by many Kogites. The road is designed to open the state capital to rapid expansion and to transform it from the compressed community it has been over the years to a modern and well-structured city.

Lokoja Modern Park: This is one project that endeared Governor Wada to road transport workers in the state as many of them who spoke to our reporters say it is enough for them to return the governor to power. The park which is located in the Felele area of the state capital will be a one-stop centre for stop-overs, leisure commercial transactions and goods transshipment.

Faculty of Medicine in Teaching Hospital, Anyigba: The Wada administration established the faculty of medicine in the state’s teaching hospital in Anyigba. The project which has attracted commendation from many citizens in the state, has removed the frustration that has long been the lot of Kogi indigenes who before now, had faced tremendous difficulty in gaining admission into medical schools. Work on this project is progressing as scheduled.

Kogi state Medical Diagnostic Centre: This world class project which many Kogi indigenes have benefited from has been developed to enhance tertiary health care, reduce cost of obtaining similar services outside the state and promote medical tourism.
Kogi Hotel Redevelopment: The state owned Kogi hotel which has been the hub of tourism development in the state is set to wear a new look. On completion, the hotel will have world class facilities that will change the face of tourism in the state. Majority of the residents who spoke pointed out that it is important for the state to have a signature hotel to boost tourism in the state, increase the revenue of the government and bring the state at par with other states across the nation.

Politics / Senator Shehu Sani Attacks Nasir El-rufai. by olawalemicheal: 3:50pm On Nov 03, 2015
Going back memory lane On October 17, during a town hall meeting with stakeholders from Kaduna Central, the governor said that anyone who was not in agreement with his appointments could “go and climb the Kufena mountain, jump and fall”.

Senator Sani strongly criticized the governor and his recent comment.

“But in a serious sense, it is an irresponsible statement to have called on people who voted us into power to climb such a hill, fall and to die. My advice to all the opposition forces in Kaduna state is that we should turn Kufena hills into our meeting place to demand for good governance, accountability and government without arrogance.

“The positive aspect of the governor’s proclamation on the Kufena Mountain is that he has put it on a national discourse and it has become a tourist attraction for people who want to see where the opposition are supposed to go climb, fall and die,” the senator said.

He also added that Amaechi may be removed as Minister.

During the meeting, Sani also spoke about the alleged marginalization of the people of Southern Kaduna and the future of the region.

The senator called on the youth of Southern Kaduna to mount pressure on the state government and continue to irritate the ears of the federal government at the national level on development of the region.

“What happened in the past is likely to happen under this government, so the people of Southern Kaduna must continue to challenge the government of the state to demand equal opportunity and equal representation and you must neither allow yourself to continue to play the second fiddle nor should you rest on bronze medal, you must be respected and the only way to get your respect is to continue to challenge the establishment and political order in the state,” he said.

On the other hand, El Rufai claimed that he was misrepresented on comments he made during the Town Hall meeting with stakeholders.

The governor said that did not ask anyone to die over appointments, adding that he was only making it known that those who were fine with his appointments could climb the Kufena Hills and jump.

Culture / Adeyeye-Ogunwusi, Ooni Of Ife To Face EFCC by olawalemicheal: 3:04pm On Nov 03, 2015
Group seeks Ooni-elect’s prosecution by EFCC

A human rights group known as the Centre for Human Eights and Social Justice has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to prosecute the Ooni-elect, Prince Adeyeye Ogunwusi, based on the allegations of forgery.

The Chairman of CHRSJ, Mr. Adeniyi Sulaiman, who said this in a letter written to the Chairman of the EFCC said the allegations were weighty and they ought to be thoroughly investigated.

A copy of the letter which was given to President Muhammadu Buhari was made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday.
Sulaiman said the allegation of forgery, fraudulent conversion and obtaining of N400 million against Ogunwusi and his company should not be swept under the carpet.

The group threatened to get court injunction to compel the EFCC to prosecute Ogunwusi if the commission failed to begin the prosecution after seven days of receipt of the letter.

The letter read, ” We wish to refer the Honourable Chairman to the contents of a weighty petition involving various acts of criminality namely forgery, fraudulent conversion and obtaining the sum of N400m by false presence levied against the above named person.

“We also refer the chairman to the EFCC’s letter dated 17th September 2015 to Principal Parter, Olawoyin (Legal Practitioners) and a letter dated 23rd September 2015 from Olawoyin & Olawoyin (Legal Practitioners) to EFCC on the same subject matter.

“In view of the foregoing. We hereby request your commission to prosecute immediately upon the receipt of this letter.”
The group said the anti-graft agency would have prosecuted the person named if he was a commoner.

He said the selective prosecution of alleged offenders would not move the nation forward, saying those with means would always believe they could get away with any crime.

Politics / Senator Shehu Sani – Why Amaechi Might Be Dropped As Minister by olawalemicheal: 2:47pm On Nov 03, 2015
Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) during a get-well-soon visit to a veteran journalist and columnist, Abdulkareem Albashir listed the condition according to which President Muhammadu Buhari may remove Rotimi Amaechi, ex-governor of Rivers state, as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In his statement, he stated that Amaechi will stop to be a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria if found guilty by any capable court of corruption.

Senator Sani said: “The APC position on corrupt allegation is that it is still an allegation and the issue is still in court which the senate committee should not have entertained in the first place. In the general sense, we are duty bound to protect the interest of someone in our party and the opposition has the right to object to whoever is presented.

“In the broader sense, Nigerians and posterity will judge whether our approval of Amaechi was a tacit endorsement of corruption because the issues raised were not enough to stop his confirmation. But we must also understand that even if you are made a minister and you get convicted, the law will take its course. Certainly if he is found guilty, he would not continue to serve as minister under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.”

FFK Tweet

Amaechi is one of the most controversial ministers in the cabinet of President Buhari. The screening of the ex-governor has been postponed several times by the Senate. During his confirmation the senators from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party staged walkout protest.

Amaechi has been accused to have looted the state treasury of billions from 2007 to 2015 when he was a governor.

Sports / 5 Reasons To Be Excited About UEFA Champions League This Week by olawalemicheal: 4:52pm On Oct 20, 2015
Europe’s elite club football competition continues today with various teams seeking to solidify or improve on their current positions in their groups. We take a look five reasons to be excited with the round of games happening this week.

The hottest Striker at the moment comes to England.

The League of super-human strikers just got a new member in the person of Lewandowski. The Polish striker who recently smashed records with a blistering 5 goals in 12 minutes travels with Bayern Munich to the Emirate stadium.

Bayern Munich have transferred their superb league form to the Champions league with six points and eight goals in their first two games – without conceding. Unlike their German opponent Arsenal have been having a torrid time at the Champions League this season. Shock losses away to Dinamo Zagreb and home to Olympiacos has left Wenger and his boys bamboozled to say the least and now face an uphill task to reaching the next stage.

With Alexis Sanchez and Walcott offering the promise of pace and power upfront for the Arsenal and the immense brilliance of coach Guardiola’s Bayern side, this fixture promises to be an enchanting one.

Alexis Sanchez vs Lewandowski

Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The game between the Spanish giants and French Champions is arguably the hottest match to look out for this week. Major talking point of this fixture is the immense talent and records shared between Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Both have impeccable scoring records and are all time leading goal scorers of their various teams. Both are confident in their abilities and believe they are the best in the world game. They also share recent history in the qualification for the just concluded World Cup with a playoff game held between Portugal and Sweden. Portugal emerged victorious in the fixture thanks to a hat trick from Ronaldo. Ibrahimovic’s brace was not enough to see them through.

Zlatan vs. Cristiano

Other players to look out for in this fixture are former Madrid star Angel Di Maria, the Argentine has been enjoying life in Paris and will be starting against his old teammates for the first time since leaving the Spanish Capital two seasons ago.

No Aguero? Super Sterling to the rescue

In form Raheem Sterling and his Manchester City team faces Sevilla at the Etihad. Without the injured Aguero Manchester City crushed Bournemouth at the weekend with Sterling netting a hat-trick and Bony getting a brace. Raheem Sterling’s impact on the team had been questioned since the start of the season but the 20 year old silenced his critics with his hat-trick display.

Raheem Sterling

Another City star to look out for is record signing Kevin De Bruyne who has adapted seamlessly to life in Manchester having contributed to six goals (two goals, four assists) in just six appearances. Manchester City have injury woes in Aguero, Silva, Kolarov, Nasri, Diouf and Clichy and are up against a very determined Sevilla side who will be looking forward to cause an upset.

The question is, will Sterling and De Bruyne inspire Manchester City to a resounding Champions League victory over Sevilla or will Manchester City’s woeful run at the competition continue?

Morata is the new Tevez in Juventus

Last season’s finalist Juventus may be having a bad run in the Serie A this season but their Champions League form remains brilliant. The Old Lady of Turin have gotten maximum points after two games with Morata being pivotal in both victories. Last season saw Argentine Tevez spearheading the Juventus front line where together with midfield powerhouses Pogba and Pirlo they reached the final but lost to Barcelona.

Alvaro Morata

Juventus line up against Borussia mogendablach in the third match day of the Champions League and with victories over Sevilla and Manchester City already are favorites to win this fixture.

3 points for everyone: A short tale of Group B

Group B in the Champions League is made up of Manchester United, Wolfsburg, PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moscow and here’s the interesting part…

All teams are currently on three points.

Group B: PSV, CSKA Moscow, Man Utd, Wolfsburg

With a win and loss to each time after two games, group B teams would be looking to top the group by winning their games this week. Manchester United’s Memphis Depay will hope he is given a chance to make a statement on the field of play after sitting out last week’s League victory. The Red Devils square up against CSKA Moscow which has Seydou Doumbia and Ahmed Musa in their ranks, the duo have a total of 11 goals between them so far in the Champions League inclusive of qualifiers.

In what some have speculated to be a match of eventual second place winners in the group, PSV Eindhoven play Wolfsburg on Wednesday

Politics / Bukola Saraki Reacts To Tinubu’s Statement by olawalemicheal: 1:58pm On Oct 12, 2015
Senate President Bukola Saraki has reacted the statement released by APC National leader Bola Tinubu. Saraki said that he has had no communication with Bola Tinubu ever since he was elected as the Senate President of Nigeria.

The sun newspaper had earlier published a story saying that Tinubu was placed under security watch list by President Buhari because he was working with Bukola Saraki to frustrate the ministerial nominees list and Buhari’s administration in general.

FULL TEXT OF STATEMENT BELOW

I saw the statement said to be issued by Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu over a story published by The Sun newspapers.

I have decided not to join issues with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, I know that most Nigerians are aware that there has been no meeting or communication between me and Asiwaju Tinubu since I was elected Senate President. Therefore, I do not see any basis for a newspaper to report that we are both plotting to oppose the President.

I recognize Tinubu as one of the leaders of the APC who contributed so much to the victory of the party in the last election. Some other people also contributed and I believe the collective efforts made it possible for the first time in the history of our party for an opposition party to win the general elections, Let me state clearly that I remain a committed member of the APC and will do all in my power to ensure the party fulfill its promises to bring positive changes into the country.

Since my election as Senate President, my focus and efforts have been devoted to doing the job that I was elected to do by my constituents and my colleagues in the Senate. Twice, my colleagues have confirmed their support for me as the primus inter pares in the Senate. As I said in my speech when we resumed from our recess late September and in Ikenne yesterday, the screening of ministerial nominees will be handled by me and my colleagues with all sense of responsibility and in adherence to the provision of the constitution. We will be fair to all and be guided by the interest of Nigeria.

The screening will be devoid of sentiment and it is not an opportunity for anybody to settle scores. We are equally eager for us to make a positive difference in our polity and Nigerians will be able to judge us whether we acted in their best interest or not.

Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki

President of the Senate
Federal Republic of Nigeria

Sports / Enyeama Vs Oliseh: Coach Oliseh Tells Side Of Story by olawalemicheal: 3:03pm On Oct 09, 2015
Super Eagles Coach Sunday Oliseh has come out to tell his side of the story in the crisis between him and Vincent Enyeama, that led to the now ex-international retiring from international football.

In an interview posted on the YouTube channel of the Super Eagles, the coach talked about positives gained from the loss against DR Congo and what happened in the much publicized row with Vincent Enyeama.

Coach Oliseh expressed his disappointment at what he termed “character assassination” from the former goal keeper and captain.“I’m very hurt and very disappointed at the character assassination that Vincent Enyeama has taken on my personality as regards this issue”. He also debunked rumors that he had called the security on Vincent Enyeama.

The coach highlighted that there had been a minor row between him and the player but everything had been peacefully settled with intervention from key members of the team. According to him, the next morning Vincent Enyeama had had breakfast with the team and they were about to go for training when he (Oliseh) heard about the news from the media.

Sunday Oliseh also revealed how he had traveled to Lille to visit the then captain and share his plans just after he was made coach of the Super Eagles. His decision to pick Ahmed Musa as captain was because Vincent Enyeama had voiced his desire to retire soon from football soon.“I took him to lunch and shared my coaching philosophy with him. He was talking about retirement from the national team), which I didn’t like.”

On the loss to DR Congo, the coach cited that there are many positives to pick from the game. He hoped the absences due to non-issuance of travelling visas to some players would be solved before the next game. The Super Eagles lost 0-2 to Dr Congo in a game played in Belgium on Thursday and will play their next game against Cameroon on Sunday, October 11th, 2015 by 8pm.

Politics / Omereji Commission: N53bn Diverted By Amaechi’s Administration In Rivers by olawalemicheal: 10:12am On Oct 09, 2015
Governor Nyesom Wike’s Commission of Inquiry on the Sale of Valued Assets, has submitted its report, claiming that N53 billion belonging to the state was allegedly diverted by the previous administration.

In a swift reaction, however, the media office of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, said the purported “missing” N53 billion, was unfortunate and left much to be desired, describing the report as a last ditch trump card “in the hope that it will diminish the former governor’s towering stature as a statesman and honest Nigerian.”
Head of the commission of inquiry, Justice George Omereji, while submitting the report, said the commission received 27 memos and 142 exhibits, while 25 witnesses testified before it.

He called on the state government to act fast on the report, saying: “We hope that the government should act fast and by the time the government looks into this report and acts fast, it will be able to recover billions that are still stashed where they kept them. That money belongs to Rivers people and I hope that the government should act fast and recover the funds so that we can use it for the people of Rivers State.”

Receiving the report, Governor Wike assured that the report would be implemented and that it would not be like other reports of commissions that were not acted upon by previous administrations.

He said: “This will not be like other report. We will make sure that we swing into action immediately to see that the recommendations made by the commission are implemented. We will not be intimidated by anybody or group of persons. Many things have been done to discredit the commission. But for me, it is when your hands are not clean that you begin to use the media to discredit people’s work.”

Speaking with newsmen after the submission, Justice Omereji claimed that N53 billion belonging to the state was allegedly diverted by the previous administration.

He said among other things, the commission recommended that those behind the alleged missing funds should be made to refund them.

He said: “On the billions of naira said to have been stashed away in some places, there was the sum of N55 billion in the State Reserve Fund. Between 2014 and May 2015, they were able to remove N53 billion and we found out that the N53 billion was not used for the projects in the state.

“The money went to individuals. From the papers submitted to us, we also found out that the money was given to people they like. We went to the site of the Justice Karibi Whyte Hospital, we did not see anything at all.”

However, a statement from Amaechi’s Media Office, read in part: “The mischief is all the more evident as the funds referred to are funds from the Rivers State reserve fund which was duly approved by the Rivers State House of Assembly and whose expenditure were duly captured and accounted for. Ordinarily, we might not have responded to the mischief of Mr. Wike knowing that having failed with his various desperate tactics to stop Amaechi’s nomination as a minister, he has embarked on this last ditch effort which is his trump card in the hope that it will diminish the former governor’s towering stature as a statesman and an honest Nigerian.

“However, in keeping with Governor Amaechi’s ethos of transparent and accountable leadership, we will again repeat the facts of the matter. Between 2013 and early 2015, revenue accruing to the government of Rivers State was cut in half due to dwindling federal allocation to states. From about an average of N20 billion, the state began to receive between N9 billion and N10 billion. By the middle of the first quarter of 2015 the state revenue dipped to as low as N6 billion. Salaries alone stood at over N9 billion besides other expenses. Government has set aside a reserve fund as a rainy day fund and had need to fall back to it to fund salaries and projects. The details of the expenditure were clearly captured and this information which was already in the public domain was shared with the incoming administration and the Omereji panel.”

Politics / Prof Osinbajo – Nigerians Should Expect Higher Electricity Tarrifs by olawalemicheal: 9:54am On Oct 09, 2015
Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Vice President of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo, who was representing President Muhammadu Buhari as the special guest of honour said that until there is stability in the power sector, electricity tariffs cannot remain at the levels they are currently.

Prof Osinbajo said “Power is of course crucial and as the president said in his inaugural address, to which President Mbeki referred, the question of power is one that is absolutely crucial to manufacturing and practically everything else and we shouldn’t be rejoicing at 4000 Megawatts of power. But the problems are historical and several of those problems will need tackling head on, on a day-by-day basis.

“One aspect of the problem that I want to speak about, because this also affects manufacturing, is the whole idea of the tariffs. Of course the president of MAN just said that we have one of the most expensive electricity in the world.

“Now, the truth of the matter is that at this point, if we wanted to have a cost effective tariff, the only way is to service that core value chain, the only way is to ensure that we are paying and compensating the value chain -from generation down to distribution- a cost effective tariff.

You cannot have that cost effective tariff without some pay. At the moment, (when you compare) how much it costs to produce power, and the amount of power that is generated, the losses on account of distribution are significant. In some cases you have up to 40% losses in distribution, and of course it is the DisCos that have to take that burden.

“The GenCos (generating companies) are producing power but they expect to be paid for all the power that they produce. Now, if 40% of this is lost, it means the DisCos cannot collect 40%, but they have to pay for it somehow. So government has to come in and play some kind of role in order to ensure that the whole value chain is paid for.

“But the most important thing is that the cost of power is reflective of costs that have to be borrowed at every stage of the value chain and today the cost of power, if it’s going to be reflective in any way is simply what it is. It will be very difficult indeed, except if we are going introduce yet another subsidy and by the way, a fair amount of that goes on already in the way that government supports the GenCos and the DisCos.

“But I think that we must be ready to accept that for a while, until things stabilize somewhat, tariffs cannot remain at the levels at which they are today, they cannot remain at that level, and that just simply is the truth of the matter.

“It certainly means that there may be higher costs, but I don’t think that an option of not having power is really what we want. The real issue of course is that at the end of the day, some of the cost goes to the consumer, but a cost reflective tariff is an absolute necessity, otherwise, privatization and all of that simply doesn’t make sense.”

Politics / Abuja Bombings And The Hypocrisy Of APC Supporters By Osaigbovo John by olawalemicheal: 12:39pm On Oct 05, 2015
On Friday 2nd of December, three bombs went off at close intervals in Kuje and Nyanya district of the Abuja metropolis. With deaths running above a dozen people and injured persons clocking twice the figure the obvious truth is Boko haram are not going down without a fight. My deepest condolences goes out to all those affected by this tragedy.

As with every news like this, Nigeria’s Twitter space was flooded with Nigerians who took to their devices to air their opinions about the sad incident. In the midst of it all what however struck me (and quite oddly too) was the hypocrisy of APC supporters.

In the previous administration and the run up to the elections, we were made to believe that ex-president Goodluck Jonathan was a weakling and lacked ideas to stop Boko Haram. Terms like ‘clueless’ became popular among APC stalwarts who ridiculed the ex-president’s effort to seek support from neighboring countries to fight terrorism. It was so pitiful that terrorism was used as a political tool to convince Nigerians of the ‘Change’ agenda of the APC. This ‘change’ agenda presented a facade of being able to curb Boko Haram in the first 3 months in office – a manifesto that with last Friday’s bombings we now know was not possible.

Calls for support for the Nigerian Army and unity of purpose in fighting terrorism was shouted down as this APC political commentators even went as low as suggesting that the presidency then was financing Boko Haram.

Fast forward to May 29th and Buhari was inaugurated into office, the APC has finally and commendably won elections from a rival party. The praise singers rolled out their drums; they sang like canaries with the break of every sunlight and praised the ‘New Sheriff in town’ for his ideas and political intelligence. President Buhari visited neighboring countries to ask for a joint force in fighting Boko Haram and was praised by the same people who insulted the ex-president for the same action. The new sheriff in town took a tour of various countries making a barrage of controversial comments at speeches and interviews and these same praise singers saw absolutely nothing wrong but cheered on like new cheerleaders witnessing their first big basketball game.

President Buhari ran the country for more than three months without ministers only to release an incomplete ‘list of noisemakers’ on 30th of September which as I write is yet to be screened by our dramatic senators. What did APC commentators say in all this? ‘Give the man time’; ‘he knows what he is doing’. Only a very few called out the presidency when he glaringly erred.

After the bombs went off last Friday, there was general silence from the presidency. This continued for hours and Special Adviser to the President of media Femi Adesina trended on twitter or posting pictures of President Buhari on Facebook after a bomb blast. Over twelve hours later and the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu releases a half-baked statement saying ‘President Buhari is distressed’ with the mishap and has sent a delegation to the affected sites.

Imagine if this was done during ex-president Jonathan’s time…

Someone once said that in the game of politics it is easier to cast aspersions and attack the sitting government until you get into power and see how it feels.

It is my firm belief that as a nation we need more nationalists not supporters of parties. We need more people who can reason without their judgment being clouded by political affiliations but driven by the love of the country. People who are dedicated to service to man and country not those who are ready to sing anything the piper plays. In a country of over 170 million people, is this too much to ask?

For the many blind supporters of the APC my question is, how long can you keep up with the hypocrisy?
Here’s a clear example of the Hypocrisy of APC Supporters.

If you are a frequent reader of political opinions expressed on Nigerian Twitter then you have most likely come across a certain @OgbeniDipo who happens to be a well known APC Supporter.

Ogbeni was part of the critics of Goodluck Jonathan’s administration especially in areas involving his handling of islamist sect, Boko Haram.

In 2014, Ogbeni tweeted this following the Nyanya bomb blast (tweet below)
Fast forward to 2015, Now under the regime of Muhammadu Buhari, another Bomb blast in the same location and here is what Ogbeni tweeted (tweet below)

Nigerians on twitter who noticed this immediately attacked him for his bias opinions and then he later tweeted the following…

Science/Technology / Apple’s Electric Car Set For 2019 Release by olawalemicheal: 10:49am On Sep 22, 2015
Apple has designated building an electric car as a “committed project” and has set a target shipping date for 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The project has been code-named Titan and its leaders have been given permission to triple the 600-person team, the WSJ said, citing people familiar with the matter.

For Apple, a “ship date” doesn’t necessarily mean the date that customers receive a new product; it can also mean the date that engineers sign off on the product’s main features, the WSJ said.

Apple spent more than a year investigating the feasibility of an Apple-branded car, including meeting with two groups of government officials in California, according to the Journal.

Sources told Reuters in August that Apple was developing a car and studying self-driving technology, but it was unclear if the iPhone maker was designing a vehicle that could drive itself.

Apple was not immediately available for comment. The Cupertino, California-based company doesn’t currently plan to make its first electric vehicle fully autonomous, WSJ said on Monday.

Apple has been consistently hiring car experts as part of its effort to build a team in automated driving.

Apple has hired this year Megan McClain, a former Volkswagen AG engineer with expertise in automated driving, and Vinay Palakkode, a graduate researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, a hub of automated driving research.

Apple also hired a senior engineer from electric car maker Tesla Motors Inc, according to a LinkedIn posting. Apple’s shares were up 1.3 percent at $114.98 on the Nasdaq.

Politics / 90 Days In Office: Buhari’s Appointments So Far by olawalemicheal: 2:16pm On Aug 28, 2015
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Chief of Staff, SGF, and others, Nigerians have been very unhappy stating that a vast majority of the appointments have come from the Northern part of Nigeria.

President Buhari came under fire in July when he made a somewhat controversial statement during his visit to the United States. Buhari while giving a speech had mentioned that he would naturally want to do more for the 95% of people who voted for him from the Northern and Western region, than for the 5% who voted for him from the South and East. He however said that because the constitution wouldn’t allow that, he would treat everyone equally.

That does not seem to be the case since most of his appointments have been from the Northern and Western region. Nigerians are now very bitter over this and have expressed their dissatisfaction over the place of tribalism in Buhari’s appointments.

A comprehensive list of Buhari’s appointments so far;
