The main Genotypes available are AA, which is the ideal Red blood heamoglobin Genotype, AS which is a carrier, the less common AC, SC, and the most painful of all, SS.

A person with genotype SS is referred to commonly as a sickler because most of the time, the person is ill in the hospital for a significant amount of their life. A number of sickle cell sufferers die before their 5th birthday. The rest struggle to adulthood. Being a sickler as an adult comes with its own set of problems that not many people know.

Nobody likes to be sick. Now imagine being sick because of something your parents could have prevented.

If a couple both have AS or AC genotype, every pregnancy owned by the couple has a 25% chance of having a child with Genotype SS or SC. This means that either some or all of thier children might be affected, none at all, or they might become carriers. Now factor in the depreciating naira today, it wouldn't be wrong to say that for each child they want to have. Paul and Paulina have to budget about $1000 for this prenatal screening. That is not the same as $10.

The cure for sickle cell is a procedure called a bone marrow transplant. A relative of the child will donate his/ her bone marrow to the child. It has a 90% success rate.It is presently not done in Nigeria or if it is, it is still in the early stages. It has to be done in the first few months of a baby's life.
Many people choose to travel to countries like India, turkey and Rome for this procedure. As of 3 years ago, the cost of the procedure and the six months hospital stay was about 25 million, not including travel expenses and other miscallenous like visa application and so on.
But in our present economy, Budget 30- 55 million naira

How many of us can afford it?

Or they can choose to see their child suffer, while also suufering financially, emotionally, mentally, the stress if it all will eat away at the romantic bonds that they once shared.

I didn't even talk about how it affects the person, because that is a separate thread. We all know someone with this disease.
