Good day, guys. I need your help. What are the ways by which I can convincingly establish strong home ties, particularly when my employer is my sponsor? Thanks. |

Nozino: Thanks for your response. You are saying that I can both pay the visa fee and secure a visa interview date even before getting Form I-20? |

I have been unable to apply for Form I-20 because I am still solving my proof of funds problem with my employer. I'm not sure how long this will take. But I'll like to apply for Form I-20 as soon as possible. Can I apply for Form I-20 with a proof of funds that is different from the one I will eventually use to apply for a student visa? To rephrase: must the proof of funds I present to the school for Form I-20 be the same as the one I present to the embassy? I hope to hear from you guys soon. |

Hello guys. I have just been awarded a scholarship to study at New York University, to begin studies this fall. But here is the rub: the scholarship only covers 2 out of 3 semesters. I have plans for taking care of accomodation, but my problem is this: How to pay for the third semester when the time comes (fall next year), and how to prove to the embassy that I can pay for the third semester. I can't even use my bank statement because I am not earning enough in naira. What can I do? I would appreciate if you guys could walk me through this. Thanks. |

Uche231213 Hello. I studied the link you were kind enough to send to me yesterday, but I didn't see any information on whether or not one is to submit proof of having secured accommodation in Ireland. How does one show that one has a place to stay in the country? Is that something I indicate in the application letter or does the person housing me have to write a letter? I hope to hear from you. |

Well understood; thanks. If I may also ask: I plan to pay 50% of my tuition fee for the September session and the balance next January after landing in Ireland. I understand the school fees receipt is part of the supporting document I am to submit at the VFS center. My question: does the fact that I will pay 50% of the school fees, rather than the full fees, impact my chances of receiving a visa? I hope to hear from you. Uche231213: |

Uche231213: Hey, man. Congrats on receiving a visa. I'll soon apply for a student visa and want to ask you some questions, as I have found certain conflicting information online: What is the process? What is the role of VFS Global in the visa application process? Where does one do the biometric thing? (P.S.: I live in Lagos). i hope to hear from you. Thanks. |

Hello, guys. I need your help on the best way to go about paying tuition fee, especially considering the currency fluntuation. A Dublin-based university has just offered me an admission for a master's program. But I don't know the best, and cheapest way, to pay the tuition fee. Some people have told me to use a bank; some others, black market. I'm confused, and I hope to get some insightful answers. Thanks in advance. |

Ibime: Bla, bla, bla. More condescension from someone who thinks you do not know football if you are not 150 years old. I'm a Barça fan, and you think I wouldn't know of R9's goal? But that's not the point. The question is: which of Pele's goals remains a part of modern-day pop culture, just like Maradona's solo run against England or Zidane's volley against Bayer Leverkusen? No one cares if he was the first to dribble on the moon. We are talking about his greatness/legacy/popularity/impact. You say he has more than Messi. So which of his goals are instantly recognizable by many in pop culture today? 12 Likes |

forgiveness: Complete player does not refer to a player who can score with his head, shoulders, knees and toes, Azonto (as the typical 12-year-old Redditor believes). In football terms, it refers to a player who can play in multiple positions and can give you many things on the pitch: playmaking, scoring, etc. 2 Likes |

Ibime: But your logic of gauging an individual's greatness with team trophies is sound? Messi will not be as popular when he retires. But many years from now, his solo goal against Getafe will remain a cultural meme, as will Maradona's goal against England from 36 years ago. Which of Pele's goals has dominated the popular imagination in that way? Answer: none. 10 Likes |

Ibime: "Of your generation." Condescension and ageism are not valid arguments, man. So it is because of this generation's ignorance that there is no Pele goal that is instantly recognizable in modern-day pop culture or that is as ubiquitous as Maradona's solo run against England or Messi's solo run against Getafe? You don't even know how to argue. You keep shifting the goal post and cannot maintain a syllogistic thought. First you said you were talking about greatness (which really is legacy/popularity) and not who the better player is, and then I talked about how Messi has more instantly recognizable goals in pop culture, and now you are contradicting yourself by saying that Pele's goal in the 1958 final is "better" than anything Messi scored in the World Cup (I thought we were talking about greatness, not who is better or has scored the better goals?) Please read philosophy and learn logic. You clearly have a problem with maintaining a line of reasoning. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Ibime, Also, speaking of influence/legacy, how many of Pele's goals are instantly recognizable in popular culture? People know Messi's run against Getafe and Athletic Bilbao, his header against United and the out-of-the-box goal he scored against them in '11, his freekick goal against Liverpool, his solo run against Real Madrid on receiving a pass in the midfield from Busquets. And now I think the long-range shot he scored against Mexico in this World Cup and the assist he provided in the Netherlands game will enjoy that pop culture status. So popular are these goals that they have become memes. Which of Pele's goals is in the popular imagination like any of the ones cited above? At least Maradona has the Hand of God goal and the famous run against England. 9 Likes |

Ibime: Since your argument is about who is greater and not who is better, how then can something as subjective as greatness be measured? You say by team trophies and stats, which I don't think is a good benchmark for measuring greatness. But to indulge you: How many stats does Pele have more than Messi? (reasonable ones, I mean; not that non-penalty goals strawman). Besides the World Cup, does Pele have more trophies than Messi? Did you add freekick goals, individual awards, Olympic gold medal and Copa America? Under-20 World Cup? Greatness is simply popularity/influence. And yes, Messi (and CR7) is the far more popular and influential footballer. He currently has the most liked photo in social media history and nearly half a billion followers on Instagram. Of course, playing in the social media era helped, as I said earlier. Now I hear Argentina wants to put Messi's face on one of their banknotes. How many people in the street do you see wearing Pele's jersey today? Pele is the GOAT my foot. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

Ibime: "Deliberately foolish." No need for puerile ad hominems. Relax. Messi is not the GOAT because he won the World Cup (he still would be the GOAT even if he hadn't won it on Sunday). My argument for why Messi is the better/greater player (than Pele) is because he has more longevity, is the more complete player, has better technique, and because he played and thrived in a more modern and difficult era (against players with better technique and athleticism than those Pele faced). Bonus: he has more flair and his play style is more pretty to look at. There is now far more money in the game, unlike in Pele's era, meaning there's not much separating traditional football powerhouses from the small fish. It's why countries like Croatia, Morocco, Iceland and Saudi Arabia can now be expected to do well even against teams like Germany and Brazil. There have also been innovations in diet, sports science and technology—meaning players are stronger and faster—and tactical systems have evolved and become far more complex than they were in the 50s and 60s. There's a reason the names of many defenders from that era aren't a staple in the modern imagination. I would like to think that speaks to the middling quality of defenders and defending generally in that era—so unimpressive that not many of their names survived into the modern era. Pele was a great footballer, but Messi did it in a more difficult and sophisticated era. You are being deliberately foolish claiming a player with 3 World Cups, 12 non penalty goals, 10 assists in 14 games has no argument against a player with 8 non penalty goals and 8 assists in 25 games First, put to bed this non-penalty goals strawman. Penalties are a part of the game, are they not? Did you play football in your youth or for a community club? If you did, you will know scoring a penalty demands great skill and mental toughness from a player, perhaps even more than an open play goal in some cases. Which do you think came with more pressure/stress and was more likely to have turned the momentum against Argentina in Sunday's game had either of the players not scored it: Di Maria's shot that produced Argentina's second goal or Messi's shot from the penalty spot? Anyone with the smallest football knowledge knows that the penalty kick was wracked with more tension. So Messi should have turned down the chance to play the penalties Argentina got? Such primary school logic. I guess Harry Kane deliberately missed his against France, since penalties are so easy and not worthy of being counted as goals. As I hinted earlier, using team trophies is not a sound way to gauge a player's football ability, for the simple reason that there are many averagely talented footballers with a World Cup and many Champions League titles to their name. It simply is the case of being in the right team at the right time, or in Pele's case, being born in the right country at the right time—would he have won 1, not to talk of 3 World Cups, if he had been born in Yugoslavia and did not play in a Brazil superteam? You are basically premising Pele's football greatness and ability on geographical happenstance. How clever is that. Football is a team sport—it's lazy reasoning to conclude that more trophies equals better ability. In which case, Dani Alves must be a greater and better footballer than Pele since he's won more trophies than him. While you are at it, please throw away that Pele has 7 Ballon d'Ors argument. He did not win it during his career and no one cares about whatever hindsight analysis France Football has done. History is never a linear path—no one can say for sure that he would have won that many Ballon d'Ors during his career had it also been awarded to non-Europeans. As talented as Mbappe is, he still hasn't won one at 24. 15 Likes 1 Share |

Ibime: You didn't watch Pele play live, neither did you see him play in many games. What you rely on are "many Pele documentaries" and statistics (which is hardly a reliable way of gauging a footballer's ability), meaning you have no true first-hand empirical knowledge about his ability, and yet you are fully convinced he is the greatest footballer of all time? Doesn't seem like sound reasoning to me. (At any rate, you are in the minority. Most people choose Messi). That aside, you said all the "euphoria" around Messi would die down in ten years time. I don't think any right-minded person believes that. Have you seen the man's digital footprint and cultural influence? If anything, it's Pele's legacy that's at stake—maybe that's why he keeps tinkering with his records on his Instagram page, aware that the world is moving on. The likes of Messi and CR7 were lucky to have played in the social media era, and there are billions of clips of them online, unlike Pele whose legacy is solely hinged on word of mouth. 50 more years or so and no one would bother about a player that played in the black-and-white era. Seems to me like Pele was your football hero growing up and you are stubbornly clinging to the past, because I have read your comments on this thread and have not seen any good arguments from you to back up your claims. 23 Likes 5 Shares |
