That's brings us back to what I said in the other political thread the other day.. Our main problem as a country starts from those very selfish delegates at every political party primaries. CSTRR: 1 Like |

BluntTheApostle: God bless you. A man who gets it completely. Your type are rare not only on Nairaland but in Nigeria generally. As an example, people talk simplistically about corruption. What does corruption have to do with moving ahead with the times to establish State or regional policing? We practice a system of Governance almost identical to that of the USA yet they have State policing and we do not. States of America have their own constitution and near complete autonomy but Nigerian States do not. Instead we have a system where power is inordinately concentrated in the federal government centre, and in the hands of one single individual who is president, meaning Nigeria's failure or progress may be down to the bias, whims, caprices and even private agenda of one man in a nation we cannot deny is horribly divided along ethnic, religious and sectional lines. Proof of Nigeria's failure or success lying vulnerably in the hands of one individual, especially if he is extremely biased, dictatorial, unsympathetic to the opinion and positions of others or possessing a sectional agenda, is shown below. Stunning how one man can just dismiss what every sensible and averagely well-educated Nigerian understands is inevitable and crucial asap. Ultimately we will keep wasting time looking for one single miracle worker instead of seeking someone willing and able to deliver holistic and long-ignored reforms that will begin to assist Nigeria move forward almost on autopilot. Nigeria, as currently constituted, will never work. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2021/06/those-calling-for-restructuring-naive-dangerous-says-buhari/amp/

CSTRR: If we elect a credible leader, the system will frustrate him. So, the system is the problem. Let us suppose Obi is a truly credible leader. He wants to cut cost of governance. How will he do it? The system runs a bicameral legislature. If Obi reduces cost of governance for the presidency, the system does not give him the power to review the bogus allowances that each lawmaker takes home every month. Bicameralism also slows down decision making. That is why a military dictator has a better chance of doing better than a civilian president in Nigeria. Supposing Obi wants to make a law that makes the police less corrupt and more efficient, he needs funds but he first has to write to the NASS. The NASS can use 8 years on the bill, and it would not get any headways. The anti-graft bill Buhari sent to NASS is still there after 7 years. In China, for example, or even Rwanda, if Kigali wants something, he gets it, and quick too. If Buhari wants something, he has to send it to the NASS, and even lobby them to get it passed quickly. Corruption is too simplistic an excuse. There is terrible corruption going on in Rwanda, but the country still manages to make headsway. 3 Likes |

tctrills:history and economics you say? China built more cities and relocated hundreds of millions of people to them, even though all of the cities werent success stories, but a huge chunk of people were lifted from poverty and live in those cities, working in industries, school, hospitals, transportation etc. they would have all still been subsistence farmers if not the communist party took that step. 2 Likes 1 Share |

confluence: The current 'forced' unitary system of government, in Nigeria, will continue to be a major drawback against any major development in the country. We have tried every form of government, in Nigeria and it was only Regionalism, started after 'self rule', in 1955 and after independence, in 1960, that worked. The experiment was truncated by Nzeogwu and his gangs under the pretext of corruption by the civilian government. The 'hijack' of power, led to the introduction of unitary form of government by General Ironsi, which from all indications, is the bane of our current underdevelopment because the regions were well managed and making progress with the practice of Regionalism, during self rule and after independence. We have also had different military dictatorships and a diarchy system of government, under IBB, which also failed. We experimented Presidential system of government in the 2nd Republic before it was truncated by General Muhammadu Buhari, in a military coup. It will be naive to assume that our political actors will make any effort to correct the 'malaise' of unitary form of government because they are major beneficiaries of the system. There is really no hope in sight, for any meaningful development in the country, with the current 'forced' unitary form of government we are practising. The Nation will likely be in a 'fumbling and wobbling' mode until it finally disintegrates, at a time, in the future. Boko-Haram, Banditry, Biafra agitation, kidnapping and general unrest in the country, have given pointers to that fact. 2 Likes |

ysth: You are the impolite boy but let me answer you this one. China did not lift millions out of poverty by building new cities and moving the poor into them. China lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty through private investments creating millions of jobs in the cities. In case you don't know, the thousands of skyscrapers you see in China are privately owned. The government does not create wealth. China did not go into foreign debt to Build infrastructure. Every single country that has gone into massive debt to build infrastructure ended up in a bad place. Learn about the IMF loans of the 80s. Even with the recent Chinese loan that most nations are taking, By next year, Nigeria would find it unsustainable to pay her debt and manage its economy. Egypt you point is entering into one of the worst food crises ever. They would need the world bank and richer nations to survive. Their economy was not prepared for the Ukraine war. The secret to economic growth is not big government projects but allowing the private sector to take off. Ask Korea and Japan. Ask the USA. Just so you know, the first railway in the US was built by a private company. In fact, most of the rail in the US was built by private entities. China was as poor as Nigeria until it handed over its economy to private hands. Dubai did the same, and Singapore did the same. Rusia a country with vast minerals, Agricultural land, and tech remains one of the poorest in Europe because its government does not give businesses a free hand. While Estonia a little unknown nation has 10x its economy in the last 20 years not by building projects but by creating a more liberal economy where the government does less. Finally, learn to disagree with other schools of thought without getting angry. As a man, the ability to control your temper, tame your response, and school your feelings makes you strong. 2 Likes |

Thanksful: Almost anything can be achieved with uniformity of purpose, selfless patriotism and sincerity. Things you're unlikely to get from a nation of over 250 ethnic groups very divided along ethnic, religious and sectional lines. Most of us don't see ourselves as Nigerians anymore. We all side with ethnic, religious and sectional affiliates than bond as fellow Nigerians. We all interact as a bunch of people forced to live together and have derogatory tags and slurs for each other. This is why regionalism is vital and should not be put off for longer. Giving Nigerians the freedom to build from their regional bases will bring geographical pride, patriotism, a sense of identity and belonging plus commitment back into the hearts all Nigerians. It will make everyone re-dedicate efforts towards making their region great whereas that passion to make Nigeria great died in most Nigerians a long time ago. Every Nigerian now looks at Nigeria as a defenseless orphan they must exploit rather than assist. Transformative leadership positions , under such an arrangement, will always be commandeered for "na our turn" agenda. This is Why Buhari quickly moved in Daura, Abba Kyari and others into his inner circle as decision-makers for all of Nigerians to then ostracize non-Fulanis who had worked for his Victory who should have had a say in a sincere government of unity and balance. Because of the very same system, Buhari can do as he pleases without Nigerians been able to unite and fight him to deliver what is right by all. His fellow Northerners would claim victimization of their 'son' while Igbos will remain playing spiteful blame game of "na Yoruba install am so na Yoruba headache. Yorubas will lampoon Igbos as frustrated because" dem no sabi politics". In the middle of those fights, misrule and misery continues for Nigerians. The whole thing is a mess. Why not go back to regional governance where a Yoruba premier must answer first to his people and region with nowhere to hide and no others to hide behind? Ditto for all other regions. We are only postponing the evil days enduring with Nigeria as currently constituted. As a simple example, would many of us not consider joining the police force if totally independent State or regional policing was in place? I would certainly consider it out of genuine patriotism I have for my State and region. Yet how many would join the Nigerian police force controlled by the Federal Government? "I dey mad?" would be the response of most Nigerians. Nigerians cannot be united productively under a unitary system anymore. It has never worked and never will whereas regionalism worked. It is not Rocket Science. 1 Like 1 Share |
