Several people were killed on Sunday, as Nigerian soldiers were said to have opened fire on residents at Orlu Local Council of Imo State.

It was gathered that the soldiers stormed various communities in the local government in pick-up trucks shortly after nightfall and started shooting sporadically, as they searched for suspected Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) agitators causing mayhem in the state.

It wasn’t clear how many people were killed as of press time, but a source whose neighbour was shot dead by the soldiers said no fewer than four persons had been killed in what appears to be a gross violation of fundamental rights.

“Four people have been killed by the soldiers. They are looked for IPOB members but killing innocent citizens,” he said, pleading anonymity for fear of being attacked.

When contacted yesterday, Imo State police spokesman, Micheal Abattam, confirmed the incident but said he is not authorised to speak on what transpired. He said, “Since the police were not involved in the incident, I can’t speak. The military should speak on what happened there. I don’t work with them.”

Efforts to reach the military were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, did not respond to calls and text messages on the incidents and the number of casualties.

IN another development, troops of 34 Artillery Brigade, Nigerian Army (NA), on Easter Sunday, neutralised alleged members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) at Ihioma community in Orlu Local Council of Imo State.

According to army spokesman, Brig. General Onyema Nwachukwu, “Troops on routine patrol encountered members of the group who fired sporadically at Banana Junction to enforce the illegal sit-at-home order on law abiding citizens going about their legitimate businesses.

“The IPOB/ESN criminals, on sighting the troops, withdrew in a blue Toyota Highlander vehicle and headed towards Ihioma community for reinforcement.

“In the fire-fight that ensued during the operation, one of the criminals was taken out, while others fled in disarray. Troops are combing the area in a follow up operations to track down the fleeing dissidents.

MEANWHILE, a group, South East Initiative (SEI), yesterday, called on politicians and other gladiators to save the zone from further destruction by going about their 2023 aspirations in accordance with the rules.

The group lamented the growing insecurity that was daily creating fears in the people and raised concerns about attacks on politicians and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the region.

SEI noted that unless concerted efforts aimed at addressing current security challenges in the zone are made, a time would come when it would be difficult to do any business in the region.

Was getting petrol yesterday at De Jong fuel station along Akwakuma junction, I started hearing gunshots from Nigerian soldiers. They were shooting sporadically along that Rochas market. They were coming back from Orlu where they went and caused havoc.

Some market women got injured from the incident. I still don't understand why Nigerian soldiers will come to a market and start shooting.

Akuruoulo:
I LIVE AT EGBEADA ITSELF. IT WAS SAID THAT AFTER THEY BOUGHT THINGS FRM THE MARKET , THEN THEY STARTED THE SHOOTINGS. I GUESS THEY DIDN'T PAY AFTER THEIR PURCHASE
Of course you're right.

They bought things from the market. They started shooting after getting things from the market. One woman even claimed it was robbery.

On a day like that

This storm shall pass us!!

I watched the whole video of the incident......no gunmen was seen, but armies were seeing in large numbers.

I made a phone call to my friends sister living in orlu......she was sobbing and said "it's the Nigerian Army".

We are celebrating Easter.... Buhari didn't wish us "Happy Easter".. But his foot soldiers had the gut to visit us with death on a celebration Sunday, on pure easter Sunday they ought to respect for us

Can we invade any northern city on Ramadan??...... won't it be a pure disrespect to the northern brethren?.

Ohanézè should man up.

Watching my fellow brethren cry like this is the worst heartbreak to me.

Like from the video, the girl crying over the dead body was saying "mummy mụ ga anwụ"...... meaning "mum will die if she hear of this news".
To make the matter worst, other Nigerians will cheer the armies up in this occasion (they did yesterday).

I am heartbroken!!!!!!

Ya diba!!!! cry

At the horizon.......we gonna still count our Miles cry angry.

Outta here!!!!!!!!

there's always two sides to a story, the question is do or do not the army came into a town and barbarically opened fire on innocent civilians or they went for the ugm/esn terrorist

Just this statement by the Army spokesman shows that the Nigerian Army are liers

Everybody in the South East knows that nobody will enforce any sit home on a holy day such as Sunday, least of all Easter Sunday!

For the Nigerian Army to claim that IPOB was enforcing sit at home on Easter Sunday has exposed the Army as habitual liers

They just went about killing innocent people in Orlu on Easter Sunday and claimed they were pursuing IPOB

Our press and the abuse of the word "allegedly"!

They didn't allegedly open fire, they actually opened fire and there are videos everywhere to show this

The press needs to grow a pair of balls a d report the news as it is. Using the word allegedly to remove any association with the news or prevent sanctions is really silly!
