Unreliable internet has always been an issue for me in Lagos. The best Internet Service Providers use Fibre Optics but have very limited coverage areas. So when I heard Starlink would be rolling out their Low Orbit internet service in Africa, It Immediately piqued my Interest.

I made a preorder for the service in May of 2021 with a refundable deposit of $99. I did this due to the projected rollout of the service by the end of 2021. I did not get any update from Starlink until early december of 2022. I was told to pay up a balance of $501 so my exquipment would be shipped.

8 days after making full payment, my Starlink Equipment was delivered to me by DHL. It is a plug and play device that is easy to install by following very simple steps on the manual. I mounted the dish on my compound, at a postion with good sky visibility and the device connected to an available Satellite within a few minutes.

My Internet experience is now the best I have ever had it, here in Nigeria.

Monthly Subscription for Unlimited Internet $43

Don't want to go into the details of all of that but one month, be intentional and try and make over 30 hours of "unlimited calls" and send SMS instead of whatsapp messages. Oh yes I agree. I would love to lay my hands on one if I could. However, from an economic perspective its a No no. If Elon Musk is allowed to disrupt the Telco space, at least 40% of the revenue generated by all the Telcos would disappear. Thats means layoffs, reducing in taxes been paied to government and the effect would cascade to all areas of the economy. All he would be selling are modems, he doesnt need any form of infrastructure on ground, he doesnt need staff, wont pay much as taxes and wont be needing to hire anyone either. Elon Musk is a very dangerous man if allowed would kill local competition if given a chance, he is ruthless. If he is serious let him come on ground and start to invest in some form of infrastructure, let him buy a 5G spectrum to start with and come to Nigeria, he has money anyway.

Let me tell you what Amazon did when started to grow their market share and wanted to maintain the lead. They used price reduction to kill competition, people thought it was a great idea, they loved it, but guess what happened after most of the competition was dead. Amazon started to show its true colors, it increased fees, turned itself into a monopoly and today Mr Jeff is one of the richest people alive. Elon wont be any different. While I agree that the Telcos are indeed ripping Nigerians of their money, our fight should be with the consumer protection agency who are compromised and not the players. Every business owner if allowed will kill competition using price and then raise prices afterwards when a monopoly is established and Elon wont be any different if allowed, cause he has the mean. Nigerians most learn to demand for quality services and from the appropriate authorities.

Assuming an average speed of ~150mbps (18MBPS) for which FiberOne and iPNX charge for ~₦62,000


However, the installation costs are steep: $600 (₦267,000 at bank rate; ₦450,000 at black market rate) vs ~₦50,000 for FOB or iPNX.

Reliability is a concern here though - would it work well in bad weather? Rains would start next year so I'll be waiting for your feedback by then.
