Health / Dyslexia by physiofit: 5:41pm On Nov 06, 2015
What is dyslexia?

A good way to understand dyslexia is to establish what it is not. It’s not a sign of low intelligence or laziness. It’s also not due to poor vision. It’s a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language.

Dyslexia is primarily associated with trouble reading. Some doctors, specialists and educators may refer to it as a “reading disorder” or a “reading disability.” But it can also affect writing, spelling and even speaking.

People with dyslexia can still understand complex ideas. Sometimes they just need more time to work through the information. They may also need a different way to process the information, such as listening to an audiobook instead of reading it.

If your child has dyslexia, she won’t outgrow it. It’s a lifelong condition. But that doesn’t mean your child can’t be happy and successful. There are many effective teaching strategies and tools that can help your child. In fact, many people with dyslexia have successful careers in business, science and the arts.

Health / •what Is A Tumor? by physiofit: 4:41pm On Sep 28, 2015
What Is a Tumor?

A tumor is a mass of tissue that's formed by an accumulation of abnormal cells. Normally, the cells in your body age, die, and are replaced by new cells. With cancer and other tumors, something disrupts this cycle. Tumor cells grow, even though the body does not need them, and unlike normal old cells, they don't die. As this process goes on, the tumor continues to grow as more and more cells are added to the mass.

Health / Latest Ebola News: Chief Medical Officer In Liberia Quarantines Herself For 21da by physiofit: 12:16pm On Sep 28, 2014
Ebola virus

The chief medical officer of Liberia has put herself under Ebola quarantine for 21 days, following death of one of her assistants due to the Ebola virus. Bernice Dahn, Liberia’s deputy health minister said that although the medical officer had no symptoms of the Ebola virus disease, this measure is a mere precautionary step. According to the chief medical officer, other than the office assistant (who died early this week due to the Ebola), she had not come into contact with any other infected people but plans to follow every precaution.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 3,000 people have died from the Ebola virus disease in West Africa. Accounting to around 1,830 deaths, with more than 150 people died of Ebola in the last 2 days, Liberia is known to be the worst hit nation by the Ebola disease. The WHO has reported that around 375 healthcare workers are known to have been infected as of now and more than 211 have died so far from the virus in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Since the deadly Ebola virus gets easily transmitted through the infected body fluids, health workers are particularly more susceptible get infected by the virus. Hence, health organisations have advised isolation of suspected people for at least 21 days (incubation period for the virus).

Health / How Physical Exercise Protects The Brain From Stress-induced Depression by physiofit: 6:49pm On Sep 27, 2014
Physical exercise has many beneficial effects on human health, including the protection from stress-induced depression. However, until now the mechanisms that mediate this protective effect have been unknown. In a new study in mice, researchers show that exercise training induces changes in skeletal muscle that can purge the blood of a substance that accumulates during stress, and is harmful to the brain.

Health / Exercise Protects Against Depression – But How? by physiofit: 2:50pm On Sep 26, 2014
A new study, published in the journal Cell, investigates the mechanisms behind the protection from stress-induced depression offered by physical exercise.

Exercise has well-known benefits against symptoms of depression.

Last year, an updated systematic review by UK researchers analyzed 35 randomized controlled trials on the subject involving a total of 1,356 participants diagnosed with depression.

The systematic review found that exercising was as beneficial for people with depression as psychological therapy or taking antidepressants. However, the researchers cautioned that higher quality studies are needed to confirm the results.

Scientists know that during exercise, there is an increase in skeletal muscle of a protein called PGC-1a1. The researchers behind the new study – from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden – wanted to see whether this protein increase might be implicated in the protective benefits of exercise.

Genetically modified mice with high levels of PGC-1a1 in skeletal muscle (that showed many characteristics of well-trained muscles) were exposed – along with normal mice – to a stressful environment in the lab. This involved being exposed to loud noises, flashing nights and having their circadian rhythm reversed at irregular intervals.

After 5 weeks of being exposed to mild stress, the normal mice developed symptoms of depression, whereas the genetically modified mice displayed no depressive behavior.

“Our initial research hypothesis was that trained muscle would produce a substance with beneficial effects on the brain,” says Jorge Ruas, principal investigator at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet.

Investigating the genetically modified mice further, the researchers made the discovery that – as well as the elevated levels of PGC-1a1 – the mice also had higher levels of KAT enzymes. These enzymes convert kynurenine – a substance formed during stress – into kynurenic acid. The exact function of this acid is not known, but patients with mental illness are known to have high levels of it. www.physiofitnigeria.com

Health / Liberia’s Ebola Cases Will Likely Multiply As Suspected Patient Is Investigated by physiofit: 8:08pm On Sep 09, 2014
Liberia, which has seen the highest number of Ebola cases in the devastating outbreak that has left more than 2,000 dead, will likely see thousands more cases in the coming weeks, the World Health Organization said Monday.

On Tuesday, the Health Ministry in Rome announced it was investigating a 40-year-old woman who may be carrying the disease following a trip to Nigeria. If she tests positive, it would be the first known case of Ebola in Italy.

The WHO is estimating that it will take six to nine months to curtail the outbreak, the world’s worst. Liberia has had 1,089 deaths due to Ebola — more than half of the total reported across the continent. There are now more than 4,200 infected people across Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal, the latest figures show.

“The number of new cases is moving far faster than the capacity to manage them in Ebola-specific treatment centers,” the WHO said in a statement.
Ebola has now killed more than 2,000 people. The sign above reads, ‘Ebola is still in Guinea. Remain vigilant!’

The woman helped care for her doctor brother as he suffered from the debilitating disease caused by the Ebola virus.

At least 200 people who came in contact with Dr. Enemuo, who died last Friday in Port Harcourt, have been placed in quarantine for close medical watch.

Dr. Enemuo had contracted the virus when he was secretly treating a staff of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who, in turn, had had contact with Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American who initially brought the disease into Nigeria. Mr. Sawyer had slumped at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos shortly after arriving there on July 20. He was rushed to a Lagos Hospital where he died five days later. A doctor, Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, and two nurses who helped care for Mr. Sawyer in Lagos have also died.

SaharaReporters discovered that the ECOWAS diplomat who had had contact with Mr. Sawyer flew to Port Harcourt the same day the Liberian American died, and met up with Dr. Enemuo. Apparently aware of the deadly nature of the disease afflicting the diplomat, Dr. Enemuo opted to treat him secretly at a local hotel.

A private medical jet that has landed in Liberia to take two Ebola-infected US aid workers for treatment in the US is only able to carry one of them at a time, it was revealed on Saturday.
The limited capacity of the specially-equipped aircraft, which has an isolation tent on board, means that one of the two aid workers will have to remain in Liberia for several more days before being flown to the US for expert treatment.
The two aid workers have been named as Kent Brantly, 33, a doctor and father-of-two, and Nancy Writebol, 59, a missionary and mother-of-two. Both are said to be in a "grave but stable" condition.
