Acts 8:14-14

Notice the passage above. It said they went there and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit which is the baptism with the Holy Spirit. They did not go there to immerse them in water. They went there to get them baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Apostle Paul did the same things in Acts 19;

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Notice the question he asked them. He did not ask them if they have been baptized with water since they believed. He knew what they needed was the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

When they acknowledged their ignorance on the subject, he want ahead and laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

In is letter to the Ephesian church, he wrote;

He said that after they believed, they were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. They were not sealed with water baptism.

Let's analyze this issue of baptism from the genesis of it. It all started with John the cousin of Jesus hence he is called John the Baptist. Hear how he introduced the subject of water baptism. We will look at it from the four books of the gospel. Let's start with the gospel of Matthew.

He said in Matthew 3:11

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.

Pay attention to his language. First he said I indeed meaning he didn't institute it as something that must be done by everyone. Second, he said he is doing it with water. That means, It can be done with any other means. If he had said, he is baptizing OF water, we will infer that there is the baptism of water. But he said, he is baptizing WITH water.

He now went further to say that Jesus will do his baptism WITH the Holy Spirit.

So the keyword is baptism which must be carried out but the means with which it is done is different.

The water John the Baptist used was a symbol of the Holy Spirit which was yet to be given at that time. To baptize means to immerse or to be whelmed. So, he told his audience that in the same way I immerse you in water, Jesus will immerse you or whelm you with the Holy Spirit.

Baptism is not supposed to be duplicated like the church is doing it. The scripture says there is one baptism - Ephesians 4:5. They make the statement of John the Baptist to sound like there is baptism of water and there is baptism of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist didn't say baptism of water. He said, baptism with water. And there is a marked difference between both.

The evidence of the Gospel of Mark says the same thing. And it reads;

Mark 1:8 I indeed have baptized you WITH water: but he shall baptize you WITH the Holy Ghost.

The Gospel of Luke says the same thing;

Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you WITH water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you WITH the Holy Ghost and with fire:

The Gospel of John made unveils one of the reasons he baptized with water. He said;

John 1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

So, he carried out the water baptism so Jesus will be unveiled to Israel. It was not intended to be an everlasting sacrament. It was for a season.

He continued;

John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

There is no ambiguity in the statement made by John the Baptist. He said, I do my baptism with water but Jesus will do his with the Holy Spirit.

Even our Lord Jesus said the same thing;

Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

So, when Jesus said in Mark 16:16;

"He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."

He couldn't have been referring to water. If he meant water,then John the Baptist lied. Jesus has to fulfill prophecy. He is to do his baptism with the Holy Spirit. And that is what he uses to baptize us today.

Why then did the early church baptize with water? It was ignorance. They didn't have any book to make reference to like we do today.
It was many years later that Apostle realized that God didn't send him to baptize with water. He only baptized a few people. Apostle Paul came from a very religious background. If water baptism was very necessary,he would have insisted it must be done by all who profess Jesus Christ. And it would have form part of the content of the letters he wrote to the Churches. But, it was not mentioned once.
The Apostles did both baptism during the days of the early church but like I said, they were still learning. But many years later, Apostle Paul knew better.

I do hope my explanation makes more sense. If you want to go on with your water baptism, continue but don't condemn those who don't for they have been sanctified by the Holy Spirit - Romans 15:16.

The Holy Spirit is the stamp of ownership or approval of God on us. Hence, Paul wrote;

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Another passage reads;

2 Conrinthians 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
