Politics / Anayaoku, Soludo List Factors Stalling Nation’s Devt by oneeast: 1:59pm On May 04, 2012
Former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Thursday took a deep took at Nigeria and its problems and came up with the verdict that the country is bedeviled by the twin vices of corruption and erosion of the people’s traditional values which have stunted her growth as a nation.

While Soludo noted that creation of additional states outside the four regional structure of the First Republic, the attendant post civil war oil boom and subsequent sharing of revenue from the federation account had rendered some states docile, Anyaoku bemoaned the level of corruption in Nigeria and said that right now the entire nation is being treated to the mind boggling details coming out from the fuel subsidy probe and the police pension scan.
Both Soludo and Anyaoku spoke at the 2012 Annual Faculty conference of the faculty of Arts Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.

Soludo, who spoke as the guest speaker at the occasion on the theme: “Nigeria: Towards the Creation of Incentives and Structures for Good Gover-nance”, said unless there was a new design in the system, the redesign of the 1999 Constitution and return to six regions which existed before the civil war, the country may not get it right in its quest for good governance.

On his part, Anyaoku said: “Misappropriation of public funds used to be described in millions, now it is reported in billions and even trillions. Corruption has so seriously eaten deep into the fabric of our society that it has virtually swallowed up our collective values. There is hardly any sector of our national life that has been spared this affliction, including even the family that was until recently, the last line of defence and hope.”

“We read in newspapers that some parents acquiesce in, and often support examination malpractices by their children or wards; and this is not to talk about many of our communities that approbate and festoon very rich individuals, including public servants, with dubious sources of enrichment.

“In addition to reinvigorating the work of the anti-corruption agencies like ICPC and the EFCC, and ensuring that those involved in corruption are seen to be punished, the attack on corruption in Nigeria must begin in the education sector.
“We must return to basics by remodeling our school schools’ curricula and encouraging our teachers to teach civics and the virtues of service to the community and country, in our primary and secondary schools.

“For it is only at this level of education that appropriate values can be effectively inculcated in the young thereby inuring them against inclination to corruption in later life”, Anyaoku who chaired the occasion said.

Other personalities who attended the ceremony included the Anambra state Governor, Mr. Peter Obi who was represented by Prof. Stella Okunna, and National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh among others.

Crime / Yoruba Monarch Faces More Trouble Over R.a.p.i.n.g of corp member by oneeast: 1:37pm On May 04, 2012
Osun State Government has threatened to institute a suit against the Alowa of Ilowa in Obokun Local Government Area, Oba Adebukola Alli, who is standing trial before a state High Court for allegedly mobilizing people to draw support for him during the hearing of his case on Wednesday.

The monarch is standing trial over alleged rape of Miss Helen Okpara, an ex-corps member who served in his domain between 2010 and 2011.
Oba Alli who had since last year been standing trial over allegation of rape was alleged to have mobilized his subjects, many of who were school children to the court during the continuation of hearing on his case.

The monarch was said to have facilitated and sponsored the protesters who almost disrupted the court hearing with their protests within the court premise.
However, the state Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Bashir Ajibola, said the state government had concluded arrangements to sue Oba Alli, stressing that the action of the traditional ruler was against the laws of the land.

He noted that the monarch had through his action tampered with the peace of the state, adding that the school children used for the protest were supposed to be in their various schools in Ilowa when they staged the protest in Osogbo.

He disclosed that the state government had no interest in the case of alleged cape of the 23-year-old ex corps member levelled against the monarch as being speculated by some subjects of the traditional ruler. The commissioner said the government would not hesitate to prevent further occurrence of such protest in the premises of the court.

Justice Oyejide Falola on Wednesday adjourned the case till May 21, 2012.

Education / JAMB Candidates’ Most Preferred Universities In Nigeria by oneeast: 9:08am On May 02, 2012
On universities mostly preferred by candidates, Ojerinde said that 11 institutions stood out with the University of Lagos topping the list 83, 865 candidates followed closely by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka with 82,148 while the University of Benin came third with 80,048 candidates.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, he also said was the fourth preferred institution with 79, 398, followed by the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN with 76,276.

The sixth most preferred university was the Obafemi Awolowo University,; OAU, Ile-Ife with 64,702 followed by the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, with 56,708.

Also the ABU was followed by the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, with 48,439 candidates; University of Uyo, -44,397; Imo state University, -43,353 and University of Ibadan, UI with 40,011.

JAMB chief said, “Our experience this time is consistent with the previous trends- that Nigerians have a higher preference for some universities ahead of other tertiary institutions.
”Unfortunately those universities still have constraints with 83,865 candidates recorded being the highest applications (less than last year’s) 99, 115 (for the best preferred).

’’ However, from the carrying capacity figure, the National Universities Commission, NUC can admit only 9,507. These figure are only for most preferred choice and do not include those who chose UNILAG as their second choice”

I see every northerner even IBB, Atiku, Sambo, Sanusi, Buhari as terrorists who could go for a suicide bombing anytime they are called upon to do so. It doesn't matter how much a moslem has in his bank account, he or she can do anything for the sake of 72 promised virgins in the name of lslamic jihad.

Even IBB, Buhari and Atiku is looking forward to having these virgins around them.

The case Abdmuttallab is still staring everybody in the face. If I were to advice GEJ, he should stay very from Sambo, cause Islamic occultic north could use Sambo as a suicide bomber just to get rid of GEJ. I will not extend this warning again.

I think north should be more concerned with poor state of security caused by moslems and unbearable poverty in their region instead of venturing into power once more. After ruling Nigeria for over 38years they still do not have anything to show for it, instead they became poorer than any region in Africa. The abokis like IBB, Atiku, Ciroma and Buhari should hide their faces in shame for bringing this burden to their norther people.

Politics / Jonathan’s 2015 Ambition Can Break Up Nigeria – Northern Leaders by oneeast: 12:13pm On Apr 21, 2012
As the debate on the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2015 presidential election continues to heat up the polity, two northern leaders have warned that the crisis the re-election bid will cause is capable of breaking up the country. As a result, they want President Jonathan to apply caution and remain committed to his publicly declared campaign promise not to contest the next election in his interest and that of the nation.

Outspoken former governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawal Kaita and controversial National Vice Chairman of the pro-North socio-political organization, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, Senator Joseph Kennedy Waku, who gave the words of caution, spoke against the backdrop of recent actions and comments credited to the president, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and some South-South leaders.

Both President Jonathan and the PDP had, in two separate affidavits filed at a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja earlier this week argued that Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2015 presidential election based on provisions of the 1999 constitution. Their position was in response to a suit filed by a chieftain of the PDP, Cyriacus Njoku, who is seeking an order of the court to stop President Jonathan from contesting the 2015 presidential election on the grounds that he can’t take the oath of office three times, since he “first took an oath of office as substantive president on May 6, 2010 and took a second oath as President on May 29, 2011.”
The party and the president’s position is coming on the heels of recent comments by two of his prominent kinsmen; first republic information minister, Chief Edwin Clark and leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, stating that President Jonathan must be allowed to remain in office beyond 2015.

Northern leaders, who believe these actions and comments are too suggestive to be ignored, have therefore, been shooting from all angles. Expressing his displeasure over the suspected ambition of President Jonathan, 79-year-old former governor of Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita warned the president not to venture into the 2015 race.

“All I want to say is: I will advise him (Jonathan) not to contest,” he declared, in a brief interview.
On his part, Senator Waku, who called from his base in Washington DC, USA, to add his voice to the raging debate, warned: “President Jonathan should not even contemplate making any move to contest the 2015 election because such will be dishonourable, immoral, satanic and catastrophic.”
He added: “Those who are close to the president, if they like him at all, should warn him not to do things that can break up this country and put him on the sad notes of history. Instead of running campaign errands for him now, they should urge him to tackle daunting challenges facing the nation, such as insecurity, high unemployment, poor power supply and lack of food for the masses. These are the things he owes millions of our people whose votes were either given to him or stolen during the last election.”

Politics / How Anambra Univeristy Students Conquered The World In UK by oneeast: 6:49am On Apr 17, 2012
The engineering students of Anambra State University (ANSU), under the aegis of Nuta_Bolts Team, recently ruled the world when it beat 123 teams from across the globe to emerge winner of the 2011 Global Population Challenge Competition.

The team led by young and unassuming Ifeanyichukwu Onyenanu and ably assisted by Nwachukwu Anagu will be in England this July for the Formula Students Competition, to partake in the Silverstone Circuit race car competition. The team, Daily Sun gathered, will also be in Rio, Brazil in June at the United Nations (UN) Rio+20 Earth Summit to present their solution on the Global Population Challenge to the world body.
But the silence that shrouds the achievements of the young lads has began to irritate some people in the university community who feel that had it been some other university in the country that attained the great height, they would have been celebrated by the country and the state.

This nonchalant attitude shown by those that should have brought the team to public reckoning, including the Anambra State Government, has found expression in the inability of the students to make the Formula Students Competition, last year, owing to late arrival of their visas, occasioned by paucity of funds with which to procure them.
The Team leader, Ifeanyichukwu, and his assistant, Nwachukwu, who said they were determined to make Nigeria proud again, shared with Daily Sun the story of how they conquered the world in the UK competition. Excerpts:

Global Population Challenge Competition
The Institute of Mechanical Engineers brought up a topic in one of their conferences held at their Grand conference room at the institutions headquarters which was tagged “One planet, too many people” and the roles engineers will play in such event. The issues raised there brought about the population challenge competition, which was declared open in April 2011.
Because we partook in the Formula Students’ Competition 2011 which was still on as at last April, the Nuta_Bolts team was invited to register for the population competition.

The competition highlighted four key areas: food, water, energy and urbanization. We chose food as the most important thing to Nigerians, with a view of our population increase in 2050. For this we were asked to present some engineering solutions to the problems that will affect food sustainability in the country Nigeria.
Our team alongside nine other teams from Nigeria registered for the competition, but on the whole 123 teams from across the world registered and participated in the competition. Our team successfully ran through the first round, semi-final and the finals which was held at the Grand Committee Room of the House of Parliament, West Minster, London.

The said finals took place on Tuesday November 22, 2011 and we were the second team to make presentation. Four members of parliament (MPs) Bob Smith, Andrew Mitchell (Secretary of State for International Development) and Rogger Williams, were present and witnessed the competition, while another two, Chris White and Mark Spencer joined us, the winning team for dinner, at the Institution’s headquarters at 1 Bird Cage Walk, West Minster London.
It was a 10-minutes presentation and five minutes questions-and-answers session which were on our proffered solution. At the end of the entire presentations, the panel of five judges declared us, Nuta_Bolts team winner of the Global Population Challenge Competition.
With this prize we will be attending the United Nations (UN) Rio+20 Earth Summit by June this year in Brazil to present our solution to the world body.
Why we chose food

We found out that Nigeria has not witnessed a major crisis apart from that caused by the Civil War and that of 1972 when there was food scarcity and Gowon’s government stepped in and knitted it in the bud by providing the enabling environment and incentives to farmers. Our report featured provision of agricultural mechanization equipment, reviving and building more fertilizer plants in the six geo-political zones of the country. There is need to provide modern storage facilities, which will reduce food wastage in the country from 65 per cent down to 10 per cent From our research, we found out that Nigeria as of now produces food though not enough but 65 per cent of the production is being wasted due to lack of modern storage facility system and good transportation system to link the food producing areas.

Formula Students Competition
Yes we were unable to attend the Formula Student 2011 competition between July 14 and 17, 2011 because of the delay in securing our visa, which came two days after the end of the competition. However, we are preparing for the 2012 edition as it is an annual event. The 2012 FS competition will be held at Silverstone Circuit, Nottinghamspire UK from July 13 to July 16.

Meanwhile, we are advancing on our car design to come out the best. Some of measures we have adopted are the training of our team members at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford England, where we were trained on the basic design approach of a race engine car. This took place from October 11 to 14, 2011. We also attended the Formula Students Learn-to-win event organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers at the Institution’s headquarters, London. We still have other trainings lined up for members of the team before the competition and our race car will run at Silverstone Circuit this July.
Challenges

Our major challenge is the issue of sponsorship. Like with the case of the 2011 competition, we missed out because of late arrival of visa. But the truth is that we did not get funds on time. Before the university management could source for the money from their meagre resources, it was already too late. We feel that on our part we have made sacrifices, we have put in our best and proved that with adequate assistance and sponsorship, we will make our school, Anambra State and indeed Nigeria proud. The competition we are going into is money-consuming, but it will bring Nigeria to a greater height in terms of technology. Hence it will not be out of point if the Nigerian government took interest in it.
We talk about trainings we will need to undergo before the competition. Some of them are outside the country and we need real good money but it is not what our university management can shoulder alone.

Why not get it right instead of fooling your dirty self on NL. I think I need to call on Freecocoa to come and murder you as usual.

Maybe the below will get you to your feet to understand that Innoson is more than a mere manufacturing plant which is being sought abroad.

"If recent developments at Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited (IVM) are enough foretaste of what the future holds for the Nnewi-based auto plant, then it is well on the way to becoming the corporate version of the biblical prophet that is respected more abroad than at home.

Though production is yet to gather full momentum, the plant and the vehicles that have so far rolled off the production lines have been attracting attention from the ECOWAS sub-regional markets, particular Ghana which last week sent a top-level delegation to Nnewi, to discuss business with the management of Innoson."

Have 1 international airport in the important State like Anambra, then the money for the remaining 2 could be used to build a very effective transport system (whichever train, bus, tram etc). the remaining change could even be used to support local industries and universities to be able to provide the necessary working professionals a healthy nation would need.
