Foreign Affairs / Evangelical Pastor ⛪ On Bus Tour Contrasts Trump Quotes With The Bible by orizonfountain(m): 8:22am On Oct 26, 2018
Progressive evangelical pastor Doug Pagitt is touring the nation contrasting Trump campaign slogans against quotes from the Bible.

"You have heard it said, 'America First,' but we are here to be reminded to 'seek first the Kingdom of God,' on behalf of all those everywhere in the world," Pagitt said at one stop, quoting Jesus from the Bible book of Matthew, NPR reports.

Pagitt's organization, Vote Common Good, is urging Christians to vote Democrat in the upcoming midterms.

"You've heard it said that to be a true Christian, you must vote like a Republican," Pagitt told a Texas group, according to NPR. "But we are here to be reminded that just ain't so."

Vote Common Good is informally advised by Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), who is the current vice chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Lieu told NPR that he hopes the group will "help Americans understand that if they want to vote their conscience, there is a place in the Democratic Party for them."
Politics / Trump And Putin Plan Paris Meeting by orizonfountain(m): 8:09am On Oct 24, 2018
US President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin plan to meet in Paris next month, amid a continuing dispute over a key nuclear arms treaty.

The pair will meet at World War One centenary commemorations, US National Security Adviser John Bolton said.

He was in Moscow to convey US plans to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

Russia denies US claims it has breached the treaty and warns that withdrawal is a "dangerous step".
Politics / *nigerian My Finds Missing General’s Vehicle Pond by orizonfountain(m): 9:54pm On Sep 30, 2018
The Nigerian Army has recovered the vehicle of a missing military general inside a pond in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Major General Idris Alkali (Retd) has been missing for weeks and the military authorities have since launched a search for him.

The Commander of the 3 Division of the Nigerian army and leader of the search and rescue mission, Brigadier-General Umar Mohammed, told Channels Television on September 20 that the troops had been deployed to Dura Du.

According to him, following a preliminary investigation, the vehicle of the missing officer was seen close to the pond.

He explained that the military had also received information that some vehicles had been pushed into the pond.

Consequently, Mohammed stated that the Force will do its best to find the missing officer even if it meant draining it (the pond).

“We came here for the past three days seeing if we could salvage anything from the river. But this river, being a mining site is very deep. You can see that we have a crane. At the last resort, we have now decided that we will evacuate the water from the pond so that we can see what is inside,” he said.

The retired general was said to have been travelling from Abuja to Bauchi in a black Corolla vehicle on September 3 before he went missing.
Crime / Lack Of Incubators At Hospital In Northern Region by orizonfountain(m): 9:46pm On Sep 30, 2018
A lack of incubators at a local hospital in the Northern region has left over a dozen babies dead, journalist Joojo Cobbinah described in a gripping report on Joy News Friday.

At the Kpandai Polyclinic, babies who need special care must be trekked over 200 kilometers on poor roads to reach Tamale Teaching Hospital, where they can receive proper medical treatment.

Cobbinah traveled to Kpandai earlier this month where he spoke with Raymond Aboungo, Tamale Teaching Hospital’s medical superintendent. He says a large part of the problem stems from the deplorable conditions of the roads leading into and out of the hospital. "We try to manage in our own way but a lot of these babies must go by public transport," Aboungo told Cobbinah.

Aboungo says he would transport these babies with his own personal vehicle, but because the roads are rocky, he is unable to. He himself rides a bike to work everyday while his car sits at home.

Meanwhile, a resident in Kpandai named Ester said that the journey to Tamale can be cumbersome and dangerous for an ill newborn.

“From here to Tamale is a very long journey. Traveling with the babies who are tiny is difficult,” she said.

According to the report, the ambulance service in the municipality requests GH¢500, which most people simply can’t afford to pay.

On a broader scale, childbirth-related deaths have hit the country hard.
Foreign Affairs / *trump Admin Rule Would Deny Green Cards To Immigrants Who Took Food. by orizonfountain(m): 7:06am On Sep 23, 2018
The Trump administration announced a proposed rule Saturday that would make it harder for immigrants already in the U.S. legally, as well as those seeking to enter, to obtain visas or green cards if they have ever been dependent on certain public benefits, like Medicaid, food stamps or public housing.

The proposal, which can become a rule after a public comment period, rewrites a 1999 rule that limited green cards from immigrants who were dependent on cash benefits, but did not take into consideration healthcare or other non-monetary benefits.

Originally, the rule known as "public charge" began in the 1800s as a way for the U.S. to deny entry to immigrants who were likely to become a drain on the economy.

"This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers," said Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

As NBC News previously reported, earlier versions of the proposal included more draconian measures, such as limiting green cards and citizenship for immigrants who had used Obamacare or certain tax credits.

"The [disqualifying] benefits generally represent the largest federal programs for low-income people by total expenditure that address basic living needs such as income, housing, food, and medical care," a spokeswoman for DHS said in a written briefing.

Religion / JOYCE MEYER: There Is Always A Way! by orizonfountain(m): 9:12pm On Aug 28, 2018
I want you to know there is always a way. It may not be easy; it may not be convenient; it may not come quickly. You may have to go over, under, around, or through. But if you will simply keep on keeping on and refuse to give up, you will find a way.

I want you to make yourself a promise. Promise yourself that you will never again say, “There is no way.” The truth is, even when there seems to be no way, with God there is always a way. If you are a child of God, the Spirit of God lives inside of you. All the creativity in the world resides in Him, and because He lives in you, you have access to all that creativity. The Holy Spirit can give you ideas that never occurred to you and show you ways to do things you never thought you could do. Instead of dwelling on our difficulties, we need to focus more on the fact that God is for us and His power is at work in us. Often, we give up too easily, saying, “This is too hard” or “This is taking too long.” We must stop looking at situations in our lives and thinking, I really cannot handle this; it’s too much for me. I’ve already tried too many times. I have to accept there is just no way it will ever happen. Instead, we need to say, “I don’t care whether there seems to be a way or not.

Sports / *barcelona's Paco Alcacer Joins Dortmund On Loan* by orizonfountain(m): 8:57pm On Aug 28, 2018
Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Paco Alcacer on loan with an option to buy from Barcelona.

Dortmund will pay €2 million up front for the loan and can commit him to a four-year deal if they hand over a further €23m (£20.9m/$27m) at the end of the season, though the Catalan side can reject that offer. With a further €5m in variables, the 24-year-old could end up costing €30m.

Alcacer had his medical at the German club on Tuesday after Liverpool pulled the plug on a prospective move for Divock Origi, and the Spain international is excited to begin his Bundesliga adventure.

Alcacer was unable to secure a regular spot in the Barca first-team since joining from Valencia in 2016. The Spain international played just 17 times in La Liga last term and did not feature for Ernesto Valverde's team in the early stages of this season.

However, he had been a success at Valencia, where he scored 43 goals in 124 games over a six-year spell.
TV/Movies / *game Of Thrones Reveals First Glimpse Of Season 8⃣* by orizonfountain(m): 6:54pm On Aug 27, 2018
The first footage from the final season of Game of Thrones is here — but it’s really, really brief.

HBO revealed a surprise video Sunday night touting the premium cable network’s 2019 lineup. Included in the trailer is footage from both the previous season of GoT and a quick glimpse of the highly anticipated season 8. The new footage buried amid a lot of shots of season 7 — a shot of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) embracing Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner). Some are mistaking this for old footage too (their Castle Black reunion), but it’s actually the two reuniting at Winterfell in the final season.

Also in the mix: A first look at True Detective‘s long-awaited season 3 (True Detective put out a separate full trailer for the new season) and Meryl Streep joining Big Little Lies season 2. The footage aired in front of the season finale of Sharp Objects.
Foreign Affairs / *brett Baier: Trump ‘not 100 Percent Truthful’ In Fox News Interview❗* by orizonfountain(m): 6:10am On Aug 25, 2018
Fox News anchor Bret Baier said Friday that President Trump was “not 100 percent truthful” during a recent interview with the network.

“I mean, the president’s rollout of explaining this has not been clear,” Baier said on Friday, referring to comments Trump made about payments his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen made to two women who say they had affairs with Trump.

Trump said in the interview aired Thursday on "Fox and Friends" that he only knew about he payments "later on."

But a secret recording released last month by Cohen appears to show he and Trump talking about paying to purchase the story of former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who says she had an affair with Trump in 2006.

“The Washington Post says it’s a flat out lie in their fact-checking. I think you could look back at the statements and clearly he was not 100 percent truthful as he laid that out,” Baier said.
Jokes Etc / TRAMADOL!!! *naked Man Running After Naked Woman Arrested* by orizonfountain(m): 4:26pm On Aug 24, 2018
A police night patrol team recently arrested a naked young man who was under the influence of tramadol with an erected penis chasing another naked young lady in Sunyani. At the time the two naked young people were arrested around midnight by the police, they were sweating profusely but the young man insisted that the police should leave him to go and teach the young lady a ‘lesson’.

The Head of Tobacco and Substance Abuse of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Mrs Olivia Boateng, who made this known at the annual general meeting of the Association of Medicine Counter Assistants Ghana (AMCAG) at the Christ the King Hall in Accra recently said the abuse of tramadol is becoming a danger to the society but the FDA is doing whatever is possible to ensure that the medicine is only sold on prescription.

The FDA official explained further that if the poor lady who was obviously running away from her ‘predator’ as a result of a long bout of sex had not met the police patrol team, she would have suffered more long hours of sex. Mrs Boateng said a lot of crimes are being committed by young people under the influence of tramadol which is medically prescribed for managing severe pains.
Religion / *indonesia Woman Irked By mosque Noise Convicted Of Blasphemy☪ by orizonfountain(m): 2:12pm On Aug 24, 2018
An Indonesian court has sentenced a woman who complained about a noisy mosque to 18 months in prison for blasphemy. The ethnic Chinese woman, Meiliana, burst into tears as presiding Judge Wahyu Prasetyo Wibowo announced the sentence Tuesday. She was taken from the court in handcuffs. Prosecutors said the 44-year-old defendant violated the criminal code by committing blasphemy against Islam, the dominant faith in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Mobs burned and ransacked at least 14 Buddhist temples throughout Tanjung Balai, a port town on Sumatra, in a July 2016 riot following reports of Meiliana's complaint about a mosque's noisy loudspeakers. The woman's lawyer, Ranto Sibarani, said the sentence would be appealed. A conservative group, Islamic Community Forum, said Meilana's sentence was too light. The maximum sentence for blasphemy is five years.

Indonesia's Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and religion, but in recent years blasphemy cases have been filed against people perceived as offending Islam in a possible sign of a more conservative brand of the religion gaining ground in Indonesia. The overwhelming majority of cases end with guilty verdicts.
Celebrities / List Of Highest Paid Actors In 2018 by orizonfountain(m): 12:32pm On Aug 24, 2018
George Clooney may not have helmed a hit in years, but his wallet hasn’t noticed. Thanks to the up to $1 billion purchase of his Casamigos Tequila, Clooney scored a career high pretax paycheck of $239 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.

The 57-year-old tops Forbes’ annual ranking of highest-paid actors, which tallies both onscreen and extracurricular earnings in our 12-month scoring frame. Last June, British liquor conglomerate Diageo announced it would purchase Casamigos for $700 million up front with the potential for an extra $300 million over the next decade. For Clooney, that meant an estimated $233 million pretax from Casamigos, plus additional earnings from endorsements and older movies.

Clooney’s tequila cash edges Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson, who banked $124 million pretax to rank No. 2 on the highest-paid actors list. He tallied the largest ever acting take-home from front-of-camera roles in Celebrity 100 history, thanks to giant upfront paychecks and a cut of profits on blockbusters including Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. A huge social following allows him to negotiate an extra seven figures atop his standard contract for promotion, helping nearly double his 2017 earnings.

“Social media has become the most critical element of marketing a movie for me,” Johnson told Forbes.“I have established a social media equity with an audience around the world that there’s a value in what I’m delivering to them.”

Here's Forbes’ list of the world’s best-paid male actors 2018:

George Clooney - $239m
Dwayne Johnson - $119m
Robert Downey Jr - $79m
Chris Hemsworth - $64.5m
Jackie Chan -$45.5m
Will Smith - $42m
Akshay Kumar -$40.5m
Adam Sandler - $39.5m
Chris Evans - $34m
Salman Khan - $33.5m

Together, the world’s ten highest-paid actors tallied $748.5 million between June 1, 2017, and June 1, 2018, before fees and taxes. The salaries of top-earning male leads dwarf those of the world’s highest-paid actresses, who earned a cumulative $186 million in the same scoring period, or just one quarter of the men’s paydays.

Scarlett Johannson was revealed as the highest paid actress last week, earning $40.5m (£31.9m). That would have placed the Black Widow star as seventh in the male rankings. This is a departure from last year's Forbes list, which saw highest paid actress Emma Stone fail to score in the top 10 male earnings.

Forbes list of the world's best-paid actresses 2018
Scarlett Johansson - $40.5m
Angelina Jolie - $28m
Jennifer Aniston - $19.5m
Jennifer Lawrence - $18m
Reese Witherspoon - $16.5m
Mila Kunis - $16m
Julia Roberts - $13m
Cate Blanchett - $12.5m
Melissa McCarthy - $12m
Gal Gadot - $10m
Foreign Affairs / *trump Says 'everybody Would Be Very Poor' If He's Impeached * by orizonfountain(m): 6:11am On Aug 24, 2018
President Donald Trump said "everybody would be very poor" and questioned how he could be impeached when he's made strides improving economic conditions in an interview aired Thursday.

"If I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash, I think everybody would be very poor," Trump said in response to a question from Fox News' Ainsley Earhardt, who asked if he believes Democrats would try to impeach him if they win back control of Congress. "You would see numbers that you wouldn't believe."

"You know, I guess it says something like high crimes and all -- I don't know how you can impeach somebody who has done a great job," Trump said.

Trump said during the interview that he would give himself an "A+" if asked to grade his performance in office so far, citing his successful appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court and predicting that Brett Kavanaugh, his next high court pick, will be confirmed as well.
"I give myself an A+. I don't think any President has ever done what I have done," Trump said.
Sports / *GK Crisis: Man City Recall Muric From Loan* by orizonfountain(m): 6:34am On Aug 23, 2018
Manchester City have recalled goalkeeper Aro Muric from his loan with NAC Breda after Claudio Bravo suffered a ruptured Achilles in training.

City fear the Chile international could miss the entire 2018-19 campaign, leaving City with Ederson as their sole senior goalkeeper.

Joe Hart and Angus Gunn were allowed to join Burnley and Southampton respectively during the Premier League's transfer window, leaving City thin at the position.

But City have moved quickly to fill the gap left by Bravo's injury by bringing 19-year-old goalkeeper Muric back to the club.

Muric, who is yet to make a senior appearance for City, kept a clean sheet on his league debut for NAC Breda on Saturday.

And the Eredivisie side are hopeful of coming to an arrangement with City – or one of the Premier League champions' sister clubs – about providing a replacement for Muric.
Sports / *la Liga Players To Strike Over Games In USA⁉* by orizonfountain(m): 6:26am On Aug 23, 2018
La Liga players could take strike action over a deal to hold Spanish top-flight matches overseas for the first time.

Last week, La Liga announced it was partnering with sports and entertainment company Relevent for a 15-year deal pitting two top Spanish teams together in the United States once a season.

It would represent the first time a La Liga match would be played overseas and players are not ready to accept the terms of the agreement.

Stars including Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets were reportedly present as the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE) met on Wednesday to discuss the proposals.

"The players are outraged, very surprised, and are all against it. It's unanimous," said AFE president David Aganzo.

"The players don't want to play overseas. Things have to be done in a more coherent way and with common sense.

"A decision of this magnitude, that affects players, referees and fans, was taken unilaterally and is a lack of respect.

"I have information that there are certain clubs that are in favour [of strike action] and others against this, but I represent the players."
Foreign Affairs / *A 2020 Poll Has Some Bad News For Donald Trump* by orizonfountain(m): 6:14am On Aug 23, 2018
It’s never too early to start polling a presidential election that’s a mere 27 months away, so kudos to Morning Consult for offering head-to-head matchups featuring Donald Trump and a broad range of possible Democratic contenders.

These results seem pretty clearly driven by name-recognition — more people have heard of the governor of New York than of the governor of Montana, so Andrew Cuomo does better than Steve Bullock. Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are both about equally famous, so they do about equally well. Elizabeth Warren is more famous than the other non-Sanders senators, so she does better than they do.

But the more remarkable thing is the incredible stability of Donald Trump’s numbers.

From a floor of 28 percent to a ceiling of 32 percent he has a very solid base of supporters — but it’s a base that is just not that big. For all the attention lavished on “Trump Voters Still Like Trump” stories, a candidate who got 46 percent of the vote in 2016 can only count on about a third of the electorate to commit to his reelection.

In the real world, over the course of an actual campaign, Trump would end up doing better than that against any of the people on this list. (Just as if people found out about Steve Bullock his numbers would converge with Biden’s.) But it underscores that Trump’s level of support is fundamentally quite soft.

Foreign Affairs / *cohen’s Lawyer Claims The Flip Happened Because Of The Trump-putin Meeting * by orizonfountain(m): 10:43pm On Aug 22, 2018
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime personal lawyer and fixer, effectively turned on his former boss on Tuesday by implicating him in federal crimes related to illegal campaign contributions. That was shocking, since Cohen had earlier claimed he would take a bullet for Trump.

So why did Cohen flip? Cohen’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, offered a surprising answer on Wednesday: Trump’s actions during his July meeting in Helsinki with Russian President Vladimir Putin were what finally convinced him to turn on Trump.

Davis told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that “Helsinki was a significant turning point” for Cohen, “as he worried about the future of our country with the president of the United States aligning with somebody who everybody in his intelligence community ... said that Putin interfered and tried to help Trump get elected.”

“That shook up Mr. Cohen,” Davis added.
