The project definitely started with world bank funding.

No be today oga at the top dey say one story while the guys in the trenches know the story is different.

You are showing me proof of the expressway. I have not argued that with you

But the Blue Rail line was paid for by Lagos state. WB did not partake in the $2 billion bonanza for a 27km rail.

The head of the transport agency just told you.
There is no proof from you that WB paid anything for the rail

Yet, you want me to believe a trenches gossip.

I refuse, sir grin

grin I can admit when I'm wrong but you were motivated to prove a 'gotcha moment' when you responded to my post.

Thank God Gloriousgbola has dropped his expert opinion so the matter is put to rest.

I'm definitely not the most intelligent on this thread so I have no qualms submitting to superior arguments.

You're one of the most intelligent posters I've come across who's submissions I often agree with.

The times I tackle you is obviously when we disagree so no beef on my end.

izzou:

You said something
I probed it

Now you are going about, dropping specific terrains...Not good, sir

You said roads are cheaper to build in the North than South. What you should look out for it the cost of a road in the North, in relation to that of a South.

I no wan win argument with you. You no even dey gree if you dey wrong, so there is no point of arguing

On debts what we should be asking is what percentage are they used for; what percentage is owed by states and FG?, how can we repay them or should we have taken them in the first place?,
It is easy to say that FG shouldn't borrow to finance capital projects or salaries, but when you're faced with social upheaval and your revenue drops in the meantime you will know that theory is different from practice.
On QE I believe we shouldn't adopt the policy wholeheartedly without looking at the angle that we don't have enough in our control to regulate the market, this will lead to many capital chasing few commodities and in the long run leading to economic decline.
The best way to move forward is a lean and efficient government but in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like ours any such attempt to create such government will be looked at with
suspicion and you will be hearing cries of marginalisation from different quarters, this is easier to achieve at the Sub-National level where the stakes are not much higher and homogeneity is largely present.
In 2021 PMB granted Financial Autonomy to the State Assembly and Judiciary and Local Government but the Governors fought against it in unison, and the public went quiet without realising that without financial autonomy to these tiers of government they're more or less like employees hired in the service of the Governors who can punish them by withholding their salaries when they don't do their bidding.

This is because there is no trust by the masses for the FG so every policy by default is looked at suspiciously.

Secondly the Buhari himself is the worst communicator Nigeria has ever had. Imagine you had a president who addressed the masses from time and time and took time to breakdown the implications and benefits of a policy to the society, people would be swayed.

But the 8 years of buhari's administration, the country has seemed to be on autopilot where various head of government parastatals seem to be acting on their own behest without a joint leadership or direction and worse still no accountability. When things go wrong, no one is sacked or made accountable so where does the trust come in?

the nigerian problem is and will always be corruption imho

corruption exists everywhere - but in most other places - it ends at 10% or it ends at kickback

but too many nigerians are prepared for a level of corruption that will compromise the project, national security , food security , basic safety.

this replocates in all sectors and so here we are.

the whole kidnapping business is also chop money for soldiers. if soldiers are getting thier cut from kidnappers, why would they be motivated to flush them out?
there are stories of nigerian lawyers compromising international cases that would cost this country billions of dollars

right now everyone simply adds settlement to cost of doing business

Corruption is key part of human behavior because it's part of the "survival of the fittest" behavior and a desire to cut corners. But the antidote to corruption anywhere in the world are strong institutions. Who creates or modifies the institutions? Politicians! Who selects or elects the politicians? The masses. Are you seeing where I'm going with this?

To buy at 179 naira in PH, you have to go and park tonight around 8pm and sleep at the filling station till tomorrow.

They can come tomorrow and say they don't have fuel cheesy but if you're lucky that they have, you should get fuel around 3pm tomorrow.

I believe in Africans looking within and finding their own system of government that suits them. Democracy leaves room for so many excesses while some of our traditional system of government in the past also had checks and balances in place . We should look at working something out for ourselves .

Oh blueray, this is quite a poor take, first of all, Europeans themselves who practice democracy today (parliamentary) were all once a monarchy too that also believed in leadership for life or being appointed by "God" hence the immense power of the church in the previous 1000 years in Europe.

Just like africa, Europe had a mix of theocratic and monarchial rule so nothing really unique about African beliefs just a reorientation is what we need.

Secondly, it's always said that the worst form of democracy is better than the best form of autocracy. One is the fact that in a democracy you are assured of a change of leadership eventually no matter how bad the leader is, you already know his time will end. Not the same in autocracy, monarchy or theocracy.

Look at america, many were complaining about how terrible he was and the more educated populace voted him out and brought I someone more level headed and experienced.

Fuel at the end of Jonathan's era was #87, when he initially removed subsidy, fuel was at #67, and it was supposed to go as high as #97 an increase of like 45%. Today we're buying fuel as high as 250% from the approved price.

Anybody knows what cost of fuel is supposed to be without subsidy?

Anything u veto can still be subject of judicial process . The executive will be at loggerhead with the legislature in a lawsuit which the judiciary will determine how the case will

That’s just a recipe for disaster

I don't know why people keep glossing over this fact, should Obi win, should labor party accumulate millions of votes, that will definitely translate to legislative seats.
It's almost like I need to keep drumming into you guys ears that labor party right now has a Senate seat in imo state and has 8 house of reps already. This is even before a ballot has been cast.

Should Obi win, he's expected to have a strong enough caucus in both houses that enables him push foe legislative agendas.
I don't think you guys have really thought through the implications of a labor party win.

For God's sake, such a victory totally, like hugely changes the entire political landscape. All politicians will know that it is no longer business as usual. A labor party win will be a successful coup of government by the masses.

An Obi presidency will be one where the president knowa that the nigerian masses made him the president, and not powerful forces behind the scene pulling strings that expect favors that negatively affects the masses.

An Obi presidency is a win for all Nigerians.

So this talk of legislative strong-arming is expected to be a relic of the past that is if the legislative are concurrently acting against the interest of the masses.

It depends on the price of oil

The real issue is this
Price of oil drops, landing cost of petrol drops but the country is fked.

This happened in 2016 after the election. The Saudis were trying to kill fracking and they flooded the market. This knocked the price of oil down. This is when the fg removed the subsidy. When the price rose nnpc then began underrecovery - a fancy term for the subsidy operated and administered solely by nnpc.

So the price of petrol really depends on global price of oil, and some other factors.

I thoroughly distaste the constant need to engage in a doom-fest. Ohh, Nigeria is dead and buried no matter what happens.

For fvcks sake, that's a terrible bloody lie, it's a lie you tell yourself as a cheap excuse not to do something about it. To make an attempt to change things

In that lie, you want to tell yourself that labor party winning will have the same effect as APC or PDP winning.
Like you really believe, that labor party winning the presidency next month will not be a statement alone that ignites massive changes across the entire leadership structure.

As it stands today, Obi doesn't have a governor giving him corrupt state funds and expecting favors in return, God knows I would certainly prefer a president without strings attached to him by unknown forces selecting the cabinet than either an atiku or a tinubu cabinet.

Be careful of what u wish for . If they remove subsidy and petrol sells close to 800 like dem diesel and kerosene , just know that there will be chaos.

I don’t know if it’s just me o, but I’ve noticed that most people who are very very poor are just tolerating we the working class/those who can afford to eat well and have access to some of the basic amenities . Like where I stay we have some areas that are residential ; more like estates where there are gates everywhere , there is security and all. Then there are areas close by where people rent face-me-I-face-you apartments , they still go to fetch water with buckets on their head , etc .

People like that are only tolerating us . People like that won’t hesistate to jump ur fence and take whatever they need from u if worse come to worse . We saw how the aftermath of ENDSARS was . People who thought they were comfortable practically turned to vigilante to protect their loved ones . Imagine the poorest of poor not being able to feed again . U don’t want to imagine what will happen o

Thanks man. I appreciate this.
1. Security - Reforming the police is one humongous task and if he can pull it off...
2. Economy - what exactly are we going to produce? Surely we can't compete in the technology area.
Agriculture you say? That would be interesting. A lot of investment is obviously needed in that area. Where do we source the investment from?
3. On governance - Cutting spending? Is he going to close some parastatals or reduce salary for government workers, officials including the presidency?
4. On power - For me oh, this is the number 1 problem after security. Fix this and we will all be smiling to the bank. haha.
5. Corruption - He is going to cut spending and then stop corruption? Again, if he can pull this off....
I think we must begin to hold our elected officers accountable for their words. Whoever wins, Nigerians must start putting pressure on him to fulfil their so called campaign promises.

The last thing you want as a President is an antagonistic NASS.
NASS does not have veto powers. Only the Executive has.

But that doesn't mean it's easy. The process is long and can lead to impeachment if it fails.

I agree as I have stated above. But it still remains an option.

It is as declaring a state of emergency. At that point NASS or even Judiciary steers clear.
