IjeBos:

Read Canterbury Tales back in highschool, forgot that reference or didn't fully understand it when I did. It's basically saying keep your distance from certain people. But without understanding the culture of the time, the expression is meaningless. Why would one need a long spoon to keep distance if you're not eating off the same plate as someone? A long table like Putin has would make more sense. No?

Long spoon in the context used gives one idea of space - space between something.
Anyway happy New year.

Thank you cheesy

It's a common idiomatic expression @ IjeBos- now you know wink
Go tell it on the mountain that anyone who wants to dine with the devil should use a long spoon wink

Honestly, not a fan of the word "common" when it comes to idiomatic expressions. It assumes there is a language culture/that is dominant. What is common in Nigeria, is not common in the middle east, is not common in the US. Are you saying it is a common Nigerian idiomatic expression or a worldwide one?

English speakers generally - Anyone who loves reading and went to school here or anywhere English is used etc will come across idioms. There are many idioms in books. American use idiomatic expression.
Do you like reading ?

Yes, a lot of people use idioms. But idioms are generally reflective of ones culture. I explained how in the US a lot of standardized tests are biased against minorities/immigrants because of the same assumptions you are making. Words even have connotations.

Since I found the "Do you like Reading" somewhat insulting. I studied Latin for 7 years (and a couple of other languages). Since Latin is a foundation for Romance Languages and English has a lot of Latin borrowed words, I can understand what the person intended to convey themselves instead of reading someone's translation (word choices/connotations/understanding). And with Greek, helps in better understanding what you read. FYI, I've probably read every classic there is, and some of them in Latin.

Just saying, your view of language, words, culture and how they are intertwined is somewhat simplistic. And lastly are you arguing that idioms are only in English?

Here is one definition of idiom:
a form of expression natural to a language, person, or group of people.

Note the "if you want to" in your post. You don't need any spoon if you aren't supping with anyone or thing or at all

It's worldwide in the English speaking world, considering where Chaucer stands at the foundation of English. Comparable to Shakespeare and King James Version, I'd say.

It's a pity Seun and the moderators have allowed this section to become a cesspool. It's diminishes the commercial value of the whole site. It's being taken over by uncultured and mannerless youths spewing vile insults every post.

Hehehe. Go through the history and check who starts the insults. It’s always your team bro. People like myself, basilico, benalvino3 always just come here to politely give our own opinions and counter arguments to all the liberal propaganda here and then uncivilized scoundrels like IjeBos (AkA IjeBranson), Obrigardo and 1stGenAmerican get triggered by common opinions and start raining all kinds of insults on us. When we fight back they open their wide mouth and start crying for ban.

You want free hand to insult people who don’t share your opinion without any resistance abi? Lol. That’s not how it works bro. Where were you when like 7 of them ganged up against just me with all kinds of insults about my education and exposure? That fight went on for about 5 pages and I still put all of them in their place. Lol.

Just let us state our options jejely without attacking us. If you want to retort then do it civilly without insult. See if this place won’t be a better place. But coward liberals always want to punch first then cry like sisi’s when they get smacked back. Typical victimhood mentality that’s common among liberals everywhere. Pathetic.

They are the same everywhere. They want freedom to say all kinds of vile things against conservatives then try to censor you when you fight back. Only their opinions must be heard according to them. That tyrannical trait is genetically inbuilt in all people with liberal ideologies. I’ve noticed this for a while.

Donjazet2 oya come and see a typical example. Check out basilico’s initial comment then compare it to the response of this animal. Who insulted who? Can you see what I’m saying? And I didn’t have to scroll too far to find it. Will you call this one out too? I trust you won’t because you’re a typical liberal hypocrite.

The GOP has another black figurehead, a first term Rep who they allowed to speak. So, in 2 days we've seen or heard from about HALF of all the black members in the GOP. Interesting right.

Interesting tidbits
1.) Gloated about doubling the amount of black people in the GOP caucus. There are 5 now. Lol.
2.) Gloated about a win. They won an adjournment last night. Literally, gloated about going home instead of finishing the work they were sent there for.
3.) Spoke about the opioid pandemic. This generally bothers me. Why are Republicans not treating the Opioid epidemic as a Law and Order issue rather than a health care issue like they did with Crack? Oh yeah, because it's white people dying and largely effects white people.

I generally distrust any black Republican.

But did half the entire GOP attend the funeral of a former high ranking KKK member and shower him with praises and sweet eulogies? Oh no that was the Democrats you worship. I don’t expect any sense from a virgin boy though. You never mature.

No headway because of the "Trump factor". McCarty would have been the favorite of the Democrats, within the Republican aspirants because he isn't "far-right" (same reason the 20 or whatsoever don't want him) however, his link with Trump is the clog.

A staffer for Herschel Walker’s Senate campaign has alleged that longtime Republican activist Matt Schlapp made “sustained and unwanted and unsolicited” sexual contact with him while the staffer was driving Schlapp back from an Atlanta bar this October.

The staffer said the incident occurred the night of Oct. 19, when Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union and lead organizer for the influential Conservative Political Action Conference, “groped” and “fondled” his crotch in his car against his will after buying him drinks at two different bars.
