Nairaland / General / Did Smartphones And Social Media Deplete Our Humaneness? by Papzey(f): 10:41pm On Apr 29, 2017
Humaneness is described as the sympathetic concern of the well-being of other in the English dictionary. It can also be said to be the quality of consideration or compassion for others. In Ren (Confucianism), humaneness is defined as Human-ness, the essence of the being human. And it further says the way of humaneness is human interaction. I am going to be focusing on the human interaction part. How much do we interact physically with each other in this new social media era? Why have smartphones depleted our human interaction with others and our environment?

In this social media era, with smartphones becoming widely available at affordable prices, and internet data subscription getting cheaper, physical human interaction has been suffering. The way people (especially teenagers and youths) are always immersed in their phones and the internet instead of connecting with the people around them in their environment is becoming alarming. The importance of the internet and social media cannot be overemphasized, but the adverse effects it is having on us should not be neglected.

There is a lot that can be learned on the internet. My own personal quote is that “you would be overwhelmed by the information on the internet”. We also connect and network on the social media, but at what cost? If you walk into a fast food restaurant right now, you would see people on the same table with their faces glued to their smartphones trying to upload pictures they’d just snapped on Facebook, SnapChat, and Instagram. This little gesture of using the phone instead of focusing on bonding with the people you are out with is harmful.

Imagine I am out on a date with my girlfriend. I am trying to reply my messages on WhatsApp while she is busy moderating her notifications on Facebook. This clearly shows that we are spending time together but we are not actually together. We are living in a world where constant seeking of likes and comments on social media contents is more important than going out and meeting people for real. We have replaced the normal reality with virtual reality. Girls now feel obliged to wake up each morning, bath, makeup and dress-up in different dresses just to snap pictures in various poses and upload on the social media. This does mean they are leaving their homes. Boys are out in a joint or location and they are constantly updating their statuses to their online friends/followers just for show.

It is more comfortable for people to pour out their minds on the social media to people who literally do not care, instead of sharing their thoughts with close family members and friends. Now, people assume they know a lot about you when they visit your social media profile and timelines. We are eager to share recent happenings in our lives first on the social media, whereas, our friends and family members may only get to know about these things if they are friends with us on our social media. The number of time husbands and wives spend connecting with their online friends on the social media, with children also addicted to the nice games on smartphones, families miss unique opportunities to further bond and connect physically. What we have now is children being trained by the internet and getting pressured by peers on the social media. We can’t ignore the pornography and other illicit contents that should be controlled by parents on children’s smartphones, but because the parents are also busy on their own social media platforms to notice, nobody checks the children.

In most of the recent suicide cases, investigations always tend to show suicide victims had been dropping hints about their problems on social media platforms long before they take their own lives. Their posts show different patterns of stress and depression. All these signs may never be picked up by close friends and family members in real life.

Literature / POETRY: DEATH By Bridget Olufunmi by Papzey(f): 10:32pm On Apr 29, 2017
Scared!
A whistle slips through the hole
And becomes a breath
Everything becoming unusual
Like everything that takes credit for fear!
Sun melting the cloud
Sky deserting her home
Far above, a bunch of galaxies dangles
Hanging on threads of polite winds
Sun and moon perching upon roofless skies
Dangling simultaneously with the stars
Shadows deserting bodies
Silhouettes gaining sinews
Nightfall fleeing downwards
Days becoming like brick houses
Refusing to break
No times no seasons
Stars jingling like church bells
Fear!!!
Of sun loosing her grips and crashing
We will all burn. burn!
Round d world, skies are walls
And inside, are dark hollow holes
A crossing over is death
She stands akimbo
Veiled in d apparel of snow
The wind smoking a pipe billowing dusts
Star kissing her lover, striking a fire
Igniting a kaleidoscope of lightning
Of crimson n blue flames and sulfur
A sound escapes from the hole
Rising and suspending
Like the striking of bare feet upon pedals
A whistle slips through the hole
And becomes a breath
It was death, breathing her last.

Health / 13 Rules For Longevity! by Papzey(f): 12:34pm On Apr 29, 2017
Do you know that good health cements longevity in life?

Do you want to live long in life?

Do you know the secret of long life?

It is true that every man must die sometime, yet very few live out the natural term of life. An old adage said, "man does not die; he kills himself." So, how does man kills himself?

We have all heard about men who lived to great age; some of them lived to be over a hundred years old. But in the case of these centenarians, many of them were found to have began to care for their health early in life.

When we are young, and we are warned against doing some things that injure the health, we scoff and say, "I am young and strong," all because we believe to be young is to have good health and be strong physically.

Whatever you sow, you shall reap. The young person who forms bad habits of living is sowing the seeds of disease in his body, it is certainly sure that sooner or later he reap ill health.

Here are the 13 Rules Of Longevity;

1. Make sure the rooms you occupy are properly ventilated.
2. Seek out-of-doors occupations and recreation.
3. Sleep out-of-doors if you can.
4. Avoid overeating.
5. Breathe deeply.
6. Eat sparingly of meats and highly spiced foods.

Investment / 7 Reasons Why You Should Invest In Real Estate by Papzey(f): 2:16pm On Apr 28, 2017
Are you one of those who is constantly looking for new and cool money-making ways to properly invest your income into? Do you know that Real Estate is one of the most robust investment options, especially for the long run? When you read the whole of this article, you would really surely love to delve into real estate business.

Ink & Pen’s Blog -the only blog that cares for her readers- shares 7 cogent reasons why you should take advantage of the robust investment option in real estate and smartly invest.
1. It is as safe as Houses
“Safe as houses” is a popular slang in real estate that chiefly means real estate investments are impeccably safe because of the paying character of house property as an investment. Property value tends to increase without the volatility of the share market which makes it an exceptional safer investment. When you factor in the return and risks associated with buying property and shares, a property is considered a far safer investment.

2. It Doesn’t Need Specialist Knowledge
You actually don’t need expert knowledge to start investing in real estate. It is far easier to research than stock and shares. The stock market requires a lot of education to understand, and also the help of research brokers and fund managers is highly important.
Investing in properties is, however, a lot simpler: it’s as simple as reciting the alphabets, A B C… You can personally go online to search for properties from legitimate and registered realtors, real estate firms or property and real estate listing websites. A substantial amount of research can be done online, by visiting open houses and auctions or contacting realtors and real estate firms, without the need to have a vast expert knowledge beforehand.

3. Technology Has Made Things a lot Easier
Today, technology has made real estate investments much easier. For example, you can now advertise your properties on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter or post an ad on a property and real estate listings websites like Jumia House, privateproperty.com.ng, homebureau.com.ng, ToLet.ng, Nigeria Property Center etc. There are so many technologies available to real estate investors that you can easily manage a portfolio of properties without the need to even leave your home.

4. it’s a Remarkable Flexible Investment
With a property, regardless of your financial aims, you are most likely able to find an investment strategy that works for you. The long-term capital growth strategy in the long-term of property purchased brings capital gain (provided that the right area with correct supply/demand ratio and demographics is selected).

Second, there’s the positive cash flow strategy where you can rent out the property for cash flow. Another value strategy is that you can renovate, subdivide or even alter the use of an existing property to develop, create or increase the value of the property.

Health / Why You Should Stop Shaving Your Pubic Hair Completely by Papzey(f): 2:07pm On Apr 28, 2017
Do you shave your pubic hair completely? Are you aware that by shaving completely, your pubic region is vulnerable to infections? Read on to see why you should stop shaving completely.

Contrary to popular acclaimed hygienic practice, an Abuja-based medical expert, Dr. Arikawe Adeolu, has warned of the downsides in completely shaving the pubic hair. He advised that it is safer to lightly trim the pubic hair than shaving it off fully because complete shaving can expose the pubic area to infections. Dr. Adeolu mentioned that waxing or shaving of the hair around the pubic area could result in cracks and make it vulnerable to skin bacterial infection. He further added that the pubic hair represents a major function of providing some level of protection for the individual, especially during sexual activity, avoiding the skin from rubbing against another and causing abrasion.

By shaving the pubic region completely, during sexual activity, an individual’s skin may come in contact with their partner’s skin. As a result of this, the risk of friction occurring would be increased due to the skin-to-skin contact. Individuals who are troubled about the lack of hygiene due to untended pubic hair should trim rather than complete shaving or waxing of the hair.

Dr. Adeolu asserted that “when one shave the pubic hair completely, it regrows in a slanted style with the tips at times growing into the pubic skin, which can crack open the skin. This crack cannot be seen with the naked eyes because they are small. Due to this crack and loss of protection of the skin at that level, the risk of contracting infections is highly increased.”

Health / 6 Foods To Avoid When Sick - NO 4 Will Shock You by Papzey(f): 10:29am On Apr 23, 2017
All humans, at a point in time, get sick. In order to stay strong when down with flu or illness, there are some important types of foods you should avoid, in order for the illness not to worsen. These foods make it hard for the body to recover quickly.

This article provides details on foods to avoid when sick. Below are six foods and beverages you should avoid when you’re sick so you can get better faster.

1. COFFEE

When you should skip it: If you have any type of illness, but especially a stomach bug.

Why it makes you feel worse: The caffeine in coffee is a diuretic, which can make you urinate a lot and leave you dehydrated.

That’s bad news when you’re battling a virus or other infection, since getting enough hydration helps your immune system fight more effectively, says Kristine Arthur, M.D., an internist at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.

Caffeine is even worse when you’re dealing with vomiting or diarrhea since both can cause you to lose fluid. Taking in extra caffeine on top of that will only make that dehydration worse. Plus, caffeine can actually stimulate the muscles in your digestive tract and make your diarrhea more intense, Arthur says.

2. ORANGE JUICE

When you should skip it: If you have a cough or a sore throat.

Why it makes you feel worse: Orange juices tart acidity is usually refreshing. But when you have a cough or cold, it can hurt your throat.

“It contains citric acid, which irritates the lining of your already-inflamed throat,” says Taz Bhatia, M.D., professor of integrative medicine at Emory University and author of What Doctors Eat.

This means your throat will hurt more and take longer to heal.

Romance / How To Get A Woman's Phone Number With Style by Papzey(f): 11:13pm On Apr 21, 2017
You sure know it's time to exchange phone number once you have broken the ice and a good conversation has been initiated with a woman.

But what will set you apart from every other guy out there that she meets?

How about a business card? Yes a business card! It doesn't necessarily have to be a card with your business details on it, but your contact details.

With a business card, you can get a woman's phone number with style without even asking for her phone number.

You should carry pre-made cards everywhere you go like a business man. It could simply be a card with a picture of you on the background, and has your name in the top corner and your phone number and email address in the bottom corner.

Once upon a time, I was talking to these two beautiful ladies that I'd met at a friend-of-friends' party and we hit it off instantly. And when they were about to leave, I noticed that one of them went to get their bags.

She came back with her phone, and as she was about to ask for my phone number, I handed her one of my cards instead. She stared at the card and said, "A business card... that's super hot. Wow!"
And truly, they both called the next day.

If you are really into women, you will surely know that meeting and attracting women is big business, and sometimes a difficult business. So why not just be prepared with a business card?

Business cards will put you a step ahead of women and at least 5 steps ahead of the average Tom, Dick, and Harry trying to hit on the same women with you.

Literature / Flash Fiction/ Badoo The Rapist by Papzey(f): 11:01pm On Apr 21, 2017
He has been tailing this brown haired short and plump lady for the last 30 minutes. She was wearing a blue short gown tightly fitted to her body. Her face wasn't all that cute but she had a wonderful round and sexy shape like those of Nollywood actresses. Her chest was wide with the two twins on it appearing to be fighting for freedom. Her butt was wiggling in tandem with her legs movement. Watching her was like seeing a Fashion show in Paris on TV to Ben AKA Badoo.

He continued to follow. The street was empty as if the whole residents had just deserted after an Ijaw militants invasion. Ben was wearing just a singlet and a short. He had forgotten his shirt at that joint he smoked Indian helm, swallowed tramadol pills and drank local gin. His head was banging like a disco night club and his eyes were becoming more sharp and fierce. The dongle in his briefs was rock hard and struggling for freedom. "I have to Bleep this girl" He told himself. I saw her follow that corner that was always empty.

There is an uncompleted new house building on that road. Ben accelerated towards the lady at a pace of a an Hot he-bull courting a she-bull in her heat period. He charged forward and calculated the distance between the lady and the nearest exit. He called for her to wait. She looked back in shock as if she didn't know someone was walking behind her.

"Yes, what can I do for you bros" she muttered. Ben moved closer to her and didn't even know what to say.

"Baby, I like you. I want us to date."

"Is that why you called me?"

"Yes, e no reach?"

"I beg, my Aunty sent me on an errand. I don't have time for this rubbish."

She attempted to turn and move but Ben held her from behind, used one of his arm to cover her mouth, and in another second, swiftly carried her with the other arm. He charged into the building. She struggled to get free, screaming, kicking, biting, spitting but Ben didn't let go. He dragged her into a room and smashed her to the ground in a WWE smack-down move. She cried immediately, and before she could move, Ben had already pushed down his short and brief, jumped on her, and wrestling off her panties. Before he could penetrate her, an heavy blow hit him on the head.

Health / What Do You Know About Warts That Grows On The Body? by Papzey(f): 6:39pm On Apr 21, 2017
What do you know about Warts?

Warts are unwanted, non-threatening skin growths on the top layer of the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They mostly turn up on the fingers, around the fingernails, or sometimes in the genital area.

Symptoms of Warts:

Warts can arise in different shapes and size. They can be round and bumpy, flat and rough or sometimes smooth. The symptoms of warts vary with the types of warts. Further explanations below:

• Common Warts: They usually grow on the hands. They are rough, grainy, and grey-brown in color and have a rounded top.

• Plantar Warts: They can appear on the soles of the foot. They usually grow into the skin, and not out of the skin. This growth can make standing and walking difficult and painful.

• Flat Warts: They can develop on the face, arms or legs. They are usually multiple small bumps packed in an area. Due to scraping, they have flat tops and are light yellow, pink or light brown in color.

• Periungual Warts: They develop around or under the fingernails or toenails and can be painful. They appear as jagged bumps with a rough surface.

• Filiform Warts: They can grow on the face, neck, eyelids, or lips. They are usually long, thin and same color with the flesh.

How to Prevent Warts:

Wart viruses are communicable. Hence, apply the following tips for preventing warts from spreading to others if you are already infected with warts:

• Do not pick at your warts.

• Keep your warts dry always because moisture makes warts worse.

• Always keep your warts properly covered with bandages.

• Wash your hands if you come in contact with any warts.

• Do not comb, brush or shave the area infected with warts as it could spread the virus to other areas of your body.

• To prevent genital warts from spreading, desist from sexual contact while infected with warts.

Health / Tips For Curing Sleeplessness by Papzey(f): 4:22pm On Apr 20, 2017
Do you struggle with sleeping at night? Being unable to sleep at night can bring about severe health complications. Sleeplessness is also called Insomnia.

Sleeplessness can make you depressed, overweight, irritable, tired, and ill. Enabling erratic sleep schedules because of heavy work or travel lifestyle can cause heart diseases, insulin resistance that leads to diabetes and regular infections because of depleted immunity even if you are otherwise healthy.

If you wake up frequently in the night or struggle to sleep at all for no apparent reason, you need to follow the tips below to get the sleep your body really deserves.

Tips to cure insomnia naturally

Don’t use gadgets at bedtime

Smartphones, laptops, tablets, televisions and other digital gadgets emit a blue light wavelength that affects your body’s levels of melatonin, a vital hormone that kicks in the sleep cycle.

Melatonin, which controls your sleep-wake cycle, is regulated by light and is released when it gets dark to wind you down and prepare the body for rest. Light from bulbs or gadgets, including backlit screens, disrupts its release and keeps you alert. This will not only make it harder for you to nod off but also lower the quality of rest when you finally sleep.

Sports / PFA Releases EPL Team Of The Year List, Sanchez Misses Out by Papzey(f): 3:56pm On Apr 20, 2017
The Professional Footballer's Association (PFA) of the English Premier League (EPL) just released the Team Of The Year Awards list for 2016/2017 footballing season, and many football fans across the world do not agree. The list is deemed controversial by many fans who believe some players should have been included/excluded.

The most notable player missing from the list is Arsenal's attacker, Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez who initially made the nominations list of the PFA Player Of The Award is missing in the TOTY. Many believe Sachez should have been on the list instead of Liverpool's Saido Mane. Zlatan is not on the list too, though both players made the PFA POTY nominees list.

Four Chelsea players; Eden Hazard, Ngolo Kante, Gary Cahill, and David Luiz made the TOTY list. Others include Everton's Romelu Lukaku; Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Danny Rose, and Kyle Walker of Totenham Hotspur; Liverpool's Saido Mane; and Manchester United's goal keeper, David De Gea.

Nairaland / General / MTN Urges Customers Not To Pay More For Airtime Recharge Cards by Papzey(f): 3:37pm On Apr 20, 2017
I just received an SMS from MTN Nigeria urging its customers not pay more than the amount that is printed on every airtime recharge cards. The message originally reads:

"Dear customer, please do not agree to pay more than the amount that is printed on any MTN recharge card. Remember - what you see is what you pay!"

I guess they must have got news that many recharge card dealers have been adding N10/20 to sales amount of recharge cards and they are not pleased with that. All MTN customers should receive the same message too.

I personally have been experiencing the hike in price of airtime recharge cards for three days now. Every where I go around my community, they sell 100 recharge card for N110 and 200 for N210. This is bad because we all know MTN didn't increase the price, but ordinary Nigerians placed the hike on it to the detriment of every other MTN customers.

This price hiking of goods is common among many Nigerian traders. It is sheer wickedness. How do you set a price that is not in line with that of main manufacturer? This is bad for business. I hope the appropriate regulators can clamp down on traders who sells recharge cards for prices which is not what is printed on it.

Remember, what you see is what you pay. This act by the traders is corruption. Do not agree to pay!

Phones / How To Track/locate Your Missing Phone by Papzey(f): 12:20pm On Apr 20, 2017
Do you know you can track the exact location of your missing or stolen phone? You can actually trace your phone before going to the police.

Many of us leave with that constant fear that our phones can get missing or stolen anytime.

What if I tell you can stop leaving with that fear if you follow the technique I am about to share with you now.

Every damn phone on planet earth has a unique code called the IMEI number. The full meaning of that abbreviation is International Mobile Equipment Identity number which can be used to track a phone anywhere in the world.

Here is how it works:

1. Dial *#06# on your mobile device, you should always do this immediately you acquire a new mobile phone.

2. Your mobile phone will show a unique 15 digits number.

3. Jot down this number in a secure place, like in a diary or notebook, or anywhere else except on your mobile phone, as this is the number that could only be used to track the phone in case of theft.

Nairaland / General / OPINION: "There's No Such Thing As Igbo Tribe! Igbo Is A Nation" by Papzey(f): 4:11pm On Apr 19, 2017
OPINION: "There's No Such Thing as Igbo Tribe! Igbo is a Nation" - Eke Esther

This is an opinion piece by a Facebook User named Eke Esther. She analyses how the Igbo People have become marginalised in the Nigerian Political sphere because of erroneous generalisation. Read more to enjoy her piece.

The first military coup in Nigeria was led by Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. It was tagged an "Igbo coup." He was from Delta; he "wasn't Igbo". Yet that coup sparked off an ethnic cleansing that saw over 1 million Igbos slaughtered in the North of Nigeria. Not to mention that the civil war that claimed over 3 million Igbo lives was rooted in the politics of that coup.

Fast forward to 2015. Igbos became a 5-percent Nigerian demography because of one man called Goodluck Azikiwe Jonathan. Hat-wearing Azikiwe was not Igbo, yet Igbos inherited his odium, suffering political exclusion till date.

Igbos need to look inwards and properly define the family.

All the same, it's not entirely an Igbo fault. If there's a fight between, say Igbos and Hausas in the North, machetes will hardly listen to an Emeka who is not Igbo. Nigerians seek ethnic identity mainly in names. The world is going transracial as we speak. Ethnicity will soon become as politicised and complicated as gender dynamics. Ethnicity can also be an ongoing personal referendum.

The Igbo tribe—no, there's no such thing as "Igbo tribe"—and this is actually the point of this update. It is derogatory to call the Igbo a tribe. The Igbo would have been a tribe some 100 years ago. Not anymore. I find it offensive to be so described and I just want everyone to note that. Tribes, usually undeveloped and uncivilised, are marked by a land and subsistence economy. Igbo is a nation, only without a state.

Crime / Rev King Set To Be Executed In Lagos State by Papzey(f): 3:54pm On Apr 19, 2017
Do you remember the General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, known as Rev. King, who was sentenced to death by hanging, by the appeal court and upheld by the Supreme court on 27th February, 2016? He will soon be executed by the Lagos State Government.

According to the State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem, during the ministerial press conference held in Lagos yesterday, he mentioned that the state government reviewed the matter, with a view to taking a critical decision very soon.

He mentioned that he visited the Lagos state prisons recently, and found out that those on death row were acting as though they had certain rights, which excluded them from being executed. The prison officials also complained about this attitude.

Kazeem said: “Very soon, you will see the action of this government on that issues, we are reviewing the case on Rev. King and others on death row. .

Lots of people are on death row, Rev. King is not the only one on death row, it is on the instruction of Governor Ambode that I visited the prisons recently and I discuss the issue with the prison officials and they expressed their concerns.

We are moving in that direction of signing the decision. The prison officials said we need to look at that seriously. Those on death row are beginning to think they have some rights. We are going to move in that direction, you will hear from me, but I will not tell you the exact date.”

NYSC / Are You Getting Set For NYSC Orientation Camp? See Tips Here! by Papzey(f): 3:17pm On Apr 19, 2017
Are you one of those preparing for the next National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) orientation camp? Prospective corp members, have you been posted yet? Oh you are going to Maiduguri ba? No need to cry Otondo! All will be well! All you need do right now is go through this post extensively.

Here are some basic tips you need to get acquainted with before setting foot out of your home;

Preparation!
You need to prepare well because life in camp is surely going to be stressful. Orientation camp is to prepare you for the challenges you may face throughout your service year. You ma find it uncomfortable because it won't be like your personal home, so just zero your mind for a new experience and adventure.

So before packing all those jagbanjantis into your BIG bags. here is a list of what you'd actually need;

Very important Camp Items (you won't be allowed into the camp premises without these)
1. Statement of result/ transcript.
2. School final year I.D card.
3. Passport photographs (up to 30 copies, excess is better than shortage)
4. Call-Up letter (be it printed online or from the school, and should not be laminated!)
5. A clear bad file to house all these documents.

Other Important Items
6. Stationeries (stapler, pens, gum e.t.c to save you from borrowing)
7. Two/Three white round neck shirts and shorts (maybe more for the big boys and big girls who would like to seldom wash. NOTE: Two sets would be provided for you but may be of poor quality)
8. Two/Three pair of socks and a rubber tennis shoe (for the rainy days)
9. Bathroom Slippers and White tennis shoe (NOTE: One white tennis shoe would be provided for you in the camp)
10. Bathing, Cleaning and Cloth washing items (bucket/s, toilet papers, bath-soaps, detergent, soap case and bailer, disinfectants e.t.c... NOTE: Bucket would be available for sale in the camp but may be relatively more expensive)
11. Bed spread, towel, and maybe two casual wears for Sundays.
12. Mosquito net (well most camps would've been fumigated before your arrival, so not compulsory)
13. Handkerchiefs, cooler, cups and spoons.
14. Waist bag (highly essential to house your phones and chargers, cash and other little items)
15. Novels and Motivational books (because sometimes you could be bored to death), or GMAT materials.
16. Phone, power bank, and charger (smart phones with high-resolution cams for a lot of selfies and browsing), also small-sized torch or lamps.
17. Your ATM cards (to withdraw cash for enough flexing in the Maami market Lol)
18. Beverages (bring enough because the kitchen food may not be palatable at all times)
