A History of the Niger Delta
An Historical Interpretation of Ijo Oral Tradition
by Abiegberi Joe Alagoa

The first title in a planned series of classic texts, written and published in Africa, on the history and culture of the Niger Delta. Long out of print, this book brings together oral traditional evidence and all other available historical material including the work of the eminent historian of the Niger Delta, Kenneth Owuka Dike. The study is an attempt to reconstruct the early history of the Ijo people of the Niger Delta, from the nineteenth century, using their own mostly oral traditions . The work has been considerably revised and updated to include material and research conclusions from the ongoing Ijo History Project on Niger Delta history chaired by the author.

In his lecture, Amasenibo Eric G. Jumbo listed out the current threat to Ibani Language which include Commerce and Christian Religion.

Also speaking, Warisenibo Abinye Morgan Ogolo, challenged the people of Bonny and Opobo Kingdoms to make concerted efforts to stop speaking Ibo language.

This will help to rediscover Ibani Language so that it will take its rightful place despite the damage it has suffered over the years.

The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro L G A, represented by the Council Secretary, Mr. Sunny J. Pepple, called on volunteer experts of the Ibani language to partner with the Council to revive the language.

The event featured dances, lectures and Ibani language competition among selected Secondary Schools with CSS Opobo emerging as winner while GGSS Finima and Bonny National Grammar School, emerged as runners up.

Dignitaries at the event include, Professor Emeritus E.J. Alagoa, Dr. Mrs Iyalla Amadi and the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communications, represented by Mr. Francis Alli among others.

I did not even know such event is taking place, now that it has been exposed here. I am more vexed about the whole thing.

Oh, why did you enbolden Alaoga's name while leaving other personalities.
Why not call out the chairman of Opobo and the Perm Sec. of Rivers State ministry of information and communication.

Go back to my earlier comments where I stated that Ijaws control the structures of both Bonny and Opobo politically and culturally.

I’m aware this event took place during the tenure of GEJ and not recent. Secondly, the Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro LGA and the Perm Sec for information and culture are no longer in seat. Moreover, they acted in their capacity as politicians. This is the angle the INC are harping on to gain a sort of emotional foothold on the riverine communities. Using such events to merge land grabbing tendencies. And we know that politics in Rivers state has been turned into a upland vs riverine affair all thanks to Ikwerre vs Kalabari political battles.

So I’m not surprised seeing the underground handwriting of INC sponsored cultural move in Bonny/Opobo.

The INC have cemented their status in the Niger-Delta after the emergence of GEJ and other monopolistic ownership of the Ministry of Niger-Delta, amnesty and the NDDC, as more financial inflow is pushed forward towards the Ijawnization efforts to corner communities in Warri/Bonny/Gelegele/Obolo etc.

If Ndigbo can get their politics right, then they will be an halt to that Ijaw shenanigans that INC keep exporting to Rivers state. First of them will be to fix her gaze in communities outside the SE. Get involved in the political battles in Nigeria and get her people to quit the emotional attachment to Biafra. Buhari has already done a good job by removing Ijaw hands from the cookie jar of oil derivative which is being planned to enforce the cash flow to Ijawnize and landgrab communities in the Niger Delta. Ohaneze-Ndigbo and the SE political leaders needs to sit down and start asking themselves open-ended questions and stop being lap dogs to Edwin Clark led INC, IPOB and PDP.

Just to puncture the lies of the landgrabbers with regards to the Bonny language that Dr. Baikie recorded.

Before I carry on, please bear in mind that Dr. Baikie had already made it clear that Bonny people claim Igbo descent.

Now, my first attachment shows a snippet in the book, where Baikie stated that the deposed King Peppel gave him a lot of information about BONNY. Not about Igbo. This is extremely important. What it means is that ex-king Pepple's piece in the Appendix of Dr. Baikie's book will be solely about BONNY/UBANI

Now the second attachment references the Appendix of interest, the first part deals with commonalities between Igbo, Nembe, Oru, Ibani and Kalabari.
The second part delves into the information that ex-king Pepple shared with Dr. Baikie about Bonny. In it, ex-king Pepple listed a few words and numbering in both Ibani and Igbo, which clearly means both languages are spoken in Bonny, after all ex-king Pepple was only sharing information about Bonny with Dr. Baikie, according to the first attachment.

Now, space did not permit me to also showcase the little commentary that Dr. Baikie made, wherein he stated that the Igbo numbering supplied by the ex king, had both Isuama and Aro pronunciations, which will suggest that other Igbo dialects had started affecting the original Ndoki dialect, as recorded by Captain Crow.

You think say na joke. I can't wait for the clashes between ijaws and ibos. The era of the Eastern region where you held absolute control and influence over the minorities is over. The minorities are today holding high their unique identities.

*If you are serious about it, call a press conference in Bonny/Opobo declaring them ibos.

* Go to Bonny/Opobo palace and present them the biafra flag and paraphernalia.

* Go to the schools, markets, towns and villages and sensitize them on their ibo origin.

* Issue an ultimatum to ijaws of Bonny/Opobo to relinquish their control of the structures they currently hold.

* Carry out No1,2,3,4 in no particular order and then we take you serious. No online chestbeating please!

I told you guys repeatedly that all you are doing here is just an academic exercise. Go to the field!

Please, don't be unfortunate talking about Biafra here, Frank Opiho would explain better.

Bonny and Opobo igbos only need to understand why and how they found themselves on those two islands and stop listening to Alagoa and his ethnic disciplines.

Also stop mentioning the term minorities and be specific about your ethnic identity unless you are trying to hide something we already know. Afterall, everyone is a minority somewhere for example igbos in Akwa-ibom.

Is biafra no longer an ideology?

After all, minorities should know their place. Minority ibos in Akwa ibom should know their place same as the minority Kalabari in Oguta. Much as we demand minority ibos in Bonny/Opobo know their place.

Bonny/Opobo people have been waiting for the hand of fellowship from the Igbo leadership but got none. Opobo people built a King Jaja school in Amaigbo with their own money. I remember when King Dandeson Jaja, and Asagba of Asaba kept attending the Ahajioku cultural festival held in Owerri. I guess Imo state was the only SE state that found it worthy to hold such event. But after the demise of Prof Achebe and coming of Rochas that event died a natural death. The onus is on the Igbo leadership to get their acts right and make the move, Bonny/Opobo people will surely get onboard.

Exactly. Igbos are emotional while Ijaws are practical. Ikwerre stubbornness in River state is the gulf that has kept the Igbos at bay. Truth be told, Igbos must get her politics right. Quit enthroning Ikwerre Governors in Rivers state. Ikwerre must be returned back to their pre-2007 political conundrum to get back their senses. Nnamdi Kanu once boasted that he made Wike Governor and I won't despute that because I noticed IPOB propaganda in 2015 against APC that made a lot of non-indigene Igbos vote for Wike against Dakuku Peterside of Opobo. Kalabari/Okrika had already thrown their weight behind Wike’s PDP, but for Ndigbo not supporting Peterside was a great injustice.

Now there is something we must recognize.

This fight is not to claim Bonny or Opobo as Igbo. Ndiigbo are too big a people to be recruiting people into our fold.

This battle is to establish the fact that Ndiigbo existed in Bonny as Aboriginals and not just as Slaves.

Key to Ijaw de-Igbonization of Bonny and Opobo is their deliberate demonization of the Igbo tag in Opobo and Bonny as that of Slave-descendants. The Cunning Ijaws understand psychology very well, humans naturally will not like to be attached to a dehumanizing history. No one would happily embrace a history that says that his ancestors were slaves.
So Ijaws at every given chance have promoted the falsehood that Igbo presence in Bonny and Opobo is a result of slavery.

The implication of this, is that the average Opobo or Bonny Igbo speaking person cannot embrace his Igbo identity without accepting the dehumanizing Slave descendants tag. For this reason, many of them remain neutral, and consciously stay away from Igbo tag, which gives the Ijaws enough cover to work slowly on their cultural genocide agenda.

To break this, we need to unequivocally with well researched proof show to the world, including OPOBO and Bonny people, that their Igbo speaking ancestors were not present in those Islands as just slaves, but that they were there as Aboriginals and as kings, long before the slaves from Igboland joined.
They have to know that they can embrace their Igbo language and culture without being decendants of slaves as not all of them were slaves.

Once we do this and repeatedly so, we would have effectively put to stop the Ijaws psychological blackmail on Bonny and Opobo people. Allowing them to voluntarily embrace their Igbo selves and come back to us on their own terms.

People take action only when they are informed, so you cannot in all honesty blame those igbo leaders or igbos. How many igbos/Nigerians know that indigenous Bonny/Opobo people speak igbo? Mind you there was no internet when some of those people held sway. So without relevant information, on what basis are you going to contest? I am sure most igbos from these places are even confused and are ignorant of these accounts we have rendered here. Imagine for a second that you have been taught history with that Alagoa's textbook your entire life.

So spreading information is key.
Like someone rightly said here Alagoa, would be swearing for whoever invented the internet by now.
Imagine the volume of information most of us could access from the comfort of our homes without traveling or going to any library.

Very good submission.

Alagoa sat down and blatantly corrupted Igbo history in Bonny and Opobo, reducing our Aboriginal presence on those Islands to Slave status.
We have how many Universities in SE, each with history departments and tens of professors of history.
And between 1970 till today, a whopping 50years, non of them have beamed a searchlight on Alagoa blatant manipulation of facts and provided a counter rebuttal.

We are really failing as a people. I swear. It's embarrassing.
