Travel / Re: Why Do Nigerians Abroad Always Conveniently Refer To Nigeria As "that Country" by onyeigbo(m): 7:39am On Jul 10, 2007
I"ve noticed that too and I feel sorry for Nigerians that refer to our homeland as "that country" and go ahead and criticise naija like it's the worst place on earth,it's a case of inferiority complex.
I may not be happy with the state of Nigeria but it is my home and will never be "that country "to me
I may have used the term myself on rare ocassions but I know it's not right.

I think the problem is that Nigerians who emigrate to the US and after being here for a while adopt the ideologies and mindsets of the typical american.mention the word "AFRICA" to an american in the street and the person will respond as if "AFRICA" is a "COUNTRY" that is located somewhere very, very far from the US and the people who live there are savages, primitive and under-developed.some Nigerians for one reason or the other are quick to echo those same sentiments and even start refering to their own homeland in the same manner.some africans/nigerians even go as far as describing africa more negatively than the american media giving people the impression that the way africa is portrayed on tv by the american media is based on facts/reality.granted that nigeria has a lot of problems that still persist and hinder progress and development, but some nigerians are quick to magnify the problems to a certain extent painting the whole country with one brush stroke.i believe that nigeria possesses a lot of potential if only we(nigerians) would care enough and start contributing towards achieving economic greatness and developing that potential that has been ignored by incompetent and inefficient "LEADERS".I don't intend to jump on the bandwagon and consider nigeria a write-off just yet. grin

It makes me so sick that I don't even want to watch any thing the have to show about Africa. do you ever see the stupid shows the have on Discovery channel, National geographic channel or the Travel channel about Africa,, Omg for any one that's never been to Africa, you would think it's notthing but jungel, AIDS, or poverty. The way Africa is portrayed in the US is no different from the way black americans are portrayed in the media.the media magnifies the negatives and paints everything with one brush as if it's reality.funny thing is and this is something i've noticed.most americans swallow it hook, line and sinker like a bunch of dummies.there is no effort made to verify or at least investigate on their own.they let the media do their thinking for them.whenever i see shows like the ones on the Discovery channel,National Geographic, the Travel channel, all i do is laugh and change the channel because as an african,i know better. i can at least say that most of the stuff they are putting out there is a bunch of rubbish that is just meant to smear and create a negative impression of Africa.blacks/africans have been hated and oppressed for centuries,so in essence i don't expect things to change overnight!!

I find it quite amazing that, even though the US has a very diverse population, the level of ignorance on anything outside the US is staggering, even among educated Americans.

No wonder US foreign policy is so messed up. The media in the US chooses to portray africa as backward, regressive, primitive and full of savages because that's what they want the average american to think.the media could focus on the positives and magnify that but instead all you see and hear are the negatives which gives people the impression that africa is a God-forsaken continent.the funny thing is most americans are not smart enough to investigate on their own and learn more about africa besides what they've been told by the biased media.some even think that "AFRICA" is a country!!! even so-called educated americans hold the same view and act like it's the truth.i've been here long enough to know most people in this country are very gullible and stupid when it comes to basic knowledge of the outside world.in this day and age, when any kind of information you want is available on the internet and can be accesed with a few clicks of your mouse,it's a surprise that some people choose to be influenced by the media.ask yourself how some people in the US with all it's education and 1st world status fall victim to "419" scam letters they recieve in their email.that gives you an idea of the kind of mind-set that exists in the US.i don't condone fraud in any form or manner, but it makes you wonder why the level of ignorance and stupidity is so high!!!
Politics / Re: Oil Discovered In Ghana by onyeigbo(m): 10:39am On Jun 29, 2007
You did not answer my question, and yor post clearly indicates that you have never been to Nigeria. I mean for crying out Loud History supports my Argument, it's not as I making things up here. When Ghana was struggling, didn't thousands of Ghanaians invade Nigeria, didn't the Government remove them in Truck Loads, Have you forgotten where the term Ghana must Go comes from. Even Ghana's Beta "Rawlings" says it. If you know anything about history, you'll know that Nigerians are the first people to jump aboard when the ship is sinking. They'll be in Ghana, Senegal, Europe, North Africa Faster than yo can reply to this Post. It'll be unlike anything the world has ever witnessed. I'd say 95% of Nigerians would attempt to leave, I can't say how many would succeed, but 95% of more 140 Million people attempting to leave a country is disaster. At this present time,we have a substantial percentage of people who want to leave Nigeria to seek greener pastures elsewhere, even in Ghana!!.thousands of Ghanaians may have "INVADED" when things got so bad in their country, but at least there was an improvement and some of them returned.it's easy to assume nigeria has a major advantage over some other west african countries when it comes to natural resources, human population and economic potential.my question to you is,why the major exodus from nigeria and why is it that those who left previously are not returning?.the question you asked me might be better answered if you could ask the majority of nigerians here in the U.S. and the ones back home the same question and wait for their response.i am not denigrating Nigeria in any way,but sometimes the truth hurts.the country has a lot of potential which is being neglected and wasted for no reason whatsoever.in addition,i lived in nigeria for 14yrs. before returning to the U.S. i would like Nigeria to retain it's title as the "GIANT OF AFRICA" but it seems a lot of work has to be done before that can happen.Ghanaians were compelled to leave when economic conditions became unbearable and then later returned when things got better.when will that happen for nigerians in the U.S.?

If Nigeria collapsed today, it would destroy West Africa, so onyeigbo you must know that an unsuccessful Nigeria means an unsuccessful Ghana.

Think about all the millions of people that will leave Nigeria and Turn West Africa into the world's largest Refugee Camp. An usuccessful Nigeria has RESULTED in a succesful Ghana! maybe ghana economically cannot challenge Nigeria just yet,but at least in terms of utilizing resources and brainpower they have at their disposal, ghana would get more of my vote.nigeria as a nation, should be a model of some sort, for other lesser or poorer african nations but for some reason,is more of a caricature and a joke(MY HONEST OPINION!!).Most of us nigerians are quick to place nigeria head and shoulders above every other west african nation when comparisons are being made, but yet nigeria still chooses to "follow" by example instead of leading by example.Ghana currently has almost the same appeal that the United States does for a majority of nigerians.that gives you an idea of how recent events might end up being a major wake-up call for the so-called "GIANT" of africa!!.

If this is real, I'm not sure if this is a good news for Nigeria. Now we have competition from a contender that has been craving to replace Nigeria as the Giant of Africa for many years.
It's on, we really really need to get our sht together immediately or else we will be replaced.

I'm still searching for a confirmation. Honestly speaking,i wish ghana would replace nigeria as the "GIANT" of africa!!.Nigeria had been given title years ago and has failed woefully to live up expectations.it's obvious with this new develoment that Nigeria's "status" is in jeopardy if we choose to dilly-dally and tip-toe around serious issues and problems that we are faced with.i actually wish that more oil will be discovered in Ghana.that should be a wake-up call to nigeria who, recently has been lagging behind Ghana, economically speaking.i am ibo, with nigerian roots,so don't be surprised that i am giving Ghana well deserved support.at least, let's watch and see how this new "discovery" will affect ghana and it's economy.
Car Talk / Re: Manual Drives Vs Automatic Drives In Cars: Which Is Better? by onyeigbo(m): 5:31am On Jun 22, 2007
honestly speaking,i prefer the manual transmission.because of the way it's designed, you are pretty much in control of the car.automatic transmission vehicles are okay to drive and are good for those who are learning to drive for the first time.here in the U.S.,a lot of people, some africans included complain that manual transmission involves a "lot of work" to drive!!! i guess constantly changing gears would be considered "a lot of work"!!! that's why i believe manual transmission sets you apart from the crowd who don't want to be bothered with the "hard work" involved in driving manual transmission.also with manual transmission, you can tell who's an experienced driver and who is'nt.most people choose automatic because there's little guesswork involved.just push the gear stick down to "D" and you are good to go!! a little child can easily do that, that's why it cannot be compared in any way with manual transmission driving.
